Kella gives a light chuckles before leaning forward in the chair. "Well, we will know for sure about the horses soon enough if you agree to my offer. As for that escort, it may not be necessary, at least not yet. So let's get down to buisness. As you already know, the town is infested with Goblins. I don't know how many but you've already managed to take care of some of them. I don't have a lot of gold left but what I have is yours if you clear out the town of Goblins. How you do that is up to you, killing them would be easiest, but sometimes a deft hand is needed. But I'll leave it up to you." She pulls a pouch of coins off her belt and puts it on the desk behind her near the crossbow. "I've got 8 gold and 5 silver left, I know it's not much but it's all I can offer. All I ask is you secure the town and remove the Goblin menace. After that we can talk about what to do next. Are my terms agreeable?"
Nadia let the men do most of the talking for now, but made her presence known when Zack mentioned her. Granted, her face scrunched up in annoyance, but she understood the fighters reasoning behind it. Her eyes never left the other elf though, scrutinizing her every move, noting the little things about her, and how her gut was screaming at her that something was wrong. And the tattoos. Why did they look so familiar? She took a moment to think it over. Where has she had seen these tattoos before? A criminal group she had run into perhaps? (History? Hoping I'm rolling right for this haha: 17 )
Then the offer of a job came up and before the other two could agree, Nadia finally spoke up. "Hold it, muchacha," She kept her voice stern and cool, and although she lowered her weapon, she still kept it at the ready. "I still have a few questions myself, if you don't mind." She lets a silence fall for a moment as she narrows her eyes at the woman. "Why do you need this town to be cleared out of goblins? The townfolk have already left and gone, the town is practically in ruins, and whose to say the giants won't come back? Are you looking for something?" Her gaze holds. "And why did you ask if the nobles of Waterdeep knew of this towns attack? That's kinda specific. What are they gonna do about it?" Her eyes dart to the tattoo on the others arm then her leg. "If your leg is broken, wrapping it in a bunch of cloth and leathers isn't going to help unless you're hiding something, by the way. I can help you, if you'd allow me, assuming the injury is real, of course." She shrugs a little bit. "And out of curiosity, because I totally dig tattoos, what's yours mean?" (Insight on all the questions she answers: 9).
(Going to make full response later but just gonna make a quick correction. The snake on her arm is a real winged snake not a tattoo of one though its remained motionless throughout this meeting. I apologize if I didn't make it clear.)
You notice Kella gives you glares at you with an expression of annoyance and anger, but she quickly relaxes and responds calmly "Because, my suspicious friend, the town is not in so much ruin that its unsalvageable. People will surely want to return to their homes. But if they come back to a town taken over by Goblins they may find the town to be even more ruined than before. This may be a small group of Goblins now, but what if they decided to tell their leader that the place is abandoned and ripe for conquest? Then we will have Goblin tribe in a fortified town with one entrance. And so close to the Trade way and Waterdeep too. Goblin raids would likely become far more brazen and despite Goblins being weak with the towns defenses still intact any attempt to retake the town by force would cost several lives. If we can secure the town ourselves before this happened, we would be doing everyone a favor. Well everyone except the Goblins of course. As for the Giants, I suppose you are right. Theres no guarantee they won't attack again. But they took the Nightstone and left, I'm not sure if that was why they came or just the spoils of war. But no where is safe from Giants flying in castles except the dwarven cities which are a long way off from here. So it doesnt really matter if people live here, the town over or even in Waterdeep. We are all equally ****ed if the Giants decide to attack in earnest. Since it seems the Waterdavian Nobels either don't know or don't care, it is up to us to secure the village for it's people, unless you know of a beggar on the streets of Waterdeep who can raise a small force to take the village and wouldn't try to stab us in the back" At that thought she pauses briefly before chuckling quietly. "Unless your trying to say you don't trust the nobles. There is something to said about the trustworthiness of those in power. Some might even argue that theives and mercs are more trustworthy and true to their word, especially when being friends is more profitable than being enemies." She gives you another glare though it doesn't seem to be filled with anger like the last one. When you point out her leg, which has no visible deformities or injuries, you see an annoyed expression return to her face. "While I appreciate your offer, I've been tending to my own wounds for years, I'm confident that my leg is healing. I believe it is simply sprained but it's still to hard to walk far on it. A few more days rest is all I need." As you start asking about the snake you see the snake move and start to uncoil from her arm. The grey colored snake unfurls its leathery wings and bares its fangs at you and hissing, almost as if it knew you were talking about it. Kella puts her hand on its head and pets it gently while shushing it. In a soft voice she says "There there. We are all friends here so calm down." she looks back at you Nadia and says "I'm sorry, Scales here is a bit sensitive. But he is simply a pet, nothing more." Kella let's silence linger in the air briefly before addressing the whole group again. "You are a suspicious lot, that's for sure. But suspicion is good, means you have some brains. World has too many people who don't use theirs as it is. But I trust I've answered your questions satisfactorily? I'm eager to hear if your interested in my offer." As she speaks she continues to pet the flying snake which as now once again coiled tightly around her arm and once again remains still.
Nadia, you cant help but feel she was being honest. She seems to be making sense and you couldn't detect any hints of dishonesty in her voice. This conflicts with your earlier gut feeling, how you feel about her is up to you but from the questioning you unfortunately did not feel like you were being lied to.
Nadia : see below spoiler
Even though it seemed she was being honest with you, you still can't shake off the feeling that theres more to the snake she claims as a pet. You think back trying to remember why the snake seems familiar when it hits you. You know that the flying snake is a symbol of an organization known as the Zhentarim, also known as the Black Network. They are a loose organization of shady merchants, mercs, spys, theives and assassins. While they have some legitimate buisness, most of their work is illicit. You don't know how or if they are organized. But you know that you've many orphans who feel they had no alternative end up working for the Black Network in some capacity. From what you remember the Flying snake was a symbol often used by members to identify each other and many long time Zhents have flying snakes which they use to pass along messages to fellow members. You also know that the Zhents employ a mixture of subterfuge and violence to reach whatever goal they have their sights on, but usually prefer using stealth, bribery and blackmail as opposed to brute strength.
((you probably did point out that the snake was real when we first met her I'm just a dummy and forgot! thank you for the correction!))
The more the woman spoke, the tighter she held onto her bow, mostly in irritation, as her eyes returned the annoyed look to the woman. Why did it seem like she were telling the truth? Was the elves gut feeling wrong? What caused her to feel that way in the first place? Then it hit her once the reptile on her arm moved; the winged snake. Zhentarim. When the animal bore its fangs at her, she raised her bow and kept the string taut with an arrow, glaring at it, as if to say 'Test me and I won't hesitate in making you into snake skin boots'until Kella had calmed the creature.
Despite her not sensing any dishonesty in her fellow elves words, and seeing that neither of the two men seemed bothered that they would be working with a Zhent, she had to assume neither of them knew of the organization and what they did. Or maybe they did but they were keeping quiet about it? Either way, she would have to bring the fact up to them alone and see how they would like to continue. "... I'm fine with whatever you two wanna do." She finally forces out through clenched teeth.

