After the initial look into what state this room is in, Velten waits for everyone to catch up to him by the stairs. On his way to the stairs Tine can't help but look over a few of the books scattered about the room. Several seem to be general texts found just about anywhere, but one in particular seems to have caught the wizard's interest. He hovers over the book that remains open on the large table.
Tine's look of curiosity turns quickly to concern. "Hm. It appears this text is being altered by some form of magic or illusion. I don't think Rindal wanted anyone to know what he was studying here." Tine looks at the group waiting at the base of the stairs and locks eyes with the cleric. "Can anyone attempt to dispel whatever has been cast over these books? Mundak?"
Vosnin heads over to the fire place. It doesn't appear to have been used for some time, maybe 3 days or more. Seeing the rest of the room around him it is easy to notice that this whole room seems to have been untouched for about the same amount of days. He then heads back to the group as Mundak finishes casting his spell. The script int the book begins to shift and disappear, revealing the true text behind it.
Journal Entry #8
It was far more effective then I had hoped. It continues to feed with no sign of end, maybe I did overstep myself. Now I have to find a solution but pouring over these worthless texts revealed nothing my magnificent brain didn't already know. I am heading back to bargain with it, perhaps I can use simple words to convince it to stop.
"Hmm. It seems our friend Rindal here was up to something quite secretive," Tine continues to scan the journal for any clues as to what's going on, or where Rindal may have gone. "I suppose we need to find where "it" is."
[OOC: Anything else in the journal? Entries 1-7? Haha]
So they think they can keep me from doing my work? Fools they don't know anything. I'll show them. Nobody suspects a thing, they are all too blinded by their petty gains that mean nothing in the long term. I just wanted them to see it too! It's too late for them and now I go about this alone.
Journal Entry #2
Meesho has helped a grand deal gathering the ingredients I need in my stead. Easy for a nimble cat to move about this town unnoticed. I was able to study the text I found more thoroughly now that I have much less distraction. Hertle came by today, to check and see if I was doing okay. I just yelled at him to leave me alone, I am busy and don't need distractions. It gave me an idea.
Journal Entry #3
I enchanted my portrait to yell at any who knock on my door to leave me alone. It worked so well it's astounding. Now I don't have t worry about their distractions once again. I am so close to where I need to be I can feel it. Meesho has started to gather small enchanted items in preparation for the final step. I do hope this works.
Journal Entry #4
I thought I could handle the smith's hammering.. oh my head hurts. It's becoming unbearable. I'll have to move down stairs sooner then I had hoped. There are just a few steps I can hopefully finish today before I descend. I have summoned a chest to store everything I am going to need. It will make transporting it all much more simple.
Journal Entry #5
Now with everything in place all that is left is to add some protection to my home. I've reinforced my office door with some arcane improvements as well as my bedroom upstairs. I've also added another magic mouth to Meesho on my portrait. Should anyone try to break into my home it'll be known to everyone! With all this taken care of I move down. It is time to show them the truth of Manalith.
Journal Entry #6
The summoning worked. IT WORKED! Oh how exciting! Everything will come into place shortly. Oh I can't wait to rub it into everyone's faces. So far everything is going according to plan. Once I am able to showcase my work the town will finally be mine to control. These foolish idiots, wasting their time digging where no true answers can be found. All those scholars holed up translating texts that hold no answers. I'll show them.
Journal Entry #7
It is more beautiful then I imagined! The heart of Manalith.. it is.. spectacular. I knew it would lead me to it! Now I can finally begin my research into how it works. There is one down side.. I cannot send it back and I am running low on items to feed it. It grows more and more greedy, it's hunger insatiable no matter what I do. Maybe.. maybe I can let it feed of the heart a little bit. It should be fine. Maybe.
As Ignus pours over the text in the journal the rest of the group begins to move up to the second level.
OOC: I didn't want to fill the thread with maps of the same floor as you discover new rooms so please don't meta. Your characters don't know what is beyond either of the doors displayed in this map. You arrive on the floor from the right side of them map.
Tine catches up with the group after carefully reading the journal entries. "We should hurry and search the rest of the house. It seems whatever Rindal was working on is below. There was another door downstairs. Perhaps it leads to a basement level...although the journal mentioned something about protecting his bedroom and office with arcane improvements."
Tine scans the open book on the table, and begins to look concerned as he reads. "Rindal was studying planar travel, which means whatever he summoned..." He takes a deep breath and looks around, stopping when his gaze lands upon the scrying orb on the other side of the room.
"My friend Arius has one of these...let me see if I can..." Tine puts his hands out toward the orb and attempts to use it to see who Rindal was watching.
Vosnin moves over to the first door of the room. "Well, if its answers we seek I'm sure having closed doors wont be of any help." He pulls from his pack a set of thieves' tools and gets to work on the lock.
Lockpick: 27
Vosnin struggle with the lock for a short time, and for a moment he thinks it might be beyond his abilities when suddenly he hears a click followed by a zap. It seems there was some sort of enchantment helping the lock stay in place, but Vosnin was able to successfully pick the lock regardless.
"If he's protecting something specifically we need to try and bypass the security," Velten replies to Tine, "This is why you don't keep journals, so narcissistic."
Velten explores the main room on the second floor, noticing the books on the table and the orb Tine has been working with. This Rindal seems to be very cautious here in his home, I wonder if he planned on people breaking in? Velten wonders.
Vosnin makes and audible click with the lock and the door opens. "Nice work!" Velten exclaims. Velten and Vosnin move into the bedroom to see what can be found.

As Vosnin enters with Velten, they peer into the room. It seems to be a bedroom, two bookshelves to their left, a chest of the adjacent wall, a large bed in the far corner, and a desk straight ahead.
"Maybe I'll hold off on that chest, his locks seem.. well armed. Wouldn't want to set something off without intending to do so."
Tine joins them in the room. "I wasn't able to pick up much on the orb. It hasn't been used recently...probably not since that last journal entry was written and Rindal set off." He looks around, searching for anything else that might be a clue.
Investigation: 12
Tine realizes if they're going to get to the bottom of this, they'll really need to focus. He attempts to block out any distractions and looks around the room again...
"What..." Tine freezes as his eyes catch something peculiar. He walks over to Velten, kneels down, and reaches out to touch a box attached to the underside of one of the shelves. "This is locked but looks easily breakable. Velten, Vosnin...anyone want to take a crack at it?"
"Hmm," Velten eyes up the box Tine is holding, "seems like if we just..." he takes the box from Tine and attempts his trailing thought carefully, as to not break anything inside.
As Velten handles the box there is a sound of metal on wood. Velten tries pulling the box apart but due to its small size it is too hard to grip, then he tries to crush it in his hands at which point the box splinters and a large skeleton key falls to the floor with a tag attached to it with only a single word written on it; "cellar"
"Hm." Tine extends a mage hand to the floor to pick up the key. "Seems odd that he would label his own secret key. Still, it's yet another lead if the rest of the house doesn't turn up anything interesting."
Mundak leaves the room and heads to the second door on this level. He opens the door without any problem, revealing another flight of stairs heading up to another level.
Tine immediately heads over to the books and starts searching through them to see if anything jumps out at him as important.
