When Tarin mentions the Redbrands Penumbra looks up from her tea and says "I have heard of them as well, a boy in town apparently stumbled upon what sounds like a hidden entrance to a hideout somewhere in the woods. I think I will try to learn more about these Redbrands tomorrow. If I can find a member of the group I may be able to convince them that I'm looking to join, if they believe me I might be able to find out some names or something about their operation. But first I think I will try to talk to the boy and see if he can point me towards that hidden entrance. I would also be interested in meeting this person you speak of, Tarin. I can only think of two reasons the Redbrands would avoid them, either the person in question is somehow connected to the Redbrands, or the Redbrands are afraid of this person. I'd like to go with when you meet this person Tarin. But for now I think it's time for me to get some rest." After finishing her tea she heads off to her room, she doesn't offer to share her room.
"Arrr, little bully groups round town be like press-gangs in ports. 'Em folks you want t' be givin' a wiiiiiide berth to. If there be a person like this in town, they be worth a word in the ear and a mug in their hand." So saying, Raldaen drains the remains of his second ale, smacking his lips together afterwards in an exaggerated manner. "That be a right refreshing brew, but I might so seeking somethin' a little stronger to see the night out. Any o' yer land rats be wantin another, or be yer all claimin' yer bunks?"
(OoC - Raldaen will carry on drinking with any of the party into the early hours of the morning, as late as the bar staff will allow before they need to 'politely encourage' him to find a bunk or the stables. If everyone else heads to bed, Raldaen will carry on drinking with the entire bar until the same time, or his coins run out!
@Keneux - are you going to try and wrangle us some free accommodation for your performances?)
Eventually, the Inn 'encourages' everyone to find their beds for the night, and the place quiets down. Salty Joe actually accumulates a credit at the bar from appreciative townsfolk wanting to buy him a drink for his music. (Give me a Performance check =)
Raldaen picks up one more piece of info late into the night...the Redbrands frequent the Sleeping Giant tap house at the east end of town - and that the ruffians are trouble! (Go ahead and subtract your expenses. Going forward we'll just use the "Lifestyle Expenses" chart from the Player's Handbook (pg 157) for a daily cost - includes food, drink, lodging, and all other necessities. =)
The next morning the group takes the cart of mining supplies and goods to Barthen's Provisions. Barthen’s is the biggest trading post in Phandalin. Its shelves stock most ordinary goods and supplies, including backpacks, bedrolls, rope, and rations. The place is open from sunup to sundown. The proprietor is Elmar Barthen, a lean and balding human male shopkeeper of fifty years with a kindly manner. “Well met, travelers. What can old Elmar do for you today?”
When you deliver the wagon of supplies Barthen pays the agreed amount (10 gp to each of you)and calls his two young clerks to come and take possession of the wagon and its supplies.
"So, I think we should talk to that Luck Priestess and see if we ran into the same kind of trouble on the road. Maybe she has an idea of where this Cragmaw Castle is located."
(OOC: Rand, in the morning as the party gathers) "So, everyone, the plot thickens. Last night, as we were going to our rooms, Trilena pulled me aside. I think she felt sorry for me after seeing my, umm, never mind. For some reason she thought she should give me advice about women. She said that women don't need some big muscled adventurer that comes and goes, but that they need a man who can provide for them and care for them, like her husband running a respectable inn."
At this point in the story, he can almost feel Raldaen's eyes roll in the back of his head, and moves on.
"Terrible advice, I know, but, here's where it gets interesting. She tried to make her point by telling me about Thel Dendrar, a local woodcarver. Apparently he stood up to those Redbrands you've been talking about. It was about a tenday ago when they came by his shop and leered at his wife. The ruffians murdered him and several townsfolk even saw it happen. The Redbrands grabbed his body, and now his wife, daughter, and son have gone missing too. 'See, nothing good comes from playing the hero,' Trilena said.”
"I knew we would want to check this out, so I asked her where the woodworker lived. He lived across the street from the Townmaster's Hall and the Lionshield Coster."
"I know I almost died back there in those caves, but I am dedicating my life to fighting for people who can't defend themselves. I spent a great deal of time in prayer last night, asking for some divine aid. The gods have never really answered me before, but this time was different. I fell asleep praying, and dreamed that Garl Glittergold himself came and spoke to me, and granted me a boon. I feel much more prepared today than I did yesterday!"
