(Ooc: I cant quite track which worgs have taken which hits... I think the top worg is dead or almost dead, the middle one is hurt, and the lower undamaged? )
Tarja calls upon the plants to entangle the two worgs further south.
The earth itself will root you abominations in place.
OOC: I *believe* that at this point, the two worgs further south are definitely still alive. I think I can only reach two with a 20-ft square anyway, unless I rotate it weirdly. And maybe the top one's dead already? Not sure.
Both wargs make DC13 strength save or be restrained. I'll put the difficult terrain mostly on the other side of them, so that Zeke and the soldiers don't run into it. If they're restrained, we get advantage to attack them and they get disadvantage on dex saves and they can't move.
Arvel blasts the center worg once again with his bolts of energy, the beast looking worse for wear as Tarja's vines erupt from the soil and tug at it. It somehow pulls free just in time to witness Zeke approach and slash upwards with a mighty sweep of his kwando, cleaving the beast's chest, neck and jaw wide open for a killing blow. The southern most worg is looking much healthier as it continues its charge, but falls prey to Tarja's magic all the same as its legs buckle under the raw power of nature's grasp. The soldiers take advantage and hurry forward while still maintaining their defenses for the most part, stabbing at the downed worg with spears (for a total of 14 damage).
To the north Ethan covers Fae as both send more fire streaking across the field at the panicked goblins. The goblin still in the fight ducks Fae's blast but watches one from Ethan fly past and finish off his friend, and burst of fire to the head once again downing the goblin with a very brief cry of pain. Meanwhile Elra calls down radiance once again, striking the northern most worg and singeing it's side, the smell of dirty, burnt fur now emanating from two of the worgs.
The pair of hobgoblins look back at their leader with uncertainty before drawing back and firing at the advancing soldiers, but a call of arrows is heard and shields are readied. All the hobgoblins achieve is the sound of their arrows clanging off of the shield wall. The two small goblins nearby achieve much the same result attacking the shields, and Fae's target to the north gives up at the fiery death of his companion and begins to flee through the tall grass back towards the main group. Not having achieved much of anything with their long ranged assault thus far, both goblins and hobgoblins start to look at each other nervously.
The most immediate threat at the moment remains the northern charging worg, despite Elra's blasts, as it finally reaches the group. Zeke having moved up to finish the other beast, the worg keeps charging forward and chooses Tarja as it's target, leaping for an attack. It crashes into Tarja's shield and tries to bite at the dwarf's head and neck from there but its teeth find no purchase.
These poor, poor bad guys are having no luck against your AC's today...
- Goblin-2 is dead thanks to Ethan's bolts.
- The northest most worg is on Tarja and has taken Elra's sacred flames.
- The center worg is dead thanks to a group effort and Zeke's killing blow.
- The bottom worg is down, injured and restrained thanks to Tarja's magic and the opportunistic soldiers.
(We're back at the bottom for Arvel and then top of the order.)
Map:
Zoomed in map this time, so you can see the health bars on the enemies here. Note that the center one is dead, I didn't properly adjust that bar, but note the skull and crossbones.
Please refer to the previous map for other distances. The only change really is that G2 is dead to the north, and the other has dashed almost directly east, running away from the flames of the wizard and artificer.
Noticing the worg that has broken through the shield wall, Arvelcurls his fingers like a claw as his eyes glow golden. A band of golden energy appears around the beast's head.
"Olet kirottu!"
The charlatan then blasts at it with another bolt of force.
"Keihäs!"
Action: Hex, I'll choose WIS as the attribute effected.
With the worg in her face and her concentration occupied with controlling the plants restraining the far worg, Tarja resorts to mundane means to defend herself. With a growl, she draws her scimitar and slashes at the worg in front of her.
(attack: 5, damage 8)
(hehe she should stick to spells maybe! Well, when those plants are done with their thing and the far worg either dies or escapes)
Ethan, watching the far goblin turn and bolt off into the night, hears the closer worg fail to connect with Tarja.
He turns in time to see Arvel let loose another blast in its direction, and decides to join him.
Moving south to stand near Arvel, Ethan takes aim at the worg attacking Tarja, and lets off another bolt of fire.
Move: South 4 squares
Action: Cast Fire Bolt at worg1: Attack: 23 (includes Bless) - Damage: 19 fire damage
(Edit: ok so I wasn't sure if this would happen, including Bless in attack roll directly, but it has, that was not a crit, the damage should be 9, first rolled damage die. I will have to keep the bless roll separate in future.)
Fae would look to Ethan with a nod of gratitude, appreciating the protection. In his shadows, she'd watch the battle scenes unfold around her. Everyone was successfully taking on their opponents.
After Ethan takes his steps south, Fae will move to the east behind the guards, her eyes fixed on the fleeing goblin. She'd cast another Fire Bolt.
While Tarja struggles to even raise her scimitar against the large beast, Arvel and Elra blast it with arcane and divine energy respectively. It is once again the mighty Zeke however that comes in from behind and skewers the worg for the final blow, freeing Tarja from its clutches. Zeke is rewarded with an arrow in the shoulder, however, as one of the hobgoblins finally has some luck (8 damage).
