There exists a demi-plane known as Port Mourn, perpetually shrouded in the dark, icy rain falls unrelentingly in the fog choked streets. This is a realm of trickery, misinformation and secrets - Those brought off the ships soon find themselves put to work as scribes forever tasked with the job of transcribing the secrets, lies and whispers of mortals or archiving them within the labyrinthian that resides beneath the port city.
For those of you interested you will be playing as characters that on the very edge of desperation that have pleaded for aid only for something to answer and in their haste they have exchanged one fate for service to the master of Port Mourn. Having awoken aboard the ship carrying you towards the port you have been marked for great things, your group will be sent out back amongst the mortals to sow mayhem, confusion and mistrust.

As a researcher and acolyte of the church of Labelas Enoreth, Kailana spends her days in pursuit of knowledge and forgotten pieces of history. Her particular interests lay in cataloging lesser known languages, oftentimes of extraplanar origins. Her body of work includes:
- One Thousand Ways to Sign Away your Soul: An Analysis of Infernal Contracts - A Treatise on Primordial Lingua Franca shared between Steam and Salt Mephit - Meaning from Madness: Making Sense of Dretch Communication
While doing field research on Kobold religous iconography, Kailana unwittingly entered the territory of an adult green dragon. Upon coming face-to-face with the fearsome beast, which had a penchant for toying with its meals, it presented the cleric of knowledge with a little game of riddles. If she answered its riddles correctly, and could respond with one it could not answer, she could walk with her life. Kailana racked her brain for the most obscure and difficult riddles she knew, but the dragon grinned and rattled off correct answers for each one. In return, the dragon only asked her Elven children's riddles, completely confident that Kailana could not ask it a question it could not solve. Finally, it warned her that this was her last chance, and Kailana knew that she had no puzzles left up her sleeve that would trick the cunning creature. In that moment she prayed to Enoreth to provide her with a riddle that the dragon could not answer, but Enoreth did not respond. Something else did, and Kailana agreed to pledge her service in exchange for that crucial knowledge.
And thus Kailana was able to stump the beast and escape with her life, but now is left with more questions to answer:
- What had she done to be ignored by Enoreth during her time of need? - Whom exactly did she pledge her service to?
Personality:
The solution to today's problems can oftentimes be found in the past
There is no greater joy than uncovering a hidden bit of knowledge
Is perhaps too willing to converse with entities of unknown origins
Valia grew up the youngest child of House Corwynn. She was the illegitimate child of Lord Corwynn and an elven adventurer. Despite this she grew up in her father's house and wanted for nothing. She grew up with the best education, food, and material things that gold could buy. She elder brothers and sisters doted on her. She had everything a young half-elf girl could want growing up. Except the love and acceptance of Lady Corwynn and the power that her siblings were promised to wield when they grew up.
One day, her sorcerous powers revealed themselves. Her eyes changed color and red scales burst forth from the back of her hands, arms, and back. Lord Corwynn hired several magical tutors to teach his daughter. Each attempted to teach Valia, but in the end left frustrated and annoyed. They claimed that she was 'too arrogant' and 'unteachable'. All the while she would lose control of her power and inevitably destroy something in the manor. Eventually Lady Corwynn grew sick of the accidents and had Valia sent away to a distant relative, Lady Corwynn's uncle Lord Anders Jilain. He did now treat her the way her father's house had. He kept her confined to her quarters most of the time and if she had a magical mishap she wouldn't be fed. During this time she slowly gained control of her magic. She didn't need a tutor. She simply needed the force of personality and the willpower to control the draconic power that ran in her veins. The treatment she received in Lord Jilain's household turned her resentment to rage. Who was this man to dare try to control her? He was nothing. She was the defendant of a dragon. Her magical mishaps stopped becoming accidents, and before the year was out the Jilain manor burned to the ground due to 'mysterious circumstances'. In the chaos she escaped, running away to a nearby hamlet where she was able to get a horse and some supplies thanks to some liberal use of her family's name. She left the hamlet and traveled across the land. She didn't know what to do. She could return home, but to what? A guided cage where she was pampered but had no real say in her life? Now she had a taste of real power, and she wanted more. She decided to travel the lands searching for her mother, an elf named Ilyaana, and to discover who her draconic ancestor was. She believed that they deserved a thank you.
