I'd like to give a go at running the Essentials Kit adventure, Dragon of Icespire Peak.
I foresee a light-hearted campaign, (Not Looking for Broad Comedy) where the actual characters are fleshed out in RP and play rather than having huge backstories.
Please create a level 1 Good or Neutral character, with a 7 sentence or less description and backstory. Point Buy, standard equipment, will work with custom backgrounds and small equipment swaps. I'm gonna aim for 5 characters, and I'd prefer mainly human or close to human characters. Not that those can't be fun I'd just likely only take 1.
Rules and Sources: Content sharing possible. All but Ravnica, Eberron, CR, UA and Homebrew.
I'll leave this open for 48 hours then make my choices.
Name: Cyril Daren Race: Human Background: Folk Hero Class: Ranger Alignment: Lawful Good Backstory: Cyril has known he wanted to help people ever since he was a teenager. When he was young three children went missing in the forest near his village. The townsfolk gave up quickly, but Cyril stayed out for days until he finally found them. From that day on, everyone knew that Cyril would become a successful guide and tracker, and that he did. He now works in cities, helping commonfolk to navigate the forests, as many fear and misunderstand the creatures who live there. Cyril does his work for the lowest prices he can live on, and he is happy to do it, but lately, he has felt restless. Perhaps, it is time to move to something bigger.
Hello, I think you and I were in a Tomb of Annihilation campaign with each other. I'm wanting to roleplay the same character, except he's going to be a Ranger instead of a Barbarian. I'm not going to roleplay him being so impetuous this time.
Name: Thrann Wildhammer Race: Dwarf (Hill) Class: Ranger (Will choose Hunter archetype) Alignment: Neutral Good Background: Outlander Backstory: Thrann loves to hunt and explore. He hunts with a code, in that he only hunts beasts that are bigger than him. He'll only resort to hunting small game in case of an emergency or if a dire situation necessitates it. Thrann doesn't like to hold grudges and has the go-with-the-flow ideology. He likes to live in the moment and not dwell on his future or the past. In his downtime, he enjoys a pint of mead or ale. He's honestly not too picky as long as he can get a hint of inebriation.
Wrinm is a simple creature, of long-established habits and comforting daily routine. Yet, only so much can be learned from indoors, and after 600 years of research on elemental magics, developing his thesis for a tenured position at the College for the Arcane Arts, Wrinm at last feels prepared to test a few of his hypotheses in the field. Having acquired a loan from an old family friend (10gp! Such riches!), he has opted to travel to the Icespire Range, where he hopes to make groundbreaking discoveries on the nature of Nature itself - finally a worthy presentation for the Academic Council to sink their teeth into!
Kelden was born to be the fifth son of a squire. It was tradition for all male offsprings of the family to join military, rise up thru the ranks always competing with each other, for the son of highest rank within the military would inherit the lands and titles of his father. Kelden was strong, a good soldier, admired by his men and most importently, he was favored by his superiors and quickly came up in hierarchy. Unfortunately, he was not as clever, nor as devious as his brothers who felt threatened by his rise . One of them must have intrigued against him, for he was accused of crimes he did'nt commit and was forced to quit his service. Being regarded a shame to his family y his father, he was no longer welcome at the manor of his family. With no place to go, he decided to become an adventurer and to find a way to reearn the respect of his family and to rehabilitate his name.
Background: Wilick is a man of the land. He leaves a remote life, close enough to the city to get supplies when needed, but far enough away not to be disturbed. He survives with the small patch of land where he grows food for himself and by hunting in the nearby woods. Recently he has noticed the woods becoming a little unsettled, with strange men passing by, and more soldiers on the road than normal. He is worried that the quiet life he has carved out for himself is about to come to an end and he will be dragged back into the cruel world he has tried to leave behind.
Alternative character
I notice that there are a lot of Ranger applications, so I also have a druid I would be willing to play instead.
Race/Class: Wood half-elf Druid (can change to half elf)
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Backgroud: (Much more detailed on character sheet) He is a young druid who is haunted by visions of the demon lord. He discovered a tomb which was possessed and upon opening it released the spirits trapped inside back into the world. He is now trying to beat back the darkness that inhabits him and seeks to find a way of ridding himself of its influence altogether.