Zack watched the exchanges between Nadaar, Nadia, and Kella with interest. Soaking up the back and forths. Even though he couldn't see much, as the lantern only lit up so much, he could still hear where each voice came from as its speaker spoke. Zack had a habit of giving too much trust to people naturally, wanting to believe that everyone was more or less inherently good, and sometimes life just happened. He could empathize with an evil mage who wanted revenge on a town for murdering his wife. However, it wouldn't stop him from ending the dangerous mages life if it seemed the rampage wouldn't stop with just that town. At this point, Zacks arms crossed each other. Gloved hands snugging comfortably into the nooks of his elbows.
Taking note of Nadia's audible tension, Zack began to pay more attention to what was being said. And once the conversations had seemed to come to an end, he would say frankly Allright everyone, calm down ok? We're all friends here, right? And Kella does have a point. Goblins are likely to take over the place if left alone - A fact I hadn't considered before. Still, it would leave a bad taste in my mouth if we killed the two at the gate... so perhaps we can send them to a town, dressed in some decent clothing and they can start a new life? But... the rest, we may just have to put down.... he intentionally leaves out the fact that they had knocked out one just earlier. In the darkness, everyone would easily notice the faint glow in his eyes, the soft, sky-blue hues like a distant fog. .. While I wasn't in the action much during my time in the army, I DID participate in a few rescue raids, including near some elven cities, where we'd try to prevent orcs, bandits, and goblin raids, or.. if we were too late, we'd try to help the survivors.
Zack draws in a heavy breath, before exhaling out So I'm all for this plan. While I don't like killin' for the sake of it, this town does belong to it's citizens and their children, not the goblins. So Nadaar.. I might have to start getting more aggressive.. if you catch my meaning. Which means we'll have to make our way through the town.. but I do have a plan, involving you, Nadia.
And how about instead of your gold.... you offer us something much more valuable; Owe us a favor later, after you've recovered. Is that agreeable to everyone? By now, Zack was leaning against a wall.
Zack started listening the moment Nadia became tense; Insight into Kella's words: 22 (if the bardic inspiration is still active, then + 6
Zacks Deception to hide the fact they had left at-least one other goblin alive: 6
Nadaar lofted a brow ridge at Zack for the 'fighter' comment earlier, starts to say something, only to sigh and roll his eyes. And although he detected no blatant lie in her follow-up, Nadaar remained suspicious, if only because of the proposition. Suspicions that only grew remembering the snake and now hearing a request to secure the town. A not so strange one, and yet...the glares and flashes of anger, only to cover up with a calm veneer. It reminded him too much of dealing with lesser nobles, and set him to grinding his teeth behind closed lips. Over time he visibly calmed to the point apparent interest was moreso on keeping an eye on the hallway over actively on the conversation.
"... Personally, I would prefer the gold over any favor. After all, she is only just a traveling monk whose been rather lucky so far." Nadaar pipes in, finally looking back into the room proper. "And while the mystery behind her order intrigues me most dearly, I won't pry, making the coin much more a value in the future than random favor between two ships passing in the night.... As for the duo at the gate, their fate is something to be discussed after all else here is dealt with in whatever manner fate decides for them. Although if I were to have one genuine complaint, it is that I will not relish playing house cleaner in the dark." He admits with a chuckle, but otherwise loosely agreed with clearing the town.