"So, I would really like to go check out this woodcarver's house. I feel like it's something we are supposed to do."
(OoC - In response to Rand's morning revelation) Raldaen is already up when the others come downstairs in teh morning, bleary eyed and still with a faint reek of booze on him, though he seems as coherent as he was on the road and sober. "Boy, yer be needin t' get yer head straight as it comes to the lady folk. I ain't ne'er been the prettiest o' fellas but they look after yer right good when yer shows 'em the right coin. Or they slaps yer hard enough fer yer teeth to need stickin' back in." The pirate ends with a devilish chuckle, before addressing the rest of the group. "So we gots ourselves a few choices after we been and got our pay. I be keen to make me way south as soon as a good opportunity arises but there looks t' be a few jobs round this here lil town that could use some savvy mates t' be fixin' them." Running through his colleagues' chatter from the night before, trying to put together a bigger picture about Phandalin his companions can see his mind still going as he starts to speak.
"We gots these 'Redbrands', that be none too popular; Rand, Penumbra and Tarin all heard gossip to them ends. Bankur and I caught tales of troubles out of the road. Salty seemed t' be twistin' that barmaid round his little finge after she heard 'is dulcet tones, but I dunno if she did more than whisper sweet nothin's to 'im." He glances between Rand and Salty, seeing if there was any enmity between the two over the young lass before continuing, "I be wantin' t' pay these Redbrands a bit o me time at the Sleepin' Giant, an sounds like Rand be set t'wards them ends too. Salty, if'n yer wants to find the sister, I'd reckon Bankur would be more than happy to look at her wounds whilst yer be lookin' into her tale?"
Raldaen will keep his eyes open as they wander to Barthen's for anyone that might look like they are causing a fuss.
(OoC - Over at Barthen's provisions) Raldaen counts his coins after delivering the goods to Elmar. "Be a pleasure doin' business with yer Elmar, though 't weren't easiest of journeys here. We got waylaid by some of 'em puke stains that call 'emselves Goblins... Followed 'em back to their camp though an put an end t' their shaggy carpet of a boss I did. Left some supplies there though..." Raldaen explans about the crates left in the cave that they encountered Klarg in, and how they couldn't shift them. He enquires as to whether Elmar knows anything about the symbol, or could help to retrieve the supplies, for fair price. "An one more thing, know yer much about thesee 'ere Redbrand folk? We been hearin' some bad stories about 'em round town."
"I think its best we find that missing family. People suffering for no good reason makes my berries itch."
He gathers his coin, "Be the blade the weak need my Dad used to say but if we are going to risk our lives and take on a bunch of dudes I suggest we also seek a way to make this profitable too"
Bankur nods, agreeing with the group sentiment "I agree my friends. Evil comes in many forms and it sounds like we have found yet another in these Redbrands. We should have words with them about the well being of the missing family as soon as possible, I think."
((OOC: sorry about the lack of contribution to the discussion - I'm incredibly busy today and this will be my only chance to post))
"If these Redbrands are murderers and are known to harass women, then my plan of trying to infiltrate them doesn't seem like a good idea anymore. I think we should try to talk to the boy who said he found a secret entrance to the Redbrands hideout. I was told his name is Carp and he lives on Alderleaf Farm. For now though I will go with Rand to check out the Woodcarver's house, if his family is still alive we must find them as soon as possible. Penumbra says, clearly unsettled by the story of the woodcarver's fate and dissapearence of his family.
(Salty Joe earned 3 silver worth of drinks, so everyone’s bar tab was paid by your friendly bard!)
It's a cool morning, with clear, blue skies promising a warm day ahead. Once the wagon is secured, Barthen says “The two other Rockseeker brothers, Nundro and Tharden, are camped somewhere outside town. I hain’t seen them in a tenday, but expects them to return any day now to resupply. They’ll be glad for this, by the gods! And what about Gundren? Didn’t he come with you?”
In response to Raldaen’s questions, the merchant replies, “Supplies with a blue lion and a shield, you say? Must belong to the Lionshield Coster. There is a shop in town for the merchant company based in the city of Yartar, over a hundred miles to the east. The Coster ships finished goods to Phandalin and other small settlements throughout the region. You should talk to the master of Phandlin’s shop, a sharp-tongued woman by the name of Linene Graywind.”
