Bukowyr awaits for the party to be gathered in front of the gate as he lets his vision to adjust to the light from Kai's enchanted axe and notices how it reflects upon her skin. Like refracting where it touches making a strange watercolor contrast. Her webbed fingers and...what was that on her neck? Gills?
The half-elf newcomer also had her own graceful mannerisms. However, she seems jumpy. Ready to answer with violence. She might not survive much in the Underdark. Should he be worried about her emotions? Is she uncontrollable?
What about the giant following them? He seemed always ready to protect. Bukowyr had to keep in mind using the companion's size for his own advantage as he stealthily maneuvers close to enemies. Might they come up with a strategy together? Was that giant trustworthy to that point?
As they're walking, Torvus peers into the trees and underbrush. "Well, as much as this simply seems to be a dreadful forest, I certainly have never heard of a place called Barovia, in story or song, book or ballad. And especially not anything like those gates Bukowyr's shown us. But perhaps the creatures that live in these woods would know better?"
He whistles and trills in what sounds for a moment like a combination of a quiet birdsong and a raven's cawing, and listens for any answer from the eaves.
(OOC: Torvus uses his Speak with Small Beasts feature: "You can communicate simple ideas with Small or smaller beasts.". He asks, "What is on the other side of the gate?")
Kai watches Torvus curiously for a moment before leaving him to whatever he is doing, waiting patiently for him to finish so they can advance forward. Kai, noticing Bukowyr's staring, gives him a curious smile, almost subconsciously asking him to speak his mind.

Headless statues always gave Kayla the creeps. It always seemed like such a specific act, even if it was just time's toll on the stone. Taking out her hand crossbow, she ignores the swell of indistinct whispers in her head. She was going to be cautious here. A new Plane meant new people and a wealth of new dangers.
"Let's hurry past these. There is something unnerving about them."
Perception21 -Kayla is constant looking about for enemies.
Having been caught staring, Bukowyr freezes in place, body stiff, moving only his eyes to another direction and his expression unchanging. He sees Kayla making her preparations and her eyes ready for action. Craving for it, perhaps? Is there a beast inside her or what? Meanwhile, Bukowyr took notice of the sage speaking with animals. He himself had interest on that, but his little experience with animals in general and surface animals in particular were hindering him from learning. Would that change soon? Would he be able to learn from this surface gnome?
Bukowyr can hear a slight friendly chuckle from Kai before she moves to gather any rock she can find on the ground. She will cast light on the rock and smile to the others. "Anyone want to try ti get this through the gate between the statues? It might trigger any traps or get the attention of any monsters and bring them into sight." She offers the rock to anyone who wants to try while they wait for Torvus to finish speaking to any creatures. She looks to find my throwable rocks, stowing some in her pack for use later.

Kayla slaps her face. Of all the times to forget her 12 foot pole! Bargas the Bard told her it was the key piece of adventurer equipment and she'd forgotten it!
Torvus smiles as Bukowyr watches him. "Oh, this? It's just a parlor trick. When you grow up in a forest you pick up one or two of those. I am sure you have one or two of your own parlor tricks, my friend."
He watches Kai and thinks for a moment. "We could also just ask Nightgleam to take a trip over the gate and see what's there. He is swift on the wind, but even so, it would take a bit of time to get over a gate that size. And I imagine an owl is less conspicuous than a glowing rock."
Kai shrugs and smiles "That's an option. This was mainly a means for both entertainment and strategy while you spoke with the animals. If Nightgleam wouldn't mind, we could wait for him to fly and investigate. I would assume he could fly through the gate for a faster route if that is prefered."
Kai will drop the light on the rock and put it in her pack with the others, keeping the light spell on her axe. She will return to gathering some more rocks, decidedly using her coin pouch (which is relatively empty) to gather a bunch of small sized rocks, relocating the gathered rocks out if her pack and into the pouch until it is decently full.
Once this is accomplished, Kai will open her canteen, pulling a small ball of water out to swirl around her fingers, passing the time while the others decide what to do.
(OOC: I'm Assuming the gate is open like the provided picture? And for the fun of it, can I add a pouch of X number or small rocks to Kai's inventory. XD)
(I'm going to roll 4 d20's and drop the lowest for the rock amount if that's alright. Just so I dont manage to get an ridiculous amount of rocks. )

Kai will glance up from her water bending to look at Tarvus. "Did that Raven tell you anything? Should we send Nightgleam and wait or continue forward now?" Kai hooks her small sack of 40 small rocks onto her waist for easy access and waits for anyone's input.

Torvus perks up at the mention of a city, and replies in the peculiar mix of birdsong and cawing. "Thank you, friend raven. Would you care for a warm snack?"
He tears off a chunk of one of his rations and cups his hands over it for a moment, whispering an arcane word into his hands. The durable but otherwise bland food warms up and is imbued with his favorite seasonings.
(OOC: Torvus casts prestidigitation: "You chill, warm, or flavor up to 1 cubic foot of nonliving material for 1 hour." He offers the ration chunk to the raven.)
Whether the raven accepts or not, he follows up with a second question. "I don't suppose you've felt a... presence? Something watching, with eyes or ears on you?"

Torvus shifts back and forth uncomfortably. "We conversed. There is a city and some wagons, he says.. And... something else, another presence. We aren't alone." He shivers. "But yes, let's see what Nightgleam has to say." He whistles twice and the owl bursts out of the eaves with ferocious speed, soaring as high as he dares to see over the gates.
(OOC: Nightgleam hides {Stealth: 13} and then moves under cover for as long as he can, always staying within sight of Torvus if he can.)

Kai nods with understanding, putting the water back into her canteen, and becomes more alert, looking around them quiety as she mumble softly to herself and her fingertips glow the familiar aqua green of her sacred flame with the held spell, ready to let it fly at any threats she may spot or may appear while the group waits on word from Nightgleam.

Benito is very uncomfortable throughout the expedition so far. Hearing Torvus mention that the raven had told him that there is another presence here sets him on high alert. He unsheathes his great sword, wiping away the due and frost that had accumulated on his blade. "A sharp blade indeed, may be the solution to today's problems" He keeps a keen eye on his surroundings, worried that their position doesn't seem very advantageous at the moment.

Kai nods in agreement to Benito and let's the spell die at her fingertips once Torvus gives the all clear, the glow fading out and she moves to slightly take the lead with her still glowing axe. "As long as there are no surprises ahead, we should move. We are exposed here. We'll be safer behind walls." As she leads the way, (assuming Bukowyr is still going to scout ahead?), she will also thin the fog within 5 feet of them, making it easier to see ahead. She will keep a careful eye around them as they approach the gate and statues.
As they near, is the gate open and are there any sounds within, now that they are closer?
General perception for around them and any noises: 18
