"Greetings friends! Welcome, welcome! Thank you for joining me here so late in the evening. Please, sit, sit. I would like to invite each of you to join in the spoils of the latest venture of the Rockseeker brothers! Yes indeed, YOU are the fortunate few that we have deemed worthy of this rare opportunity. What exceptional opportunity have you discovered this time, Gundren, you ask? Well, have you heard of the Phandelver's Pact? Wave Echo Cave, perhaps? Surely you have heard of the Forge of Spells, lost so many centuries ago! Well my friends, we have much to discuss! First, however, I am waiting to hear from my brothers, Tharden and Nundro of course, when they reach Phandalin. They are making the necessary arrangements and we will be taking a large shipment of provisions to meet them. It is there that I will tell you more and you can decide if you would pass up this once in a lifetime opportunity! Our supplies should be ready the morning after next, so please do prepare yourselves for the last job you'll ever have to work!"

Hi all, I'd like to invite applications to join my version of Lost Mine of Phandelver. I'm an experienced 5e player, occasional DM, but first time play-by-post DM. I'm looking for 4 to 5 players to help tell this tale. Ideally this will primarily be the story of YOUR characters, with the module itself and the story within as the backdrop for memorable role play, exploration and encounters. Please be creative with your characters, their backstories, bonds and flaws. I have included some suggested backstory threads you can weave into your character creation if you like to really ensure your characters are invested in the events that will unfold, but they should still leave plenty of room for your character to be your own creation. Use of those ideas is not required but I am likely to choose at least a few PC's that do have existing ties to the story. I'd like to put an emphasis on role play in this campaign over crunch, but that does not mean you can't come up with a strong mechanical build as long as the RP is still there. I'll do what I can for battle maps, but we may not have one for each encounter in favor of 'theater of the mind'.
***Please PM me your application per the instructions below. I will choose the PC's by Monday so we can get started, if not earlier if there are enough applications.
Specifics
- 4-5 players
- lvl 2 characters to start (I'll probably scale this campaign up by a level or two. Who doesn't enjoy more class abilities, spells, etc.?)
- no home-brew
- point buy or standard array
- milestone leveling
- all official material from D&D Beyond accepted
- evil alignments are unlikely to work out unless you can really sell me on the idea and how you will somehow still not disrupt the fun of the other players
- no Discord or anything, we can have a PM group for OOC discussion
- I should be able to share quite a bit of my owned content up through around the time Xanathar's came out (Legendary Bundle)
Application
Name: Race: Class: Age: Alignment: Character Bond: Character Flaw: Background: Why are you here? How might you have received an invite from one of the Rockseeker Brothers or Gundren's trusted ally, Sildar Hallwinter? (see backgrounds below)
Suggested Background Ties
- You are a friend or relative (brother, sister, cousin, etc.) of Gundren Rockseeker and his brothers.
- You are a trusted friend of Sildar Hallwinter, renown member of Waterdeep's griffon cavalry and agent of the Lord's Alliance.
- You have family history in Phandalin and are determined to restore it to its former glory.
- You are a treasure hunter searching for the Lost Mine of Phandelver after discovering a map that may hold the key to it's location.
- You have ties to Phandalin and seek aid in dealing with the increased hostility of the local gang known as the Redbrands.
- You suspect Gundren got the information for his latest business venture from your grandfather and want to ensure your family gets its fair share of any wealth that is to be had.
- You are a human or half-elf descendent of the disgraced wizard Mormesk, who 500 years earlier dishonored himself by breaking the Phandelver's Pact, turning on the dwarves and gnomes to take the mines for himself.
- You are a dwarven descendent of Falgrim Thunderheart, founding member of the Phandelver's Pact and master of the forge. Falgrim was lost along with the mines 500 years ago.
- You are a worshiper of Oghma, the Lord of Knowledge, and since coming to Neverwinter have been having dreams or visions of an alter in a castle defiled by goblins, now a shrine to the vile goblin god Maglubiyet. The altar is an offense to Oghma that must not stand.
