A long moment passes...then, scuttling from behind the tree, the figure appears. Three feet of black scales, a pointy snout, and two goggling eyes: a kobold.
"Ey, look 'ere!" the creature squeaks. "I's just passin' through, I is. 'At's right, just passin' through." He rubs his claws frantically, saucer eyes darting about. "Look 'ere, can you just lemme go on? 'At's right, just go on. Wi' me busy-ness."
What do you do?
As for initiative, thanks, it may or may not become necessary, but it definitely could save us an unnecessary round of posts!
P.S. Really sorry I misgendered Belleres! Thanks for pointing out my mistake. :-)
"You might be able to help us, friend, if you've been passing through," Belleres said, emerging from behind their tree, looking earnest. "Something or someone has been stealing sheep from Heldred Gest, who farms down the way. Have you heard or seen anything in your wanderings?
Belleres doesn't fully believe the kobold, who they think looks quite nervous. They want to see how the kobold reacts. Belleres hopes they'll be able to persuade the kobold to share more information
Jharn continues to move slowly toward the tree, though she lowers her rapier so that it is tip down to the ground. Jharn moves until she is about 40' from the creature, allowing Belleres to talk the lead in speaking. Rather than watching the shadowy figure she keeps an eye on the surrounding area. This may not be the only creature to be found.
Believing that the kobold is obviously lying, Necria stands her ground and watches it during its interaction with Belleres to see if any of its personal characteristics can be gleaned that could be used as leverage against it.
Hoping he is unobserved(previous stealth roll) Drueze will remain still and silent. Observing the interaction but ready to intervene if it deteriorates.
"No!" The kobold's tail lashes, and it's voice squeaks higher still. "I don't know nuffin'! I's movin' on!" He turns to dart into the woods.
Belleres has no reason to believe that he's lying, although he might be: he certainly is nervous, but that might just be because you're armed adventurers.
Jharn scans the woods, but the only movement is a squirrel scuttling up a tree.
Uttering a brief incantation, Necria casts thaumaturgy, causing her voice to boom out with threefold loudness, and rushes towards the kobold with her javelin raised.
“Halt, Master Kobold, in the name of the Cave Mother, of whom I am a servant!” she cries. “I demand you state your true business! Ignore me at your peril!”
"It's not coming back,"Jharn says as Necria calls after the kobold. "The question is though do we follow that, or do we stick to our original trail? Drueze, you seemed to be following a path I couldn't see in the dark. What are your thoughts?"
"I'm of a mind to continue as we were. He could be unrelated, leading us astray, or into a trap....if this doesn't go anywhere we can double back after, but he wasn't aggressive. "
"I'm of a mind to continue as we were. He could be unrelated, leading us astray, or into a trap....if this doesn't go anywhere we can double back after, but he wasn't aggressive. "
"I would agree with you on that. Did anyone check that box in the ground?"Jharn makes her way back to the group on the trail and takes a closer look at the box, trying to notice any details or what it might be.
To clarify, Necria isn’t “calling after” the kobold because it’s my understanding that the kobold has only just turned to dart into the woods, and hasn’t actually darted yet. Please correct me if I’m not imagining that correctly.
It is absolutely correct! Sorry I've been absent, I had some personal stuff to deal with.
A long moment passes...then the kobold's head pokes back out. "Who'd you say you was serving?" Its saucer eyes narrow. Necria, can you give me an appropriate social check with your response?
Meanwhile, Belleres catches sight of a broken branch a few places off, regaining the trail. To Drueze, the box looks safe to open...the lid creaks off, revealing 100 silver pieces, a jagged dagger with a dragon-shaped hilt, and a vial filled with thick red liquid.

The contents of the box caught Jharn's attention, but even more interesting was the fact that the kobold actually stopped before felling into the woods. As Necria had been the one to call, Jharn thought it best that they do the talking. Quietly she whistles a tune that weaves through the air inspiring Necria in her actions.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Belleres is going to stay by the trail and wait for the others to investigate the box.
They're not normally very good at what they might call "book magic," (arcana +0) but do know a bit about medicine (+4) so they might recognise common medicinal potions.
Belleres will offer to look at the potion if asked but will hold back and keep looking at the trail. They like their solitude and with the trip into town and now this adventuring party Belleres' introverted self is a bit overloaded.

That's just a straight roll. If DM wants a medicine check rather than arcana add + 4
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Drueze hands 25 silver to each of the group. "Also got these" as he speaks he holds up the dagger and vial, intentionally trying to let the kobold see too. "Anyone need a blade? Looks fancy might just be decorative but maybe more, and this....is..." Drueze looks at the vial 7 (arcana/investigation +1, medicine +4 I don't know what DM will want)

"We should stick to the original trail," said Belleres. "He seemed truthful. Hewas nervous, but armed parties generally have that effect."
Normally perceptive, Belleres trusts their impression of the kobold and will try to convince the others.
