During the downtime when not traveling Nedrick would like to find someone to teach him Dwarvish to accumulate a few days of training in exchange for 1 gold piece per day.
The PHB notes:
First, you must find an instructor willing to teach you. The DM determines how long it takes, and whether one or more ability checks are required. The training lasts for 250 days and costs 1 gp per day. After you spend the requisite amount o f time and money, you learn the new language or gain proficiency with the new tool. - PHB Part 2 Adventuring p.187
So long as your DM feels the PC is a skilled enough instructor then the DM will arbitrate what else in necessary. The costs and length of time should still be the same, they can either be paid from one PC to the other or be used up as "training costs" for materials over the 250 days, again at DM discretion. As waxeagle noted, this would take up the downtime days of both the PC learning and the PC training, precluding them from other tasks.
Mort prepares his ritual and completes it successfully. Turning to the note he reads the note. It contains a scouting report of your battle with the earth elemental. A few highlights include "A barbarian that never hits. A druid that does not like to heal and a wizard who blows things up." After a description of your battle, it gives a relatively path for your return trip with a simple word at the end that says "Kill"
Nedrick is able to get Jorful to train him a bit in dwarvish. He has 249 days to go before he has learned the language.
Master dwarf I entrust my greataxe to your skilled hands. Tell me, with this ore is it possible to create an even stronger weapon or are you better off improving on my existing one?
Hovering in the hottest areas of the Plane of Fire, the City of Brass sits in an enormous hemisphere of brass some 40 miles across. A curtain of beaten brass surrounds the entire city, stretching for hundreds of miles and giving the city its name. Throughout the cosmopolitan city, the dangerous fire effects of the Elemental Plane of Fire are suppressed by the will of the Grand Sultan, Marrake al-Sidan al-Hariq ben Lazan, in an effort to foster more interplanar trade, most notably is the trade with the Nine Hells. Surrounding the city itself are large tracts, known as the Obsidian Fields, used for the cultivation of the exotic crops that inhabited the plane of fire. There are also areas for the slaves that mostly mine tin, copper, and diamonds for their efreeti masters.
Forgemaster Grommouc has informed you that you will be entering through the Diamond Gate and there are particular rules that are in place in the City of Brass. Most importantly by night a strict curfew is enforced. All shops are shut up and all citizens and visitors must be off the streets, or else they face arrest.
Mort is also able to get 1 day lessons from Jorful. This cost 1g and he has 249 days to go before he knows the language.
OOC: it is about time to advance the campaign. Right now the 3 weapons to be built are a rapier, a crossbow and upgrading Hunding's axe. If Hunding will update his inventory to leave his axe and equip another weapon if he chooses (maybe a war pick?)Also TT if you like you can roll for your dream before you leave. I would like to get this all finished before we move on to the next area.
When Rhaucred wakes after the expedition he feels a very different connection to his magic. A power he never knew was there now feels to bubble up from someplace in him. Broken open by his prolonged use of his acquired magical powers.
Rhaucred would like to attempt to find things in the castle of elvish make to attempt to spark words or a memory from the voice in his head and figure out what has happened. He will probably try to meditate or something as well.
If he encounters anyone as he explores he is not shy about saying what he is up to.
The group spends a long night studying and resting in their preparation for their journey to the City of Brass. Much has changed since their initial journey and their strength seems to continuously grow. Despite the sun never changing, the group has slowly gotten used to this new world and the "time" that seems to pass here. Upon waking the group meets Hovarlig outside the large refurnished castle doors. Hovarlig greets them with a hearty hello and says "Now just remember the curfew. I will be staying the night in the Keffinspires district. We shall meet up at the Diamond Gates again in four days. This should give us plenty of time to find what we need to prepare for our rescue mission."
Hovarlig then pulls a bracelet from his pocket and attaches it to his wrist. He looks at the group and with a somber look on his face he says "I always hated this thing. Just follow my lead when we get there and yuns'll be fine. Now everyone grab on to each other and touch my shoulder." The party follows his lead forming a curved line around him. They see Hovarlig grab the bracelet and begin to spin it around his wrist. It rolls faster and faster and begins to glow gold. Sparks begin to emit from his bracelet, slowly at first, but then growing with more and more frequency and intensity. Suddenly, everyone feels theirs bodies pulled forward towards Hovarlig. The world spins around them, colors blending in and out, their ears start popping and begin to ring. The group starts to feel overwhelmed by the disorientation, when just as quickly as it started, the sensation ends and they appear in a new room.
The groups looks forward and sees a cobblestone floor leading to a large, shimmering archway. The archway reflects and distorts the flames from the brass torches around the room. Inside the arch, is a half raised gate with bars that shine of brass. Hovarlig turns to the party and says "Not too bad of a trip was it? Now let us get into the city." Hovarlig advances to the gate and is greeted by a being that the group has not seen before.
