Cirrus responds to Vimak by holding out his pipes, "It's not as deadly as my rapier, but I have an enchantment I learned for self-defense I can use from twenty yards away at most. As for luring them out, I'm less sure. We could throw some object in there to draw their attention, something not very valuable that would make a clattering sound. Or maybe some meat as Herman suggested, not sure how many animals are active this time of night though. I do have some jerky in my pack, I could light the candle I have in there too, and maybe the smell of smoking meat would lure something out? If all else fails, I could just play some loud music on my pipes."

(you find the other axe. the DC checks, unless otherwise specifies for findign will always be 10, just can't use passive investigation to find a tossed object unles its in an enemy then.. well you already know where it is. lol)

"Hmm. I'd rather use smell than sound," Vimak whispers. "Sound could draw a bigger crowd. If we are dealing with wolves and a warg, the smell could attract them more specifically, because they have more sensitive noses than most beasts. Let's at least try smell first."
Having been given the go-ahead from Vimak, Cirrus pulls out one or more pieces of jerky from his rations, pulls out his candle form his backpack, and casts prestidigitation to light the candle, then uses the flame to set the jerky on fire, and places it wherever the party recommends he place it, be it right at the mouth or a few feet out. He then realizes he didn't have a plan for getting the smell into the cave, so he takes a few seconds just blowing at the smoke and trying to waft it towards the cave with his hands. After that he hurries over several feet to where the tree line meets the clearing (which I think you said was 30-40 ft. away from the opening of the cave), and tries to hide (stealth: 20) amongst the trees and watches what happens.

Herman decides to move away from the cave mouth (around 60ft from the entrance) and hide. He will ready an action to shoot at the biggest thing that comes out of the cave. (Order of priority: Worg or worse > Wolf > Goblin). Stealth: 25
Readied action rolls: I am rolling this assuming There is disadvantage due to darkness but advantage due to hiding so they cancel out. If I end up with advantage, then Herman will aim for the head to do extra damage. The advantage will then be used to cancel out the disadvantage for aiming at a specific body part.
21 Dmg: 10
OOC: Fun fact: Herman is actually based on a 40K Guardsman from the All Guardsman Party story and Doomguy. Which is why he's paranoid all the time and tries to "Cheese" fights whenever possible.

Vimak uses his shield as a giant fan, helping Cirrus waft the smell of meat farther into the cave. He tries to hide again: ( 12 with disadvantage due to his armor) and readies his throwing ask. He will aim for targets using the same order of priority as Herman.

Cirrus heats the jerky, making it a bit more malleable. It takes several minutes for a candle to truly get the heat going, and it's been roughly half an hour since you all arrived in the area. The moon has made its way to the far side of the land, still reflecting off the snow providing dim light everywhere except the cave beyond a few feet. (Meaning any fighting outside the cave is not at disadvantage)
Eventually though the jerky really begins to smell good, making those around it feel arbitrarily hungry themselves, though more of an 'I want to eat' as opposed to an 'I need to eat' that usually comes along with cooking food.
Initially, nothing is heard.... then, anyone who was still near the cave mouth could hear shuffling,, sniffing... then grunting. The sound of taut metal being pulled against echoing out as metal ground on metal.
20 - 15 - 21 - 17
Straining is heard, followed by pained whimpers. Then more rattling....
19 - 14 - 13 - 16
A single, metallic snap is heard, beyond that, more straining as the clattering of claws on rock echoes softly in a pitter patter. The jerky just outside the cave mouth. A white wolf appearing, seemign starved, it's ribs were exposed due to how thin it's skin was, it sniffed the jerky only once, before devouring it whole, almost not even chewing. At a great distance away, Herman was ready. And cirrus had once again channeled his inner air, stealthign away easily. Gilari is far enough away to not be immediately noticed. Vimak, to the side, near the goblins cave, hiding rather poorly, the cold making him shift his feet constantly, though low in overall noise.
17
As the lone wolf scarfs down the jerky, the shifting making the wolfs ears perk followed by a rapid shifting of its head towards the sound. At the same time, An arrow and an axe sing through the air.
9
Axe: Attack: 15 Damage: 12
Just before the axe slides through the wolfs neck, Vimak see's it's blue eyes stare at him, before the starved creature falls to the ground, lifeless.
15 - 15 - 15
Further in the cave, more straining is heard, but nothing more happens... the straining stops, and is once more replaced with silence.
Cirrus' internal monologue: "...huh... that worked out better in my head."

Herman says, "Straining and rattling... the wolves are restrained by chains. We may be able to move in if we are stealthy about it. The chains can break it seems."
Cirrus comes out form the trees to address the group, "It seems that we might have exhausted all of our options aside from a frontal assault. I suppose we can try to be as stealthy as possible, I don't know how successful all of us can be. I do worry about the sound of chains I heard, it sounded like any wolves that might be still chained might be strong enough to break the chains upon seeing us."

