Janter goes to the guards nearby to ask about where they might find merchants themselves, or where they post help wanted notes for mercenaries as guards for their travels.
Gedyr A DurLhuig Walks into the keep, looking specifically for other adventurers and not ready to proceed on his own.

The guards tell that most merchants mostly stop here to rest before heading off in the morning. Merchants are more likely to seek help at the cities like Saltmarsh or Seaton but there have been instances where merchants drop off adventurers here at Burle in exchange for guarding them. The roads have decent traffic, some merchants and some travels going about the road. The guards also tell that the patrols have been telling merchants of how the southern path is dangerous but people still go through that path due to how it is considered a shortcut on most routes. Patrols say that they mostly find the aftermath of the attacks during night. The carriages are ransacked and the people are left alive, but unconscious and looted.

"Perhaps we should head to one of the bigger towns. Or if not, wait here and fill our stomachs whilst we waiting for a merchant in need." Bernard is visibly uncomfortable that this group would be so quick to kill. Bandits groups are often composed of young lads down on their luck who should be judged under the proper officials before being put to death.

"if they haven't been killing then I've no issue with offering them an opportunity to surrender, and I'll even strike to subdue instead of kill, but banditry cannot be tolerated."
He sighs heavily and looks at Bernard, sadness in his eyes. "They made a choice to steal from others, and if they've not killed up until now it may be that their luck is better than they believe it to be. They could have found another way, inside the law." He looks pointedly at the postings on the board.
"Their fingers are worth 10 gold apiece, there's nothing up there that says they can't still be attached to their hands, and those to their bodies. Mayhaps we can offer them some of the bounty to encourage them to come along without a fuss."
"Do not mistake me for a naive common boy, I worked as a law enforcer for decades." Bernard snaps. "I have seen atrocities committed under the guise of legal code by men who do not stop to think about their actions. Yes, banditry is wrong. Yes, they deserve punishment. Who are we to deal judgement on a man's right to live?" His raised voice has caught the attention of a few passersby at this point, and he quickly reins it in when he notices their stares. "All I am saying is that it takes little extra effort on our part to simply knock them out, tie them up, manacle them or persuade them to come quietly. If the castellan decides that death is their lot for breaking the law, then so be it - I respect her decision and will swing the axe myself if she wills it. At least I would be able to sleep at night knowing that I had not made the decision to drive a blade through a man who could have been left penniless and desperate by the powers that be."
Bernard lets out a large sigh and his shoulders sink. "There is nothing left to say on the matter, I have made my concerns plenty clear. I am heading to the nearest tavern to cool off and get some stew. Anybody is welcome to join me." Bernard hefts his pike into his shoulder and heads to the closest drinking establishment.

