As is well known, once a year, a few weeks before the spring solstice, a festival is held in honor of the goddess Sune, celebrating love and beauty and beseeching her blessings throughout the year. A little more than a century ago, the Sunite priestesses received a message from their goddess: On this day, she would be most pleased if the people of the Realms would honor her by expressing their love and affection to one another, spending time with those they care for, and exchanging small tokens of admiration.
The relative prosperity of each populace alongside the character and number of dining and drinking establishments affect the spirit and tenor of Sune's Day celebrations. For most, the evening consists of a tavern meal, music, and the treat of a finer wine or ale, with perhaps the exchange of a small present, either hand-crafted by the giver or carefully selected from a merchant or artisan.
Adventurers strive to map out their travels in such a way that they can pass through a small town or larger urban center for Sune's Day to enjoy the late-winter decorations of hardy flowers and beautiful vines and to leave candles or small gifts at the temples to hasten the coming of spring.
It has been a slow start to the career of your adventuring party, and you find yourselves at the edge of a small town just after midday before the Sune's Day celebrations begin in earnest. You are all somewhat tired from your journey but also energized by the promise of the evening ahead. Making a few inquiries around town in the late afternoon, many recommendations point you in the direction of the village inn, The Lovers' Nook, where you can share a meal and be graced by the finest bards the countryside has to offer. Without a better offer, your party settles on dinner (and maybe dancing) at The Lovers' Nook.
OOC: Take a moment to introduce your characters to each other before we explore the town. You have only been an adventuring party for a short time, so feel free to also come up with the way your characters met and why they might be traveling together.
Zelra is a half elven woman with no notable or unique features. Brown eyes, brown hair, tanned skin and of normal height, you could describe her and you would be describing half the population in a city. She isn't noticeable, just how she likes it. She dons normal leather armor and a brown hooded cloak. A shortsword hangs from her belt on the left and two daggers are sheathed on the right. A shortbow is slung over her shoulder as well as a quiver of arrows.
As the group makes their way to the Lover's Nook, she lets out a groan. "Gods... Couples everywhere. Can someone scoop my eyes out? I don't know how much longer I can take all this."
(OOC: Maybe we were hired to escort someone and their goods to the town and now we're chilling after completing the job?)
Otger is a well rounded middle aged human. He has graying hair, brown eyes, and a pale complexion. He wears his vestments proudly, displaying his god Helm for all to see. He is very well mannered and does what he can to help those in need everywhere he goes. Be that beggars on the streets, sick in need of medicine, or simply the lonely looking for company. He wears his well maintained chain mail with a mace at his side and a shield on his back. His several pouches and pack filled with all things a priest may need at any moment. In spite of his vestments displaying Helm's symbol for all to see, so does his shield, as well as the pendant on his necklace.
"Let the lovers be, this is a celebration for them so let them enjoy it!" Otger replies. "A lovers union is one of the most sacred things on this world of ours, no need to shame it." He beams with delight as he looks upon the streets filled with displays of Sune. "And who knows, maybe you'll catch someone's eye at this Lover's Nook and join the public display!"
OOC: Escorting would be easiest, if we are all agreed we need to figure out where we are taking the goods. Or if "the goods" are actually a person? Maybe someone who simply wanted to ensure safe passage to this city?
Delanra walks alongside Otger and rarely would one see such a stark difference. The yuan-ti walks with a languid grace, her lithe figure moves in such a way that the eye sees curves that are barely there. Her olive skin is a shade or two greener than you would normally see on a human, the hue a little richer, and on very close inspection - should you be lucky enough to get that close - then the slightest hint of fine scaling can be seen beneath the surface. Her attire befits her manner, a finely made travelling gown of deep crimson with gold trim, long slits up the skirts that allow her legs unrestricted movement and have the fringe benefit of catching the eye of an onlooker or two; the outfit is accompanied by understated jewellery upon various part of the lady.
"Love is a pretty illusion. Those that believe they are in love, in my experience, fall foul of an affliction where their brain stops working properly." As if to prove a point, Delanra smiles and winks at a passerby, taking a slightly longer stride to expose her leg a little more. She watches the most predictable of reactions, before turning away in complete disregard and continuing in her flat, casual tone, "I don't need some 'Lover's Nook' to catch an eye. Men are driven by their loins, and women by their imagination."
(OoC - Escort job sounds fine. Maybe a caravan now parked outside of town, or a person who has been seen to their chosen destination. Happy with either of those hooks.)
