It's almost late afternoon, and you six strangers sit at various tables in a busy tavern common room. A youngish dwarf steps out from a back room, makes eye contact with each of you in turn, and points to the back room. You follow, each taking note of the others for the first time. You met this dwarf earlier today, though each of you separately, not together as a group and you have already discussed prices. His name is Gundren Rockseeker, and he has a job for you. The job was posted on noticeboards in one of the many squares around the city as well as other cities and towns surrounding the area, and caught your eye.
Now you are sitting together around a table in a quiet back room. Gundren stands at the head of the table, and behind him is a tall human man, in his early fifties, leaning against the wall and looking calmly at you all. Gundren clears his throat. Well, you've met me, but I'm guessing that you don't know each other so much, or maybe at all. Why don't you take a moment to meet your new workmates, while I go fetch the first half of your payment and some other things. Keep an eye on them Sildar, he says to the man as he walks briskly from the room, closing the door behind him. The man raises an eyebrow, but says nothing. Natalia! Gundren yells as he exits the room. A few brief moments pass and a woman enters the room that you had previously seen tending to patrons in the main hall comes in and says to the group. I am Natalia, Gundren has instructed me to serve you all of the food and ale or mead you wish for the night, and he will be back with your room keys for the night. We only have 4 rooms so someone will have to share. She smiles at everyone, but not too apologetically. Then she takes orders for food and drink.
(As I will be not on much tomorrow I posted today, Natalia has no answers for you, she will just bring you what you order, choices for food are a Meat Pie (Pork and Beef), Beef Stew, or the house special (Ham, Potatoes, Cheese, Onions, and Mushrooms)
(Please give a short physical description of your character, only what the others see, and then introduce yourselves in character, be sure to include the items that are visible or that would normally see, the room is fairly well lit with four sconces and the hearth, converse and share stories as you wish.)
An averaged sized human male, fairly non-descript, in leathers, walks up to a seat. He props his longbow against the edge of the table and puts his quiver and rutsack underneath his chair and feet. He's a young man (but not a teenager). He's on the lean side and couple of inches under 6 feet tall. He has weathered skin, dark hair and dark eyes.
to Natalia
Special, please. And a meade.
He looks around the room. He speaks in a fairly quiet voice
Name's Kal. I'm a scout, sniper. Used to be a soldier. Rockseeker said to come meet the rest of the team. Here I am.
Natalia takes your order for food and brings Kal a mead. She says to him, The special's are almost ready, I will bring you a fresh one as soon as it is done cooking.
Kal, having said what he had to say, simply nods to Natalia, acknowledging her statement. He continues to size up the rest of the folks in the room and isn't making an effort to be subtle about it.

