For the down time, Thomas will be looking at various magical resources, as few as they may be, to try and determine what exactly constitutes magic now. He also help around as much as possible with his familiar, disks and magic messages, exercising his new talents. Practicing with the crossbow and sword also take a place in his day to day, knowing that their use has become essential to surviving this new world.
On the trip to the University - since he is unable to find a way to sail there - Thomas is reserved. "The parks are perfect places to live in, these days. The game for hunting and the vegetation would encourage anyone with a modicum of survival skills to make a home there. Gamliel will be very useful watching for smoke signs or other signs, and quite inconspicuous. Not necessarily ne'er-do-wells, though. Certainly loners most likely."

“Can you tell me the difference between a witch and a wizard?" "Sure, a wizard is what they call you when they want to hire you, and a witch is what they call you when they're getting ready to run you out of town.” SunWolf replied ― Barbara Hambly, The Witches of Wenshar

One practicing Wiccan witch is ready to be introduced. Specialized in herbal magic (many, many healthy herbal mixture in memory), divination with Tarot cards, sympathetic magic, pretty mean at throwing knives as well. Knows the native flora and fauna very well. Not very sociable and has been living in the forest east of town in the solitude, but has been attracted by all the commotion; you know people stomping around in woods and fields trying to figure out how survival is accomplished in this new and improved world and being a huge disturbance in the ether. Messes up some of his important metaphysical experimentation don't you know. Is at present trying to figure out how to make an introduction without potential suffering and indignities that are inherent in such situations.
The name is Aleister C, he is an ex-navy corpsman who worked extensively with Marine LRRP (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol) but got really fed up with all the military mickey mouse. Discovered he had a natural affinity for wiccan magic after he had an long fling with a couple of witches he met during a wild party just after he chuck the military into the privy pit. Has had very casual contact with the towns folk, he doesn't know much about them and they do not know much about him, only that he is a strange hermit type person that lives in the woods to the east; never seemed to be a source of problems for anyone - rather curmudgeonly to say the least. Trades furs and forest products (wild mushrooms, roots and fruits (in season), etc.) with folks who are interested in such things for staples not found in the woods. Expert with snares and assorted traps, could track a frog across lily pads, at least that's what he boasts when he is feeling talkative. Hates technology, has written a couple of published treatises on medieval siege warfare as he is interested in such machinery that were used in those kinds of endeavors.

Herman passes the time carving figurines in wood (and , if asked, also arrows) while going back to town.
In town he down some beers and he is as good as one can get
On the way to the university he totally agrees with Thomas about the parks
I would have gone as a loner myself if I wouldn't be intrigued to understand what the heck is going on. Anyway this damn Mayor is bossy: find that, go there, rescue those...I mean, it looks everything has changed but also not: we are being dragged and pulled from someone else...

Welcome stranger. Looking at your description it's as if you where built for this strange new world.JYou present yourself at a guard post and as you have lived in the area for years they already know you as 'that crazy hermit'. The Mayor is happy that you have come in from the cold as your skill set is exactly what they need.
Herman passes the time carving figurines in wood (and , if asked, also arrows) while going back to town.

Max "Herman my friend, there are two types of people in this new world. Those that join together one way or another or corpses. The Mayor may be bossy but without someone to grab all those people and get them moving in the right direction we could very easily have all been dead by now or worse... eaters. Most people had no idea where food came from in the old world. You could probably survive by yourself in the wilderness but that's all it would be, survival. And then one day you'd get a toothache or an infected scratch or slip and break a leg."
While he was TOUCHING WOOD (carving, actually) Max said BREAK A LEG.
Herman sees it as an omen of good fortune and so gave hima little smile under the moustaches (apart from the fact that he doesn't know what the word "omen" means)
Aleister C is a rather stoutly built fellow, he is by no means fat, more fire-plugish; nary a hair on his head; light grey eyes that are a bit discerning as there are no eyebrows or lashes to go with them; weathered and tanned skin, as one would expect from an outdoorsman; walks a bit like a cat, a big one; his baritone voice is a bit hoarse, but he speaks clearly when he does talk, displaying strong and straight white teeth.
He wears what are obviously hand-made leather garments, boots. pants, belt, two pouches and coat, only his shirt is cloth, wool by the look of it and hand sew as well. When he walked into town he had a backpack, a long heavy knife and a stout wooden staff about six-and-a-half feet long.
"Howdy Mayor, bit of a ruckus going on around, huh! I notice there was a lot o folk stompin' around in the forest disturbin' the natural flow of things so, thought I'd better come inta town and find out what all the fuss was about."

