'We are looking for folks who are working to keep things together - and it looks like you all fit that bill. We don't have much extra, but we're happy to trade what we can. You all have anything you can offer? Skilled hands are valuable too - Aleister here has some medical skills and we have a full doctor back in town. We also have some skilled craftsman who can fashion functional armor - an improvement on what your guards have now.'
Uthvern nods, "As well as trainers for different fighting styles. I could teach a brawling kind of hand to hand, some others we have could teach martial arts, another sword and shield."
Aleister asks about anybody in town that has a penchant for mechanical tinkering; maybe a local machine shop owner/employee, if indeed there are any such shops around. He will confab with them about making catapults from car leaf springs, trebuchets and other types of projectile machines that are fairly simple to make; sketching out how to make lathes, drill, saws, etc. using a stationary exercise bike (or a regular one), wire and stone gabions, cheval de frise, and other quickly made defensive sorts of stuff. As well he will locate the best medical folk and show them various helpful plants and how to prepare them.
Telling everyone he talks to, "We want you to survive, because folks who are willing to work together, rather than being forced to, need to stick together. This be a whole different world we've found ourselves in."

Assuming you are talking to the comptroller not his assistant - "It's a fair bet your town doesn't have a hospital, we have a small one here. Of course all the tech stuff doesn't work but it is still set up for surgeries and looking after badly wounded people. Is access to the something you'd be interested in? We have a large garden supply store that had lots of seeds and plants; all sorts of vegetables and spices. A couple of auto parts and tire stores. I'm sure there's a use for all that rubber. A huge RV and caravan dealership
I hear your going on to Corvallis and the University, can we send a couple of our people with you?"
Uthvern nods, "As well as trainers for different fighting styles. I could teach a brawling kind of hand to hand, some others we have could teach martial arts, another sword and shield."
"We have a few people with military experience but nothing of the medieval sort. Training would be great. My boy has read a million books on the subject but there's a difference between book learning and experience."

You are referred to the Berry's, a married couple who own the local hardware and machining business. "Outside my expertise, they're looking after that stuff."
Ooc: Out of the blue I am thinking : what about hot air balloon?
"There is (was) a place in Salem that did hot air balloons, me and the Missus took a ride there on our wedding anniversary a few years back. It might be worth a look."
’Access to the hospital would be of absolute value to us in the long term - seems like that’s a solid trade for access to archery and martial training for some of your guards. In the short run I’m sure we could work out a swap for some seeds - a diet of fish and potatoes will keep you alive but isn’t very interesting.’
As he says this, George pulls out a couple samples canned herring and potatoes and puts them in front of the Comptroller.
‘As for having folks accompany us, wed be happy to have them join us - assuming of course they can handle themselves and keep up. We’re moving fast and things can get better rough out there’
Aleister will let the folks in his party know he's going to find the Berry's and talk shop with them; after all it does seem as we'll be here for a bit. When he gets to the hardware/machine shop he will introduce himself to the Berry's. Top of the list is how to hook up rotary machines, drills, lathes, saws of various type, and etcetera to human power using things like stationary exercise bikes and even regular bikes. Also he will brainstorm with them on how to set up a drop forge using the same principles. He will inquire after hand tools such as braces and bits, files and saws and other things they might have available; plaster, for making molds to cast lead shapes, compression springs maybe, extension springs, aluminum tubing, solder and iron (the old fashion kind), wire, nails. He would love to browse their stuff for anything that catches his eye.
"In principle I want to make some prototype devices that, if they work out, will improve everyone's ability to protect themselves, you and yours, me and mine. If your town and mine, along with the folks in Corvalis, can help each other, we will all have a better chance at keeping out of the clutches of the Protectorate. That would be good don't you think?"

Panic is a mechanism that strengthens the gene pool.
Getting rather bored as time passes with no trouble signals, Thomas asks Gamliel to watch the town and alert him in anything happens. He then reads more of his Book of Abraham the mage, seeing if it has any other interesting spells to try.

“Can you tell me the difference between a witch and a wizard?" "Sure, a wizard is what they call you when they want to hire you, and a witch is what they call you when they're getting ready to run you out of town.” SunWolf replied ― Barbara Hambly, The Witches of Wenshar

Les the DM is way out of his depth with all this technical talk. The party will spend the night and leave the next day. You seem to know what your talking about, so do they. Bypassing all the jargon what do you want to build? Pictures would be nice.

Any other spells in the book are too complicate for you until you get to 3rd level.
I'm going out soonish to run a bunch of errands and will be back this afternoon. At that time you will be heading out to Corvallis, are there any more preparations you wish to make?
You lot are very unperceptive.
😂😂😂 some shitty ass rolls X'D
Well shucks, Aleister will try a bit of perception and insight 12 and 20, trying of course to get a good read on the people and town.
"What news do you have about Salem?" he'll ask Mary.
"How are you all set on the medical front? Any problems, injuries, illnesses we might be able to help with?"
Panic is a mechanism that strengthens the gene pool.
Her news about Salem is the same as you’ve already heard. Your perception is that the town is working hard to dig itself out of this mess.
