Watching the creature fall from the sky, Navi would take starting steps to run towards it but she’d stop in her tracks hearing Ulrich’s reasonings to remain as a group. She definitely agreed with him considering she couldn’t see the creature until it was lit up.
Navi would readjust her shield and grab hold of her battle axe before heading towards the corps with the others.
Bren comes with the rest of the group. "You know, this is the kind of thing we might want to bring back to the settlement for further study. We should store the body somewhere it won't be lost or destroyed. I'm sure knowledge of the local predators could be useful."
As you approach the dying creature (anyone with a background outside of a city or underground) will recognize the creature as a (preying) almost 6 ft long mantis, except for two facts: 1) its enormous size, 2) the large size of its head in relation to its body. One thing of stands out is that its front legs would also be fearsome weapons, resembling 4 ft clubs with curved, hooked, spikes embedded for catching prey.
Ulrich
You notice that the creature's flesh, beak and forelimbs included are very soft. That and the brief sight of a slightly smaller, translucent version hanging in the tree lead you to the conclusion, that the Mantis had probably just finished shedding its old exoskeleton.
Relaying the information to the rest of the party, "We also might want to bring its skin with us as well,or at least attempt to hide it somewhere. Someone back at the village might find a use for it. Where it left its skin might be where it's nest is so we might find something of interest or maybe a clue as to what happened to the lost villagers, though I am pretty sure we all know what happened to them."
Climbing 10 ft. into the tree and out onto the limb, you reach the old exoskeleton and see that it has been ripped open from the inside. Reaching up and trying to pull it down, you realize that barbs on the legs have dug deep into the branch above. The exoskeleton is also iron hard and will require hacking the barbed legs from the limb above, and you will not be able to "roll it up" and take it with you.
Corum calls down to the group... Does anyone have telekinesis? This exoskeleton is going to be a right pain in the butt. Be good for armor I think though.
"How well stuck is it? If you're reasonably sure it's secure for now, we shouldn't loosen it until we're on our way back. No point in lugging it around if it'll stay put!"
"What if a wild animal digs this up? I say we just take it's head." Georges suggested. "It's a morbid thought, but why not? We have the storage space."
"That works for me, and as for the exoskeleton, yea we might as well just leave it here and hopefully grab it on the way back." At which point Ulrich will help carve the head form the insects body.

Navi would nod in agreement with the others. While she watched Ulrich carve the head. She’d blink a few times, “Aye, could these creatures be poisonous? It is an insect.” She’d shrug.

Nature: 10
Based on what you know of their normal cousins, it is unlikely. The bile which coats your shield is a very sticky mess that will harden and become brittle over time, is simply a defense mechanism against larger predators in their smaller cousins. Nothing you see would lead you to believe this isn't just a monsterous, giant of the species.
"I'll erm..." Georges began, seeming to squirm at the sight of Navi and Ulrich decapitating the creature. "I'll just leave you two to that then. While we're still on the subject of unsavory looking corpses and what to do with them, do you think it may be possible to leave this body as bait? Though, I'm not sure whether or not these tracks indicate an animal that eats creatures that look like... this."

If its a predator at all it will eat a free meal. Back home the local foxes would terrorize our chickens cause they couldn't leave. Just because something is a hunter doesn't mean it wont choose to be lazy when it can be.
While the others are taking care of the creature Corum turns to start scouting more of the immediate area and looking for a possible paths to continue on the journey.
There are game trails heading off in all 8 compass directions, but no other visible paths or things of interest.
Navi & Ulrich
The Mantis' head comes off easily, although a viscous, yellowish, liquid spills out of its body, there is only a tough cartilage which encases the nerve bundles from the brain to the body.

How long are we going to be out here? And how are we going to keep predators away from it who are looking for an easy meal?

Corum looks thoughtfull, You know... yea I think that it would stay put. I'm come down it should be alright until we come back to this area.
He makes his way down to rejoin the party.
So what have you all decided about this body? should we bury it under the tree?

“Likely not eh?” She’d shrug again before finally reaching for her handaxe, pulling it from the corpse.
