I'm curious as to how many of you are doing multiple campaigns at once and if you are how do you keep your mindset separate for each character?
Im only doing this one but its hard for a dm to do multiple unless there arent many characters in then and its fairly simple content. My best advice is to go real in depth about there backgrounds, the more you have on it and the more you emerse yourself into who they are and what makes them that way, the easier it should be to switch mindsets
I can understand getting the backstory right even with the few characters I have come up with coming up with a backstory has been difficult because I'm trying to not go for the overused tropes that you see in movies and tv shows, but I imagine some of that is bound to happen.
Maybe, alot of times even the simplest concept can lead to a deep background. The characters actions and reactions to emotional state explain alot about a character as well. Beings are complicated so most of the time you cant just stick a label on a character that says they are stubborn and impulsive because it usually goes alot more in depth. Like how there moods can change or events can happen to change how they look at certain actions they might take. You woke up and found 20 bucks, you have been in a depression lately so this really got you feeling like the whole world isnt out to get you. Instead you go about your day with a smile and etc..
There is nothing inherently bad about tropes - they are recognizable, they work and others know how to react to them :)
I am doing just this one campaign. But I guess running several characters is like watching 2 (3, 4...) TV shows - you can still follow the story and not get mad while waiting for the next episode :)
P.S. My notification system here is a bit crazy two - informing me about old posts and ignoring new.
P.P.S. Out of curiosity: are we (you, Zephyrethe) still recruiting? The campaign promises to be huge! :)
If you are a newer player tropes are fine, but if you have been playing since Reagan was in office you can piss off with the rogue that steals from everyone or the bard that is trying to hump anything that slows down enough for him to catch it, IMO that is just lazy playing. For us beginners, it helps us evolve our characters and their creation. You know I have never played a rogue before, but Gary Gygax (rip) was playing with us and his rogue was a selfish steal from everyone it would be a little tired.
Blue Bayou, I guess I never thought of seeing as a TV show-esque way since your playing one of the characters so if I was to play say an evil warlock in one game and then move over to another game and play a lawful paladin I suppose I would just have to find a way to think about each character in their own way, but I am not planning on doing that yet since I just started getting into this.
And Yeah the notification system is definitely messed up because I logged on last night and nothing was in the notification part saying nothing had changed in a while, but people had posted then this morning there were like 14+ notifications making me think something big was happening...nope just everything hitting at once.

Cusm, I can see that too. I definitely want to make any of my characters feel like they would be believable in their actions/reactions so I will likely be building and adding to my back story to flesh it out better.

Im not necessarily recruiting but if u have a friend wanting to join or something im fine with that
I just wish i had as much time to do stuff like that as i used to as young adult XD. Life is overwhelming
I can understand that currently the only reason I have time is because my shift at work is only on the weekends so it gives me lots of downtime unfortunately next week I will be switching shifts so it'll be just as hectic plus with a 2 year old running around you get busy

No, no friends, sorry. I only asked because the topic still has tag "Recruiting". And do not worry about pacing - I suspect we are all here working and most of us have kids, time is indeed limited and everyone understands it. :)
Re doing multiple characters I agree fleshing out a backstory helps as it can give your character some different triggers or motivations when coming up to certain points in the story.

For cyst: I made a mistake and ringed Cyst by the campaign, as soon as I can I will rejoin because I may have screwed up the character, luckily I have a backup
I just read the comments that have been posted since my last post on this thread and it made me smile since the only thing I have to add is that I share the general vibe. I also agree with each recommendation that has been given to the new or "kind of new" RPG players. I've also got problems with the notifications, so I look a couple times a day refreshing the page instead of waiting for notifications now... I'm also glad to see that we seem to be in an understanding group of people. If things continue the way they are, I agree, this campaign, but also our interactions, show great promises!
I would just add a final thought. Feel no pressure at all, you are free to use the style you prefer, but here: I recommend that you (everyone), get as in character as possible. A play by post is a great opportunity for roleplay since we have time to think and compose. Take this opportunity to create something, to experience a side of yourself or to give some life to a fantasy of yours. I would thus suggest that you narrate your story at the first person, since when you're not writing in OCC, you ARE your character. Also, do not limit yourself to ability checks. Describe your thoughts, your feeling, your actions as they appear in your head. Not too much (there's no use in describing the exact way your fingers bend to cast a certain spell ;-) ), but enough to promote immersiveness. Again, this is D&D and you are free to play it as you wish. I'm only giving what I think are good advices to get the most out of the play by post format. Feel free to correct me and provide your own suggestions.
Have a nice day everyone!

Everone try to go to notification settings and uncheck the box that says to receive all notifications in bulk. This might fix it
