"Great. Name's Tamlynn. How long you been listenin', Drow-bait?"
Elwin inwardly winced. She'd spilled ale on herself... he'd gone a big too far, it seemed. Still, that she wasn't already beating him across the head or yelling the High Rules of the temple at him was a good sign. Just in case, he decided to not bring it up at the moment.
"Just long enough to hear about this Gingerbread Man," he answered, softening his smile and adding a touch of somberness to his voice. He paused as Gavin chimed in.
"You lot are perfect for this job...now, here's another round of drinks on me. I want ya' to listen for a minute. It seems like many businesses in the Tavern District and the Lower Slumbs have been paying a Protection fee to the Gingerbread Man recently...maybe that wouldn't be a bad place to start...I know we haven't talked much, but I feel like I could ask you group a few favors that other Knights might...shy away from...And you of course understand that sometimes, to pursue the Greater Good, one must break a few laws here and there...."
Elwin scoffed, a bitter tone entering his voice. "Let's be real... laws are just the wishes of stuffy, inbred nobility written on fancy paper and told to the rest of us. Don't you worry, we'll do what we need to, whether "the law" obliges or not." He realized anyone who had a more balanced view might be listening in, and might take offense. He didn't care; kissing up to nobles and royalty was enough to permanently brand you rather unfavorably, as far as he was concerned.
“Yes… the ‘Greater Good’, that’s what I always shoot for. Thank you for the information, Gavin. That sounds like a good place to start.”
“I for one am surprisingly sober and oh so excited to crumble this Cookie. I guess we’ll get to know you, Elwin, on the road. I swear, if my purse comes up light, I am going to sit on you until you can’t breathe”.
A grin, an eye-roll and a shrug were Elwin's only response to the threat promise. He'd said his piece. No point in rambling on and on about his honesty; it would certainly come across poorly. Still, with nary a glance, he deftly swiped up the coins sent his way and added them to his own purse, not quite aware of how THAT might have looked.
“Is everyone ready to move? It seems we’re already in the tavern district; perhaps we should quietly inquire with some local merchants before heading out to case the slums? Surely the trail of Crumbs will present itself shortly."
"I suppose we might as well. Something's bound to turn up."
Straightening out his backpack, and the shield covering it, he stood and stepped to the side to allow the two who were there first to take the lead.
Elwin raised an eyebrow at the new adventurer. He paused in thought, then glanced at Gavin, then at his two companions, then back at the newcomer.
Suppressing a sigh, he reached into his purse and began counting out... how much would it be? Right, it would be 42 gold from him to balance things. For not the first time in recent months, he felt a pang of guilt for how much trouble he'd given the temple priests for forcing him to study his arithmetic.
Still, it MIGHT not be a last-minute addition to the party, right? They could probably use the help, to be honest; but just in case, Elwin held the gold quietly in his hand and waited to see Gavin's reaction.
Torment hears the tinkling of gold pieces and casts a look at Elwin - "Oh for F..." - looking back at the metal monstrosity. "Wha... are you...?
She shakes her head. This human was already doling out their funds to random metal men without even meeting them. She made a mental note to keep this in mind moving forward. She was certainly not ready to hand gold to a stranger in the middle of a bar full of would-be enemies and cut-throats. She had no idea who these people were besides Tamlynn and maaaaybe Elwin.
Sighing, Tori, nonchalantly shifts her shield around to her side and takes a deep breath, waiting to see what happens next.
Torment certainly hadn't missed Elwin's eye roll at her statement regarding the Greater Good. She wonders if he knew she was being sarcastic... no matter, they'd find out rather quickly about each other when standing over the bodies of their enemies and hoards of treasure. She didn't trust him one bit, but they would work together... for now. Who knows, she thought, maybe he would like to try the sauce."

Gavin cannot help but laugh at the tornado of Chaos and randomness that just landed in his Tavern, highly entertained by the drunkennes, foul language and mildly violent interactions between a group of strangers, including a Warforged (which is still largely unheard of in Talaveroth) willing to help him take down a King Pin for money. He basks in the atmosphere.