"Not too different from Greengrass, to be honest - even if they are somewhat wasting their time. The offering or present needs to be made to your goddess, not to one another." Ulmria remarks, observing the celebrations from the same distance. Her tabard-covered mail clinks with each of her short steps, and the once-vibrant cloth draped over the steel links has faded and grown tattered, but that is to be expected of such a quickly-pilfered piece. Her weighty russet hair is thickly braided in dwarven fashion, kept from falling below her shoulders with deft weaving. On her back, a circular shield so broad so as to nearly cover her body is worn, the hammered, curving steel dented and scratched from wear, and a vicious-looking blunted flail is hung from her belt, causing the cracked leather to bend from the weight. Exposed from beneath her arms and armor, thick, pale skin and defined musculature carries the aforementioned gear with ease.
"But for you two - I am of a similar mind with Otger, Sharindlar - or Moradin forbid - the Human counterpart Sune should be gracing your lives. This is not something to mock." She rebukes towards Delanra in particular. "And forgoing any sort of companionship is not enlightened, it's downright lonely, come off it!"
The entrance to the small town is clustered with residential housing, but the scenery opens up when you reach the center square. A large fountain rests in the middle of this open area, atop which rests a great statue of a female human cleric. A row of shops stands to the south, bearing a sign that denotes it as Magistrate's Lane, and a series of pop-up booths and stalls have been erected at the far side of the square. A makeshift sign reads Zendow Market. The road to The Lovers' Nook winds past this market toward a wooded area at the far end of town.
OOC: There are a few hours to kill before dinnertime. Would anyone like to explore around town? Feel free to split up while exploring and meet up at The Lovers' Nook later.
"Ah, Ulmira, you make a good point. Companionship is something that none should forgo, it can be most pleasurable and helps relax the body. That does not mean that companionship and love are the same things, for the two can certainly be achieved without the other." Delanra's face is passive as she talks about topics that arouse the interest of most beings. "Mayhap, we have a chance to browse the town before we dine? I would be doubtful for a good bathhouse but there may be an arcanist or two with wares and literature."
(OoC - Delanra is always keen to look for scroll vendors or sources of arcanum that she can learn from. I'm good with a little local exploration vefore heading to the Nook.)
Zelda whistles as Delnara shows off her legs, giving her a thumbs up. "Nice."
At the suggestion to browse the town a little, Zelda shrugs."I'm alright. Don't really have anything I need and honestly don't really want to have to see all-" She waves her hands wildly, gesturing to the all the couples around them. "- this for any longer than I need to. I'll head to the inn first, scope it out or something. See you guys in a couple of hours. I promise not to get drunk." She draws a cross over her heart with one hand and in the other, she crosses her fingers, to show she really doesn't intend on keeping the promise, before swinging her head back and cackling like a mad woman. "As if."
"Well, don't enjoy yourself too much then!" Otger says as Zelra leaves. "I myself would like to go show some appreciation to Sune, so I will seek out a temple and then browse the market before heading to the Lover's Nook. I'll meet you all there tonight!" With that, Otger departs, heading toward the nearest temple.
"Not quite sure how you would achieve companionship without some sort of relationship." Ulmira muses when Delanra departs. Left alone with those thoughts - as the rest has already departed to satisfy their own whims or errands, Ulmira decided to humor the human event. Perhaps she could find a trinket for when she returned home - if only a souvenir. She sets off to see what was on sale at Zendow market.
Zelra departs toward the opposite end of town, winding her way through narrow streets.
Walking through Magistrate's Lane, Delanra finds the town rather devoid of the arcane; a pet shop, a bookshop, and a haberdashery that has been converted into a row of artisans and craftpersons fill the lane, but nothing of a magical sort. She does, however, find Bubbles & Brine, a lovely bathhouse that catches her eye. In honor of Sune's Day, they offer a free hour-long soak and massage.
The small town holds no temple, but asking around reveals to Otger that most pay respect to their deities through the statue in the center of the town square. The human cleric woman depicted by the statue is Lur'ira, the patroness of the town. Wandering through the market brings him past Home Sweet Home, and unassuming pet shop, and A Good Turn, a quaint bookshop. Further down the street is a general store.
Ulmria sets off for the Zendow Market, which contains one large open-air stall, and a series of hastily set-up smaller booths. The open-air stall is Lenora's Tallow and More, run by a middle-aged gnome woman, who "specializes in candles, incense, and specialty matches for all your Sune's Day needs". The smaller booths have been set up in honor of the holiday, offering delights to locals and visitors such as fine jewelry, harvest seeds, fortune tellers, a kissing booth, feats of strength and speed, and small magic tricks.
