The bottom of the crevasse feels unnaturally cold. Currently heaped at the bottom among broken and well-gnawed bones is the half-eaten body of Thel Dendrar, the woodcarver of Phandalin who was murdered by the Redbrands. The outlaws left his corpse here for the nothic to feed on.
The nothic keeps its hoard in a battered wooden chest hidden in a cubbyhole at the bottom of the crevasse, under the north bridge. The chest can’t be seen from the edge of the crevasse, but is obvious to any character who descends into the fissure. The chest contains 160 sp, 120 gp, five malachite gems (15 gp each), two potions of healing, and a scroll of augury.
The chest also holds a +1 longswordin a silver-chased scabbard. The sword is inscribed with the name “Talon,” and its hilt is worked in the shape of a bird of prey with outspread wings.
You recall that this sword once belonged to a great knight named Aldith Tresendar, known as the Black Hawk. Sir Aldith died fighting off the orcs that attacked through the hidden caverns below his manor.
Penumbra takes the money, gems, potions, and scroll and puts them in her pack, she carries the sword back up to the top where the rest of the party waits. "It looks like that thing had an eye for shiny things. It had a chest hidden with this sword, some money, a scroll, and some potions. I think I'll hold on to one of these potions, but someone else should hold on to this other one, and I'm no good with a weapon like this one, but it looks like a nice blade." She says holding the elixir out towards her friends. "There is corpse down there as well, looks like it could be the woodcarver."
Seeing Penumbra's discomfort after the battle with the Nothic, Bankur places a hand on her shoulder and says "Be at peace friend, that foul creature can't hurt us anymore, and whatever bad memories he dug up are just those; bad memories. We should all let the past lie where it belongs. Behind us."
Once Penumbra returns from the crevasse Bankur nods at her assessment. "I shall return shortly friends." He then heads down the crevasse and kneels down next to the corpse of the woodcarver. Taking out his holy symbol he says a prayer over the corpse, then covers it with a blanket from his pack. Looking downcast he climbs back up out of the crevasse. "We should retrieve Thel's body on the way out and return it to his family, if at all possible. Thel is beyond our succor, but perhaps a proper burial can ease some of his family's suffering."
"I believe Rand should take the potion, if he doesn't already have one. His being on the front line puts him in the greatest need for it."After glancing at the scroll Bankur states "I should take the scroll as I believe I am the only one that can properly utilize the magics on it."
"Now, onwards we go. My vote is to cross the northern bridge to the eastern cavern, then head north through the cavern opening. Any other ideas?"
(Assuming Rand takes the sword and inspects it...)
When Rand pulls the sword from its silver-chased scabbard, he can feel the solid weight of it, see the keen edge, the master craftsmanship. He also notices that the magic of the blade emits a faint golden glow. In the dark of the cavern, this dim light is about equal to a candle...enough for Rand to avoid running into walls and stalactites, or engage in melee combat, in a 5' radius. (You have no vision in a dark area beyond 10', so ranged attacks against you from at least 10' away will have advantage. Your Perception at 5'-10' is at disadvantage.)
The party moves onwards towards the north end of the large natural cavern. This room has been finished with dressed stone block walls and a flagstone floor. Several barrels are stored against the walls here, along with a number of empty crates, straw for packing, hammers, pry bars, and nails.
Penumbra gives Rand the other potion and hands the scroll to Bankur. "I'm happy to share the money, but we can split that up later, for now lets find our missing friend, and the missing wife and children."
Upon entering the north room Penumbra says, "Looks like its just a storeroom, these goods are probably stolen from merchants out on Tribor trail."
"Alright fellas and lady, If we aren't gonna check this room out any further may I suggest we creep on over to the south east passage and see whats what?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(Thanks for keeping me moving, Rhanloi!)
Rand inspects the sword. (History check: 15) "Well, I'll be. My dad was handy with the blade and taught me some things about swords of the area. This one here is named Talon. It belonged to a great knight named Aldith Tresendar, better known as the Black Hawk. The bards tell that he died fighting orcs in the caves under his manor... Wow. How have I not recalled that until this moment. It's the very manor that we are under right now!"
When Rand pulls the sword from its scabbard and sees the light, he is pleased, remembering his prayer for some way to see in the dark. "By the Gods, it is a light in the darkness. Bankur, would you mind if I hold on to this fine sword for the time being? I prefer my great sword, but it is rather useless if I can't see! It may be that you or Raldaen, if he yet lives, would be better suited to keep the blade."
If Bankur is amiable to that idea, Rand will strap the sword to his waist and return his great sword to the scabbard behind his back.
"Yes, I suppose one passage is as good as any. Let's move on."
As the others turn to leave the storeroom, you notice some minor differences in the wall immediately to your left (the western wall) and ahead to your right (in the north-east part of the storeroom.) Closer inspection reveals they are secret doors! They are cleverly concealed in the stone and blend in almost perfectly with the surrounding walls.
"Wait."Penumbra says as they start leaving the storage room. "I think..."she mumbles almost to herself as she closely examines the walls. "Yes, there are secret doors hidden here, one on either side of the room." She tries to open the door on the east wall.
The secret door opens easily enough, now that you know where to look! It swings open into the storeroom on hidden hinges, revealing a brightly lit passage, 5 feet wide and leading 15 feet to the south. There are two wooden doors here with iron hinges, handles, and built-in locks. The first one you see, directly across from the secret door, is locked. The door at the south end of the hall is not.
"Well, what do you all say? A secret door seems to cry out to be explored. Shall we? Of course, a place with secrets may also have secret dangers, like that first bridge. Let's be wary as we go. Penumbra, do you think you pop that lock? I'll stand near the door and watch for trouble from both directions." Rand carefully moves into the hall, to the right of the door.
With a few twists and a gentle push, the lock opens under your expert skill! Inside this 10'x15' room, racks of weapons line the walls, including twelve spears, six shortswords, four longswords, six light crossbows, and eight quivers holding twenty crossbow bolts each. A dozen dirty red cloaks hang from hooks by the door. You also recognize a set of new armor and the weapons of your missing party member Raldaen. There are no other doors or features here.
(OK, crew...I'm off for two weeks. We'll take a short rest in the armory. =) Salty Joe, unless Raldaen had something magical, nothing in this room is. You get a sense of necromancy from the area beyond the wall to the south...See you all around the 12th!)
(Have a great vacation sir. This game has been dope! I look forward to your return. I wanted to post Salty's response to his Detect magic to the group before I forget in the coming break.)
"Woah," Salty points to the area beyond the wall to the south. "There's pretty shitty energy coming from over there. Didn't someone say that a section of this base was defended by skeletons?" Salty looks over to Rand and Banker, his eyes still glowing from the ritual, revealing their growing connections to divine energy, "But I get the feeling that was never going to be a problem."
(OK, I'm back! It was a fantastic trip - highly recommend Peru and Machu Picchu! Did anyone try and pick the locked door? Or are you all still in the hallway? Anyways - thanks for waiting!)
((Welcome back!! Glad to hear you had a good time. I'm looking forward to continuing the adventure!))
Bankur nods to Salty Joe while cracking his knuckles "Skeletons and those of their undead ilk are a particular forte of mine for sure, friend Joe."
Moving behind Penumbra, Bankur peers through the recently opened secret door into the short hallway. Spotting the weapons and armor Bankur says "Better than finding a dead body I guess... I hope this means friend Raldaen is near, and still alive! Perhaps we should see what's behind that locked door next?"