"Well that's a lot more like me'old Tavern, the Sleeping Goat...aaah, memories....the not so distant days where I was still poor... You two definitely remind me of me'old crowd (staring at Torment and Tamlynn)...not a night without a brawl or a broken nose...you, not so much (staring at X)... what in the Six Clans are ya' ? And you...(staring at Elwyn), ye're that kid who used to hangout with Frettingen back in the days, ay? I got some bad news for you, lad. I think there's something foul surrounding the City, and it's growing by the day...I'm pretty sure that same something killed Frettingen and his Lord on their way here...and I'm pretty sure the Gingerbread man is somehow connected to it all...If you're willing to help me discover more about that bastard, and achieve what both the Granit Clan and the Mage Guild couldn't, then yes, you get to take this money now, then double that and more if ya' bring me tangible evidence about his true identity and his connection to a Higher Evil. A good place to start would be the Rusty Axe, in the Lower Peak, South of the Grand Marketplace.
Also, as ya' may have noticed, there's a big Carnival in town, at the Grand Marketplace. And many of the Gypsie Families running it are known for their dubious businesses and smuggling skills. I betcha two to one there's a connection there. Or at least someone knows. You should talk to Florence. He owes me a favor. He runs a knife throwing show on the Grand Market Plaza , ya' really can't miss him. Usually he performs about 3 shows every day...Any questions?"
Tamlynn had never in her life been so happy to hear someone speak as she was at this very moment. Visibly relieved, she exhales loudly, allowing her whole body to relax.
She smiles at Gavin and in her quasi-euphoric state, grabs him by the cheeks and lays a long, wet, and satisfying smooch on him. Pulling away ever so slightly, looking into his eyes, "You can send me on missions, anytime."
Smooch with Athletics (+2) or Perf (0) = 19 (whichever you prefer *wink*)
And with that, she leaves her barman behind, pocketing the rest of the gold, and moves to stand before Elwyn. Saying sweetly, "Oh, my lil Drow-Bait. There is so much I can teach you."
Intently placing her hands on the sides of his upper arms, "From now on you're gonna call me Ma'am, and the first thing were gonna work on is your money moves."
"First up, and this may be the most important, never...and I mean never-ever...count your money while you're sitting at the table." She gives his arms a squeeze, and then gently turns him towards the door. "There's a song about just this situation, I'd like you to hear."
As they catch up to their sleuthing companions, she winks at her beguiling horned goddess of ****ery, and thickly says with a nod towards the bar, "He is most definitely shareable."
After a soft giggle, she then turns to the figure next to Tori and extends her hand, "Now, who are you?"
X looked over at the barman who was asking the questions of him, his eyes turning red for a second as he seemed to analyze the person with his red yet stone cold gaze ”analysis, race human, occupation, bartender, abilities, threat level:likely minimum” X said before his eyes faded back there black color and he held out a hand Tamlynn “nice to meet you, I am War-forged Juggernaut Model X #41, however I go by X, before asking questions by I learn your name”
"And you...(staring at Elwyn), ye're that kid who used to hangout with Frettingen back in the days, ay? I got some bad news for you, lad. Elwin snapped to attention at the mention of his friend's name. So, this old codger remembered them? And seemed to think Frettingen was dead, somehow in connection with this Gingerbread Man.
It was all the accusation Elwin needed. Without acknowledging his history, he silently filed away the two leads.
And with that, she leaves her barman behind, pocketing the rest of the gold, and moves to stand before Elwyn. Saying sweetly, "Oh, my lil Drow-Bait. There is so much I can teach you."
Caught a bit by surprise, Elwin simply smiled. He considered responding as she spoke--if anything, he was deflecting attention from her friend's earlier divvying up of their loot--but held silent, keeping his hands on his backpack straps. After all, he was amused by the redhead's mannerisms and was curious to see where this was going.
After a soft giggle, she then turns to the figure next to Tori and extends her hand, "Now, who are you?"
