DM (Fairly experienced with D&D, 2nd attempt at PBP) Looking for 4-6 players (Preferably within the GMT time zone) for running the ‘Out of the Abyss’ campaign. Once the campaign is finished, everyone will be given the option to move on to some home-brew or possibly another campaign if all goes well. Hopefully starting on Tuesday 21st at 17:30 GMT or possibly sooner if there is enough interest. Looking for a fairly high amount of role-playing with a tactical mind for combat. Apologies in advance for the amount of text, but if you’re not prepared to read through this then PBP probably isn’t the right option for you.
All official content accepted. The only races that I will not accept for Warforged as I feel that they don't necessarily belong in this setting. This adventure is highly based within the underdark and so, if anyone does have a race that they think could fit in, then please let me know and we can possibly look into making something that could work as a homebrew creation.
Characters will start at level 1
Character advancement will be done through XP.
Ability scores with the point buy system.
The use of Feats are available but only when you are given the option between feats and ability score improvement.
Starting equipment is the Equipment option. Not Gold. When you start this campaign, you will not have any of your personal belongings, but if you can keep note of what you would normally begin with, then there may be a chance along the way to pick up what has been lost.
Negative actions against other party members (attacking, stealing from) do come with consequences. It might seem fun at the time but not so fun when the whole party turns on you.
Please keep opinions about other players actions to yourself, even if you do it "In Character" please try not to offend the actual player, we are all here to have fun and have a good adventure.
Please send me a private message with the following details:

(OOC - If she doesn’t kill the bandit, Claura will stand her ground. If she kills him, she will move to defend her allies)
sent you a pm there aswell, I'm around for a while so if you like the character but want me to change something I can. if not then all the best in your game! looks like it's gonna be fun.
Recruiting is now over. I will get in touch with all applicants within the next few hours to let you all know whether you will be taking part or not. Many thanks, Luke.
You each sit on a large wooden bench in a cell in a mysterious place deep beneath the ground known as the Underdark. There are fifteen other shapes sat around near you. Each of you have been here for a little while, some longer than others. A poison runs through your veins, corrupting your mind and making it difficult to concentrate. Each time you open your mouth to speak, your mouth feels incredibly dry and your words fail you. Over the past days that you’ve spent in this dark place, you’ve felt tired and weak, the whole experience feels like some sort of sick and twisted dream.
The weight of a large metal collar sits around your neck with four large chains dangling from it. Two chains are attached to shackles on your wrists while the other two are connected to shackles on your ankles. You can move freely around the dark cell in which you reside but your movement is slow and cumbersome. As you sit, trying to focus your mind, you hear a grating voice from the other side of the large steel gate at the entrance of the cell.
“Wakey wakey, rise and shine!” The voice cries out before it says in a quieter voice, as though it’s talking to another guard outside “Open this gate. The mistress wants them to be ready for the journey in a few days” You hear a low and slow voice reply “Yes Shoor, right away”
After the jingling of keys and the sound of lock clicking into place, the gate slowly opens with a slight creak and you see an elf with dark skin and silvery white hair tied back into a short ponytail make his way into the cell. The armour he wears is made up of a studded leather cuirass with large knee length boots. In one hand, he carries a long stick, at the tip sits some form of strange looking fungal matter. In his other hand, he carries a large glass beaker of translucent green liquid which he begins pouring into the mouths of the other prisoners within the cell. “Drink up, drink up. We’ve got a long walk ahead of us and you’re no good like this”
As he pours the liquid into your mouth, this vile taste sits on your tongue, the liquid is hard to swallow but eventually it makes its way down your throat and slowly, your dark surroundings begin to get darker as your eyes begin to shut.
Some time passes and eventually you each begin to wake. You have a slight headache but your senses seem to have returned to normal. You now look around and can make out the slightly wet rock walls that surround the cell, the spiders webs that sit in the corners, you hear the faint rushing of water coming from beyond the large gate sitting between your current predicament and your freedom. You also see the numerous creatures and people, all dressed in the same tan coloured cotton tunic and pants and configuration of chains that you are wearing, each in a similar situation to yourself. You see:
A peculiar looking creature that looks almost like a mixture between a human and a dwarf. He has rough white skin with blue undertones, a big white beard that covers a large part of his face and he glances around the cave with pupilless eyes, making quick head movements, observing his surroundings in an odd manner. Those of you familiar with creatures of the Underdark know him to be a Derro.
