"Thank you Altaira, these maps will help and will give us a base to add on to. Well friends lets finish up our breakfast and pack our things and then head on out."
"Someone's eager." Georges said, chuckling at Corum's eagerness to leave. He hadn't eaten much, his head lost in thoughts of 'what if'. "I cannot do much, as I'm not a person built for combat, but what I can do is what I will do." He said to everyone with a small smile. "Let's get going, shall we?" Georges grabbed his bag, rations and instrument and stood to join Corum, muttering a pep talk under his breath as he walked through the door himself.
"Alright." Navi would finish off her breakfast, wipe off her fingers before reaching for the cartographer's kit and with a shrug, she'd pack it carefully. If she was the last one left, she'd pack away every last crumb she was allowed. Navi would pop one more boiled egg in her mouth before giving Altaira an awkward half bow, half salute of a thank you and good bye. And off she'd go, following the others out.
Altaira wishes you luck as you head out of the door.
As you walk north along the waterfront, you suddenly see a man come flying bodily out of the commissary, to land rolling in the street. There is the sound of several heavy blows and a more muscled man reels back into street and falls over the first man. Striding out behind them comes the cook, wielding a large wooden spoon, with a handle fully three feet long, as a cudgel. "RUDE, UNRULY, ANIMALS," he shouts at the fallen pair. 'Breakfast and drunk and fighting in MY place. I let you keep that swill in MY commissary, and you get drunk in the morning. I warned you last time, you want to behave like animals, then you'll eat like animals in the street. You'll eat here this week, and if you EVER start fighting again, you'll hunt and cook your own food!" With that, he turns back into the commissary, as the drunken (and formally fighting pair) help each other to their feet.
As you leave the waterfront and head into the city, the way becomes increasingly difficult. Small trees, large bushes, vines and thorns have invaded the streets, pushing their way through the once tight cobblestones. Though the main avenue is fully 20 ft wide, in places you have to almost squeeze between giant evergreen trees and walls. The buildings all are empty, the doors, joists and floors long since rotten away, and the buildings filled with shrubs, and in some cases huge trees.
To make the journey through the city more enjoyable, the tops of the buildings and trees are lost in a rising fog, and the air is filled with a fine mist which makes everything damp, and the moss coated cobbles slick.
The street eventually leads you to the edge of town, and you see the buildings have been dismantled, their stone used to create a wall of stone 15 feet high. The stones are slick, and covered with moss. The gate consists of a 10 ft opening in the stone wall, which is now clogged with piled cobbles, leaving only enough of a gap to exit single file.
Huddled on the second floor of a nearby building, two guards hunch around a tiny fire. They notice you but do not interfere and you make your way out of the gate. The road, even here, is difficult to see as untold years of fallen evergreen needles, moss and small plants cover it.
As you move away from the city, though the road is harder to find, the undergrowth gives way to batches, almost fields of fern where patches of sunlight hit the ground. Here and there, long dead trees are covered in moss, lichen and mushrooms. The call of birds can be heard in the distance, along with the rat-a-tat-tat of woodpeckers. The claws of squirrels can be heard skittering up trees, and the rustle of small animals running away can be heard as you approach patches of fern.

The land itself, seems to be gently rolling hills under the dark green canopy, and the road meanders along the path of least resistance turning as it goes to lead you west by northwest.
Ulrich, Alfin and Corum all see the hatchet marks in the tree at nearly the same time. Chunks of the tree's bark as been hacked away, and wounds into the wood seeped sap to create healing scars.
Corum tried valiantly at the start of the walk to be on guard, to pay attention but as the day wore on he started getting distracted by all the different wildlife, and vegetation that seemed to be ready to claim the city for it's own. Until one tree finally stood out to him and he point and excitedly said to the group, Look guys there's the marked tree like she said it would be. Corum will try to see how long ago the marks were left. (Nature check 18)

"Huh. Well, this is a nice sight to see." Georges said with a warm smile, looking around at the change of scenery. The forest's scenery was unparalleled in beauty- at least in Georges' eyes, and for a moment he felt compelled to sit down immediately and write a poem about it. His attention turned to Corum pointing out the marked tree, and his eyes lit up. "We've made progress already! Only thing now to worry about is what'll happen when we actually get there." Georges was giddy with both excitement and dread as he patted Corum's shoulder. "I never would have spotted that. You have one keen eye."
"Now here is our first decision, do we go off the path and investigate where the villagers were killed or continue on? We might possibly learn what is killing the villagers or we might just waste our time trekking there and back. I think it would rally only be for our personal knowledge as the people we did talk to about it back in town did not seem to care all that much. I am good either way, but knowing what we might need to look for, land base or maybe air or tree base, might better protect us when we have to camp in this god forsaken area."

With my 22 roll can I determine what direction the people might have gone or were dragged?
Navi would be looking around blissfully, and almost bump into George when they all stop at the notched tree. “Aye. We’re here for a long time, not necessarily a good time, so may as well go down the rabbit hole.” She’d nod, agreeing to investigate the killings first.

The trail only takes a few moments to find, and following the path made by many feet breaking branches and leaving footprints in the moist soil. Eventually, you come to an area of trampled ferns and broken bushes. Any evidence in the immediate area was likely trampled into oblivion.

Bren takes a knee once reaching the spot of the fight. "This... it may be nearly impossible to gain anything from this mess, but we owe it to these poor souls to try. Navi, if you would help me, we should start looking for anything that the victors missed in covering their tracks. Arrows, hatchets, bodies, anything." The cleric begins moving around the scene, looking in bushes and foliage for any remnants of the fight.
Navi would nod to Bren, taking his orders. She’d methodically start from where they came into the area and scan clockwise. She’d squat to inspect leaves, branches and imprints in the soft soil. She’d look up into the trees and brush lines for any signs above. Navi may be a brute regularly, but when she naps into work mode, she’s quiet and steady, trying to pay attention to the smallest of details, remembering her training from back home.
(My apologies, boss walked in as I was typing and panic posted lol)
Seeing Bren and Navi doing their own investigation Corum will stop that and focus mainly on the natural world around them, trying to glean if he can tell whichever way the attacks may have gone. He studies the twigs, bushes, dirt, and anything else that might give a clue about the direction the attacker may have taken. After a bit he will try to climb a tree and see if he can tell anything different about the vegetation/foliage from this new vantage point:

Bren, searching outward from the site comes across strange tracks heading westward in the damp earth. They would appear to be made by four large sticks, about a foot in length, with a distance of four feet between front and rear legs, with a stride of three feet. Whatever they are, they are indeed hard to find and track.
Corum, climbs the tree, via nubs in the bark until he gets to the lower branches, about 20ft up. As your hand reaches for the lower branches, you notice two, small yellow eyes peaking at you from the pine needles further up the tree.

Georges looked around as well in a search for clues or evidence of what exactly happened in the attack. He was a bit perturbed by the sight of all of the bugs and smaller, slimier creatures, but nonetheless he rolled his sleeves in search of something that could help him discover just where the thing went that assaulted the crew. He looked around the trees and on the ground to see if the creature left anything behind.
(It would be For investigation. Are there any creature hairs, broken trees that the creature knocked down, etc.?)2
