"If horses are beyond the means of our pool of coin, then it would seem our only option is to move on foot." He turns to Vimak. "As we are the same kin, can I presume you have some skill in tracking? Can you assist me if I try and follow our quarry from the city?"
(ooc: if Vimak helps, can I get adv on Survival to track the cart)
If there is a guard then I assume either A) he has seen the cart, or B) there was a shift change after the cart passed through the gate so the current guard knows nothing. If the guard did see the cart, I ask them to go into great detail about what the people in it looked like. Afterwards, I ask where I could find the fastest horses in the city, (I assume he is pointed to the stables) he then sprints in that direction, his hair sticking straight out behind him, Air Genasi hair flows naturally, as though it is being blown by an unfelt wind, but now Cirrus is sprinting as fast as he can, blowing his hair in an actual wind. When he gets to the stables, he rushes to whoever is in charge. "Excuse me, I need several fast horses. What is the minimum number of horses that could efficiently fit two Goliaths, a slim man such as myself and a..." He pauses, not knowing what Herman's race is. "...Medium sized humanoid?" (I will make an insight check just in case he tells me a bigger number to sell more horses: 22)"Also, what is the going rate for that number of horses? Is it a one time payment? does it increase with the time the horses are out? Time is of the essence."
If the price of the horses is definitely more than we can pay, I would like to do the following:
I will make a persuasion check to lower the price: 20
If that is still not enough then:
Cirrus takes out his pan pipes and plays the tune that Mr. Krabs plays on the smallest violin, casting Charm Person on the stable owner, saying "Please, have pity on me, a cart that I was payed to watch was stolen from me in the dead of night, if you let me take these horses out now, I promise I will pay you the full amount when I return. I really, sincerely promise to make that payment when I return, I implore you to remember that in an hour when you realize that this is an enchantment."

"Gulari, I am glad to help you examine the tracks," Vimak says. "We need every advantage to survive," he says.
It seems slightly odd that the guard is so helpful. Many of them seem to dislike adventurers, having taken an arrow to the knee, but Vimak thinks maybe this one is trustworthy. Everyone seems to have heard about Gundren's offer. If they can confirm that the cart went south, and if horses are--as seems likely--more than they can afford, they should march fast and hope they can catch the thieves in the next eight hours. Marching that fast for longer can be exhausting, but might be worth it. Perhaps they will have caught the thieves by then.
Vimak eyes the sharp edge of his ax before turning to the mud with Gulari.

