Bala spots an older man, who seems to be looking the party over. Gedyr approaches this passer-by and asks about the tower. The man, looks at Gedyr for a bit, and then says:
"Well, that's the Mithraeum, what else can it be... Though you seem like a foreigner, so it figures you would not know... There was a wizard that lived here once, Mithras, he helped found Chilton. Well, this was his town, and he did a lot of good for its denizens. Also, Mithras was very good at teleportation, as well as at preventing unwanted teleportation, but hated intruders and was a very private person. So, when he was building a house for himself, he built this tower, not bothering with an entrance. He would just teleport in and out, while nobody else could go in. The walls look like glass and marble, but are, in reality, quite indestructible, powered by spells and such. Then he went and died, over a century ago. So, now nobody can go in. It has been empty like that ever since Mithras died. Well, not empty, the wizard's treasures and priceless writings are said to be in there, but nobody has been able to go in. For decades, people kept trying to no avail, but now, it's just a decoration of the town. A big, pretty statue, that nobody local pays any attention to. The Baron's father, the previous Baron, actually tried to repurpose it, holding Spring Harvest Festivals around it every year, calling it the Mithraeum of the Spring or something like that. But, beyond that, as I said, the building is quite useless".
Bala's eyes go as wide as dinner plates at the thought of wizard treasure. He will zip right up to the tower and place his paw to it, thinking about how 'indestructible it might be.
"Very Indestructible", Bala deduces, as while the material the tower is made of is indeed nothing to write home about, the protective spells placed upon it are ancient and powerful, with not even the Void Skipper crashing into it at full speed being able to put the tiniest of dents upon the Mithraeum. However, as you know, someone has somehow managed to put the Beacon of Light within, meaning that the tower is indeed accessible, somehow.
"Alright -- Magic be damned! Somebody made it in this thing, so there's a crack some where." He chooses to leave out the part of him taking all the treasure for himself. He turns back to the old man. "Any rules against climbing this thing?"
The old man frowns: "Well, I guess if the Baron's men see you, they will ask you to come down, as you can easily fall to the ground and break something... But, otherwise, this is not a place of reverence or something like that... Mithras was a good guy, but there are no laws prohibiting people from climbing his house... Also, for decades after his death, a lot of adventurers and the like tried to get in, which involved a lot of climbing, digging and a lot worse, so the locals who lived here then became desensitized to that sort of thing. Then again, if you want to get in, I would ask you to reconsider - If nobody managed to go in then, I see reason why you should be able to do so. Though to each their own, I guess".
Bala tries to climb the tower, with his feline agility coming very much in handy. Unfortunately, in his eagerness, he grabbed onto what appeared to be a protruding rock from one of the marble parts of the tower, which, in reality, turned out to have been a large, solidified piece of bird poop. The feces broke off, with Bala falling down as a result. Thankfully, he was able to steady himself in the air, landing on his feet.
"See, that's what I was talking about" Says the old man, looking at Bala disapprovingly.
Meanwhile, Ferdinand tries his luck as well, managing to avoid avian excrement on his way up. Uncharacteristically for a spellcaster, he is indeed able to climb to the very top. The view is brilliant, with pretty much all of the town being visible, as well as some old ruins seen beyond its walls, to the west. The only building of comparable height within Chilton seems to be the Thornhall. However, besides the vista, there seems to be little value in climbing up here. The walls are still indestructible, and the windows are still impossible to see through.
This time, Bala is able to join Ferdinand at the tower's top, actually managing it a bit faster than his friend. Once again, the place is very pretty, but there seems to be little point in climbing the Mithraeum. Also, there is very limited space on the top, so it is not particularly easy to stay still there. If the wind picks up, or if you tire yourselves, there will be considerable risk of falling down, which may indeed lead to injury.
Dihek'nir and Gedyr see the old man's frown change into a look of concern: "Is there something wrong with you people?" He asks.
„Just curious!“ shouts ferdinand. He makes his way to the closest windows and tries to summon herring (in rat form) on the other side of the window (the description of find familiar dies not say i have to see the spot, just that it has to be unoccupied within 30ft)
Ferdinand' attempt, unfortunately, fails. The rat materializes outside the window, on a steeply sloped wall of the tower, and promptly slides down, squeaking in surprise. There is a quiet "thud", as it hits the ground, its body disappearing, as usual for a familiar.
Bala's attempts lead to no real breakthrough as well. However, there is indeed a peculiarity, When he is holding onto the wall to steady himself, the marble walls feel like marble, and the glass parts feel like glass. However, when he is poking at them with his dagger, instead, it feels as if he is hitting something made of metal. As if, when trying to somehow harm the tower, the tower "armors" itself from any attack.
Dihek'nirobserves Bala and Ferdinand doing their thing and comments to the old man, "Yes"
He pulls out a bit of soot and salt and mutters to himself for a good 10 minutes (ritual casting comprehend languages). "Excuse me, sir, I believe I'm going to need to caress this marvel personally." He steps up to it and looks for any kind of scripture or symbols, either visible or tactile.
"Alright, it's definitely an entrainment of sorts. I'm not even trying and it's activating." He looks up to Ferdinand. "I'm thinking of counterspell, but, unless that old dude is lying to us, so did every other self-respecting adventure." He let's out a sigh, then scratches his chin. "Maybe if we found out where the wizard is burried, we could get a clue. I'll do it myself if you ain't into grave robbing."
"I have learned to some magic to help thanks to Ferdinand, however we would need a fairly expensive Pearl, which I do not have. Perhpas we should return to talk with the Monk, as he may know something about this."
Identify is the spell that might help...., however it needs a 100 gp pearl and an owl feather.
Dihek'nir goes round the tower, looking for any scripts or writings. He finds a lot of them, which does offer insight into the life in Chilton. The first four writings he spots read as follows: "Edgor and Maudy, sitting on a tree, KISSING", "Marthok was here","Q+T=L" and "Kill Kiss all the Reds". He also does notice a very pretty chalk drawing of a couple holding hands, though it has been mostly washed away by a recent rain. The insight Dihek'nir now possesses is this: The life in Chilton is quite boring. He does not continue looking at other writings, though he does make sure that there is nothing that was inscribed in the walls as it was being built. Mithras clearly did not use the walls of his house as a parchment to write things upon.
"If you want to know more about Mithras, I'd visit the temple" The old man offers. "It is in the northeast, where the river meets the wall, and it's called the Temple of the Old Finch, or just the Oldfinch, for short. Father Odo should be quite welcoming. And it's where Mithras' urn is located as well, if you are interested in paying your respects..."
Just then, he is interrupted. With a thud, Bala falls down from the top of the Mithraeum. Thankfully, he is lucky enough to fall in the large puddle left by the rain, which somewhat breaks his fall. As a result, he takes 6 damage. Moreover, his ego is quite bruised as well as, well, the Cat is now entirely wet and miserable. The old man is concerned, of course, though you can see on his face, that a smirk formed for a second, but was immediately replaced by concern again. He seems to have thought of a joke, but immediately changed his mind and said nothing, as this did not seem like good timing. He, alongside other party members, runs to Bala, asking "Are you all right? Have you broken anything? If you need healing, my shop is nearby, and I have a lot of medicinal herbs, so I can help you".
OOC: Rolled fall damage wrong, but let's stick with it.