“As for them Redbrands, they are making it hard on everyone, shaking down local businesses and flouting the townmaster’s authority. I wish someone would do something about them…”
(So, you have some interconnected options: 1) Go straight to the Redbrands’ hangout, the Sleeping Giant taphouse; 2) Visit Carp and investigate the ‘secret tunnel’ he found; 3) Visit Linene Graywind, whom the Redbrands seem to be afraid of; 4) Visit the woodcarver’s house to see if there are any clues; or 5) Visit Sister Garaele to check up on her. Please give me your character’s intended course of action, and if you are want to stick together or split into two groups. Thanks!)
(Penumbra is nervous about going it alone since she heard about the Redbrands leering at then apparently kidnapping a woman so she will be sticking close to at least one other person. She is also very concerned about the woman and her children so she wants to gather any clues and talk to Carp to see about the tunnel. These are her main concerns at this point, but she would also like to meet Linene Graywind before taking any action against the Redbrands incase the woman can help in any way. She will go with Rand and whoever else wants to investigate the woodcarver's house to start. If everyone wants to stick together she will go with for the other things as well, but will be impatient about doing anything that she dosen't think will help with rescuing the woman and her children.)
(Tarin is nervous about splitting up the party after what nearly happened in the goblin caves. He goes with whichever group is largest but otherwise shares Penumbra's concerns. He also wants to understand what happened to Iarno from Sildar — can't pass up the opportunity to professionally network with fellow wizards!)
(Raldaen wants to sort out the supplies first, if there is a reward he would rather have that in his pocket than someone else's, plus he wants to see why Linene is free of 'Redbranding'. After that, he'll go stow most of his gold in his pack at the inn, and get a top up of the stringest drink available at Stonehill's whilst the others go investigate the woodcarvers hut and Carp.)
"Bad news I be sorry t' say. Gundren was taken off the road by some pus bags, 'im an Sildar, if'n yer knows 'em both? We were able t' rescue Sildar from that bunch we found but they had taken Gundren up to some Kragmaw Castle."Raldaen thanks the merchant for his information and of course, payment. He heads out of the shop with promises to stop back if he needs 'a thing ot two' before leaving Phandalin.
To the party, as he hakes his way towards the Lionsheild Cloister's building, Raldaen says "After this stop, I be needin' me flask topped up, if yers be goin to that there dead Thel's place, then I will head t' the inn an leave yer to it."
Barthen is saddened by the news of Gundren's abduction. "Gundren's a friend of mine - if ya get a chance would you mind lookin' for him and perhaps rescuing the lump? He got me all excited with his talk of discovering the lost mine of the Phandelver’s Pact in the nearby hills. Would hate to see it lost again!"
The group follows Raldaen to the Lionshield Coster to talk about the crates and barrels and sacks of goods stashed in the goblin cave. Hanging above the door to this modest trading post is a wooden sign with the same design as on the crates - a blue lion with a shield. Inside you see many common goods useful in a farming and mining town on the edge of the wilderness. In a back room you can see various armors and shields on display, presumably for sale. A human woman looks up from an open ledger when you enter. "Well, well. Newbs! Welcome to the Lionshield. What can I get for you?"
(Prices for armors and shields are the same as in the PHB, so the shield for Salty Joe costs 10 gp.)
Penumbra lets the other members of the group do the talking here, as they do so she looks over the goods for sale. She stops in front of the armor and notices some studded leather. It catches her eye because the leather was clearly dyed by an amateur, it was apparently intended to be black but instead ended up mostly a very dark grey mottled with spots of slightly lighter grey and hints of the natural brown. Though the armor is inexpertly dyed it is constructed as well as any other piece on the shelf. She smiles when she sees it and remembers some advice she was given a long time ago.
"Do not be darker than the shadows in which you hide, black may look good but is only invisible when it is too dark to see anything at all. The night is not black, no my dear, it is shades of grey."
Penumbra counts out 45 gold pieces from her coin purse and pays the woman for the armor.
When Tarin mentions the Redbrands Penumbra looks up from her tea and says "I have heard of them as well, a boy in town apparently stumbled upon what sounds like a hidden entrance to a hideout somewhere in the woods.
