Jasa Redbrooke? the Governor responds. Well, if Chauntea is merciful, she will be safe and well out of this business. As to who these attackers are, dragon cultists we believe, though that's a guess based on... well... the obvious. He points at the sky. We've no time to capture and interrogate one of the bastards, not while my people are out there in danger.
And there's no time for pleasantries tonight, Soar Jestalle. He looks the group over. You've taken some wounds, but you look in good shape. Are your people fit to fight, Paladin Jestalle? I've been sending small groups of my guards out through a hidden entrance to the keep, looking for survivors in the town and smuggling them here to safety. I would send your group to do the same, if you are willing.
Jalt would lower to a knee and salute Governor Nighthill. Rhogar of Clan Jalt here to assist you and your men in anything you may need. How did this situation come to pass?

We know next to nothing, Rhogar of Clan Jalt, Nighthill responds, giving you a formal bow, and motioning for you to rise. Perhaps two hours ago, as the sun was close to setting, the dragon flew over the town. We thought it might pass by, just another strange, wondrous sight of the Realms. But alas, it circled round and blasted the keep with its breath. And then the ground forces were upon us; they seemed to come from north and west, for the most part. From what my soldiers have observed, they are mostly concerned with looting, and where they kill, they do so for sport, rather than with any strategic goal in mind. In many regards they look and behave like common thugs and bandits.
Still, I wish I knew more. I have more questions than I like. First, however, we must survive the night, and make sure our citizens do so too.
Jalt rises to his feet. Yes of course. If you will have us help, I'm sure my associates would be more than willing. Have your men show us to this hidden entrance so that we may go forth and try to save as many people as we can. Jalt pauses for a moment and looks to his party mates. We have been placed here for a reason, Bahamut has put me here to help this people. We have been tested already but I sense that you all here to help. So we shall triumph.

Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
That is good to hear. The Governor seems to draw spirit from your dedication to assist, and is about to speak again. However, he is interrupted by a commotion in the ward below; a dwarf with messy red hair, wearing light armour and carrying a torch, comes running into view; Raiders in the keep, he shouts. The Sally Port is breached. Guards, to the Sally Port now!
There is panic in the ward, with the unarmed civilians screaming and running away, unsure of what direction will carry them to safety. Guards from the ward and the walls begin to head towards the dwarf, but the Governor takes charge and calls out to the guards on the wall: Hold your positions. There is still a dragon to face. He points to four guards. You four, go with Escobert. They salute briskly and head off quickly down the stone steps.
Finally, he turns to you. That dwarf is Escobert the Red, my Castellan. The Sally Port is a small gate on the side of the keep; it must be either sealed or collapsed if we are to have any safety tonight. Please, follow the Castellan and aid him where you can.
Soar wishes the governor well, but not before asking his arrow reserves and how many bows he has for dragon repellant. After Escobert gives his report, she turns to the dwarf and is already moving with him to the sally port.
"Escobert, I'm Soar. I wish we were meeting under better circumstances but sometimes Kelemvor doesn't tell me his plan until later and usually it will still turn out well even if he doesn't. I've practiced repelling assaults in close quarters a few times in the Dreadfort training compound - we can do this."
She is ready to follow the castellan to wherever he directs her and readies a javelin to throw the second she sees a kobold or one of these dragon cult members.
Exhausted by the dash into the castle, Elspeth stayed silent as Soar queried the guard for information. She followed her companions to the top of the parapets, to governor Nighthill. On reflex, she looked down at the town, winced as she saw the destruction that had befallen it, and turned her gaze away. She directs a small, rigid jerk of her head as way of greetings towards the governor.
"I'll be glad to help." SHe assured firmly, but the words were barely out of her mouth when the cries of the civilans drowned them out. She spares a cursory look down into the courtyard, then follows Escobert to the sally port.
"I'm Elspeth."She manages to get out as she heads towards the sally port. "Pleasure to meet you. What's wrong with the Sally Port? How do we go about sealing it? Are there locks, bolts, already in place?"
Soar, the Governor shakes his head. We've ammunition a plenty, but no time to discus that now. Make haste, if you will. The group follows the four guards down the stone stairs and meets up with the red-haired dwarf in the middle of the ward, scared folk pressing into the walls around them and looking on.
Pleased to meet you, all of you, the dwarf replies, now follow me. As the party jogs after him, he gives you a briefing. We've guards enough to hold, don't you worry. With these reinforcements, I mean, and he nods to the four guards that are accompanying you. This wasn't a co-ordinated attack from the bastards. I reckon it was a scouting party that got a little ambitious and over-extended itself. What we really need is someone to seal the gate again; that means to get into the guard room where the portcullis is controlled. Somehow they forced it open.
With Escobert leading the way, you enter into a small yard where a small battle is underway; a variety of kobolds and humans face off against the human, halfling and gnomish guards of the keep. You can see the Sally Port ahead; a small gate that has been opened, and a metal portcullis that appears to have been lowered, but then forced up about three feet, so that enemies can duck and enter below it. Escobert directs you to a passageway that he says leads the guard room above the Sally Port.
As you make your way along the passageway and up the stairs, you come to the door to the guard room; the door appears to be broken and is blocking entry. More urgently, the enemy has managed to get some guards of its own to prevent anyone from entering and lowering the portcullis. Before you, you see two kobolds and what appears to be a very small dragon; you recognise it as a drake.
Everyone roll initiative please.
The passageway before the doorway is narrow; with only space for two to stand next to each other. Let me know which two will be in front, and which two behind.
Breena, though she had good intentions of staying focused, found herself distracted by a small flower growing through the cracks of the wall. It was up higher than she could reach and took some effort for her to grab, but it felt like a sign of good luck so she managed to struggle her way up to grab it. By the time she'd done so, the group had finished their conversation with the governor and were on their way to... somewhere. She trotted forward to catch up and took her place behind Jalt as if she'd been there the whole time and was totally prepared for whatever they were doing. "Oh, well... they don't look very friendly, do they?"
The drake attempts to dodge away from the suddenly-appeared flames: DEX save 22. It does so with impressive skill and dexterity, and is unharmed; the fire remains though; the kobolds look alarmed and shield their faces from the heat; yipping quietly to each other.
Both Kobolds squeal, but only briefly; the blast of cold energy kills them outright. The drake appears to dodge the worst of the damage and does not look badly hurt. Also, the frosty blast destroys Elspeth's Create Bonfire.
With the kobolds gone, only the drake remains to defend the door; without its handlers, it looks confused, but decides that it did not like being blasted with cold air and goes in to attack Jalt with a bit from its vicious, snapping mouth:
Attack: 10 Damage: 5
Clang!!! The teeth bite down on Jalt's shield, leaving some impressive dents, but doing no harm.
Breena and Soar are up, in any order. The drake is the only remaining opponent, standing in front of Jalt.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Soar is surprised to see the breath of her friend Jalt turn so cold, and to such a lethal effect. She walks forward and rotates around (two squares east and one north) to see if the tail of this tiny dragon is at all more vulnerable with its head focused on Jalt's shield. She hefts her warhammer and takes a swing.