Cirrus manages to get to the far south gate, as the rest of the group discusses the best possible course of action. As he approaches the guard.. somehow winded, despite his heritage, the guards shouts Oi there.. whats the problem? ......A cart? Well, I wasn't 'ere .. a change of the guard rotates every four hours. However, the guard on duty should still be in the barracks.. give me a moment.... HEY, Rogers, I need you to hold the place down for just a minute. This guard was oddly willing to help, though it was unclear as to why...
A few minutes later, the previous guard returns, nodding in the affirmative Aye. Indeed. A single cart was headed out of the gates around three hours ago, just afore I got on duty. Devin says they looked like typical Laborers or merchants what would have that sort o' thing, so he didn't suspect them. He told 'em he and his buddy 'ad taken on the job what Gundren was offerin so he let em pass. Was it your cart? or was he tellin the kings truth?
((OOC - Two of the chunks I posted were directed at your character answering most of the questions within your post. I'll try to work around this though.))
(yes, advantage on tracking with help)
Gulari and Vimak begin setting their eyes to the ground, each making note of the particular tracks left by the cart, incase another cart happens by sometime soon. Luckily, for now, the cart they were after was the only tracks visible, and they were, in fact, heading out the southgate towards both Phandalin, as well as the other town, directly south from Neverwinter.
The guard answers Cirrus' new questions quite readily Like I said, they looked like Typical Laborers, or perhaps even Unlucky Merhcants. Commoners clothes, of tan and black. Simple shoes, one with black hair, the other a brunette, or so Devin says. Nothn' overly special about them, but that's about all we know. Cart looked full of supplies.
After hearing this, Cirrus sprints towards a nearby stable, just as Vimak, and Gulari approach from nearby, hearing most of what was said by the guard. Likely waiting to see how Cirrus fares....
Cirrus begins his pleadings, begging the stablemaster to take pity on them. I can give ya a horse for twenty-five gold... But I can only spare two for such a cheap price. I'm running a business here, and horses take time to raise. I can't give you almost my entire stock for a paupers wage, else I'll be a pauper myself. And really you only have yourself to blame for losing your charge. That's the most I can do.. (I checked, and the sum total between you all is 64 gold pieces) So, Take it or leave it...
(I will wait on finding out if the deal is taken, or not before I assume that you charm him.)
(Can I assume Heman also hears the guard since he was not very far behind Vimak and Gulari?)
Herman sees Cirrius bolt again somewhere. He shakes his head and says, "Now where the hell is he going?" Herman overhearing the guard mutters to him self, "That's GREAT news (/sarcasm). That narrows our potential culprits down to every ******* brown and black haired duo on the ******* planet."
Herman lets the two goliaths do their tracking. He doesn't want to get in their way. Especially since payday hinges on it.
(OOC: I have no idea how I missed post #41, sorry about that. Also, I'm a little confused, but jousting by the way your post was written, I'm gonna guess that these fast horses can carry two people.)
With the guard, Cirrus confirms his suspicions, "Yes, they were lying. I was one of the men hired by Mr. Rockseeker, if he were here now he would vouch for me."
When hearing the price for the horses, Cirrus gives the stable master a "I'll be right back, hold those horses!" before running out the door. Just outside of the stables, he shouts to his companions: "HEY! THE GUARD SAID THEY'RE THREE HOURS AHEAD OF US! I THINK WE CAN CATCH THEM WITH A COUPLE OF HORSES, BUT IT'S GONNA COST FIFTY GOLD! WOULD YOU GUYS BE WILLING TO PITCH IN? I KNOW IT'S A LOT BUT THINK OF IT THIS WAY: WE'LL MAKE THAT BACK ONCE THE JOB IS DONE! WHADDYA SAY? WILL YOU PITCH IN OR WILL I HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ELSE?"

((Yes, it is clear that they headed out the south gate, and that, they are VERY likely going towards Phandalin, or Leilin, further south. Have some more errands to run (though they're all light, unlike yesterday. Will check again in about an hour and a half. and yes if you both with to assist eachother in tracking I will allow it. about the only thing I can't see having advantage on is a perception check.))
"Three hours, is that all?!" Gilari asks incredulously. "This cart, is heavily laden with supplies and has set off before first light." His face scowls heavily. "Their pace will be barely above a slow walk, if we push hard we should easily catch before noon, they will not have gotten far."
He touches his coin purse on his belt, "And I would rather keep my hard earned coin."
(ooc: just saw your last post hence Tracking roll)
Since Herman was already offering to put forth 5 gold, I assume he would give Cirrus that 5 gold. Cirrus receives the 11 gold from Vimak, and returns to the stable master, immediately casting charm person. "Okay, in an hour when this spell wears off, you're going to think I robbed you, but what I'm going to do is give you 24 gold for two horses, then I will pay you 26 gold when I get paid in... at least four days. On top of that, those horses that were pulling Mr. Rockseeker's cart? The cart that was stolen from us? I bet those were your horses. If those thieves have their way and get away with your horses, then those horses won't be making you any money ever again! To put the situation simply: I will give you twenty-four gold for two horses, then, when I come back, I will give you twenty-six gold and a total of four horses! So at the bottom line, you will have gained the gold you would have earned without this charm spell, and two horses that would have been lost to you forever will be back in your stables. Sound good? Good. Now, where can I find these fast horses that I have partially paid for?"

