Morgan feels the brazier move slightly, but is unable to overturn it, as the thing is just too heavy. He does feel, that if he had any support, that might have been enough.
Donovan's spell is powerful, but, unfortunately, is aimed slightly too high, so the creature is able to lower itself just enough for the bolt to miss it.
Having parried the spell, the creature focuses on its original target, Mordai. It strikes first with its beak, then with its tentacles.
Grell Beak Attack: 8, Damage: 7
Grell Tentacle Attack: 20, Damage: 9
If the tentacle attack is successful, Mordai must make a DC 11 constitution save or be paralyzed.
At the same time, Vitae shouts some kind of a curse and a fiery ring erupts from him, expanding and, for a second, filling up the room. dealing everyone nearby (including the creature) Fire damage.
Mordai is able to dodge the attack coming from the creature's beak, but is not fast enough to do the same for its tentacles. They impact upon his neck and throat, dealing 9 damage and attempting to poison their victim. On his next turn, Mordai must make a DC 11 Constitution save, or be paralyzed and unable to act in that round. He can repeat this for each round, until he makes the save, after which he will be able to act normally.
Vitae's Spell impacts upon all of you, including the Creature, who manages to save against it, but still takes 3 damage. All of you must, on your next turn, make a dexterity or constitution save (your choice) with a DC of 15. If you make it, you take 3 damage, but if you fail, you take 6 damage.
Mordai is fairly hurt but the look on his face is one of pure hatred as he twirls his hands and a green orb dripping with some type of liquid forms and he tosses it at the creature in front of him. Chromatic Orb.
Tozo takes a step back next to Morgan (move to I6, taking the Disengage action if necessary) and stands ready to give it another push. The winds howling around him continue blasting towards the brazier. "Another try?" he grimaces up at Morgan, hefting his tiny frame against the brazier (take the Help action to assist Morgan).
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Botting Donovan for this round. He wishes to help with overturning the brazier, but knowing his strength (or lack thereof), instead chooses to help the visibly hurt Mordai, casting Healing Word and healing him for 6. He also attempts to save against the flame ring, choosing to resist it instead of avoiding it: 17.
Mordai is able to save against the creature's attempt to poison him, but is just unable to do the same against the mad Wizard's flame ring, taking 6 damage. However, his offensive capabilities result in a magnificent magic orb somehow made of acid impacting upon the monster's beak, dealing a whopping 25 damage. The creature is clearly hurt, though is not yet close to dying.
Reginald is having a very unlucky day, as his attempt to kill the wizard fails again, the elderly man somehow managing to swerve to avoid being hit with the dagger, smirking arrogantly in the process. Also, his unlucky streak continues, as he fails to save against the flame ring, being dealt 6 damage.
Tozo offers his support to Morgan, both providing encouragement and a helping hand. In the process, he does not even attempt to save against the flame ring, being dealt 6 damage.
However, Tozo's sacrifice is not in vain, as Morgan (who is also burnt by the spell and takes 6 damage), is able to, just barely, lift the brazier from its legs and turn it over. The fire is extinguished, with smoldering embers being scattered all over the floor.
Once the brazier falls, a few things happen at once. The magical web between Vitae, the flame and the three peasants dissipates, with the poor victims falling down on the pedestal, still breathing. The reaction of Vitae is, the stuff of nightmares, however. He looks at Morgan with bloody murder in his eyes and shouts as loudly as you can imagine anyone ever to shout:
"YOU DARE???!!!"
He aims his finger at Morgan, giving his all into a terrifying spell. Instead of red, a pillar of dark purple flame strikes Morgan, immediately knocking him back. The flames overpower his body, dealing 21 damage. He must make a Constitution Save with a DC of 14, or be immediately knocked unconscious as well. The save, even if made, cannot reduce the damage taken.
The creature, at the same time, is still focused on Mordai. However, it chooses to change tactics and, instead of two strikes, tries one devastating attack with its beak.
Attack roll: 9
Damage roll: 18
After the second round, Mordai is extremely hurt, with Donovan's healing spell being the thing that has managed to keep him on his feet. Donovan, Tozo and Reginald are slightly hurt, but can still consider themselves to be healthy. Morgan, thanks to his strong constitution, is actually faring slightly better than Mordai, but may or may not lose consciousness in the coming seconds.
The creature is clearly hurt as well, while the wizard has yet to be touched, but has lost his prisoners, meaning that he is, basically, just as healthy as any other elderly man.
Here's the placement after the second round:
It is your turn next, beginning the third round. Only Morgan has to make a save before his next action.
Mordai closes his eyes and mumbles some words as four glowing bright orbs swirl around his head and then each orb streaks to impact the creature in front of him. [spell]Magic Missile[\spell]
[ooc: currently sitting on a plane about to fly home and can’t figure out how to roll damage, Nonexcusat can you do it for me.]
Panting with the exertion of helping to overturn the brazier, Tozo takes a moment to catch his breath. He cups his hand, as if holding an imaginary rock, then makes a throwing motion at the wizard. He shouts "Merlendo!", and a sphere of rippling, invisible energy flies from the gnome's hand. He grins with apparent glee as it arcs towards Vitae.
Morgan breathes deeply after lifting the brazier but for a seconds rest he is hit by the wizards spell, he tries to steel himself as his mind begins to waver.
Con save: 19
Bonus action second wind: 4
Morgan is able to hold onto his consciousness and will try and grapple Vitae.
Mordai Magic Missile at second level: 6 plus 7 (OOC, I know it should not be rolled this way, I just misclicked the first time).
Botting Donovan for this round as well: At the same time, Donovan runs towards Mordai, putting his hand on his friend's shoulder and healing him for 7.