Kella leans forward in the chair grabs the pouch of coins. "So it sounds like we are agreed, just need to decide on payment then? I'll tell you what, take the coin for now. I can't guarantee I'll be able to return a favor anyway, at least not yet. But if this works out, there might be more work in it for you, then maybe we can work something else out later when I have full access to all my resources, if you're interested anyway. But for now let's keep things simple yeah?"
Also for Zack, as far as you can tell she's been honest with you the whole time, though she has been a bit defensive and snarky in her responses to questions.
Zack would tilt his head, seeing as he felt she wasn't being dishonest, he was still wondering why the other two were being so... guarded? Of course he knew the Zhentarim existed, in fact they were some of the people he was supposed to look out for... but the way he grew up, and the fact he never came across any in his past made him unable to connect the dots between the snake, the Zhents, and this woman. To him, she was just some poor, if snarky, woman who had found herself in a bad place at the wrong time. His idea being shot down made him sigh a bit, but in the end he finally just shrugged, and put out his hand for a shake.
Seems that's that then. We already intended to make our way around town looking for people like you, so adding this to the list almost is just going about our business as intended eh? But seems we have a deal regardless. And Nadaar.. I understand you don't wanna do this at night, but thats the best time to do this. I'll light a torch, and you two stay just out of it's reach, and I'll be a ... 'beacon of human stupidity' y'know? Goblins are more active at night... everyone knows that much. So my plan is basically this.. I become a target, the goblins will think I'm just a 'stupid human, with a large sword' - with you two sneaking behind me. With my torch.. if any goblins get in the area.. you can see them, and Nadia can see them either way.. so she can spot whats outside the light. Then if anything attacks... You guys can take it by 'surprise' while I react accordingly.
Without waiting for them to agree, he, with the lantern turn around, and starts heading down the stairway they had came up, the lantern providing all the light he needed, still clipped to his belt, to keep his hands free. With which he then continues doing as they were before, going to the next location in the order they had agreed to. Only waiting long enough for the others to exit the building, if they were going to. Making sure to pick up the Worgs head on the way out.
As Zack heads down the stairs to head out Kella gently tosses the bag of coins towards Nadaar so it can easily be caught. "Don't forget your coin now. Like I said it ain't much for now, but when you're done come see me. My...order...can be quite profitable for those of talent. Of all goes well here perhaps we can work together on another mutually beneficial job, maybe even discuss that favor your friend is looking for." She turns her head towards you Nadia and gives you a smug wink, as if to say I know you know."Don't have too much fun out there now." She says with a chuckle one could only describe as malevolent. She maintains eye contact with Nadia until both she and Madaar leave the room.
Nadia is last to leave the room when the decision had been made, and although she wasn’t happy with it, she went along anyways, trying to think of the good she would be doing for this town. There was no need to start any trouble now, especially with the Zhentarim, and she hoped that after doing this one little job, that would be that and there was no need to interact with Kella ever again. She kept her eyes hard on the other elf while the others made their way out, and after a moment, followed behind the rest, mumbling a quiet, “Puta.”
When they successfully make their way out of the building, she speaks again. “As much as I like your idea, Zack, what if we attract more than just goblins? More of those... Wolf things from earlier can come too or something else, something worse...” She face goes grim. “Kinda don’t want us to die here, you know? Call me a pessimist but I’m just trying to be realistic.”

