A rustle comes from the brush as Craven emerges, “Greet greet greet you, Nissa. Will be getting you down before bad things stab stab eat you.” Craven trundles over and begins swinging his hook, (Fight??? 8). Oh no.
It's really not clear what happened. Actually, it shouldn't have been possible. Whatever went wrong, Craven now dangles, helpless and restrained, right alongside Nissa.
(Take one harm and mark experience, Craven!)
There's a rustle from above. High in the air, one hand and one foot lightly grasping a slender green twig, is a squirrel. Her fur is bright red and her tufted tail is truly enormous. She's also very clearly a child.
With a few bone-chilling acrobatic drops she lands spritely onto a branch only slightly above your positions. She regards you with half-interested curiosity. She carries no weapons (after all: she's a squirrel).
Nissa squints up at the young squirrel. From upside down, and still swinging from Craven's swift ascent, it is hard to quite tell if she knows her. "Well met, swift one. Fate has caught us, I would ask you to turn her hand and set us free."
OOC > I have no clue how squirrels talk, if they are weird and serious like elves, or chipper and weird like sprites, or distant and weird like... well, elves. This may be a fluid characterization. :)

Mazer hears the cry for help, and immediately reacts. Wary of being caught in an ambush, he makes his way quickly but stealthily towards Nissa's voice. He pokes his head through the trees and sees the situation. While the squirrel's attention is turned to the two captives, he attempts to use his sword to cut through the rope before more of its kind come, trusting Nissa and Craven to keep the creature occupied and focused on them.

She chatters in laughter, then swoops upside-down on the branch, dangling in imitation of you.

(Scurry rolled on Discord: Mixed success) Mazer manages to snap the branch holding Craven's hook line in place, causing the lean green mouse to come crashing to the ground (suffering 0 harm). As he advances to free Nissa, though...
A long, delicately curved blade rests lightly against Mazer's throat. "You mice are even louder than the stoat," says a soft accented voice. "Leafstrider! Are you so tired of the ground that you would stoop to this to leave it?"
Nissa cranes her head down to look at the ground. "Some of us cannot climb like t'tree folks, but no, was not t'plan," she says sheepishly. Not one to waste time, she adds, "If t'stoat were a mainland beast, saddled, and carrying t'rider's gauntlet, it is slain by tese ground folk, yesterday."
The gray-furred squirrel with the blade to Mazer's throat chuckles at that. "Tis a roight ol' corker o' t'stoat t'upturn yonder handbarsket, eh?" He asks in a gross exaggeration of Nissa's accent. He makes as though to sheathe his sword, but then his gaze lands upon Craven. His eyes go wide and he spins to face the physicker, every strand of fur suddenly on end. Then, warily glancing between Craven and Mazer, he stows his weapon with a small flourish. Without another word he scurries up the tree to release Nissa (though his bottle-brush tail continues to shake occasionally in agitation). "Beg pardon, young master dormouse." He calls down from just above Nissa's trap. "Would you be so kind as to catch your friend before she hits the ground?"
Unfortunately, while Nissa is returned to terra firma without incident, that trap twisted her ankle (Nissa you have -1 ongoing until otherwise indicated!) The black mouse so rescued, the squirrel returns to the ground and introduces himself as Flit. The bright red youngling accompanying him is his sister, Pherin. Nissa requires no such introduction, however. Flit is a member of a select order of squirrels entrusted with the martial protection of these woods. In fact, Nissa knows Flit's and Pherin's mothers very well.
"So, you put down the stoat. Well done in that, Mouse Guard. Tell me, though, what are four mice, a hare, and an enormous bug doing heading straight for the heart of Kingreach?" asked Flit with a twinkle in his eye. "You wouldn't be searching for a party of drunken mice and shrews, would you?"
Nissa picks herself up off the ground, testing her twisted ankle gingerly, reminding herself to always stay focused in the woods.
"If t'mice and shrews be well, t'en half our journey is done. But t'easy half. Flit, Kingsblade, t'ese are Captain Mazer, Craven, and yon by t'cart is Eli. T'hare is Thornbuck. We go for Firewatch to see what t'green light is."