A large bear like creature with a greenish blue tint to its fur. To those of you that are familiar with it, this creature is known as a Quaggoth and stands about 8ft tall. This Quaggoth only wears the cotton trousers and chains, the tunic would never have fitted around its hulking great body and thick, tree trunk like arms, it’s large teeth protrude from its mouth in places and it lies in the corner of the cell, growling slightly with every deep snore that escapes its mouth.
One of the more familiar looking folk within the cell to those that come from above ground. A female dwarf lies bunched up with her knees raised. She has medium length, fiery red hair that’s tied into pigtails that droop down over both shoulders, her face looks hardened and although she’s sleeping, you can still see a slight frown in her expression.
One of four deep gnomes that are currently inside the cell, this dark skinned gnome has a large bulbous nose and his ears appear to jut out at jaunty angles. As he sleeps, he continues to have a smirk on his face.
The first thing you notice about this muscular man are his two large lower teeth that grow from behind his bottom lip, his grey skin has a hint of green colour to it that helps confirm that this is an Orc. A small tuft of black hair sits on top of his head which then continues to grow and form a braided ponytail that sits over one shoulder, his large sideburns reach down and almost touch the corners of his mouth.
Another Dark elf or Drow shares the cell with you, he too is bound and in chains. His long white hair covers both of his shoulders and his dark ears poke out of the sides. He sits on a bench, awake, trying to figure out a way of removing the shackles.
A large fish like creature with purple scales that cover its body, in the Underdark this creatures race is known as the Kuo-Toa. It too is only wearing a small pair of pants due to its size and the large section where its head, neck and torso all seem to blend together into one. It sits awake, slightly timid and shy.
If you hadn’t have already seen it moving during your time here, you’d have thought that this creature was just a large pale mushroom growing within the cell. It is however, a myconid sprout. Part fungus, part living creature, it has two small stumps at the base of the stem that it uses to walk.
9 & 10. Two more deep gnomes, each with almost identical features, they both have very small noses that seem sore due to the red blotches that cover them, small narrow eyes and large ears that look as though they are clogged up with the hair growing out of them. One of the gnomes is Male, the other is female. The Female has long scraggly hair that runs down her back, while the Male has a small section of hair right at the top of his head.
(OOC - Each describe your characters physical appearance and their actions. So far, the only prisoners awake are the Derro, the Drow and the Kuo-Toa. The other players characters will wake up once they describe themselves)
Verim stirs and opens his eyes. The eyes burn like wildfire, a white and yellow tinge like torches in the darkness. His dark skin in the light preventing a huge amount of details apart from a large arched nose, thick lips and gaunt like cheekbones. A black goatee wraps around his mouth up to under his ears. A dump of hair dangles down, most likely held together by string or a decorative beard bead. Most distinctively is a glisten on his cheek, a wrapped coiled snake which appears to be made of gold imbedded ,which wraps around his face, past near his left eye, his forehead and around his neck, not quite a tattoo but it seams to sit under the skin.
Verim arches back and grabs onto his bald head with both hands as the liquid goes down his throat (as this happens the snake appears to move and wriggle under the skin)
“MYSTRA MYSTRA, EXPELL THIS POISON FROM MY VEINS, LET ME TOUCH YOUR LIGHT ONCE MORE AND LET YOUR PRESENCE BRING BACK MY POWER”
Verim then goes silent after the chant, closes his eyes, palms his hands over them and starts to rock, whilst silently reciting the same verses over, and over.
As Verim chants to himself he doesn't receive any holy enlightenment or magical presence.
The Derro looks over to him and tilts his head, smiles with a large toothy grin and with a broken high pitched voice says something in Undercommon. "Ha, gilrath un von do cas un dre?"
There is movement from the other side of the rope bridge as the three Drow guards seem to begin moving after hearing the shouts from within the cell. The Derro looks in their direction and remains quiet, still with a smile on his face.
Spoiler for those that speak Undercommon:
"Ha, you think your gods will hear you all the way down here?"