Aside from giving Zack a disparaging looking for his plan, and accepting the coin with some measure feigned pleasantness but lingering, underlying disbelief, the dragonborn left content not to openly push or press any points. His stomach for 'extra' it having dimmed over the past few moments. And unlike either Nadia or Zack, no strong references about the Zhentarim has graced his ears. Yet. Not really. The oiliness behind the 'deal' would continue to rub at senses. So much so that after they left, a familiar acrid scent started wafting from him, and there was a tension behind his jaw.
"Worgs."He corrects, growling into a grim chuckle. "They were worgs. Cousins or... something to goblins. But much, much more surely. So, short of a proper horde such as the one an old friend of mines belong to, it is unlikely we'll find more than the pair here."A pleased expression briefly crosses his features before being smothered by grimness. "That said, at the very least we should continue to 'try' limiting our engagements at least a little. Stick to going door to door and so forth, or so I would suggest. But at this point, reiteration is starting to annoy even me. So, my friend Zack, lead on however you wish." At that point, he glances at Nadia, motioning -- if she hadn't already done so -- to edge back at least a short distance to follow quietly."

Once well out of earshot of Kella, as they made their way to the next place in the line. Staying in the lead but far enough back that he could hopefully converse without drawing attention Stealth: 8) Haha, hey Nadaar.. Not everyone knows the name of every creature. his pace as slow as he could manage as they continued, and the smile on his face dropping to a line So... What was the issue back there guys? Clearing the town makes sense to me, I feel bad for the goblins, if there are any more that we haven't met yet, but this .. as I said wasn't a goblin town.. do they have those? he asked, furrowing a brow curiously, but lets the passing thought flit out of existence as fast as it came. But I was gettign the sense that somehow she was pissing you guys off, or atleast Nadia. Though you weren't exactly looking happy there at the end either Naddy.... So... What was up? As far as I could tell, thee was nothing off about 'er...
As he listened for their replies, he continued walking, able to see thanks to the lantern light, and hoping it would blind anything in front of them to his allies behind him. Regardless, Zack would finally draw his sword, and Ready it for any hostile beings, so long as he was aware of it, and could see it.
The three of you leave the Inn and continue through the town, the next closest building is a small house next door to the stables. The house appears to have taken a hit from a boulder and has some serious damage. Around the house is a fenced in muddy pen with several dead pigs and chickens lying about, the kills look relatively fresh.
The stable is a large 2 story wooden building that looks like it could house about 6 or so horses quite comfortably, a sign of whealth and prosperity for the town. From your current position the building looks stable undamaged.
You remain a safe distance away while having your conversation.