Judith is the last in a line of priests who served Eldath, the Goddess of peace. Her life as a temple acolyte was humble yet pleasant, but most members of the temple knew that someday the tensions between the Eldathians and the followers of Bhaal would boil over into outright war. When that fateful day came, Judith was among those charged with defending the temple. It was a massacre. As it became clear that neither she nor her fellow worshipers would leave alive, she got on her knees and began to pray. At first those prayers were for her friends', but as the enemies relentless march drew closer, they shifted to pleas for her own survival. She was shocked when she opened her eyes and discovered she was alive. Someone or something had answered her prayers.

Backstory:
Your early life was nothing special. An only son to an innkeeper and a smith, you grew up helping your father (the innkeeper) brewing beer for the inn. When you were old enough you went off to work as a miner. During a scout of a cave system for ores and gems you found a strange gem. As you touched it, it exploded, bringing you to the brink of death.
In the darkness between life and death something moved, hunting you. And you know that if it catches you, you will cease to exist, no afterlife. But something thrust an amulet in your hand and pushed you back to the side of life. Around you the cave had collapsed. It took 2 days to crawl back to the town, half-dead.
Although you are now firmly among the living, you can still feel IT hunting you, watching, waiting. It invades your dreams, and appears in every shadow you see. The amulet is a miniature silver gate, and you can feel it pushing energy into you, giving you power you could only have dreamed of a mere week ago. Some unknown force pulled you away from your home. You wandered aimlessly for months, maybe even years, scratching a living however you could. But when you hit rock bottom, anything was better than dying alone from starvation in a dark alley...
Rotadore was nobleborn and had a quite fruitful life, learning history, meeting other nobles, and the likes. Then his life took a turn, one for the worst. His family had a "Freak Accident" while he and his twin sister, Irorila had been at home sick from some virus and they were on a trip. Then one of the servants, a young girl named Hannah told them what really happened and was told to some of the servants to do to the two of them, this was planned. Their family was in reality killed by someone unknown and the two of them were in danger, so the two of them sick and tired, gathered what they could and ran away. Along the way they got split up and have not seen each one another since, He knows she is still alive out there he just does, but he still has yet to find her and has had to turn to stealing to get by.
Edric Aloro lived with his father Beric on a small croft. His mother had died during child birth and his father raised him alone. He taught Edric hunting, archery, fishing, how to grow crops, and how to tend the few goats and chickens they had.
One early morning a couple of hours before dawn, Edric set out to hunt some game for him and his father as he had done countless times before. The morning air was unusually cold for this time of year he noted. As he stalked through the forest he also noticed the deafening silence. He couldn’t even hear his own breathing. Then a voice softly called out to him by name. Almost trancelike Edric followed the voice. Finally, he came upon a small clearing in the forest. He had explored these woods for years and could not recall ever seeing this clearing. In the center was a humanoid creature of shadow darker than the early morning sky. Dark wisps of shadow spun off and disappeared from the creature like smoke.
Edric felt as though he knew this creature and felt no fear from it, but he also felt that he shouldn’t be here. The shadow began to move towards him and when it got within inches in front of him it began to circle him. He couldn’t move as the creature crept behind him and whispered in his ear.
“Yes, you’ll do. You should be getting home now Edric. Don’t worry we’ll have plenty of time to get to know one another.”
Suddenly Edric woke on the forest floor covered in sweat and feeling weak. He rose, gathered his bow, and looked up towards the sky. Still trying to get his bearings he saw the sun had risen. No that wasn’t right it was on the wrong side. If that were true it’s actually setting. Fear suddenly gripped him what was that shadow? When did fall asleep? Was it a dream or had something got hold of him for who knows how long? He ran back towards his family’s croft. As he got nearer he could smell blood. His father wouldn’t be slaughtering a goat. They had food stored and the milk they produced was more valuable than the meat.