Another human Male steps forward and rests his shield against the bar. His ruddy features framed by a near brown beard he looks about the room. He has a tricorn hat upon his brow, which initially seems at odds with the heavy armour he wears, until you notice the triple lightning tattoos tracing down his throat under the armour. Hail and well met friends. My names Branagh, Gundren told me he was putting a crew together for a job and I may be in need of a decent crew myself in the fullness of time. Natalia, sweetheart, a meat pie and some rum for me if you please.
Branagh rests a hand on the warhammer at his belt and surveys the room
Those who acknowledged Gundren’s gaze stand up from various locations in the tavern, separating themselves from the rest of the patrons and starting to file into the back room. A small hooded figure unnoticed by others before stirred on the far side of the tavern, pulling away from the shadowy corner they leaned against and nimbly catching up to the rest, silently bringing up the rear of this group.(OOC: was going to wait for everyone to post before doing mine since Niche got into the room last but yea just assume she is the last one to enter the back room if everyone is ok with that)
It wasn’t until inside the room did the small figure pull back the oversized hood so their features would be visible to the rest of the group. Those who noticed saw a young Halfling whose overall build is quite thin and just a little shorter than average Halfling height, standing at about 2’9”. Large, inquisitive brown eyes quickly moved from person to person, taking in details of those would will become new companions. Slightly uncharacteristic of typical halflings, a head of straight, straw coloured hair is pulled back into a short pony tail and their skin is on the pale side with only a hint of ruddy complexion. From what one can see under the dark grey cloak that covered most of what’s underneath, their clothing looks rather plain, wrinkled and worn in many places, and a rather new hand crossbow is strapped to their back.
For a moment it was a bit hard to discern this Halfling’s gender, but when they spoke up after a few others introduced themselves, the voice was quite clearly feminine. “Ah, um, nice to meet you all. I’m Niche, it’s my first time travelling with a party of adventurers so I hope it’ll be fun. I don’t know much and I’m not very strong but, um, I have keen senses and can be your look out or, or something.” A hint of timidness but mostly nervous excitement filled her voice. She paused, fingers twiddling before remembering to order from Natalia, “Oh and a house special please, I’ll pass on the drink unless you have something, uh, not so alcoholic?”
Natalia brings out a glass of rum, and a meat pie for Branagh, and says quietly The rum is for old times sake, Gundren said only mead or ale. Ill have to charge you for another. She winks at you as she walks over and sets down a steaming hot plate full of ham, potatoes, cheese, onions, and mushrooms all mixed in together with a savory sauce (a casserole) to Kal. She says There ya go, hot and fresh. The potatoes took a bit longer to cook than last time. Must have had smaller chunks last time.
She turns to the other four and says, What will you lot be having? I have the other room to serve too. Think about it and Ill be right back in and fetch what you need. When I come back in I will bring your special, and some water. She passes back by Sildar and disappears.
(Please list your order and address it to her when you post your characters, she will return when all characters have placed their orders.)
A stout halfling bounded through the streets, loudly huffing as he struggled to keep his breath. His large backpack clattered noisily, cooking utensils rattling around inside, as he careened towards the tavern to meet Gundren and his would be adventurers. Finally! An actual adventure! All those other knuckleheads laughed off an old man, but Gundren had seen his worth.Ha-ha! Franklin exclaimed as he tumbled through the front door of the tavern. Natalia, familiar with Franklin’s visage and his impatience for today’s meeting, pointed him to the room in the back. Excitedly, he ran for the door and drew his spear. The weapon was elegant and old. The wood had been stained cherry red with golden filigree winding up the long shaft to the silvered tip, shaped like a sharp leaf. He threw himself through the door and into the room.
Hail and well met, fellow adventurers! Let’s go forth and find glory on the road fate has laid before us! May the monsters and fiends that find us, fear us and the grand treasures we find be full of magic and jewels! Franklin took a beat to read the room. He wore old farmer’s clothes made completely unnoticeable by his cloak. Even up close, it was hard to tell if the rich, green garment was extremely well embroidered or actually made from leaves. In fact, it was spotted with bright blue flowers that seemed to bloom from the cloak. His vibrancy, however, seemed overbearing so he cleared his throat and took a seat. Luckily the vast bushiness of his mustache hid the red of his embarrassed cheeks as he waited for Gundren to return.
It's a dish best served cold Kal, the Flayed Men will get what's coming to them but I need to get stronger and have a competent crew with me before they'll get theres. Bran glances at the Halflings and smiles at the pair. I have been told that travelling with a halfling is lucky, with two in our group I can only hope that fair weather and good sailing awats!
Niche jumped a little at the older halfling’s entrance, shuffling a little away from the doorway and eyeing him with curiosity, her gaze particularly lingering on the decorated spear. “I’m not sure about fighting monsters but magic and jewels do sound like exciting additions to any adventure.” Shifting her attention back to the two bigger members, she added, “Although uh, these two certainly look strong enough to take down monsters. ”
Upon hearing Kal and Bran’s comment about Halfling’s luck bringing abilities, Niche smiled and nodded acknowledgement , “I hope for the same. There’s a saying of beginner’s luck too so I’d say we can only get luckier. May Lady Tymora guide our paths.”
Salty bastard offspring of a narwhal and a ogre is what they are. Pirate scum that killed my last crew and scuppered our ship. They left me for dead but thanks to Talos’ power I am still here and one day they’ll feel the wrath of the storm! Bran realises he’s started shouting by the end of his sentence. He coughs Sorry touchy subject
Natalia swings back in and delivers a fresh plate of the house special, along with a stein of water to Niche. She glances around expectantly waiting for someone to place an order.

Bran huh? Most people looking to hire a crew don't join crews. At least in my experience. What kind of job?

Kal tries to determine if he knows anything about "Flayed Men"
If necessary: flat d20 roll: 2, +1 is my modifier on any likely skill check, unless it is a weird roll for some reason.
Heard Halflings were lucky myself.
