As Gilari looks down, the wind and snow shifting around a bit, he digs beneath the surface with his large hands, eventually revealing the curvature of the tracks beginning to head towards where the sign saying 'Phandalin' was pointing. And though the road itself was still not visible, in any true fashion, likely, if the group just continued heading straight in that direction..... They would catch up with the cart finally. Even better news, is the cart seemed to be less than a half-hour away, perhaps, if Gilari's guess was to be trusted. The group (I assume) Presses on, with their quarry so close, and into the snow strewn path they go. Breath ragged from running for all but an entire day.
Another hour passes and finally... you all can see a cart, unmoving ahead. The wind picks up almost ominously, slowshing flakes of snow into your field of vision.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Herman was busy being a very sarcastic Watson to Cirrus' Sherlock while the bard examined the signs. Then Gilari said he found tracks leading to Phandalin. He moves with the group forward until he notices the cart. He slows his pace down and fixes his gaze on the cart. He feels that something isn't right. There is no reason a cart should be just parked out in the middle of the road unless... It could be a trap, it could be abandoned or it could have been raided or damaged. Since one of these options is more concerning than the others, he acts on his paranoia and tap the shoulders of those in front of him with his right hand, while signaling those behind him to stop with his left. He calls the party closer and through his mask, he whispers,
Something's up. It could be a trap. Proceed with caution.
Herman then tries to move toward the cart stealthily with his bow at the ready. If this isn't a trap, no harm done in being cautious. If this is a trap, he'll be ready for it. Stealth: 15 Ready Action: If any hostile creatures come into view (by hostile I mean anything clearly wanting to attack them), he will launch an arrow at it.
He keeps his body low and moves stealthily toward the cart like a ghost. He tries his best to keep out of the open and out of plain view of any possible ambushers.
You can't drown someone with Create Water. If your lungs are containers than your bones are objects. Any Siege monster that attacks you deals double damage because it’s attacking your bones.
Vimak silently takes his shield from his back. From the back of the shield he takes one of his hand axs, gripping it well, and tries to gage the distance from the wagon to the trees. His big ax is still on his back, but he is ready to act by throwing the smaller ax at anyone obviously hostile to him or his colleagues.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Gilari halts at the Herman's motions and then spies the cart ahead, left seemingly unwanted in their path ahead. "Something is not what it appears here" He turns to speak softly to the ranger, but he is already moving ahead. He tries to signal to Cirrus and Vimak to stay put and watch their backs but the swirling snow and the lack of time spent together as a whole may have let meant something was lost in communication. Gilari mutters to himself, "They'll figure it out" and he pads forward into the snow, maul at the ready, watching the white flaked bushes and light scrub all round.
The cart is stationed at the very edge of the woods, just within the loving embrace of nature. As Herman approaches, a soft howling wind blows through the area, masking his steps, he was truly one with this element, for now. Herman is able to approach the cart, though he is highly unaware of his surroundings. As he nears the cart, he can feel eye's on him, though he is not sure from where, and there is no sound to betray their location. The only noise in the area is the soft wind, and the light crunching of snow from his companions behind him.
Despite his best efforts, Cirrus continually has snowflakes landing in his eyes, obscuring his vision, aside from the cart and his allies he see's.... wait.. what made that snow fall from the tree? was it really just the wind? Cirrus thinks he can see the shifting of a shadow in the trees...
Vimak seems to be at the ready, but only see's about as much as Cirrus, which is only the flit of a shadow, but he has no idea of what it could be.. perhaps it was a bird, disturbed by the groups approach?
Gilari also gets the feeling of being watched, his eyes connecting with two, yellow beads in the tree looking right at him..... Those eyes meet for what feels like an eternity, before they vanish, and a moment later an owl bursts out of the tree, loosing snow from where it had just escaped from as it took flight. Somehow, despite this, the sensation of being watched continues.
Herman is quite sure this is the cart that was stolen, as it bears the same insignia as the one that Gundren had informed them of. Within the cart, it was barebones, strewn about as if someone had swiftly gone through, and taken what they wanted, and only left a few scraps behind, either out of neglect, or lack of concern.
Off to the side, though barely visible in the darkness of the deep night, several large trails of dark red stain the otherwise pristine white.. and the horses seem to be gone.
It's at this moment, that everyone realizes the forest is more silent than it should be.
(I took your perception rolls as primarily hearing, since none of your races have darkvision, this night is essentially heavily darkened, with the snow clouds blocking out the moon that would otherwise allow visibility and getting darker, the deeper in the night it goes. So any checks that rely on sight alone are at a disadvantage)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Herman affirms in his mind that this is indeed a trap of some kind. Who or what set this trap is not of his concern right now. He makes gestures with his hand to the rest of the party:
Two fingers pointing at his visor where his eyes should be: Someone is watching.