An olive-skinned creature stirs, pulling himself up to one of the benches. He sits there a moment with elbows on his knees, massaging his temples and running his hands through his short brownish-red har - trying to regain his senses. His muscular arms tug fruitlessly at the bindings. Instinctively he grasps for something at his chest, however, he doesn't find what he's looking for and soon hangs his head, realizing nothing has changed.
Tobias looks up and scans the area with light brown eyes. His lower tusks not protruding even half as much as the full blood orc still asleep. He stands revealing simple traveling clothes with tattered light-weight robe atop, displaying a white, gauntleted hand in white over the right of his chest. He shuffles over toward the middle of the cell and peers out the door.
"Is this Menzobarranzan?" he asks to no one in particular, then looks to the derro and drow. "I remember hearing one of the priests mention the place."
Cyndral fights back a groan as the poison's more potent effects begin to wear off, the barely-there blue-grey of his irises beginning to take in what he could of the cell. Even in the black and white of the darkvision, he he could see mostly by expression that none of the other inhabitants were here by choice. Out of habit, he cleared his mind as best he could, shaking a bit of his loose silvery-white hair out of his face and trying to concentrate on the shadow-stuff that he wove as armor, out of both habit and fear. When none came to his bidding, the fear grew, and the realization that he would need to make allies sooner than later sat like a stone in the pit of his stomach.
Surveying the options, it seemed that his best- and yet worst- option would be to try finding kinshiip with the other drow in the cell. Shakily, clumsily, he got to his feet and hobbled to where the elf-kin rested, dropping himself to sit beside them without any of the usual grace of his people. He hoped against hope that the full-dark of the cell would hide they gleshy greyness of his skin that made him stand out like a sore thumb to full-bred Drow, but he knew if the man looked close enough, the signs would be there to find. The odds that such a man would be kind to a half-breed like himself were slim, he knew, but any port seems welcoming in a storm. With a sigh, Cyndral quietly mumbles in Elvish, knowing his surfacer accent will sound atrocious, "Hail, cousin. It must be odd tidings indeed that find you locked up with the rest of us rabble. Can you tell me where we are? Or why my magics don't seem to be responding at all?"
As Tobias asks the question, the Derro looks at him, trying to discern what he has said. Recognising the single word 'Menzobarranzan' he smiles once more and whispers "Gre vu so un Menzobarranzan, lith fo te la tiny"
Spoiler for those that speak Undercommon:
"You'd know if this was Menzobarranzan, this is somewhere much smaller"
As Cydral speaks to the sleeping Drow, it stirs and begins to wake, looking back at him with slight confusion but also pain in his face. He replies in Elvish “Cugino? Pensi che io sia imparentato con te? Ha! Sei la metà di quello che è il mio popolo. Anche se ... il mio popolo è quello che mi ha catapultato in questo posto ... Per Lolth! Cosa ho fatto?”
Spoiler for those that speak Elvish:
Cousin? You think I am related to you? Ha! You are half the man that my people are. Although... my people are the ones that threw me in to this place... By Lolth! What did I do?
At this point, the small mushroom like creature begins to move, it takes a bit of effort but eventually it gets itself onto its small stumps that you could call legs. The top of the growth on its head begins to open and suddenly a thin layers of dust-like particles begin to fill the chamber. You each hear a small voice inside your heads, even those sleeping can hear this small voice. "Hopefully this will help with the communication issues. Just think of the words you want to say to the people or person that you want to say them to and they will hear and understand you" He looks up to Tobias "I'm Stool by the way. I don't know where we are but I don't think it's Menzobarranzen"
You all hear the voice of the Drow inside your heads, this time he appears to be speaking common "Menzobarranzen? No, this, this is Velkynvelve. I... I think I heard them talking about Ilvara, she runs Velkynvelve"
A small figure sits up from the far corner, this might come as a surprise to those near as they almost certainly weren't noticed before. They are slim but clearly athletic and fair skinned. though they appear human their hair shimmers slightly in the minimal light coming through and their dark eyes sparkle and are shot through with purple, green, blue and pink giving the appearance of miniature galaxies. They are young but their hands and eyes imply they are wiser of the world than their youth suggests. As they get there barings they listen to the conversations around them.
(To the half orc) "Hey man, wanna keep it down? some of us are working off a hell of a hangover."