He came home to find the animal pens smashed and every animal slaughtered, skinned, and displayed on several pikes. The door to the cottage was smashed into several pieces. Fearing the worst he rushed inside. What little furniture they had was splayed all over the floor in bits. Near the hearth charred bits of wood, ash, and embers showed that there was a fire relatively recently. Luckily or not, Edric couldn’t find his father.
He ran back outside. It was dark, but he should be able to find some trace of whoever did this and, presumably, took his father. As he scanned the ground he heard a familiar voice call out to him. He turned to see the shadow creature standing in the doorway.
“I saved you, young Edric Aloro. Customarily that would call for a favor.” Said the shadow.
“What do you mean you saved me?!” Edric shouted. “Who are you?”
”If I hadn’t called out to you your fate would be the same as these animals. I’d call that salvation. And even more fortunately for you, your father isn’t dead... yet. Also, I’m in an especially giving mood and could grant you the power to find him. You seem to be the luckiest person alive. Or at least around here you are.” The shadow let out an echoing cackle which Edric took for laughter.
”You said something about a favor. What did you mean? What would you ask of me?”
”Nothing too terribly complicated. All I ask is that you allow me to travel with you... so to speak.”
”So to speak? What does that mean.”
“Yes or No, Edric?”
”Answer my question!”
“Yes or no.” The shadow said. Only this time it was more stern and with a hint of anger and annoyance.
Edric’s mind was racing. He didn’t believe a single thing this shadow was telling him. However, if at the very least it could help him find his father he couldn’t pass up that chance.
“Deal” Edric said finally.
The shadow rushed toward him and enveloped him. All he could see was darkness. All he felt was cold. All he could hear was a raucous wailing sound. Then moonlight and the cottage appeared before him again. He could see the stars and slaughtered animals. Despair came back to him. He needed to find his father.

To give a bit of idea of where you would be starting:
Port Mourn is an independent city state secured within its own demi-plane. Fuelled by secrets, intrigue and guarded by lies, the city itself is home to all manner of inter- planar entities and organisations, the port city has earned a reputation for piracy, mercenary work, information brokering and a place to hide from authorities should you be of value.
Few outside the residents of the city realise that the city is both built upon and part of a vast labyrinthine library holding the secrets, thoughts and desires of mortals, such is the vast power gathered within that it has warped time, space and planes. It is guarded at all times by innumerable defences such that the few who have dared to attack the city have still been considered second to containing what lies within. The sea that surrounds the port city is a manifestation of the Astral sea itself, raging against the shores of the mighty city constantly, few dare sail this sea bar the tattered fleets of the city and those foolish or brave enough to venture to this realm.
Talos is a bright young gnome who is, on the whole, too hungry for knowledge for his own good. Impatient with the slow and careful tutelage of his teachers, he struck a bargain with a minor devil: a senseless act of cruelty in exchange for the spellbook of a long-departed wizard. But Talos outsmarted the devil, fulfilling the terms of the contract without actually doing anything morally compromising, and the devil was forced to yield his payment.
Talos was overjoyed: at long last, true power to study and practice from! His master soon found out what transpired and punished him, though it was not severe; all wizards admire a good trick, especially at the expense of a devil.
Unfortunately, the devil didn't much like that. Because of the contract, Talos couldn't be harmed, but for months thereafter, members of his family were constantly harangued by a series of small inconveniences, near misses, or minor curses. A cart would almost run them over, or a small rainstorm would delay them en route to somewhere important, or a patch of their crops wouldn't grow as well.
Ashamed of his momentary greed, he's never told them why these things are happening. But now one of his six brothers, Tyro, has gone missing, and no one knows why. Even Talos's skill at divination hasn't been able to uncover the truth, or the faintest hint of Tyro's whereabouts.
Guided by the whispers of his master, Torgren, and on the advice of more senior wizards at the academy, Talos was directed to Port Mourn, but with stern words of caution: "It is a place of knowledge — but also of intrigue and darkness. Be on your guard!"
