Mary sat silently, while the group came to a consensus to clear the mines, although Mary can be loud obnoxious, and down right boisterous, she felt it was better to observe, are these people potential allies, or are they going to back stab her first chance they get. She evaluated each person in turn quietly.
Witt seemed nice, most halflings and gnomes are decent people, however they can also be down right evil at times. However he looks to be a god person, hope he's not one of those purge all evil doer types. She hates being judged harshly for her primary profession over the years.
Moira seems smart, she's a mage or sorcerer of some type, could be interesting, but she's not a goody two shoes, that would be Nemeia, which is odd Thieflings are not know to be that helpful to regular folks, but then I've had a few on my crew, best Navigator ever was a Theifling. Norcinalia would be pissed to hear the crew mutinied to run slaves. I'll have to look her up next time I'm out west.
Mary then focused on 9, She was only a slave for a couple of weeks before a big ol' Ogre adopted her and raised her a Pirate, and that was just over a hundred years ago. However as a Pirate, Mary was an avid abolitionist. If she had the choice of the richest cargo ship or a slave ship, she would rescue the slaves, take what little they had on the slave ship free the slaves, and take the next big gold ship later. One thing Mary can always tell is a slave or former slave, the fearful way 9 is enjoying the Tobacco, the quiet mannerism, the tenancy towards being polite to people she considers above her status. Mary was sure, 9 was either a freed slave, or a runnaway slave.
She can trust Sora after their little adventure, she doesn't know everything about her yet, not that Sora is hiding some great secret that Mary can tell, it's almost like Sora is an open book of melee fun.
Mary follows the group setting her pace just behind Sora. She knows she hasn't spoken up since she sat down and finished her ale, (assuming it was the cheap ale), she looks over again to see that 9 isn't being coerce as a follower for one of the adventurers, since 9 is setting her own pace, and not looking at any one specifically, Mary concludes 9 is doing this adventurer stuff with her own free will.
Mary with all her past sins, free will is her one and only Virtue.

Sora listens as Nemeia explains her contraption. While it's very fascinating, it's also clear Sora has no understanding about the kind of artificer technology involved in Nemeia's weapon. When the tiefling asks her about the guns she likewise has little knowledge, but tries the best she can to describe it, "The firearms? Can't say for sure, but they look kinda like crossbows but without the 'bow' part, just some metal tube. They're like small handheld cannons. Mary would probably know more about them."
Nemeia looks amazed at the concept and you can tell she's running through ideas on how to make something like that work. It would require the right materials and she'd have to go over the schematics with someone that's familiar with the device. "That sounds fascinating," she says with the thoughts still running rampant. She turns to Mary and says, "Have you had experience with these devices before? I'd love to know more about them."
Mary was only marginally paying attention when Nemeia asked her about ranged weapons.
"Um, yah, most Merchant ships have cannons, or Ballista, the Iblis my ship, had 16 spell castor Cannons, and 3 Small Ballista designed for aerial targets. Many of my former crew used Handguns, or Crossbolts. Me I'm old fashion, Sword and Dagger. But then as Captain my Job wasn't fighting but planning, training the crew, and ensuring everyone had good paydays."
Edit and Note: Spell castor cannons, are something I include in any game, not sure if the DM uses them, but think a cannon designed to fire magic artillery, ie in modern terms a 155mm with HE explosives.
Nemeia smiles like she just found a clue to a riddle. She'll have to ask her later for more information once Nemeia has a schematic planned out. Mary sounds well experienced in that field. "Sounds wonderful. I've actually never been on a boat."
"Ships and boats are a very different experience. Modern sea going ships like my Iblis" Mary stresses her ownership of her former ship. "Have little or no sway in clear conditions, since the Iblis is a Steamer with Sails, she can travel even when there is no wind. While a boat is a small affair, and most ships have several boats for safety and for getting to shore when the draft is too deep for the water." Mary pauses, "..Oh yah, Draft is how deep the Keel goes, The Iblis being an open ocean ship had a deep draft, so much so that not all ports can take a ship of her class."
"Ahh so you're like Witt he gets his magic from the divine too. Oryn I think he said. My magic comes from study. I recently started learning, though my teacher says I'm a very fast learner. He said the best way to learn is to go out and do it. So here I am. I hope one day to be a great wizard like the ones in the stories."
(@gothicshark the spoilers are the ! button on the editor. Also little tip for everyone as it took me a long time to find out and i've met lots of others who dont know. If you are on mobile you can access the editor controls for the forum by holding your device in landscape.)
Nemeia is very familiar with firearms, as there are many specialized firearms crafters in Crystalhaven especially. They are highly valued as they can be extremely deadly and effective weapons despite not using any magic whatsoever. They are more powerful and have a farther range compared to equivalently sized crossbows. However they are not in common use for two main reason. One is that they require much more expensive ammunition, not only the metal shot that it uses but also the explosive powder used to fire it. Two is that they are much more unreliable. The black powder used tends to be unpredictable, even on large scale cannons. On smaller handguns they can backfire easily, potentially breaking the gun itself, sometimes harming the person who fired it.
But there is one other thing Nemeia is familiar with. The pirate ship named Iblis. Though you have no first hand accounts, you've heard numerous stories, particularly from some of the merchants that traveled up from Shysari, about the dreaded pirate ship. Depending on what stories you believe, it was said to be the Scourge of the Umbral Gulf, constantly assaulting merchant ship across the Pirate Isles. They are very fanciful stories, so it's hard to know how much of it is true.
Nemeia nods as Mary describes her ship. She gives a soft smile and says, "that sounds like an amazing ship."
Nemeia turns her focus to her surroundings, making sure they hadn't been loud enough to draw any threats. As she does, her pace slowly starts to lag behind until she is closer to 9. She feigns a smile to her companion.
As everyone is chatting and no one in particular takes lead Moira finds herself up front leading the group. Though to be honest she is not certain that she remembers which way they were told to go.
As you all make your way out of town you head in a generally south western direction. Moira takes the lead and confidently begins walking through the think swamp. Already the ground grows thick and muddy making movement slower. At one point 9 notices a trail off to one side, heading in more or less the same direction, however it's clear Moira didn't see it, or anyone else at the moment. Instead the whole group seems to be slowly moving forward, increasing their distance from the trail.
"It was, while I was the Ships master, I outfitted it personally, using what my Father taught me." (OOC:
By father she means step father. Naval historians however would know who she is referring to.

"However, it's not much of a ship without me, I safeguarded it, so those mutinous bastards have half of the power of the ship without me. She wont win her next big fight." Mary chuckled.
"Honestly I was wondering, this swap forest getting dense? I was wondering wouldn't this be a good place for an ambush?" Mary commented, not actually looking for one, just thinking out loud.
"You know I was just thinking, it seems like it would be a pain in the ass to walk though this swamp with a huge chuck of freshly mined ore every day." Sora thinks out loud as she looks around the ever encroaching swamp.

“Hold up. This way“, 9 points at the unseen space and steps in that direction. She turns to Witt, “So, you are a god botherer too? Why’d you decide to follow Oryn?”, she was interested in various reasons people decided to follow certain deities. Her opportunity was fated it seemed, certainly nothing so perfect could have happen randomly. She glances at Mary couple of times thinking back to the tavern. That was a meaningful look. Interesting. Her kind traffics too, I’m sure of it. Keep an eye on that. These thoughts spun in her mind as she kept an eye on the road and listened to her surroundings with care.

A scowl forms on Nemeia's face as her boots begin to sink into the muck. It wasn't the first time she'd been in a swamp, but normally she knew there'd be something worth it afterwards. She didn't even know if they'd get paid for this work.