Then when Stool introduces the telepathic spores they just slump down and grumble to themselves "never mind then"
A muscular, short, humanoid rouses himself and comes to and looks around, shaking the cobwebs out of his head. His poorly cut, untended hair gives him a bit of a wild look. On one shoulder is an old, healed wound in the crude shape of a dragon; a brand of some kind. On the other shoulder, a finely worked tattoo of a dragon in yellowish-bronze ink. There is a look of focus and attention in his eyes as he glances around.
Looking around at his fellow prisoners, Gnarls comes to the only conclusion his limited life experience can allow him: He has been captured as a slave once again, but there is little evidence of the benevolence or honor of his previous captors turned clansmen. Certainly there was none when what can only be Dark Elves slaughtered most of his tribe.
Instinctively, he scans his fellow slaves to sum them up as combatents. The Orc and the bear like creature look impossibly strong, but one does not survive amongst the Uthgardt fearing strength. Their strength can be used against them. The 2 drow must be weak to be enslaved by their own kind -- they can be dismissed. The unknown is what he must be wary of, as he eyes up the Aasimir, Kua-toa, and deep gnomes for possible weaknesses.
Aloud he says:"Do any of you speak common? We must band together to survive. With this many different creatures surely they mean to fight us. Kill each other only if we must. Feign injury and defeat where you can. Embellishment and flair is the key."
As the voices start entering his head space: "Which one of you is doing this? This could be of great use when the fights start"
The full Orc sits up and looks over at Gnarls “Ha, what you know of fighting little one? Ront would squish you like bug”
Shaking his head and chuckling, Gnarls says "Predictable Orc is predictable. This is why you would lose. Maybe you should save that passion for those who imprisoned you"
OoC: Changing my text color to be more different than El
The half-orc works his jaw as if he is trying to adjust to a change in air pressure. He looks down curiously at the strange little creature and eventually gives it a smile. He begins to say aloud, "Thank you, Stool."Then tries the new communication method, "I am Tobias" He gives it a pat on the head. "This should be helpful."
Tobias is about to add to the halfling's comments about organizing an escape when Ront speaks up. He looks to the orc and shakes his head. [orcish] "There's no need for that, friend. We're all in the same position here. The little one makes a good point."
Ront stands up, you see his full size, standing at about 7ft, his muscles flexing as he looks at the halfling. The chains from his restraints rattle and he looks down, remembering the shackles around his arms and legs "If Ront wasn't in chains, little man would be split in two" The Orc sits back down, keeping two eyes fixed on Gnarls until Tobias speaks up. Ront looks at the half-orc "You have plan to get us out half-breed?"

He shuffles over toward the middle of the cell and peers out the door.
"Is this Menzobarranzan?" he asks to no one in particular, then looks to the derro and drow. "I remember hearing one of the priests mention the place."
Cyndral

Aloud he says: "Do any of you speak common? We must band together to survive. With this many different creatures surely they mean to fight us. Kill each other only if we must. Feign injury and defeat where you can. Embellishment and flair is the key."
As the voices start entering his head space: "Which one of you is doing this? This could be of great use when the fights start"
"wow man, instant downer"
El stands and starts patting their face as though to wake themself up. It appears to work as they look sharper and more aware.
The full Orc sits up and looks over at Gnarls “Ha, what you know of fighting little one? Ront would squish you like bug”

El doesn't respond but mutters under their breath "Well, Ront would certainly try..."
He begins to say aloud, "Thank you, Stool." Then tries the new communication method, "I am Tobias" He gives it a pat on the head. "This should be helpful."
Tobias is about to add to the halfling's comments about organizing an escape when Ront speaks up. He looks to the orc and shakes his head. [orcish] "There's no need for that, friend. We're all in the same position here. The little one makes a good point."
Ront - Orc
Ront stands up, you see his full size, standing at about 7ft, his muscles flexing as he looks at the halfling. The chains from his restraints rattle and he looks down, remembering the shackles around his arms and legs "If Ront wasn't in chains, little man would be split in two" The Orc sits back down, keeping two eyes fixed on Gnarls until Tobias speaks up. Ront looks at the half-orc "You have plan to get us out half-breed?"
