George sighs heavily and sits down in front of the prisoner:
'You're in a bit of a pickle here aren't you, my friend? I appreciate you wanting to get home to your family, and I understand how you wound up in service to your 'Lord' - given the choice I imagine all of us would do the same. That said, our first concern is for ourselves and the people we're charged with keeping safe. You can understand that can't you?'
'Now, it just so happens that I have some experience in situations like this. Situations exactly like this. So I'm willing to work with you to see if there's a way we can get you back to your Gran and your sister to keep them safe.'
George then spends a good chunk of their time under sail walking their Prisoner [he needs a name I suppose- Roberto?] through the basics of fieldwork. Sketches out a deal where Roberto provides them with a steady stream of intel on how things are developing in Portland, and the Town (a town that remains nameless and unspecified) offers him, his Gran and his sister safe haven at some point in the future - including handling their exfiltration. George talks him through how to use a dead drop, code messages from a paperback book and how to make inconspicuous marks to signal his handlers.
To the group: 'I vote Thomas and I take him back to where we found him. Rough him up a bit and send him back into Portland. I can set up in the forest for a couple of days and make sure he doesn't run right in and rat us out. And honestly, if he does, I'll be the only one in danger. Seems to me, having a regular source of intel in the center of that rat nest is worth the risk....'
“Sounds like a good plan, except I’ll stay with you. Buddy system still works, and we can see what happens and get lost if we need to. “

“Can you tell me the difference between a witch and a wizard?" "Sure, a wizard is what they call you when they want to hire you, and a witch is what they call you when they're getting ready to run you out of town.” SunWolf replied ― Barbara Hambly, The Witches of Wenshar

Max "As I said I don't want to let him go but you seem to know how to handle this sort of thing. However, I think we can afford a couple of days before he is released. If he get's back home late all beat up and hungry it may sell better. Let's get this boat back to town, the professor needs medical attention we can't give him out here on the ocean and the longer we take to get the books back the more chance of something else going tits-up. Finally, this seems to me a decision that needs to be made by the Mayor. If it goes badly then everyone is at risk."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
If no objections you head back to town. When you dock the prisoner is kept blindfolded so that he can't tell where he is until inside. The Mayor interviews him (any of you present?). When you first met her she was quite impressive for a small town mayor/flower shop owner but as time has gone on she now has a more...??fay?? presence to her and when she talks it is very difficult to disagree with her. 18 She sells the guard (Roberto) on becoming an agent of the town, leaving the trade craft details to George. If he and his ever need to flee you (George) arrange a place where they can go to be picked up. Anything else? Thomas and George take him back north and drop him off.

Looking closer at the Mayor (Yes, he'll be present if permitted) Thomas wonders if the return of magic has been mentioned, and if it is having more of an effect on the world and the people than just spells. Investigation of her features changed? 23 During the conversation away from the prisoner, he mentions "Did you know that there is magic back in the world, now? Real magic?" (If needed, he will demonstrate the floating platform.) "Do you have any old books that might have speculative discussions or 'spells'? They may actually be very useful these days."
OOC - Looking for more ritual spells for Thomas' spell book.

Her appearance hasn’t changed but there was a time when the full force of her personality was directed at Roberto that you got the strange feeling that someone/thing was standing behind her lending power to her ‘argument’.
She knows that magic is back “The women in my family, the Merrywicks, have always had the ability to ‘make things happen’. It was never blatant, just things always came out the right way. I’ve noticed it’s stronger now and I can do other things.”
DM In game terms she’s a Warlock (Patron Archfey) with no useful combat abilities but tough as hell in the gladiator pit that is politics. Charisma skills, Luck feat, Charm, speak with animals, disguise. All her abilities are innate so no rituals.
George preps for their infiltration mission. He looks for two sets of identical trade paperbacks - Tom Clancy Novels or something similarly bulky and unlikely to draw attention - and spends a couple of days crafting several portable hunting/tree stands - something like this:

Ooc- not from her specifically, but from the local libraries or hobbyists, etc.

Once you're back from dropping off your spy there'll be two weeks of down time to look for old books. You find Illusory Script. Tell George, his little spy heart will beat pitter-pat.
Uthvern is also there at the meeting and finds what the Mayor says interesting. However, soon after they talk, he goes around to see if anyone needs manual labour that he can help with. Whether it be tilling fields, lifting things, etc. Etc.

In an agrarian economy there's always a shortage of bodies to do work. You find much lifting and carrying to fill your time.
DM Note: This campaign is based on a set of novels that covers 40+ years. The first set of books covers the first eight years after the change. From memory there isn't a named character in the books who doesn't get married and have children. The point of bringing this up is that unlike a normal DnD campaign as time goes on your characters age and retire from the adventuring life and their children take up the mantle.
Uthvern meets Sally Grass who is looking after the horses and helping train the militia in how to ride.
I'm not getting any response to my postings for a new player so it may just be the four of you for some time. If Juliette does retire your party will be completely without healing so it looks like she will be an NPC until the problem is solved some other way.
Eva does retire from special forces work and trains the general populous in martial arts.
The Mayor calls you together “George has wanted to visit the University at Corvallis and now is the time to do it” The professor is there with his crutches “You are going to escort him back home and he will introduce you to the University Chancellor (assuming that there is still a University and Chancellor). It’s a long walk so take horses. If the University is in good shape we can do a skills swap with them plus any other trading opportunities that come to light.”
‘I'm eager to see how the town and University have fared. I also think scouting the National Park between us and them on the way is a good idea - too many places for n’er do Wells to hole up in there.’

Heading out now for errands.

Uthvern has no issues with this, XD and I do think that this'll actually be really interesting as well with how it'll be XD
George:
'Illusory Script indeed! very nice - this will come in handy'
During the downtime, George works with the town Militia, all the kids and anyone else who wants to learn on archery in general.
He also works with the general tinkers guild on replicating the crossbows and the chainmail recovered from Portland.
