Trying to understand why the thieves would want a collection of preserves, Laza turns to Rothanr and says "Help me look around." and turning back to the owner asks "Is there anywhere in your shop that connects to the sewers? Perhaps where you dispose of your waste?"
investigation14 ((hoping Rothanr will join in the search~ or help18 ^^ ))
The dragonborn gives you a quizzical look. "The sewers? I guess the john connects there..." he leads you to the bathroom in the back of the shop. Sure enough, you see the same scratch marks running down the inside of the drop. You manage to get a bit of a closer look than before and you get the impression from the shape of the scratch marks that they appear to have been made from something metal, perhaps a weapon, tool or a clothing fastening scarping on the sides of the pipe. Past the financial value of the preserves, you don't notice anything else in the shop which would indicate a more specific reason for targeting the preserve collection.
Harpy walks up to the shopkeeper, "not to worry, we are looking into who is behind the recent rash of burglaries and will catch them soon enough. But until then please give me a dozen of those sweatmeats there," she points, "six in one bag and six in a separate bag if you would be so kind."
After paying for the sweetmeats Harpy will place one bag inside her pack to take home to Pike and the other bag she will keep a hold of so she can snack on the treats inside while continuing to look around the shop. Even giving Laza a hand and Help him should he require assistance with anything.
The dragonborn obligingly packs up your purchases as you request. "That will be 5 silver pieces please miss."After you pay he stares at you intently "Now you have your snacks, would you mind terribly getting around to catching those bastards?"
Harpy, Laza and Rothnar head towards Pudding Lane. When you arrive you see it's a run-down street of closely packed wooden houses. Most are single storey and a few have noticeably collapsed from poor maintenance and the rest look pretty run down. Wood is rotting, paint is peeling and many windows are broken and boarded up. All in all, you guess there are about fifty houses on this street which is a few hundred feet long. The good news is that the rain has eased to a drizzle.
Ruhvon, Erik and Brayton, if I understood correctly, you're progressing to the sewers under Pudding Lane carefully with Ruhvon in the lead? If so, Ruhvon, can you give me a perception check and a stealth check please?
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ruhvon eyes the vials that Brayton easily found. "Looks similar to what they found at Katar's." He nods in agreement in the dwarf's assessment of the possible means of entry. "I had that same notion as well."
"Agreed. We should not engage if we find them."He raises his shield above his head to prevent anything from splashing down on him from these pipes as he pushes on toward Pudding Lane.
Heading out, Laza says to Harpy and Rothnar "It seems our hunches were correct. Something is coming up from the sewer. I wonder what our team down there has found." adding "And if it's true that the stationary shop will be hit tonight, perhaps we can set an ambush for them."

Pudding Lane is the street you know their hideout to be on. The stationery shop is next to The Pantry. Which location would you like to explore?

Ruhvon makes good progress though the sewers towards Pudding Lane, sticking to the shadows and barely making a sound. When it comes time to cross the water flowing under Hangman's Lane Ruhvon makes the jump across effortlessly and lands silently.
Erik and Brayton are following about twenty feet behind Ruhvon. When it's Erik's turn to jump the main sewer he makes the five foot jump easily but, upon landing, dislodges a loose stone from the floor which scatters noisily across the floor. It's at this point Erik notices movement out of the corner of his eye. From a nearby crack in the wall three rats appear. These are larger than any creatures you've seen on the surface, rising to about two feet off of the ground. They have glowing red eyes and sharp gnashing teeth and look at you with hunger and malice. They advance on your party.
Brayton, Erik and Ruhvon, roll initiative. The fact you got a good perception roll means they do not get a surprise round as they ambush you.
Initiative roll for the rats:

Ruhvon, you're about twenty feet from the place the rats emerge. Erik, the rats are right on top of you. Brayton, you're about ten feet away, on the other side of the flowing water. The water is about five feet across, which is a short enough distance I won't make you roll to jump across it if you decide to as part of your movement. The other group do not know you're in combat.
Pudding Lane is the street you know their hideout to be on. The stationery shop is next to The Pantry. Which location would you like to explore?
Leaving the Pantry Laza says to Harpy and Rothnar "Somehow these places are being robbed at night from the sewers. We have two options: Set a trap here" pointing to the stationary shop "or confront them at their base. Thoughts?"
The half-drow spins upon hearing something splash in the water behind them. "Yes, these were the rats I tried to warn you about." Seeing the larger rodents emerge

Leaving the Pantry Laza says to Harpy and Rothnar "Somehow these places are being robbed at night from the sewers. We have two options: Set a trap here" pointing to the stationary shop "or confront them at their base. Thoughts?"
Harpy nibbles on a delicious sweetmeat as she considers Laza's proposed options, "well either one works, but we are under a bit of a time constraint to get this all cleared up. So setting a trap to catch them in the act will just eat up more of our precious time. I mean it's fairly obvious that they are behind things so I think we should just go on to their hangout and confront them. You know, get it all over with and out of way!"
She then smiles at Lanza and holds out the bag, "would you care for a sweetmeat, they are rather delicious?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Laza simply reaches out and takes a sweetmeat from Harpy and puts it in his bag for later, with a simple nod for thanks, replying "Then let us head towards Pudding Lane and deal with them. Hopefully our team in the sewers is doing well..." and starts to walk towards Pudding Lane to find their hideout - perception (with Harpy's help) 16
Harpy smiles as Laza accepts the offered treat, "you should really try them when they are still fresh, they are much better!" Then follows him towards Pudding Lane providing assistance or Help whenever needed. "I wouldn't worry about our companions, no doubt they can handle anything that comes their way, and are probably enjoying themselves exploring the sewers."
As you walk down Pudding Lane you try to look for clues about which of the houses might be the hideout. You're able to rule some out because they're too collapsed to be usable. Others you can rule out because you can see the inhabitants through windows and they're not halflings. You figure that the most likely hideouts are the ones with all the windows boarded up or with drawn curtains. Combining all this information, you narrow down your list of potential houses to four houses - Numbers 3, 17, 31 and 40. Each of these houses is fairly intact but appears to have had their windows deliberately obscured so the inside isn't visible from any angle.
This is the information you've gained through walking down the street and observing. If you want to narrow it down further, let me know you intend to interact with the houses and I'll assume you've done it to all of them and tell you what happens in each case.
After scouting the street Laza says to the his small group "Roth.. hang back a bit. Harpy.. stick with me. Oh. And have you got any more of those sweet meats?" After taking a couple more in a bag he walks up to each of those houses with Harpy at his side, knocks on the door, smiles, and says "Hi! I'm Paul, this is my partner Mur. We're new to the neighborhood and just wanted to introduce ourselves. We brought some sweet meats!"
Harpy looks in her bag, "there are only two sweetmeats left I am afraid but here you go," she says as she hands the bag to Laza. "I am not sure if this is such a good idea but I've got nothing else to suggest so, alright, sure let's go with your plan." Standing behind Laza, Harpy zips her mouth to watch and listen with interest...