"Worg, yeah, thanks." She didn't mean for it to sound as cut and dry as it did, and the boys could hear an irritated sigh escape her before she opens her mouth again. "Sorry about that, and about back there too." As they continued on, Nadia keeps an arrow at the ready and when Zack inquires about how she acted, she gives an answer. "I just don't... like her. The group she's from. I don't know if either of you have heard of the 'Zhentarim' --also known as the Black Network--but she's definitely a part of them. Her stupid pet flying snake gave it away." She rolls her eyes thinking back at how it hissed at her, and she would give anything to have shot it in the face. "Anyways, most of the shit they do is illegal. Most of what makes them up are assassins, thieves, spies... You name it. They're over all shady and are masters at deception... Even though I couldn't detect any ill intent behind her words, I just... Don't like her. My gut was telling me something was up... But I guess I'm wrong, I don't know." She finally takes a breath and after a moment of silence she says, "Sorry."
During the brief time they have before splitting for travel, Nadaar grimaces, but fails to say anything. Not at first. As if encouraged by Nadia's admission the rumbling of the golden whiskered dragonborn's culminates to a heavy sigh. "My apologies, friends, for the attitude. While I cannot recall at the moment anything about this so called Black Network personally, my own ill-feelings stemmed more from the feeling of being 'played' with by someone of a higher social standing then some 'mere traveling monk'. Honestly. My being a dragonborn aside, a dagger and sword should be more efficient for a prepared traveler while maintaining some sort of budget. Perhaps if he she made herself out to be a mercernary or a soldier... mayhaps even some sob story of a noble in hiding-..." He cuts himself off with a click of the tongue.
"Either way. If she belongs to a group like that, her 'intent' seems fairly clear to me."Nadaar admits, snout twisting as if tasting something foul. "Under the right circumstances, if they can make this place 'safe' -- perhaps even play a 'part' in bringing the villagers back /without/ having to risk their own members at that, why, there's no telling just what they could get away with under the noses of a 'grateful' populace."He spits off to the side. And where the wad lands, a thin trail of smoke rises from the ground. "Assuming of course they even bother playing the pretense game, and find value in merely taking over. Using this place as some sort of stepping stone towards future dealings with the elves nearby or elsewhere connected to Nightstone. Question is if we let the game play out as it is once the goblin situation is more manageable? Or offer our employer an 'alternative' game?"He raises a taloned finger. "I suggest merely pondering on this as we go forward for now. Perhaps if we cross the bridge eventually, and contact those inside, they may even have an alternative game in mind."
Having said all that, Nadaar gives the stable and house near it a squint and a once over before giving a look to Zack as if ot ask, 'Lead on whichever way.'

Zack sheathes his sword for just a moment, to allow himself to cross his arms without it being awkward looking or feeling. As Nadia explains the woman was a 'Zhent' and further detailing their illicit trafficking's - As well as Nadaar adding a bit of context to the conversation, Zacks face would remain serious throughout it all, atleast for the moment breaking his focus on the town itself. They both made fair points. Sooo - the long story, short, is She's part of the Zhents, who are bad guys. I had to learn about them back with the military but they seem to have neglected the detail about the snakes being a giveaway. Which means we're currently helping out some pretty bad people. How-ever, we're also helping the dormer populace. But I can see the point about takeover whether subtle or forced. But let me throw this in too; Regardless of whether it's us or them who 'save' the town from the goblins, they're going to do it anyway. So... it's at this point his face goes from serious, to a flash of cunning, before transitioning to his usual, peppy smile So we should do it anyway. If you already know you're in a trap, you may as well trigger it. Besides, all it means is we have to prevent them from doing it. Throw a fly in their soup. As much as I'd like to say we could use those two goblins at the gate as witnesses, I doubt that would help. And I doubt any of us are versed enough to 'record' it magically. So if we do find some other folks alive, We'll just have to make sure they remember us.
After his long speech, Zack would finally proceed to the next house, the 'well off' one. Chuckling just a bit at the fact that a clearly wealthy family would build a stable that was at-least two to three times the size of their actual home! but brushing that humored thought aside, he would proceed to the front door (Stealth: 5) as quietly as he could manage, but before heading inside, he would peek around towards the stables, seeing if anything in or around it would catch his eye (Perception within range of the light: 10) Unless something did, he would turn around and head inside the house itself, sword drawn and ready.

Zhentarim. When the animal bore its fangs at her, she raised her bow and kept the string taut with an arrow, glaring at it, as if to say 'Test me and I won't hesitate in making you into snake skin boots' until Kella had calmed the creature.

Of all goes well here perhaps we can work together on another mutually beneficial job, maybe even discuss that favor your friend is looking for." She turns her head towards you Nadia and gives you a smug wink, as if to say I know you know. "Don't have too much fun out there now." She says with a chuckle one could only describe as malevolent.

"Worgs." He corrects, growling into a grim chuckle. "They were worgs. Cousins or... something to goblins. But much, much more surely. So, short of a proper horde such as the one an old friend of mines belong to, it is unlikely we'll find more than the pair here." A pleased expression briefly crosses his features before being smothered by grimness.

If she belongs to a group like that, her 'intent' seems fairly clear to me." Nadaar admits, snout twisting as if tasting something foul. "Under the right circumstances, if they can make this place 'safe' -- perhaps even play a 'part' in bringing the villagers back /without/ having to risk their own members at that, why, there's no telling just what they could get away with under the noses of a 'grateful' populace." He spits off to the side. Or offer our employer an 'alternative' game?" He raises a taloned finger.
