"That be a nice toss there Salty... Couldn't see much of it but I heard a thud without any shouting, and that's usually a good sign." Turning to Tarin, Raldaen adds "Dogs are usually guarding somat. Be a might fishy if they were just penned up there to guard against the likes of us, and no-one paid heed to all the barkin' and a clammerin' that they be causin'."
Raldaen enters the 'kennels' and takes a look around as best he can. Looking at how the dogs are chained up and whether there is anything else special about the room. "Be a crying shame that I only gots travel rations on me... a juicy bacon joint would probably keep these beasties occupied." Pausing a moment, Raldaen sneers wickedly as he suggests, "I don't suppose they like fresh goblin meat?"
Bankur glances at Raldaen and gags noticeably. "Friend Raldaen, there is no such thing as "fresh" goblin meat. They are rotten little creatures. If they smell half as bad on the inside as they do on the outside... oy. I can't even..." Bankur gags once more before composing himself.
Turning to the corridor and squinting to try to make out anything in the darkness, Bankur says "Do you think everything has gone as planned? I heard noises of battle as well but I'm concerned nobody has come back to report as of yet."
"Well, Cahoots and Penumbra didn't immediately see anything in the room with the wolves. Maybe it's safe to light a torch and help guide our fellow companions in? I don't want to leave them malingering outside." He looks back at the entrance of the cave and trots back over. "Salty and Penumbra did it! The goblin that was on the bridge is down."
"Oh! I think I can help with that." He tears off a ration chunk and cups his hands over it for a moment, suffusing the stale but travel-hardy food with warmth and flavor (at least, what Tarin imagines to be tasty to wolves), then hands it back to Raldaen.
(OOC: Tarin casts prestidigitation: "You chill, warm, or flavor up to 1 cubic foot of nonliving material for 1 hour.")
Raldaen takes the ration from Tarin and lifts it to his nose, a quick sniff and he gives it a quick lick with his tongue. "Well, if I had known you could do that I'd have been handing you my rations days ago!" smiling at Bankur as he nods his approval, Raldaen adds, "I share yer fondness for the green piss-buckets but there's no accounting for the taste o' beasts... I seen sharks gobble them up as quick as a man before now. An dem sharks have a keen sense o' smell so I reckon they'd know to avoid the snotty lil flesh-turds if they tasted that bad."
Raldaen wanders towards the wolves, trying to calm them, but holding the ration out in front of him, hoping they catch the scent of it rather than him. Once he is a few feet away from the closest hound, he attempts to entice it with the ration, moving to one side and seeing if the wolf follows, hoping to gain it's attention and a smattering of 'not having his hand bitten off'.
If the wolf follows, then Raldaen gestures to Tarin to replicate the feat and tries to gather the wolves on one side of the room. Freeing up the other for investigation.
Tarin giggles with barely suppressed amusement as Raldaen takes a lick of wolf food, but clears his throat and regains his composure after a moment to carry out his compatriot's plan.
Penumbra sneaks up to the entrance of the area with the wolves. She keeps her bow trained on the wolf nearest to Raldaen ready to strike if the creature moves to attack her friend.
Stealth: 22
Attack if needed: Attack: 24 Damage: 7(rolled with advantage for sneak attack assuming she succeeds on her stealth check)
Raldean is able to entice the wolves with the doctored ration, and they leave him alone to explore the cave. Tarin follows suit, offering some dried meat to another wolf. (Animal Handling: 18)
(OOC: Anyone else trying to enter the room can also try to calm the wolves (roll Animal Handling), or try to dodge past them.)
((@ Rhanloi - is there anything else of note beyond the chained wolves that we can see?))
((Anyone want to roll some investigation, as I'm gonna RP it as being better for Raldaen to keep a focus on the wolves rather than turn his back on them.))
Once the wolves are secured Tarin looks around the room before inviting everyone else in. "It won't do to overwhelm these poor, mistreated creatures. Let's see if there's anything of note in here."
(OOC: Tarin examines the stone and surroundings: 14. Are the wolves guarding something or is this merely their kennel?)
The iron rods holding the wolves in place are driven into the base of a stalagmite, but Tarin estimates that a couple of good, strong tugs could pull them loose. Best not to antagonize the wolves, then! A narrow opening in the east wall leads to a natural chimney that climbs up at least 20 feet. At the base of the fissure is rubbish that looks like it was discarded through the opening above. There is nothing else of interest here - just some matted down straw and some gnawed bones. It is pretty dark back here, though. The humans and genasi will need a light source to go anywhere past this kennel-cave.
"I think it's safe enough to have a light for the moment. No reason to keep you all outside dallying! Just don't get too close to these poor canines." Tarin makes a lifting gesture with his palm, and gets the faraway look in his eyes that is a telltale sign of him exchanging telepathy with Cahoots. He carefully listens with Cahoots at the chimney to see if there's anything up there, or if it might lead back outside. "I'm just going to give this a closer look..."
(OOC: Does the chimney lead through the ceiling of the cave into the open sky, or just vertically up to a different level? Is it wide enough to climb?)
Bankur holds his position at the mouth of the wolf cave, ready for action if those in the cave need him. At the same time he keeps a close eye on the areas behind and ahead of the cave to make sure nothing is sneaking up on the group.
Rand stares into the darkness, envious of others who can see better than he in the dark. Glad to hear that the goblin is no longer a threat, he moves forward as far as the wolf den, and waits for those with keener eyes to investigate. He draws a torch from his pack and prepares to light it, which he will do when the party is ready to move forward.
"Nice work on that goblin. I wish I could shoot like that in the dark!"
The chimney is wide enough for the group to climb through one at a time. The chimney leads upwards about 30 feet into another cavern. Sacks and crates of looted provisions are piled up in the south end of this large cave. To the west, the floor slopes toward a narrow opening that descends into darkness. A larger opening leads north down a set of natural stone steps, the roar of falling water echoing from beyond. In the middle of the cavern, the coals of a large fire smolder. Inside the cavern are two goblins, a wolf, and a bugbear. (OOC: Give me a stealth check for Cahoots, then go ahead and take whatever action you want with this information since I will assume that your familiar will return to you once it sees the goblins and bugbear...)
Let me know specifically what you all want to do - direction to travel, marching order if different than what we designated earlier, any actions you are taking while you go, etc.
Penumbra is wary of the wolves, she has never seen "dogs" like these before. She remains hidden at the entrance to the wolf cavern keeping an arrow ready incase the wolves decide to attack.
Tarin gasps as the sensory connection links up and whispers back to the rest of the group. "There's a bugbear, a wolf, and two more of the goblins up higher in these caves. I don't think we can get the drop on them from the chimney here because we could only fit one at a time, unfortunately. But forewarned is forearmed, yes?"

Cahoots flaps up the chimney and looks up over the lip of the edge at the scene, carefully peeking (16).

"Lets move deeper into the caves and see if we can find our benefactors...or their bodies."

Tarin nods, wincing. "Hopefully the former and not the latter, with any luck."
