You have a motorist association (whatever that's called in America) map of the Portland area. The Doc marks where his home is, it's in a small town to the west of Portland called Cherry Grove.
The wonders of using the real world for your game. You'll need to keep away from towns and there will be a lot of refugees from Portland who after three weeks will kill you and eat your horses.
His books are kept in a fireproof safe in his basement; they where rare and valuable before the change. He gives you the combination.
Uthvern nods, "With the troubles we might face, we are going to have to fight for multiple things crew. Our survival, the books, and our horses. Are you guys ready to strike down others for the sake of our survival?" He looks around at the group in a questioning manner.
”I’d stay along the coast: there are less big cities, few woods where to hide (as far as I can see) , no hills to cross and fish if we want. It is usually easier to track water, since we see rivers passsing by. Also, I am corious how this pacific city ended up”
'I''d like to swing by the Big Elk Campground - isn't that where those prisoners ran off to? It would be nice to make sure that hornet's nest is good and stomped out. I also think our chance of finding some game along the way is going to be better if we use the forest route. Corvallis worries me - but the University there might have some interesting folks with interesting skills. Would be good to set up a trade route with them' if we can'
Down at the docks, a sail-tattered catamaran limps towards the harbour. A single, young sailor slowly guides it's abused hull into the cove, and he calls out to the first person he sees "Hey, can I get a slip? I've gone about as far as I possibly can, and my radio's out. I just need a repair tech and new sails, so a couple of hours, max, I promise!" Once allowed, he guides the ship to the indicated dock and ties it up. Taking a few minutes to gather up a backpack of stuff, he asks "Is there a marine electronics tech around today?"

“Can you tell me the difference between a witch and a wizard?" "Sure, a wizard is what they call you when they want to hire you, and a witch is what they call you when they're getting ready to run you out of town.” SunWolf replied ― Barbara Hambly, The Witches of Wenshar
This town looks very odd. There are no cars moving and people are walking around with swords and shields and bows. There's a young woman in a nearby park giving martial arts training with a group of people.
George heads to the Dock with Max and the Sheriff as part of an 'official' welcoming committee.
'Ho there stranger - how long have you been at sea? You seem to have missed the recent news"
George then goes on to explain 'The Change' and the encounter with the prisoners in the neighboring town.
'So friend, the real question is what can you offer the town to buy you a share of our dwindling food reserves? Hate to be so blunt, but that's about what it comes down to...'
On your trip for the books Herman wants to go up the coast and George wants to go via Corvallis. The simple answer is go one way on the way out and the other way on the way back.
Looking at the unusual accessories of the people and observing the complete lack of power or electronics (including the normally ever present smart phones), Tom is a bit unnerved. At the greeting dockside, he hears out the explanation and asks, eyes wide “How is that possible?! An EMP would explain electronics, but guns not working, basic physics would have to change! I’ve been 3 weeks making my way to shore from when my electronics and motor died and navigating by the sun and stars was a challenge. As far as negotiable stuff, I’ve a lot of gear on my boat, as well as some cash. What would I need to provide to buy my way in?”

The Sheriff looks him up and down "Any useful skills? Other than that your boat itself could be very useful to the town. It's one of the few sail powered boats we have, most of the others have motors and are pretty useless until we can fit them out with sails. We need to start fishing."
Startled at the suggestion, Thomas responds with a slight squeak - "My..my boat?!? I can't sail without my boat! I've had her for YEARS! She's my friend, my support, my home! How can you ask me to just give her away? I can do the fishing, the sailing, the navigating for your fishers, but let me keep my boat! I've got two 18lb propane canisters. two jerry cans of marine, ummm, about 3 weeks of canned goods, a solar water distiller, let me think...I'm a good general repair person, some electronics... never mind. Just don't take my boat!" visibly panicked, the nondescript young man, brown hair still frazzled from his time at sea, tried to come up with something the Sheriff finds acceptable in substitute.

George - ''Listen, friend things have changed in ways that haven't clicked for you yet - and I get that is going to take some time to settle in - but here's the thing. You really don't have a lot of choices here. You've got 3 weeks of food. That's it. Once it's out you're out. Your boat is an incredible asset for this town - one that we'd be hard-pressed to let slip out of our hands.'
George fixes the young man with a hard stare to make sure the message and implicit threat were received
'I do have a proposition - a group of us are headed out on a bit of an errand and we could use an extra hand or two. Why don't you join us, and if you prove useful the Town could let you keep your boat if you promise to use it to help keep the town going. It'll really come down to what the Council decides - but I'm guessing this is the best offer you're gonna get.'

The Mayor joins the discussion “You said that you needed new sails and some other work. You go on the expedition that George mentioned and while you’re gone we’ll replace your sails and use the boat for fishing. That seems like a fair trade. Once you get back, if you want to move on then fine.”

I’m not sure if this is the right places.
Is this the discussion for the Dies fire group?