- You have heard rumors of a new terror in the region around Phandalin and have come to investigate, seek help, seek revenge, etc. (I will PM you with more information if you choose this.)
As instructed by your contacts, each of you has made your way to the Driftwood Inn in Neverwinter by around 10pm. The proprietor, Madame Rosene, is behind the bar chatting with some of her regular patrons, but is always keeping an eye out for new guests coming through the door. An older human woman, Rosene is kind, dignified and welcoming, but you get the sense that she'd toss anyone out of the tavern herself with a firm hand if necessary. When you mention Gundren Rockseeker as instructed she offers you a drink, on 'Mr. Rockseeker's' tab, of course, and points you towards a large table reserved in the corner. Depending on when you arrive, there seems to be quite the eclectic gathering of would be adventurers there.
As you make your way across the crowded tavern you cannot miss the pungent smells of fire roasted meats and spilt ale, string instruments filling the air with lively song and a diverse, boisterous crowd enjoying everything from a chance at cards or overzealous clanging of irons mugs to affections between lovers or quiet whispers in dark corners. Arriving at the table, you see no sign of anyone meeting Gundren's description.
Who arrives when and how would you like to introduce yourselves?
Elra sits down at the table, looking around with interest as she sips on her drink. Seeing no one at the time being she opens up her journal and begins writing down what her dream entailed last night, trying to remember every last detail that she can.
Ethanthanks Rosene for the ale and heads over to the table with the energetic lady, writing in a book, leaving his travelling companions to get their drinks.
Ethanis 6ft tall with copper-red hair, pale skins and freckles over his cheeks and nose. He is wearing a full suit of scale mail armour and has an oversize brass coloured "gauntlet" on his left arm. The "gauntlet" appears cumbersome and somewhat restrictive in how much the arm can be bent. Other then a few odds and end at his belt, and a crossbow strapped to his back, Ethandoesn't appear to have any other gear, no backpack or satchel.
Ethanapproaches the table and introduces himself.
"Hi my names Ethan, is this the table for the meeting with Gundren?"
Elra looks up, "Oh, hi," she closes her book and puts it back in her bag. "I think so. I mean, this is where I was directed. Of course, he doesn't seem to be here right now so I'm not sure if this is where he ment to. But when I talked to him this morning he said to meet here. Maybe he's just late... I'm rambling again." She stops and takes a breath and holds out her hand, "Hi, I'm Elra."
Satisfied, he closes his eyes and takes a few deep breaths. Looking up, he fastens a winning grin onto his face, taps his stick twice and sweeps into the tavern.
He greets the room "Bonjour, all!"
He then turns to Rosene and introduces himself as part of the Rockseeker party. Once he hears of the tab, he orders a pitcher of wine and a meal, all the while flattering the tavern keeper effusively. He then slips off his pack and asks if someone can take it up to his room, as he'll be staying the night.
He crosses the room, waving and smiling at everyone, treating strangers as old friends. As he finally reaches the corner table, he takes a seat where he can both be seen by everyone and see everyone.
He nods to Ethan.
"Etan, you seem to 'ave met a new friend! Bonjour! Maximillion du Champris, a plaisair to meet to. Please call me Maxie!"
Before Elra can answer, a soft grunt from the corner behind the table draws attention to a large figure who's form is only partially hidden by the hooded cloak he wears.
"I am here my friends, I have secured this location to the best of my abilities. There are some unsavory sort here, but none appear to offer any immediate threat.'
His soft voice is a strange counterpoint to his sheer bulk, and yet it easily cuts through the clamor of the bar.
'I am looking forward to meeting our patron and the rest of our companions. I fear they may not be as capable as Maxie and Etan here.'
