As you travel, Burik stops short and throws his hand out in front of Lucina to indicate she should do the same. He kneels down curiously, angling his shield a bit to illuminate the ground. Something doesn't seem right. He gently moves some ferns out of the way, and then some more...and there it is. A tripwire wrapped in leaves and vines. Lucina looks impressed. Burik looks back to be sure Rigg and Percival see it too, and then he dispels the light on his shield. Everyone starts to scan their surroundings, hoping nobody has spotted them yet.
Percival is looking back-and-forth along the ground with everyone else for a moment before expanding his search - up into the trees. He catches a few flits of movement that look to be songbirds hunting for insects among the leaves. The sun is low, so it's tough to look in the direction they were heading, but up ahead Percival is sure he sees something larger in one of the trees. A human silhouette? It's tough to make out from this distance - it's still 150, maybe 200 feet away through the woods - but it's definitely no songbird. As he continues to look around, he sees something else up in a tree, maybe twenty or thirty feet from the first figure. Was that a pair of legs sticking out from behind the trunk? He carefully looks at everything else nearby, but doesn't notice anything else.
Rigg sinks and crouches behind a tree when Burik points out the wire, close to where they are standing. Adrenaline rushing through him from the surprising morning he tries to keep himself calm and clear his mind. He quickly scans the area. With no noise at all he picks up a stone and gestures throwing it to the others to make noise somewhere else, maybe they can catch whoever, if anyone, is waiting for them off-guard.
OOC: should we move forward over the trip wire if the rock is thrown, or do we have another plan for this tree man?
Lucina looks at him before she looks thoughtful, softly under her breath she mutters. "It might be better to use someone as bait, depending on what exactly is triggered from the trip wire." She kneels down near the trip wire and starts looking to see if anything is connected to the trip wire that will be triggered upon the trip wire being successful.
You can follow the trip wire in either direction for quite awhile, although you can't discern whether or not it's connected to anything else. You don't see end points, nor do you see any potential traps connected to it. It seems like it would be easy enough to just step over without setting anything off.
"I can hold my own in a fight, for a while at least, if you want a distraction. Also I'm not exactly good at moving around quietly..." He moves to position himself behind a tree or large bush to at least partly conceal himself while he talks.
Rigg gives Burik a nod, letting him know that he's in on the plan and he'll be ready to help defend when the trap goes off. He puts his hand on his sword and waits.
Lucina looks at them all before she steps forward. "I'm tripping the trap now. Everyone, be ready in case they move to attack." She says quietly, but loud enough for her comrades to hear before she purposely sets off the trip wire using her foot only and making sure she doesn't fall while doing so.
The wire becomes taut as Lucina steps into it. Immediately, bells start to loudly ring nearby. In the distance, the group can hear more bells being set off.
Percival looks up and sees the silhouettes drop down from the trees. It's hard to follow them through the thick trees, but they seem to be moving closer...then, they disappear. For a moment, the woods are silent.
Suddenly, an arrow thuds into the ground a few feet away from Lucina. The group can see one of the figures about 80 feet away.
Whoa, nice rolls! Others not even needed...

Lucina, roll an investigation check.
Everyone else can continue to react to distant figures and the tripwire.

"Duly noted." Percival says, as one hand unsheathes his sword, while the other begins to crackle with arcane energy.