The stablemaster's eyebrows furrow the entire time Cirrus is speaking. More and more incredulity radiating from his demeanor, and as Cirrus finishes, the man fully scoffs HA!....HA! As If I would ever give away not one, but TWO horses for not even the full price of a single one. And unlike you, Gundren actually bought his own horses, WITH TIP! yet you're expecting me to just hand my horses to you, and trust you not to just never show your face here again? Get out! And if you ever try to enchant me again, I'll have the guards flog you for a week. I can't believe that womans son would turn out to be such a charlatan, trying to rob honest men of their honest labor... She would be ashamed. Now get out, before I flog you myself! the stablemaster shouted, apparently knowledgeable of who Cirrus was.
It looks like you all will have to run this gauntlet to catch the cart, since negotiations and charms have failed. With that tracking roll, it will be very easy to keep track of where the cart is going, and the longer you linger the farther ahead it gets. Phandalin is a day and a half ride from the south gate, they have now a four hour lead on you, more or less. Another 20 hours and they'll be over halfway there.
Unless you wish to try something else....
I need to know who is where in the 'marching order' who's in the front, who is in the back, is anyone walking side by side? etc. and if so, the chase for your job, begins.
((And had the charm or pursuasion worked, i would have allowed two persons to a horse.))
When Cirrius gets back Herman will want his 5 gold back. "Come on, you can't win 'em all." Herman turns to the others and says, "Well, we've wasted enough time here. Let's cut our losses and march fast before they get further than they already have." When the party will decide to move, Herman will stay near the 2nd or 3rd position (depending on if anyone wants to walk side by side).
"As I said, they don't have that much lead, and horses pulling a cart that heavy aren't going to be traveling much faster than us. I'll take the lead, and Vimak watches for any signs I miss just in case, there should be no problem coming up with them." Gulari stows both his weapons across his back, adjusting them to be as comfortable as they can. "Now, let's hustle."
Cirrus’ mother is a sensitive subject for him, and hearing the stablemaster speak I’ll of her fills him with anger that immediately makes him want to attack him, but he knows that that will just further illustrate the stablemaster’s point. This frustration that he feels instead manifests as tears that begin to sting his eyes as he heads out of the establishment.
Cirrus is currently the farthest from the gate so he will probably be last in the marching order.
He makes sure to return the 11 gp that Vimak lent him.

Vimak thanks Cirrus for the gold. "Mothers are complicated," he says before joining the others in a fast march out of town. He walks either last or just before Cirrus.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Why can't things just be easy?
As the group begins their travel at a brisk march, with the two Goliaths leading the charge, tracking the cart, which is, mor or less, following the road perfectly, other than when obvious, to avoid hitting a particularly large rock. The cart seemed to be going at a fairly brisk, if laden pace, as if the people feared potential pursuit. They were going at a pace only slightly slower than the brisk jog you all were taking, meaning inevitably, you would catch up with them before they reached their destination
And my gosh I had to do some complicated math to figure out how far per mile moving at X speed vs the carts speed...... spent the last half hour figuring it out.. lol....
The trip along the road, is mostly uneventful, everyone keeping a brisk pace..... (Athletic rolls) Cirrus 4 Gilari 12 Herman 9 Vimak 12
Four hours pass at this pace, and everyone seems to be doing fine with keeping their wind, with Herman slowly falling behind, but able to keep his breath.
(Athletic rolls) Cirrus 13 Gilari 18 Herman 24 Vimak 22
Another four hours pass, and Herman is starting to become sluggish, falling behind the group, with Cirrus beginning to feel the weight as well, being where Herman was just four hours ago. Sweat beating down the brows of both Cirrus and Herman, though Herman, profusely. You're all much closer than you were before, but are still nearly two hours and change behind the cart itself, as the tracks are progressively becoming fresher, however, of this continues, with Herman being so winded, he may begin to suffer exhaustion, everyone, however should be impressed that Cirrus 9with his -1 athletics) kept pace as well as he did for as long as he did.
During this running march, you can all get a spectacular view of the sea, known as the Sea of Swords, along the Sword coast. The sun is bright and high, reflecting off the water. To your left, is a great plain and grassland, verdant green plants resist winters touch, as do some small patches of snow, lucky enough to be caught in the shade, resist the suns heat. Beyond that, is the great Neverwinter Woods, a massive forest barely visible in the distance.
Do you all continue apace? Rest for an hour to allow Herman to recover? Something else? And apologies for rolling for you all, i felt it would streamline this, and make it feel more active, as opposed to 'X person roll this' wait for rolls, rinse repeat.
"If horses are beyond the means of our pool of coin, then it would seem our only option is to move on foot." He turns to Vimak. "As we are the same kin, can I presume you have some skill in tracking? Can you assist me if I try and follow our quarry from the city?"