Elra turns around in her chair, "Oh, hello. You must be Zeke then. What do you mean by unsavory? Everyone I've met here seems perfectly nice. Not to mention helpful. When I first got here I didn't know where anything was and people were pointing me in the right direction. Of course, you're all from Waterdeep though. What's it like there? This is the farthest I've been from my temple, mainly cause the priests there didn't think I would be able to handle being out in the world on my own."
She looks back to Maxie. "What do I do? I'm a follower of Oghma. I'm out here looking for knowledge that's been lost for ages or we just haven't documented yet. Gundren mentioned something about Phandalin, which was really funny because it felt like Oghma was calling me there. So I asked them about it and they invited me here tonight for a meeting."
'I envy your outlook and your optimism, Elra. Unfortunately, your time in the temple may have left you underprepared for environs such as this. One of those 'helpful' gentlemen you spoke with followed you in here with the intention of 'helping' you by lightening the load of your purse. He may have also slit your throat for good measure when he was done - such is the nature of his type. I have discouraged his efforts, but have not yet punished him for his transgressions - I would not dare to do so without your permission - seeing as the offensive was directed at you, and you are not in my charge.'
As he says this, Zeke indicates with a subtle nod of his head a smiling human with flowing blonde hair laughing just a bit too loudly across the tavern and glancing nervously in the party's direction every few minutes.
Elra looks up in interest, "Oh, well that's not very nice. You can leave him alone, I'm sure that he's learned his lesson at this point. Plus he doesn't look the type to slit someone's throat. Speaking of that, well not the silting throats part, but the part about you getting him to leave me alone. How'd you know that's what he was planning, he doesn't look very sketchy. I doubt he was voicing his intentions on his way in here, plus I don't recall seeing him at any point before just now. Oh," she smacks herself in the forehead. "I almost forgot, thank you."
'No thanks necessary, it is my role to make sure no harm comes to the innocent. I start by assuming the worst of people - I find I am rarely disappointed and only occasionally pleasantly surprised. However, in the case of this 'helpful' gentleman, he watched you take your seat and pull out your journal. As you did, he caught a glimpse of your coin purse and began to move into position to join you at the table. I happened to be moving through the tavern at the same time and was able to make it clear to him that approaching you would not be a wise choice.'
Clearly unused to speaking that much, Zeke withdraws back into the folds off his hood and resumes his quiet surveillance of the comings and going of the tavern.
As Gundren's prospective group slowly grows and get to know one another, a few loud discussions stand out over the noise from nearby patrons of the Driftwood.
A few men nearby are discussing the dangers of the road to the south as of late and hobgoblins are mentioned. Before you know it there is a full on argument happening from which the phrases "don't you even know the difference between a goblin and a hobgolblin?", "are you an idiot?" and "what do you know, anyway?" can be heard.
Not long after another man's voice stands out above the crowd yelling "it's a conspiracy between werewolves, giants, bugbears, and hobgoblins I tell you!" "They'll be coming for the city soon if no one puts a stop to it with the numbers they have! I hear their leader is a twenty foot tall ogre, with two heads!"
Lastly some folks at the next table over are discussing the apparent fact that Phandalin has been taken over by an army of spiders led by a giant black spider twice as tall as a draft horse and with enough poison in it to kill a thousand men!
Elra pulls her book out again while focusing on the conversation about Phandalin in particular. Looking around to see if anyone is watching her closely, she snaps her fingers and a barn owl appears, standing on the table next to her book. She absentmindedly pets him while she continues writing down what details of the conversation she is listening to she can pick up on.
"Assuming zee worst? Such a dark outlook, mon ami. Zere is always zee opportunity to turn an enemy into a friend."
As his food and drink arrive, Maxiewhispers to the server. A few moments later the blonde man receives a pint of ale and the server points to the group's table.
Maxie raises his wineglass in a toast and smiles across the room at the would-be thief.

Over the din of the tavern, you think you can faintly hear the distant howling of a wolf. Or maybe it was the wind. Or maybe you just imagined it.