DM: I’ve looked at your character and it needs some adjustment. Ability scores should be standard array. As you are joining the special forces squad you get ‘Tactical Combat Armour’. High tech composite armour the group found on their adventures. All spell casting is ritual but that does not mean you have to take ritual spells, just spells with a duration of 10 minutes or longer. Cure spells are a special case, their casting time is one hour per level. That being said I have no issues with Druidcraft and Mending. They have the correct flavour for the game.
All spells are cast as rituals and have a casting time of 1 minute per level or longer. There is no magic that does direct damage in combat.
Back in game. The mayor welcomes you and gives the quick explainer “Didn’t you notice the plane falling from the sky?”
Also, I was wondering what you thought of temporary enhancements ala 'The Witcher' using elixirs and so forth? For example, using a tincture of Belladonna and Deadly Nightshade applied to the soles of the feet would allow witches to fly and while that would not be of the correct flavor for this game, having such concoctions do things like temporarily enhance night vision or hearing or sense of smell. There a other mixtures for increasing adrenaline, psychotropics for 'dream walking', and etcetera; much exploring to do on this topic.
Aleister shakes his head at the Mayor, "Naw, musta been looking the other way, didn't even hear anything crash. No survivors I s'ppose?"
I do not know what is meant by 'standard array', would you please enlighten me.
Edit your character and go to ‘Ability Scores’. There’s an option at the top of the page which I’ve changed to ‘Standard Array’. Spread the numbers 15, 14, 13, 12, 10 and 8 among your stats.
After the Mayor explains a bit more of what is going on, Aleister shakes his head, "What has the world come to?" Then he grins broadly. "This sounds fun, dangerous, but fun for all that. And it certainly seems as though there'll be patching up to do when things go awry. What sort of medical equipment and supplies does the town have? I have some useful things in my head and back thata-way," he waves in a generally eastward direction. "Might take a few days to get things organized and brought back here. I'd like to put together a field medical kit and it'd be nice to have more than just a bunch of herbs and things in it. I mean I can't find clamps and scalpels out in the woods.
"You say gunpowder and steam don't work, huh? But springs do, car leaf springs would make fine weapons, twisted rope for torsion catapults, pitch and tar from those tar seeps in the woods mixed with various odds and ends would make dandy incendiary devices. Mmmm, chains and ball bearings, yeah we could work up some very interesting things. So what is the plan for the next couple of steps?"

George cuts in: ‘In the short run, the plan is to head over to Corvallis and see how they’ve fared. We’ll scout the National Forest along the way.’
‘I’ve got an extra Ghillie Cloak (advantage on stealth) for you. We’re packing up the horses now - grab your gear - we’ll head our tomorrow at first light.’
Your new member has healing skills so Juliette does retire from special forces and in the mean time will work in town. After time has passed and the world has calmed down she thinks that being a wandering minstrel is an excellent way to collect intelligence.
Your group gets their gear and horses. Now here is a question that needs answering. That tactical armour is extremely important to your survival but you couldn't attract more attention wearing it than if you had a marching band with you. It will attract the attention of EVERYONE who sees it. You have chain shirts, leather armour and a couple of chain armour for Max and Uthvern. Do you want to keep the high tech armour in your packs until needed?
George looks long and hard at their lovely Tactical Armor. The lovely, unique and incredibly valuable armor. Armor that just screams 'Look at us! Remember us!' and wonders what to do about it.
'Well, team seems we have a dilemma - our armor is amazing, but it's so distinctive it might draw unwanted attention. And we might want to keep that capability close to the vest - especially since the goal of this visit is to figure out what's going on in Corvallis - not necessarily fight our way in and out.'
'My vote is we shift into more 'normal' gear for this trip - or as normal as anyone can look wearing chain mail and carrying a sword - and we pack the tac armor in case shit goes seriously sideways. And if we're going to do that, I vote we really do it right and make ourselves some spears and matching designs on our shields - you know, embrace the new aesthetic.'