Name: Herman Race: Human Background: Sailor Class: Barbarian Alignment: (chaotic neutral) Backstory: Herman is a barbarian not in the common sense of hellenistic words (northern tribes and all) but just because he was raised by worshipers of Baccus/Dionise so he believes in the attachment to the ground as a life source and in the flow of natural things (eg. rage). He was raised by humans, centaurs and fauns: they all tought also how to defend himself. his myth is the mighty Hercules (or any similar macho hero there is in your world). instead of skin of a wolf, he wears the skin of a wolf with the wolf head as a hood
Name: Eira Nygard Race: Wood Elf (or Half-Elf, if you'd prefer) Class: Ranger Alignment: Neutral Good Backstory: Eira was one of the youngest recruits to join the towns guard, the youngest being her mother. She was trained from a young age to follow in the footsteps of her mother but she craved more than the mundane and average life of a town's guard. She wanted to be an adventurer and to experience the chaos of the outside world. So, with only a letter left behind, apologising for abandoning her duty, she left her hometown and set out to find a new life in adventure.
Backstory: Orphaned as a young child due to an outbreak of disease. Archie was quickly found to possess a knack for the arcane. Adopted by the city and sent to train under the court mage. It has come to his part of the training that requires to venture forth and gain experience and hopefully survive.
Name: Nikolaus Brooks Race: Human-Variant(if allowed, but regular human is fine) Background: Folk Hero Class: Cleric-Forge Domain Alignment: Lawful Good Backstory: Most see the flames and toiling of a forge as tedious, sweltering, relentless work, but there are those who know the flames purify and the hammer strengthens not only the body but the soul. Nikolaus has been a crafter since childhood finding no greater joy in life then to create. His father was a master forge smith who travel the world learning from the many different races their own special techniques from tinkering to smithing. As his father's renown grew the lieglord of their small home turn to him to create an arsenal of war the likes of which the world has never seen, but his father refused for as a follower of Gond the crafting of death was never his purpose. Enraged by the refusal the lord had Nikolaus taken prisoner in an attempt to force his father's service. Trapped in a cell beneath the tyrants keep it was their alone in the darkness that Nikolaus first heard his voice the voice of Gond. With Gond's help Nikolaus escaped the dungeons and has been on the run ever sense never knowing what has befell his beloved home and father.
Backstory : 7 lines eh? I'll keep it brief - he's a labourer by trade and something of a loud but tuneful drunk by inclination. After escaping a goblin raid on the village fields - which people assume is 'cause he's known to be quick and quiet, it's definitely not because he threw old Jorgi to 'em and ran - and reporting it to the field chiefs, he was offered a small purse of silver to keep running all the way to Triboar and fetch the Lord's Alliance. Only he hasn't quite made it to Triboar yet - there's a lot of inns along the way, see, and inns have cold ale and hot serving wenches and warm beds... Anyway, them goblins has probably cleared off, they never raid for long. Do they?
Name: Waltyr Sandstone Race: Human Background: Far Traveler Class: Monk Alignment: Neutral Good Backstory: Waltyr has spent his life travelling from town to town studying people and their ways of life. He's always looking to hear a new tale or visit important landmarks on his journeys. While he mostly travels alone, he does love the company of others especially when they're adventure seekers like himself. He always loves learning new things about the people he spends time with and finds that he often learns something about himself in the process.
Nestled in the rocky foothills of the snow-capped Sword Mountains is the mining town of Phandalin, which consists of forty or fifty simple log buildings. Crumbling stone ruins surround the newer houses and shops, showing how this must have been a much larger town in centuries past.
Phandalin’s residents are quiet, hard-working folk who came from distant cities to eke out a life amid the harsh wilderness. They are farmers, stonecutters, blacksmiths, traders, prospectors, and children. The town has no walls and no garrison, but most of the adults keep weapons within easy reach in case the need for arms should arise.
Visitors are welcome here, particularly if they have coin to spend or news to share. The Stonehill Inn at the center of town offers modest lodging and meals. A couple of doors down from the inn, posted outside the townmaster’s hall, is a job board for adventurers.

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"What a lovely little town,"Waltyr says to Nikolaus as they near the outskirts. "We should take a look around to get our bearings." Waltyr checks his belongings and starts making his way into the town.
“Agreed I’ve visited Phandalin a long time ago but it’s been years since then who knows what’s changed.” Looking down on the old town it was certainly looking a lot nicer then it used to be. “What do you think tavern first? Could do with a bit a coin from that job board as well!”
"Not a bad idea to get settled from our travels at the tavern. I could use a drink and maybe they have some of those morsels you enjoy." Waltyr pats his coin pouch at his side getting an idea of how much he had left after his stay in Neverwinter. Finding a job or two to fill his purse wouldn't hurt especially with Nokolaus there to help. "Finding work around town could help to learn more about the townsfolk here. I could use some coin as well."
