The group gets together at the entrance to the cavern, which is dark overall, but you can see that light comes from the western passages and the northern room entrance. Not enough for the human and genasi to easily see in the natural cave area, but they could get to any of these. The passage to the east is dark.
Once everyone is ready Penumbra will sneak to the closest passage on the west side where she stands in the shadows beside the tunnel listening for any sign of trouble before she enters the lit passage.
If the coast is clear she signals to her companions to follow.
Bankur, squinting to make out the shapes of his friends in the darkness, sees Penumbra's signal and passes it along to Rand. He then begins moving towards the western tunnel, coordinating his movement with Rand and Salty Joe so they stay together.
You hear a strange muttering - but not with your ears. Rather, this whisperings and mutterings are in your head! (Imagine Gollum in the caves when Bilbo first encounters him in The Hobbit...) "What what? Who's this? Does it bring fresh meat? Is it fresh meat? Heeheehee… It brings dark things...secret things...Me like secret things. Ahahahaha!!" You each hear the strange voice describe one of your darkest secrets, one that you've kept hidden in your mind for years, always afraid it would be revealed. The mad rantings in your head are impossible to drown out, try as you might. "Do I tell the others this secret? Hmmm...or do you bring meat to eat? Bones to gnaw? Ears to nibble? Run away, run away, or I'll eat more of your secrets, more of your fingers!"
Penumbra's skin crawls as the voice seems to creep straight into her head, she sees from the faces of her companions that they are hearing it as well. "You want meat? We can bring you meat, but if you go digging in any of our heads for secrets again we will kill you instead. If you like secrets so much perhaps you know some secrets that can help us."Looking to Salty she says, "Talk to it, maybe your silver tounge can persuade it to help us against the Redbrands or at least leave us alone, if it wants meat I'd be happy to feed it some slavers."
(If the DM will allow it I'd like to help Salty with a persuasion check, since im sure anything that can read our minds can tell that Penumbra is 100% serious about being willing to feed it dead Redbrands.)
Salty Joe nods, clears his throat, and while he talks he begins to fart...and he cant seem to stop farting... "You have us at a bit of a disadvantage. *toot*You know our secrets yet we do not know your face.*prrrp* While digging through our minds I'm sure you caught a glimpse of what we are capable of so I ask you this.*Brrrpip*Why don't we help each other?*pip* We can supply you with a healthy load of fresh meat provided by our bandit quarries and we are looking to free our friend in their captivity.*Drrruuubb* As a show of good faith I am willing to share with you one more secret."Persuasion7
Salty tries to pretend everything is normal like this has never happened before but the creature digging in his mind unlocked a childhood nervous twitch. When he was a kid, he would always fart when he was scared out of his mind.
Rand is thankful for the torchlight from Bankur. It helps him to see that spiders are not, in fact, crawling all over him. As his mind struggles to shake off those thoughts, he draws upon his divine sense hoping that it might reveal an attacker if it is a fiend or undead creature. He moves into the room, sword drawn. As he passes his companions, he says, "If anything attacks me, kill it!" He stops at the rock column at the base of the first bridge to look for the source of the attack.
Shaking off a feeling like a death just attempted to grope her brain Penumbra readies her bow and scans the shadows for whatever creature is invading her mind. "Whatever it is it just tried some sort of mental attack on me, I think we are past negotiations now."
(OK...so here's how I figure this will happen. The creature(s) are hidden - I've rolled their stealth. You are actively searching for it, which is an action. Each round, I'll check its stealth vs your perception rolls (so go ahead and roll perception!) Once one of you finds it, then the rest can make attacks. Initiative order: Salty Joe - Bankur - Penumbra - creature(s) - Rand)
Target (now using initiative order): 2 - (Make aDC12 Constitution save, or suffer 12necrotic damage)
(OOC: sorry but I'm totally confused about attack order here - I hope I get this right. And I think I'm the one being attacked?? But not sure...)
Bankur searches the room as thoroughly as he can. "Show yourself cowardly creature!" (OOC: Perception check: 9)
As Bankur moves around the room he jerks upright suddenly like he's been struck by an unseen force. A strange look crosses his face and then he relaxes noticeably. "They tried to attack my mind too, friends. We must find them!"
(Bankur - you are correct - rolled a d4 and counted down initiative order for the target - you are #2 =) Neither of you have found the creature(s) - but good rolls on the saves! Will see how Penumbra and Rand do!)
