This post is a placeholder for a campaign titled "In Search Of..." Players in this campaign have little to no experience with D&D and are using this as a way to learn the game. From the campaign description:
The party has been recruited by a wealthy benefactor to seek out some of the rarest treasures of the Forgotten Realms. Some have been lost in forgotten corners of the Underdark or abandoned fortresses reclaimed by the wild. Others are locked away, prized pieces of other collectors who will do anything to protect them. Still others may not even be on this plane of existence.
How was your character brought into this mission? What are they seeking themselves? How far are they willing to go to make someone else wealthy?
The party is in a tower outside of Neverwinter that serves as their appointed meeting place. They're here to meet a representative of their benefactor -- their counselor -- who purportedly has some sort of mission for them. The Benefactor has no name, no known identity, just money, and he has paid everyone in the party very well to this point. Their training, their equipment, their travel expenses, all covered in whole or in part by The Benefactor. And now their debt is due and they have been called to this place to begin working for Them in whatever capacity they are needed to.
The Benefactor's Counselor is a man named Tallyrand. He is out of place here, fussing around the room at the top of the tower to make certain everything is in its place, clearly excited and anxious for the arrival of his charges.
Players: Introduce your characters, where they're from, what they're about, etc.
Chaz is a super ambitious Junior in college, who is studying whatever he can, but has a focused study on history. He himself comes from money. His dad is a lawyer and his mom is the top surgeon in the US. You can typically find Chaz in the library with his nose in a book. However, some nights you will find him running his frat house just doing his thang. Chaz's advisor put him up for a contest because of his immense knowledge, that he won, to seek out some of the rarest treasures hosted by a wealthy benefactor.
Cael was a lowborn who showed enough talent to get into Candlekeep. Granted, they never kept him for long but when he left he soon found himself in the employ of a lowly lord (whose name you constantly forget, even though Cael is always telling you) as the court wizard. Even though the lord had no power, Cael loved the life of nobility. He spent seven years under the employment of this lord, which abruptly ended when an orcish axe found its way inside the lord's head. Cael spent the last few months homeless on the streets of Neverwinter when he saw the Benefactor's message. To Cael, this was a sign that maybe he could return to power--and maybe even gain his own castle in the process.
When most people see Beauregard Gray, they think she is a strong and intimidating individual who loves to break things and fight, when in reality, she is a giant teddy bear. She is scared of a lot, ghosts, the dark, crabs, if Beau doesn't know what it is, she is scared. Being born into slavery, she was always used for her strength, often hauling ores and other heavy materials down in the mines, however, she would always try to sneak away to learn and observe the world around her. She was surrounded by her kind and her human keeper all her life, not learning from much else. After many beatings from slave owners, Beau used her strength to break away from those who have kept her prisoner all her life. She escaped to the town of Neverwinter, wanting to learn from those around her. She has been stared at for her size and hates the fact she is only seen for her strength. She learned of the Benefactor's message and figured she might as well use her strength to her advantage, after all, sometimes knowledge is expensive.
Who would arrive at the tower first? I think it would be Cael to try to get close to power right away, or Chaz, for the same reason but also because Chaz.
Cael would arrive first due to the close proximity of his home (the streets) to the tower. He picked his best garb from his old days of living under a noble: a red doublet slashed with gold and a small cape over his shoulders, and a fancy hat with a feather (that has seen better days). Cael understands too well the principle of dress to impress and fears that the sandals he chose to wear would ruin his look. He would have brought boots if someone had not stolen them while he was sleeping.
Cael enters the tower and makes his way into a room where Tallyrand is seated at the head of a long wooden table, the same stone gray color as the floor. Tallyrand appears to be in some sort of meditative state.
Chaz arrives late due to a minor inconvenience in his trip to Neverwinter. When he finally arrives, he goes on the hunt to find Tallyrand to check in and learn more about his mission.
