So I am a strictly mobile user, meaning I do all my online activities through my phone and occasionally sit down to use my hotspot or public WiFi for stuff not compatible with the mobile format. With that being said I have a huge interest in ‘pickup and play’ style of gaming, or play by post.
I’m interested in running a homebrew campaign with both fantasy and sci-fi elements. I like to blend genres so it might not keep to those particular themes in some places. A disclaimer: this setting is something I’ve worked on for 15 years. I own it, considering it intellectual property. I suppose that works as a copyright.
The Setting: Gods-light Cavern
Crumbling records indicate we left the surface when the moon shattered and the Everdark was released on the world. Old gods from the deep were called and we followed as they burrowed down, leading us to safety from the sickly light of the moon. The Deeping Gods carved for us cities from rock, forming vast caverns for us to live. Children of the Stars blanket our new sky, a tapestry of night. The Solus King and Lunal Queen travel the sky and bring light to the darkness, a sun and moon to replace what we lost. Their celestial bodies burn with the Gods-light and keep the Everdark at bay.
—
So this all takes place underground. There are HUGE caverns that contain everything from forest to wasteland, cities to hamlets, some are overrun with monsters as the Everdark slowly creeps in and taints the land and some are completely empty or home to stranger things. The main location is the titular Gods-light Cavern, home to the City that Never Sleeps. Think Game of Thrones style, but the size of New York. It’s bounded by a wall outside which is farmland that eventually gives way to borderlands and outlying towns and a Wild West frontier as you near the Edgelands.
While the population knows they live underground that’s all gone by the wayside, the Surface is almost a fictional place now, a story to tell children.
What material is allowed?
Glad you asked. You can use whatever published sourcebooks are available to you, including Critical Role content and Playtest material. I’ll allow homebrewed stuff so long as you run it past me first. I am not against making up some fancy items or modifying subclasses if you want to get deep into it.
Ideally I’d like the max party size to be 5 characters but I can totally start with a single person if they’re ready to go. We can game backstory or ‘prequel’ scenes to prep for the main game, or we can just jump right into it.
I may have more guidelines to post if there is interest and people ask questions I haven’t answered. I’m sure there will be many.
I am interested, I think the undergound concept is very cool. What statgeneration method are we using and what level? How exactly does the sci-fi element play into the game?
So the first families that follows the gods brought advanced tech with them. Some of this tech was terraforming equipment. Outside the City wall in the farmlands is a well-known giant, an overgrown robot essentially. All that remains is the vague shape of a metal head. Inside the City there are magitech things to facilitate transportation and communication. There are slums that don’t have power, poor districts where a line tied to the Sending Grid is considered a luxury, a telephone sort of. Stuff like that.
Class: Druid, Circle of Spores once we hit level 2.
Background: Outlander, basically thinking he and his tribe live in the outskirts cultivating life from the rot and decay of the outer limits of civilization. I would be happy to work with you as to what event would bring Throslokre out of the outskirts and into the adventure.
Oh and we can work with the backgrounds. Noble would be someone from the minor/major families, soldier would typically be a wall guard or border scout where monsters creep in from neighboring caverns or occasionally burst up from the below. Outlander comes from that wild west area or the Northern Wastes where Solus and Lunal don’t shine...or anything really. It’s a complex ecosystem.
4d6 drop lowest, made a quick edit to the first post. As far as rules go, nothing noteworthy. I’ll make sure you all know where I’m the world you come from depending on the character you choose. If you give generic backstory like ‘lives by the sea or a lakeside village’ or ‘was a farmer whose crop helps supply the City’ we can work with that.
Backstory: As a soldier of the City That Never Sleeps and being a creature that never sleeps himself I was well suited for guard duty on the outer gates. Keeping watch and dealing with any creature that might come out of the shadows or from underneath my superiors loved the fact that they had a soldier that never needed any downtime. I enjoyed my position but with the constant vigilance at the gates staring into the unknown I felt it was time to bring the fight to the creatures outside the walls.
Wow this is great! I didn’t expect to go to sleep and find six characters waiting for me. I’m putting this thread into private, will make a campaign thread and link that here later today so look for that.
Actually, it isn't that much in a text-based game. There's not a lot of DM stress in PbP.
Yeah, I’m used to roleplaying with a dozen people but generally only about four or five interacted with each other. And I have three children below 6 and work 12 hour shifts, lol. I like to keep things a little on the lighter side.
I’m not sure if I have this tagged right, I want it to operate as a sort of Out of Character thread while I also create a new In Character campaign thread for the actual game. At the same time right now I’m comfortable with the amount of players so I don’t want any more.
Question: Are you all comfortable with sharing backgrounds with each other or do you want to roleplay that in game or...? I’m going through PM’s right now but it could be easier to do all the hashing out in this thread before I make the other one.

I am good either way, looking forward to the adventures that await us.
Are you going to create a campaign on here as well and invite the players?
