Throin, Storm, David, and Arthmael, head to the stables, it isn't long before you are able to get saddled up and ready to go, You arrive at the front gates 3 mounted officers arrive and you begin your journey out the main gate.
The day is sunny a light breeze brings the scent of pine in the air from the forests to the north, about a quarter mile the road turns West and the fresh pine smell in the air is replaced by the smell of decay as the road runs along the northern border of the Balorian swamp. Sgt. Graham leading the patrol points to the swamp " you don't want to take horses in there the water is too deep and the things that swim below the surface will gnaw at their legs so no swimming, be sharp up ahead as goblins in boats will use bows and slings to attack those on the road" he points ahead "it is a good 11 days to pikes fork and another 12 Days north from there to endecker, the South fork leads to the town of lorraine, its a cattle town, best steak you will ever have is the Mapa Inn if you find yourselves there.
David puts all of this into his mental map of the layout of the territory while patting his horse before asking, “So we know there’s goblins ahead that attack travelers? Aren’t we supposed to stop that here?”
Graham confirms "Yes but finding their base camp is hard the hills are dotted with caves, Our intelligence reports have come up with 3 main tribes in the area. The skulls and Reds run the hills and Forest areas. but the largest is the muds they run the swamp. Perhaps, your team will have better luck in locating their camp if that is the task Krackenhammer gives you. You should be having a mission briefing soon.
He continues "We have set up 4 camps of 5 officers each every 3 hours along the road to try and locate their base and to protect those using the road it has slowed their process but their is still work to do. reinforcements have been sent for but it could be months before they arrive."
Graham points out a bloody spot in the grass nearby, here a traveler was killed traveling alone. it is believed that a group of bandits we estimate 3 or 4 individual. they are suspected of 3 robberies and murders they leave no witnesses. a group has been sent to find them,
Throin would have told David, while absently rubbing a pendant at the fastening of his grey cloak, ”My mission is to seek out danger from the wilds where it threatens civilized folks, lend help to local forces where they need it. Heard about the work here and it seemed right along the lines of what I’m looking for.”
Throin rides along chatting with whoever will talk, looking at what’s pointed out by the patrol. ”Goblins and bandits, eh. Sounds like problems that need some serious fixing.”
A horse frothing at the mouth, comes galloping up from behind stopping next to Sgt. Graham. A green with blue tinted scaled individual speaks to Sgt. Graham, "Kethazz here, reporting from Crackenhammer, ssir. I jusst now left hiss office ass he told me to report to you and join the group. Where do you want me?"
Graham looks at you " Well folks looks like your party is complete simple patrol Kethazz were going to meet up with the first outpost in about an hour, we will have lunch and then patrol back to the keep, your companions can fill you in on what I have covered already"
Arthmael nods. "Indeed. These goblins and bandits cannot be allowed to spill blood like this." He has been looking more comfortable since he left the keep's walls, riding along, watching the miles pass by and not saying much. "I have also heard travelers speak of marauding undead in this area. Have you seen them while on patrol?"
It gets dark early as the sun disappears behind the mountaintops the grown noticeably cooler you have reached the first camp 3 soldiers are in camp 2 out on patrol/guard duty. Graham greets them "Hello mike how is it going" reply ""all quiet sir no sightings" Graham then introduces you to the 3 officers Mike connley human fighter, Jason brown, human fighter, and thomas green human fighter.
Kethaz ties up the horse then walks away from it to sit at the edge of the light from the fire. Sitting so that his back is to the fire and stares out into the darkness beyond, legs crossed his eyes closed, tilting his head at any sound he hears from inside the forest for any signs of danger.
Throin dismounts and tied up his horse, then goes over and sits by the fire, removing his boots and rubbing his hands to warm them. As the cool evening sets in, he wraps his gray cloak closer around his form, tall for a dwarf, grimaces through a dark beard, and turns to Graham and Mike. ”A lot of violence on these roads then. Has it always been this dangerous?”
It is about 4:30, Graham looks to Throin and says no things have become worse over the last 2 months and problems seem to be increasing, The Keeps forces are stretched thin at this point so reinforcements have been sent for.
Kethaz is the first to notice a rider in the distance coming fast and behind him a party of 10 goblins giving chase.