Mazer catches Nissa, and puts her on the ground, avoiding putting weight on her ankle. It's an injury that will need to be dealt with.
"We are investigating the green light on the mountain," says Mazer, seeing no reason to keep their intent a secret. "We have also incidentally heard about a party such as you describe, that may have been too ambitious. Do you know anything about the former or the latter?"
Craven crawls out of the bushes,“Bah! No like being off ground! Ground is safe safe! Full of predators and stabby stabs, yes, BUT STILL SAFE SAFE!” He turns his gaze to the squirrel, “Oh. Greet.” He turns his gaze away from it.
Flit studiously avoids looking at Craven as the mouse speaks. Then he turns to Nissa and Mazer, saying "Ah, there was a little group of mice and shrews that passed this way two days since. Bad timing, worse luck, I'm afraid. Pherin and I had found-" he stops speaking for half a breath, shakes his head minutely, then continues- "We were giving chase to the predator you say you slew last night. Tell me: was there anything unusual about the beast?"
However you answer, he will add:
"The stoat tore through those mice in a flash. The shrews put up a bit o' fight, but what chance did they have? Pherin and I came upon them as the stoat was worrying at a mouse's throat. It dashed into the woods to the south-" He points downward, right at the site where Nissa's paw tripped the snare trap. "I had rather hoped to have ensnared it this day. The others..." He points to the other side of the trail, an angry, half-amused smirk on his face. "They fled to the north- into the darkest woods. Only the trees know where they are, now."
Eli, recognizing that the conversation in the woods does not appear to have gotten heated or violent, maintains his attention on the cart. "Looks as though our friends ran into some trouble... what? Two days ago, would you say?" Thornbuck circles the cart, careful not to disturb any of the signs of scuffle that surround it. He sniffs the dried blood, then crinkles his nose. "Bit o' mouse... bit o' stoat, but from the looks of it, the brave company made their way off the the trail and into the woods to the north." He snorts. "Damn fools."
Eli (for your 8 on sense), you notice the edge of something poking out from underneath the overturned cart. It's a little keepsake box. It's latched, and there's no sign of a key. This is likely important to someone...
Eli will take the box, being careful to not damage it. He will make no move to open it, simply nod at Thornbuck, “This may be missed. We should keep it for when we find its owner. I believe your assessment is correct, master Hare. Let us find the others and inform them of the path we now follow.” He’ll then head towards the sound of talk and the earlier commotion.
When they arrive, Eli will take a stock of the situation, but his attention will be drawn to the limping Nissa. “Nissa, you are injured, let me mend you. Our competition should not be marred by handicap!” He smiles, briefly, then returns to the familiar stoic expression. (If Nissa is willing, I’ll attempt to Lay on Hands.)
To flit, she repeats, "T'stoat was large, mainland, saddled and carrying a gauntlet," she indicates Mazer should bring it out. She describes the stoat's coloring and markings, to ensure it is the same one.

Eli slaps his paws together, rubbing the palms together in a quick motion. He does this three times, then lays them gently on the injured ankle of Nissa. Careful not to press too hard, he runs his warmed palms over the foot, focusing on the damage, and drawing it out. It takes only moments, but when done, Nissa's ankle seems good as new. Nodding quickly to himself, Eli steps back, trying to mask the slight hitch he now suddenly has in his own step.
To flit, she repeats, "T'stoat was large, mainland, saddled and carrying a gauntlet," she indicates Mazer should bring it out. She describes the stoat's coloring and markings, to ensure it is the same one.
Flit stares off into the distance for a moment, and then a moment longer. Finally, without acknowledging whether the stoat you killed was the same he pursued, he says. "The light on the Peak... The king hasn't been seen since it appeared." He turns to Mazer. "Captain, you have been charged with uncovering its source? My people do not know what it is, but we are certain of this: it spells peril for Loamholt."
Eli enters the scene (Thornbuck, seeing that you all are conversing with a squirrel, rolls his eyes and saunters back to the cart). Noticing Nissa favoring her ankle, the large mouse kneels by her side to inspect it (Lay on Hands: 9). The rest of you continue to converse, and suddenly...
Suddenly, the forest is still. The quality of light in the clearing shifts and brightens. The sounds of birdsong overhead and the buzzing of nearby insects is almost painfully loud, and your heartbeat is in your throat, and then-
Then the moment passes. Nissa's moves her foot experimentally and grins at Eli. Eli, meanwhile, shows no outward sign that anything is wrong.
(Nissa's -1 ongoing is ended; Eli takes disadvantage forward)