Hovarlig approaches and says "Good day ole great one." He then proceeds to show him his wrist. "I come bringing travelers to do trade among this magnificent city." He then bows his head but quickly looks up again stumbles for words for a second before finally saying "And.. er.. with your grand permission of course."
The being in front of him looks down and sees Hovarlig, then says with a deep voice "Your mark." Hovarlig raises his wrist quickly, showing the bracelet that he adorned before the trip. The creature looks closely at the bracelet and then utters a single word "Proceed." Hovarlig raises his head and then walks through under the gate.
As the rest of the party approaches and attempts to go through the gate, the being takes one step in front of them and says "Halt, what goods and business do you plan to do here outsiders?" Hovarlig quickly turns around and starts to speak, but the being, without even moving his head loudly speaks "Silence! Or I will have your tongue. Now again I ask, what goods and business do you have here in the City of Brass?"
“Its as our guide said, we have a slew of warpicks and other goods to trade within the city. but i must confess, we are here mostly to witness the great brass city in person. Ive heard many stories and have desired to stand within its walls for some time now.”
mort pulls out his flask, shakes it and frowns as he peers into its contents.
“First things first! *hiccup* my comrades and I could use a stiff drink. wont you join us?”
Mort slowly walks forward explaining his desire to trade within the city. Mort removes his flask and shakes it saying "But first things first! *hiccup* my comrades and I could use a stiff drink. wont you join us?” He then looks at the man standing in front of him, wine slowly dripping down his face onto his shirt. It is in that moment that Mort realizes his failure to screw the lid on completely from his last drink. There is a clear look of hatred in the guard's eyes. He slowly wipes his face, looking down to his shirt and seeing the wine stains. "The disrespect.... How could you..."
Hoavrlig says "Aye' aye aye' it was just an accident! We can..."
The guard reaches down and puts a single hand on the hilt of his sword. Looking at Mort he says with clinched teeth "I believe you owe me a new shirt. This is of the finest cloth in the city. I expect the 10 gp for the shirt and another 10 gp for your disrespect."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Nedrick moves forward quickly grabbing Mort's robes and pulling him back and Nedrick shoots Mort a look meaning let me handle this.
"My sincerest apologies! My wizard friend here is a clumsy one. Do not fear it will not happen again."
Nedrick pulls out his pouch and hands the guard 20 gold pieces.
"Please accept this as penance for such an embarrassment. 10 gold for the shirt, 10 gold pieces for the disrespect, as requested."
Nedrick then looks at the shirt and hands the guard another 10 gold pieces.
"My that is a fine shirt. Such style is something someone such as myself can respect! Here is another 10 gold pieces purely out of hope that may make recommendations for where we should visit while in town. With someone so knowledgeable of the city and with such fashion. I cannot think of a better way to spend my gold.
The guard smirks at Nedrick's last bit of gold and says "Well, if it is all in the means of trading, I best not deny your questions or the Sultan would have my head. Is there anything in particular you are looking for?"
"Oh thank you greatest one! I am particularly interested in magical items, wands, and scrolls. Where would we find such items in the Brass City? Of course, there may be items we do not yet know that we need or even know that they exist! If there are some merchants who are more popular that you would recommend please let us know.
The guard responds "There are too many merchants in this city to suggest just one. Each district is known for certain goods. Currently you are entering the Keffinspires district, mostly inhabited by Azers, like your slave over there. If you are interested in crafted goods, you should check out the Street ofSteel. Now for a diverse selection of trade, I would suggest the Pyraculum district. The entire district is dedicated to be the central market place. The Street of Stelae is the center place for the market. There are other more specialized stores in the separate district, but the central market in Pyraculum has a diverse marketplace."
The group safely walks into the city where they are greeted by Hovarlig. He says "Shew, that was a close one. I will be heading to the Street of Steel. Just remember it is about 12 hours to curfew and to meet back here in four days." Hovarlig then departs..
Following Nedrick the group heads to the Street of Stelae. They pass by through the Keffinspire district, filled with azers, then a warehouse district know as Marlgate. Finally after a 3 hour walk, they make it to the Pyraculum district. Reading the street signs, they are able to locate the Street of Stelae.
Turning onto the street, they are greeted by large statues of efreeti depicting scenes of their dominance over creatures of the fire plane. Lining the streets are also a great many shops. They quickly notice a vendor that seems to be selling gemstones. The group approaches and is sees many baskets containing almost any gemstone they have ever heard of.
”Greetings, I would like to sell these gemstones. I would also love to know if you have any gems with magical powers. Also, would you know of a good place to purchase smut in this city? I am looking for the popular novel, “Tusk Love” specifically.”
Rhaucred, eyes wide from the encounter with the guard says "i had the sudden feeling that was going to go much worse. Good save Nedrick.* turning to Mort* If you need some guidance next time Mort I am more than happy to oblige.
Nedrick walks up to the vendor and batters with him for a bit. He is able to get a fair market value for all the gems he is trying to sell. Nedrick is able to sell the gemstones for 200g. The split for everyone is 40g.