Elwin watched the pikeman leave with an uncomfortable mixture of irritation and confusion as he did. The other one had agreed that they'd give the miscreants a chance to surrender... what more did the man want?
"If I'd not decided to watch the man before..." he thought to himself, "I'd surely set to it now."
He cleared his throat.
"'Haps he's right, maybe we should go to the city." Perhaps a bit of diplomacy was in order here... but on the chance it flopped, Elwin spoke just loud enough that Bernard wouldn't hear.
"More stuff to buy, more likely to find a merchant, and who knows... maybe even we run across the bandits on the way, if we dress the part?"
If everyone agreed, and no one protested, he'd go get the "law enforcer" himself. They could doubtless use every body they could get, he figured, even if only to be a pincushion for the bandits' blades.
Quodithas nods at Elwin. "I think we're all on the same page, more or less." Quodithas smiles wryly as he turns to follow after Bernard. "A drink would be welcome." He rests his hand casually on the head of his mace as he takes a leisurely pace behind Bernard.
He notices the Elf clad in woodland garb and leather armor, he sees the longbow and stops, bowing slightly before Gedyr. "Blessings of Torm to you neighbor. If you are here seeking work, we're headed towards whatever ale we can find to lubricate our discussion of strategy for catching some bandits operating in the nearby forest. You're welcome to join if you've a mind towards such matters."
When the rest decide to get some ale, Yuno will pull Kosh to the side and and out of earshot. She will say:
@Kosh:
Yuno temporarily drops her innocent shy girl facade and says to the white haired barbarian, with that same louder, more nasally voice but keeping it down to prevent suspicion, "So, what do 'ya think about these guys, Whitey? It seems like they're a bunch of pansies who are too afraid to get blood on their hands. You think I should keep up my innocent town girl act while I kill things this time around? They don't seem like the people who have a good sense of humor (ie not okay with killing)"
"I don't think they'll be amused at all. They do seem like the types to take offense to your... enthusiasm. They may surprise us. They may have the will to do The Work, but I've been disappointed before."
Gedyr bows deeply to Quodithas, "....and the blessing of Solonor to you. Indeed, this is one reason I am here, as well as searching the forest nearby. A group is always better, and I will join if you will have me."
Gedyr bows deeply to Quodithas, "....and the blessing of Solonor to you. Indeed, this is one reason I am here, as well as searching the forest nearby. A group is always better, and I will join if you will have me."
Niossae witnesses the outburst and argument between Bernard and Elwin and decides following them to the inn may be a better place to join a party looking to collect the bounties posted on the notice board. Niossae packs the tome with care into his backpack and follows the arguing people at a respectable distance. Once inside, he'll appraise the occupants and try to figure out who to approach to sell his services.
She says, "Yeah, I should downplay how much fun it is." She puts her hands on her cheeks and looks fake-shocked "Maybe I'll pretend the bandits are trying to grope me! AHAHAHAHAHAHAH!"
She then seems to remember something and says, "You think it'd be too suspicious for me to use both my weapons? (ie dual wielding non-light weapons)"
Quodithas nods at Elwin. "I think we're all on the same page, more or less."
"Alright, finally," thought the warlock. "So then if we're--"
Quodithas smiles wryly as he turns to follow after Bernard. "A drink would be welcome." He rests his hand casually on the head of his mace as he takes a leisurely pace behind Bernard.
Elwin suppressed a groan.
He glanced around. Yuno. Kosh. Janter. Maybe even Gedyr, although he seemed to be thinking of following the others to the tavern. Those seemed to be the ones still left around. Not that Elwin had caught all their names yet, unfortunately. To him, for now, they were The Town Girl, Silver Hair, The Gnome and The Woodland Elf. Introductions could come later.
He looked the lot over again. It seemed a bit light--the girl in particular seemed quite nervous and frail--but maybe this was enough for a group?
It was decided then. Elwin strode up to Janter. "Ey, I liked your idea, but it seems there's no merchants yet. To Saltmarsh then?" He then waved at Gedyr, trying to catch his attention before he ran off. "You there! Join us?!"
He then pointed toward Yuno and Kosh, while addressing Janter (OOC: and Gedyr, assuming he comes over.) "Those two seem eager to get going. I say we just pile in with 'em and start headin' to the city." Elwin smiled. "You's in?"
Once sat in the tavern, Bernard takes a deep gulp from his ale before addressing Quodithas.
"Apologies for my outburst. I have witnessed terrible things on both sides of the law in my years." He sighs and looks out of the window. "Those folk jumping at the chance to end the lives of fellow humans for cash are but a short step from taking up work as marauders or mercenaries. I came to Burle to avoid the loose application of the law, not to enable it; and if these bandits have not killed or maimed then they deserve mercy before being put to trial."

"I require no apologies, friend." Quodithas takes a drink of his ale and gets a far off look in his eyes as he stares into his half-full mug. "I've devoted my life to the greater good in service to Torm, to upholding the laws, to doing what is right." He looks at Bernard, "It's not always an easy path, but it's always been the correct one." He shrugs, "I think there was a simple misunderstanding of methods... We all see different paths to the same end, that doesn't mean we can't find common ground and walk along together."

"Well, I've been hitching rides in carts all day now. Why not take yet another to town?" Janter responds. "let me know when we go and I'll follow along."
While waiting, he copies the list of bounties on the inside of his shield, seemingly carving them into a small section of the wood to not forget what they could be, and save the listed prices of things. There are no wood shavings, though, and the lettering is oddly bunched together seemingly into single lightly glowing lines.