Reginald's attack, unlike the previous attempts, is very successful, with his dagger finding an opening and striking into the Wizard's chest. The blade cuts deep, going inbetween the old man's ribs, carving a hole inside his heart. Vitae looks down, with surprise and disbelief.
"no..." he whispers, denial evident on his face. Before he is able to take in what has just happened, and without really feeling the pain, his body crumples onto the floor, with no life left within it. Morgan, upon approaching the body, sees that the old man is dead, his quest for immortality finally ending in failure.
At the same time, the attacks from Mordai and Tozo impact upon the creature from both sides, with the monster's body contorting from pain and, with one final shriek, it collapses onto the floor as well, leaving a mess of flesh and blood behind.
The party has the time to take in what they just achieved and, a few seconds after, hear a voice from behind. It is Tarden, who, clearly, could not bare to leave his friends alone and went up to help anyway. He is kneeling at the still breathing body of the older man, who Vitae had knocked out before, and, having examined him and made sure that he's alive, has turned to you:
"What... what happened here? Are you or these people all right?"
[OOC: I mean to cast my magic missile vs the creature at 1st level, but I f'ed up the description by saying 4 missiles instead of 3, so I am going to uncheck a 1st level spell slot and then check a sorcery point down. Sorry about the confusion.]
Speaking to Tarden, "It seems Vitae here was using the other misguided villagers as fonts for his own vitality in some ritual spell that would have drained the life force from them and given it to himself. Thankfully he is dead now and hopefully the villagers will recover."
Mordai will then walk over to the other villagers and check on them to see if they need any healing help.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Tozo sighs wearily at the grisly scene, taking it all in and looking back at Tarden and his compansions. "It's all so unnecessary. How did these poor folks come to believe this charlatan?"
As the others take their time, Tozo spends a few minutes preparing a spell, and his eyes glimmer for a moment. He examines the room closely(18) for any notes Vitae might have, important possessions, and any other defenses that might still be active. "Careful, friends. We don't know what else is here."
Morgan is interested in what Tozo is doing, but he is feeling the pain of Vitae’s spell still and takes a moment to himself. He will go downstairs and have a look around before he gets everyone’s equipment and brings it to them.
“I will get everyone’s things for them, just make sure you check yourselves over.”
Tarden and Mordai first examine every one of the peasants on the floor, then Tarden says:
"They are all doing fine. It seems that the three on the pedestal are simply exhausted and require sleep, and when they wake up, food. These three, near the wall, however, they may have concussions, or something similar, but nothing too dangerous I assume. They will all be fine by tomorrow. These two, however, and whatever the third one is," Tarden points at Vitae, the splattered peasant and the monster, "Their bodies should be burned, there is no way back for them. Thank you, friends, you have done a service to this village and, at the very least, saved these six poor souls".
Tozo, in the meantime, looks around. The room is clearly messy, but there does not seem to be any traps or magical barriers there whatsoever. The places of interest should be Vitae's desk, his shelves, and, of course, the large chest near the stairs.
The desk is awash with a variety of papers and scrolls. They are all very rambling and incoherent, though. If a wizard of at least mediocre talent had several years to decipher this all, Vitae's work maybe could be salvaged, and his rituals repeated. However, they are quite useless right now, with the parchment previously read by Reginald, which said "Should find out what that magical discharge was in the south east. Newcomer Involved? Maybe! Mayhaps she wants to get the Great Vitae's attention. She will get it soon", being the only one that seems immediately useful.
The books are mostly about subjects that have nothing to do with anything, ranging from "a brief history of the Empire" to "how to spay a pig". However, the one book that seems to be interesting, is "The Pocket Atlas of Hackleton". In it, if interested, you can find brief descriptions of interesting phases in the history of the duchy you currently find yourselves in, as well as two maps that could be of use, one of the duchy itself, and the other of the county of Thornby, where you are right now:
As you can see, you are in the northernmost part of the duchy (and the peninsula), with the Duke's lands being in the south. The second map describes the county of Thornby itself, with the baronies contained within, as well as the Count's lands.
Genmore is, of course, not important enough to be placed on the map. However, Vitae, or a previous owner of the book, has helpfully checked its location with red ink.
The real treasure, however, is contained within the chest. In it, you can find three scrolls, as well as an Amulet and a small dagger.
The scrolls seem to be identical, all of them easily being identified as the Attuned Scroll of Fireball.
After finishing looking over the place (and distributing the loot), you can see that Tarden has dragged the unconscious bodies to the bed in the middle of the room, while Morgan has brought up the discarded equipment you had. Tarden turns to you and says:
"With Vitae dead, this place is safe, so I will stay here, just in case they wake up, while you should report to Sir Yedder and tell him to send someone here with food and drinks, they will need it when their consciousness returns. We will deal with how to proceed next, hopefully, these folk being able to return to a semblance of a normal life. What do you say? DO you have any opinions on how to treat them?"
“What they’ve done is not their fault. It is the fault of this mad old man. I don’t think it’s my call but I hope they are to be returned to their families if they have any and if not I hope they receive assistance in finding labor for a fair wage. Let them fell useful in society.”
Regi then turns toward his companion,
”I found this scroll on the desk before the fight began. There is said to be a large power surge. It might be another wizard. And if it was on his radar... it should probably be on ours. I’d like to take this and report it to Yedder when we return. It could be a lead into our next mission.”
Regi also expresses interest in the dagger, not his typical choice in weapon but didn’t mind using one on this day. He’ll keep the letter opener.

So, what do you say? And what would be the price you would be willing to take?"