Otger approaches the statue at the center of town, calmly pushing through the crowd when he can without causing too much of a disturbance to the rest gathered around it. Once at the statues' base, he says, "Oh Sune, your blessings are felt by all here at this festival, please accept these celebrations as adoration for what you provide to us." He then places a single gold coin at the statue's base as an offering, then turns away and heads back to the shops.
Otger continues his exploration of the small town with nothing but wonder and joy at every sight. He says hello to all who would hear him as he passes them by. He becomes absorbed watching the little critters at Home Sweet Home. "I'm sure many of you will find a new home today!" Otger states as he moves on to A Good Turn. "Well, that's a clever name." Otger says aloud to himself. He then carries onward to the general store in search of a healer's kit.
OOC: I have used 1 gold as an offering and if buying a healer's kit is successful, another 5 gold on that.
Delanra makes the most of her time at Bubbles & Brine, luxuriating in the feel of fresh, warm water, and letting the tension and aches of their most recent travels slowly fade away. It is refreshing to find such an establishment in the town, and though she was unable for find anything to further her search into her arcane powers, she has to admit to herself that the massage was probably the better of the options.
After her time is up, she is in no great rush to meet up with the others, but dresses steadily, making sure that her outfit is clean and sitting right. She meticulously polishes her jewellery on the towels, before exiting the baths, and retracing her steps to the main market thoroughfare. Knowing where at least one of her compatriots will ve, she avoids lingering in the street and heads towards the Lover's Nook to meet up with their hopefully still coherent half-elf.
Zelra spends a few hours listening in to others conversations as well as engaging in some of her own, trying to get any rumours, gossips and news about the town. She makes sure to find out who's who in the town as well - prominent figures, wealthy families and maybe even if there are any underground networks in the town. She happily indulges in ale and wine, slowly getting drunk over the hours as she waits for the others to arrive.
(OOC - I just realised I probably should've asked this but is the Lover's Nook a tavern+inn or just mainly an inn with a place to eat? If the latter, then Zelra would look for a nearby tavern before stumbling back to the inn.)
The pet shop is filled with patrons examining a new litter of wolf puppies that are in need of homes. The young half-elf running the shop looks at Otger with eager blue, gold-flecked eyes, holding one out as if to ask "Won't you help me find them a home?"
Tucked away in a corner of the town is the bookstore, a small stone structure with a green banner. Its unassuming stone facade invites Otger in, scores and scores of books greeting his eyes, crammed all about the shelves, as the door with a tinkling bell closes behind him. A beautiful elven woman with long chestnut brown hair and bright red spectacles stands on tiptoes to see him over a bookshelf and extends a warm greeting. She glides over, only bumping into one stack along the way. Before Otger can say anything at all, she excitedly presents him with the newest installment in Madame Ludviga's engrossing saga, Parapets of Pain and Passion, explaining that they've nearly sold out.
The general store is running low on healer's kits, but is happy to sell more of their stock.
OOC: Healer's kit has been added to Otger's inventory. 6 gold pieces have been removed.

The bathhouse is quite relaxing and refreshing for Delanra, who now smells lovely. In honor of the holiday, she is given a bouquet of flowers on her way out before heading toward The Lovers' Nook.

Zelra winds her way through the streets, easily finding The Lovers' Nook Inn and Tavern. A line stretches out from the front of the inn, small groups of two, three, and four pressed together, eagerly chatting over their plans for the evening and generally expressing their thankfulness for the time spent together. They wave to passersby they know well, occasionally dashing across the street to exchange a hug or well wishes. As long as the line is, Zelra can already see a mass of individuals from the marketplace heading this way to add to it.
Zelra huffs as she sees the long line. "Maybe it was a good idea to come early after all..." She simply crosses her arms and waits for her turn to get a table for the group.
(OOC: Do I manage to pick up any information from the people in the line? Just trying to get to know the town a little better.)
Otger is quite entertained at the displays all around town. After purchasing what he wanted he heads back in the direction of Home Sweet Home. Otger approaches the young half elf. "Well, what fine wolf pups you have there, can you show me what other pets you have available, perhaps something smaller?" He looks about the shop to see what other critters they have displayed around. "I'm sure with the amount of travelers around you must be finding several homes for these wonderful pets!"