Herman's gears seem to be spinning again. "Do you have more jerky? What if we threw jerky to distract the wolves and send them deeper into the cave. With how hungry and starved they look, how likely do you think they'll go after the jerky instead of us, especially if they don't see us to begin with, and try to eat the goblins? Why kill things when you can get others to kill things for you? Better yet, how likely do you think the wolves are to leave and not return to the cave if set free?"
"Those are some very good points, Herman. So I suppose our first course of action is to sneak into the cave, and if the wolves are separated from goblins, then we can decide if we can decide if we want to free them or not. Then we can decide if we use my jerky (I think I have about four strips left) to lure them towards the goblins, or if we want to set them free. Herman, you look like a man who's good with animals,"(OOC: is that metagaming?)"I bet with the two of us combined we could tame these beasts to some extent. I've never had a pet, and I would be very happy if I could liberate any of these creatures from such inhumane conditions, be it through my own personal care, or simply freeing them from the cave." Cirrus then gets a look os sudden realization on his face, "On the topic of sicking these wolves on the goblins, what if one of us went back to the cart and brought back some pieces of goblin flesh? You know, feed it to some of the wolves, make them hungry for more?"

Herman says shaking his head, (regarding the bit about him being good with animals)"You got that wrong. I'm not good with animals. Maybe one of the others can help you get a pet or something." However, when Cirrius brings up the probability of feeding the wolves goblin flesh to prime them up, Herman says, "I like this idea of yours. That might actually work. If we could feed them a few bits of goblin while hiding and then, while they're busy eating, we can get sneak up closer and one of us can break their bonds while the other throws the bulk of dead goblin deeper into the cave. If all goes well, the wolves will reek havoc on whatever is inside and we can then hit them when they are distracted."
(OOC: exactly, a +2, that's much better than Gulari's +0 or Vimak's -1. If anyone can help Cirrus get these animals to do what we want, it's Herman)
"Now, this plan is built upon the premise that the wolves and the goblins are in different chambers, and considering we don't know the layout of the cave, we're going in blind in more ways than one. If they are in the same room together, then I think trying to get them to eat the goblins will be harder, right? We'll just have to hope for the best, I suppose. Now, I want to ask one last thing before we make our move, it's is very dark in that cave, and I can instantaneously light or snuff out this candle I have," he pulls out the candle he used to light the meat, "I know that would give away our cover, I just want to let you all know in case we need to fight and think it best to have some light, then you can give me a signal of some kind."

(OOC: But what about Cirrius? Does he not have anything better than a +2? Herman might be able to give him advantage by the Help action)
Herman nods and says, "It's good to know we have a instant light source in case we get into a fight. If it comes down to it, we may have to employ the 'breach-and-clear' tactic. I personally doubt a majority of the goblins will be in the same room as the wolves. At most, there should be around 2-3 of them if at all. If we get the drop on them, we have a good enough chance of taking the goblins out before they even know we're there."
He then looks toward the cave and says, "Regardless of what our final plan is (Let's see what Vimak and Gulari says. Maybe they'll be able to come up with a better plan) or how we deal with the wolves, one thing we should take absolute care to not let happen; we mustn't let any of our goblin targets alert the whole cave to our presence. No goblin must scream and no goblin must be allowed to escape."
Vimak says, "I like much of this plan, but animals dislike me and I don't hide well. I will offer whatever support I can, however. The wolves do look mistreated. It must be the goblins that have chained them up. But we should be ready if they are not willing to attack the goblins."
Vimak retrieves his throwing ax. He considers the dead wolf's empty eyes.
"As my aged mother used to say, wolves may prefer the demons they know," he points at the cave, "to the ones they don't," he points at himself and the others. "But sneaking in does seem to be the best plan. I can be ready to attack wolves that don't seem willing to help us."

(OOC: Yeah, I guess I was saying that out of the whole group, Cirrus and Herman have the best chance of handling these animals. Also, DM, how much time would you say Vimak has left on his Bardic Inspiration?)
"Okay, so it sounds like our plan is as follows:
First, one of us hurries back to the cart and brings back a goblin corpse or two.
Second, we sneak into the cave to the best of our ability.
Third, we find the wolves being chained up, and either we try to get them to kill the goblins or set them free.
Fourth, We find where the goblins are keeping our goods.
Fifth, we take them back to the cart.
Sixth, we get the cart to Phandalin, and we pretend none of this ever happened. And I'm assuming that we don't have to time to waste with any amount of sleep. So, without further ado, let's sneak in and pray to Lliira that everything works out, eh?" With that, unless anyone else has something to add, I assume the party makes their way into the cave.
