The five of you came together in the town of Oakhurst, and while there heard of the story of how a tribe of goblins sells a single magical fruit every midsummer. People have claimed that when they try to grow their own magical fruit plant from the seeds, the saplings always get stolen when they reach around 2-feet in height. You found out that another group of local adventures from Oakhurst have traveled to the Sunless Citadel a month past and haven't returned. Kerowyn Hucrele has hired you to go there to find and return with the two lost members of her family, a brother and sister. She gave you salvage rights to the Citadel and a 125 gp reward for the signet ring, per sibling.
The five of you leave early morning for the Sunless Citadel. It is a few weeks before midwinter, the surrounding hills are covered in blankets of snow and the freezing temperatures bite at any exposed skin. You follow the Old Road that appears to have been overgrown with plant life from its disuse, it winds through rocky downs and near stands of old-growth oak trees that have lost their leaves. You walk about 7 miles along the Old Road as it passes to the east of a narrow ravine. At the road's closest approach to the cleft, several broken pillars jut from the earth where the ravine widens. Two of the pillars stand straight, but most lean atop sloped earth. Other are broken, and several have apparently fallen into the dark depths. A few similar pillars are visible on the opposite side of the ravine. A knotted rope is tied to one of the leaning pillars on this side of the ravine.

Lorminar is a half elf with muddled features. He wears a well fitted suit of brown leather armor, a bow strapped to his back along with a quiver filled with red feathered arrows. He looks out toward the pillars in the distance. "Well, this must be the place." Lorminar states, as he rubs his hands together in an attempt to bring warmth back into them. "Hope it gets warmer down below!" He jests at the group, with a stupid grin on his face. "What are we waiting for? Off we go!" He begins moving closer to the pillar with the rope tied to it.
Senry a green eyed raven humanoid looks over to the rope attached to the leaning pillar and in a voice that is deep, gravely and almost dwarfish in sound say "No way not gonna appen."
Kerby smiles his winningest half-elfiest smile, blue eyes twinkling with mirth, as he looks from the drop to his comrades plumed appendages. "Fair enough, chum! A life of adventure isn't for everyone. Let's go home then. Last one to Oakhurst buys the first round!"
He turns as if to run, but (hopefully) seeing no takers he chuckled, then with a gesture begins warming his shirt to stave off the cold.
A squat pile of metal, pack, and hair with eyes, Delg is a dwarf. There’s a warhammer and shield slung on his pack which have seen some use, but it’s the tattoos that stand out. He has thunderbolts on his hands, with an anvil on his left palm and a smith’s hammer on his right palm, signs of having joined an order of Moradin’s warriors.
“Is our goal to get across, or to get down?” Delg says softly as he raises a bushy brown eyebrow.
"Well, lets see," Lorminar heads over to the rope and inspects it for recent use (Investigation: 18) and tries to follow the rope end as best he can to see where it leads.
The rope looks sturdy enough, perhaps a bit slick with ice, but the knots make it look fairly easy to climb. It looks like someone tied this rope here not more then three weeks ago. Following the rope it goes down to a ledge that is about 50 feet below that has a few scattered piles of rubble.

Frowning at the icy looking rope, Kerby motions with his hand causing a little steam to rise up as the ice near the top melts into water, then flows to form little regular rung-like crops and freezes again.
(Prestidigitation to melt, shape water to shape and refreeze, can only affect 2 5ft sections at a time but should make it a little less hazardous)
"Well, seems sturdy enough. Can't be older then a few weeks, though it is ice encrusted." Lorminar grabs a hold of the rope with both hands and cracks it like a whip, in an attempt to crack any remaining ice. "Sure beats climbing down a rock face" he says as he begins to use the rope to descend further down the cliff side.

"Send the crow man next!" comes a voice from the crevasse that sounds (Minor Illusion - Performance : 24 ) quite a lot like Lorminar. Acting a little surprised, Kerby steps away from the lip and makes a sweeping gesture towards the rope. "After you!"
After a brief assessment of the burliness of his remaining companions, he concludes he'll probably go next-ish if he can. Never know what's lurking out here in the wilds. Or down there in the depths. Or halfway down the crevasse wall, in the nooks and crannies, beady little eyes in the darkness. Despite the warmth of his shirt he shivers and wonders how far it is to the nearest tavern and which one of these apes he can convince to carry his bags there.
Lorminar: A snowy ledge overlooks a subterranean gulf of darkness to the west. The ledge is wide but rough with snow and rocky debris covering it. A rough-hwen stairwell zigs and zags down the side of the ledge, descending into darkness. Nothing else comes to your attention.

Delg climbs down (with some rope burn or a fall on his butt I’d imagine for a 6 in athletics check lol). On seeing the dark descent, he speaks with a curious tone:
“A strange place, really. Only a rope to get down but stairs after that? Perhaps the rope is meant to invite guests in, but slow them down in leaving. Hmph.”
Delg takes his shield off his pack, and loosens a torch and his warhammer in the straps on his belt, but keeps his hand free.
”I’ll take the front or rear, comrades. But it’s best we keep moving.”
The climb down isn't difficult, the knots in the rope make it easy to repel down to the ledge below. You all now stand on a snowy ledge overlooks a subterranean gulf of darkness to the west. (Sorry, just noticed that everyone went down the rope.)

"Off we go then," Lorminar continues. "Off we go into the depths of DOOM!" He starts descending the rough zig zag stairwell. "Should keep an eye out for those survivors. Perhaps they didn't get far."

Lorminar: Some of the ice does break off of the rope when it is cracked and despite any remaining ice on the rope the climb down is fairly easy.