Unable to see in darkness, he tries to hear any sounds and holds his bow tight (holding on to readied action to shot the first hostile to come in to view). Herman falls back on his military training and gets behind the cart to get cover. If he hears anything suspicious, he will position himself with his back against the cart such that he has cover from it. If he can't hear it, Herman will move behind the cart (on the side facing away from the forest if there is such a side) and gaze to his front and sides. He is not exactly sitting but more crouching behind the cover of the cart. He will occasionally look back to make sure no one is throwing any bombs or anything over the cover.
Cirrus tries to stealth his way over to rejoin the group (22), he notices that everyone is using hand gestures, and not wanting be left out, he attempts his own, communicating something along the lines of "We all go into the forest? Forest jumps on us?" Basically asking if they should be investigating into the forest or preparing for an ambush. Cirrus reaches into his backpack and pulls out a plain-looking dagger, getting ready to throw it at any movement or sound he detects (Perception check:12).

Gilari spies the deep crimson amidst the snow and his anger towards this situation grows. "I've had enough of this" he mutters to himself. Pushing quickly forward he covers the distance towards the stains, thrashing about with his maul, more for show then any intended violence. As he stands mere feet from the fresh blood he cries into the darkness. "Well then, we have seen your bait! Where is the trap?"
He tries to blend in among the shadows around the wagon: Stealth: 7 and see if the footprints around it reveal if it was attacked or if the thieves fled from it: Perception:16. His goal is to see the direction of the foot traffic.
(OOC: Both rolled with disadvantage due to armor and darkness, respectively.
Herman is aware of more shifting in the tree's, as is Vimak, though they cannot see exactly where, their attention is drawn to the same spot. Vimak looks back down, attempting to discern the cause of the carts abandonment, searching for tracks, or other signs. As his fingers dip into the snow, he notices some parts of the snow are darker than others as he strains his eyes to see. The smell of copper and iron fills his nostrils, sticky wetness dripping like molasses from his hands. And a moment later he realizes that it is blood, coagulating from it's former host, who must have been removed from the area within the hour.
Cirrus somehow vanishes from sight and sound even out in the middle of visibility, perhaps some factor of his heritage had something to do with it? regardless, some panicked noises arise from the tree as soon as Cirrus seems to cease to exist. However, by this time, Gilari all but actually raging, charges forward, calling out his challenge.
His challenge is met as the sound of strings being hitched echoes through the night.

Even as the goblin shoots at Gilari, that causes Herman to be able to guess the relative location of the goblin before he actually see's it. His shot goes off (Should have been at disadvantage so rolling one more to determine hit: 19)just barely missing the Goblin, and getting stuck in the tree near where it's head had been.
The goblins are all in the tree's, currently, just out of range of melee. But a DC 10 atheltics roll as part of an attack will allow melee attacks to be within range, and 'sliding back down the tree' if that's what you choose to do will not provoke opportunity attacks as you're not moving of your own will.
And every square is 5 feet. Including diagonal movement.
Cirrus has perfect stealth so whatever he does on his turn will be at stealth advantage.
And the Goblins have half cover from the branches from 'ranged' attacks. But if Hermans first to-hit roll had been accurate, it would have hit. a clue as to their current AC.
As sharp pain stabs into his shoulder, Gilari winces but knows his armour has borne the brunt of the whatever struck him. He spins on the balls of his feet, and scours the surroundings for whatever struck him. A flicker of movement, a hand drawn upwards and he spies a small goblinoid form lurking in the trees above him mere feet away. With a loud "hah", he releases the tension in his muscles and lollops forward planting his last step against the tree to launch his maul strike upwards into the leafy canopy. And his foe's hiding place!
(about to pass out, but you gotta remember, it's night. As a melee attack their AC is lower for you, and you did pass your athletics (since it doesn't suffer from night) But you dont have darkvision, so your attack is at disadvantage, just roll another to-hit roll and i'll keep the 15 damage if it still hits ))
(So... since we have disadvantage from darkness, do we get double disadvantage or normal disadvantage if we try to aim for a specific part of the body?)
(I've rolled the extra die in the original post - and still hit! I know you've descriptively stated it's night, but can you please state any rules you want everyone to use in an encounter at the beginning (like the Athletics check one) as a reminder. If combat starts with tokens on a map, I assume my character can see them without any problems, and therefore can roll, react and act as normal)