Meanwhile Fae finally has some success, and although it is only a glancing blow that burns the goblin's shoulder it is enough to remind the creature of his companion's fate and send him running.
Ethan is about to join in on the group effort of assisting Tarja when Zeke beats him too it, so he looks to his right and takes aim at the entangled worg, it's hulking body visible over the top of the soldiers. It's back goes up in flames as it struggles again Tarja's spell and the onslaught of the spearmen. The beast makes one last effort to break free but is put down by the soldiers for its effort.
The remaining enemies are looking anything but threatening at this point as one goblin flees and even the leader mounts his worg and turns halfway around towards fleeing east, looking at all of you with a long stare. His eyes seem to be particularly focused on Zeke as he points his greatsword toward the imposing tiefling. The two goblins to the east keep moving closer to their leader and make halfhearted attempts at firing their bows, not even reaching the line of soldiers.
The soldiers from Leilon begin to cheer and raise their spears in the air and their captains shouts to a few to check their flanks, he and a few of the men shifting their shield angles and moving back toward the wagons, horses, and oxen. They have the courtesy to leave two men to cover Fae, however. Meanwhile there are two sighs from one of the wagons as Finnan and Farnin apparently almost pass out on the wooden planks from the stress of the ordeal.
Took the liberty of reassigning Ethan's attack because of the order here. He'd actually have advantage on the attack if you'd like to roll once more just to try for the crit, but it would only be for RP reasons at best since it is now dead. No big deal either way.
Vincent begins flying back to Elra, "I... I think so? I hope so..." Elra watches the hobgoblins movements. "Normally goblin culture values power. If we overpower them they might decide to leave us alone..."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Zeke reaches down and helps Tarja back to her feet and then spins back to face the enemy - only to find them fleeing the battlefield.
He roars a massive guttural, primal challenge (Thaumaturgy), holding his blade aloft and extending his wings to their full span, watching until the Hobgoblin leader is out of sight.
Satisfied that the immediate threat has passed, Zeke turns to see the two soldiers standing close to the injured Fae. Still in the embrace of his battle trance, he closes with the spearman in long swift strides eyes, black as night, nostrils flaring, wings folded back into a protective envelope.
He says nothing, but his body language brooks no debate. They either fall back from his injured comrade or face Zeke's full fury.
Intimidation if needed: with Advantage 14 without Advantage 3
OOC: Not that it is likely to matter - but was the 8 points halved already do to Zeke's rage or should it 4 on my sheet?
Ethan, and Vincent for that matter, see no signs of hidden enemies amidst the moonlit and slightly scorched grasslands.
The two soldiers covering Fae look scared and confused and quickly stumble back away from the approaching Zeke.
In the distance the hobgoblin leader turns his gaze away when Zeke does and rides off on the last remaining worg. The other two hobgoblins silently turn and trot off as well, while the goblins more frantically call for them all to wait up as they scramble away.
(Only 4 points of damage to Zeke, I'll let you have the satisfaction of halving it when appropriate.)
Fae would make her way forward, taking a spot beside Tarja, and a bit behind Zeke.
She’d look to the tiefling ahead of her, “How are you doing Zeke?” And she’d look to Tarja to her right. “And you Tarja?”
It was times like these she wish she could cure wounds. Maybe she’d be better at it... and be able to contribute more. Fae would scoff to herself.
The fire, the blood, goblins... it reminder her of a dream... Fae would stare down the field towards the foes. She’d want to take more steps forward to get closer, if it were safe to do so, to see if she could make out anything of interest about these goblinoids.
As Fae speaks to him, Zeke seems to shake himself and his eyes revert to their normal light grey and his breathing returns to normal. He looks at the soldiers once more, hard, but gives them a respectful nod as he sees them maintaining their distance and keeping their weapons grounded. He takes a deep breath and shakes his blade down to its normal size and drops it into its sheath.
'How are you, my friend? You look like you took the worst of it from our exchange with those fiends. Will you be alright?'
The kindness and tenderness he shows to Fae is a stark and striking contrast to the hulking demon who stood before her mere moments ago. He reaches out tentatively towards her wound but pulls back at the last second as if he's not quite sure what to do with his monstrous hands against her tiny frame.
Instead, he pulls up, steps back and turns to survey the rest of the encampment and check on the rest of his comrades, still keeping the soldiers at bay and Fae firmly within a long arms reach.
OOC: the damage doesn't matter, was just trying to get a sense of how long Zeke could run his hero routine until getting cut down by more competent archers :)
(Ooc: I cant quite track which worgs have taken which hits... I think the top worg is dead or almost dead, the middle one is hurt, and the lower undamaged? )
As the arrow hits Fae's leg, Ethan exclaims,
"Dam it! We wont let that be the end of your adventuring Fae!"
"Take cover behind me if you need."
Ethan move forward to stand somewhat in front of Fae, partially shielding her from the view of the Goblin that is still firing from the north.
Taking aim at the further Goblin, Ethan lets off another bolt of fire from his Fire Caster.