The smile on his face almost faded away as Elwin looked over toward the Warforged, then re-deposited his carefully-counted coins as discretely as possible (which wasn't very.) He'd never seen one of its kind before, and were he honest, the idea of a dead, inanimate suit of armor acting alive unnerved him somewhat. It was when the possibility that the thing might not even have a use for money crossed his mind that he decided to bring up the idea of compensation later--if at all (not that HE would have wanted to head out without an agreement in place beforehand.)
His mind went back to their two leads as the others finished talking. The Rusty Axe, he was somewhat familiar with, but he'd never actually entered. And then Florence, the performer on the Grand Market Plaza. Probably better to start with him--not for any reason Elwin could articulate, it just seemed to make more sense to the young warlock.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Torment surveys the scene casually, letting her guard down a bit now that it is apparent this Metal Titan is not out for bounty.
Thinking that Elwin and his new “teacher” need to spend some quality lesson time together, she addresses the two of them -
“How about I take this hunk of metal down to the Rusty Ax and see if we can get in a bar fight, and you two check out the gypsies? The more ground we cover, the faster we can crunch this Crooked Cookie. Or we could switch missions, either way.”
Giving Tamlynn a glance and laying her hand aside her face to hide her lips, she whispers - “We might have to share the skinny one too.”
Persuasion - 21
Finally deciding she might as well be nice to the elephant in the room, she looks up at X#41 and gingerly holds her hand out to him, her expression a bit unsure - “Well, big guy, I’m Torment. Are you interested in going on a little adventure with lil ol’ me? I need a big stwong guy to protect me.”
She pointlessly winks at the automaton, wondering if he’s hard everywhere.
"Before I go anywhere with you though, we are going to have to calibrate your sensors... that bartender is definitely not a human. If you're going to have my back, I need you to know what a dwarf looks like."
The autotmon looked at Torment for a second turning his robotic head a bit before a few mechanical sounds could be heard coming from his head before his eyes went red again and gazed upon the dwarf "recalibrating sensors, indication proven wrong, changing old profile to drawf" he then looked back at Torment and gave him a nod that seemed friendly "thank you for correcting me Torment" he said shaking her head with his metalic grip, he seemed to have a friendly voice, most of Torments more suggestive talk translated to being friendly as the automaton didn't really understand those other feelings, his gaze seemed to turn a bit more serious as he ended the hand shake "so what kind of adventure is this"

Tamlynn pauses outstretching her hand to the warforge at Tori's suggestion. Squinting in contemplation at her and then at it, Tam wonders if her hellish-friend understood what she was putting forward.
In her former existence, there were rumors that Tam's leaders (captors) had managed take a few over the generations. Kidnapping them, like so many before, from various planes. She heard that they had even been able to establish them amongst the ranks.
Leery of believing such a thing to exist, she would listen to the other soldiers telling stories of their battles. Even one suggested that while war was the motivation behind them, it wasn't always the outcome. They could pray and shun the violence they was forced to perform.
Tam always laughed at these stories, but not now. Should she stop her or go along, but then...
Giving Tamlynn a glance and laying her hand aside her face to hide her lips, she whispers - “We might have to share the skinny one too.”
Opposing Persuasion Check = 22
She remembered her dear barman and turns back toward him, placing her arm around Tori's waste. "Oh, we'll share him alright," giving each of them a wink and a knowing grin in turn.
Deciding quickly, Tori could certainly handle herself with this thing. Especially, after she was able to re-calibrate him. Human for a dwarf...Not her Gavin!
Tam then grabs for DB's hand and says, "Are you ready for more lessons? We'll have plenty of time on the way to the Carnival."
Smiling at him pleasantly and ruefully grinning at Tori as she waves goodbye, she says to him, "Let me sing you that song." (queue music)

Torment blows a stray hair out of her eyes and smooths it between her horns. Swinging her shield to her back and opening her belt pouch, she pulls some hard tack from inside and tosses it in her mouth. Shifting the awful snack into her cheek, she leans back on her left leg and looks up at X with one eye squinted.
“Alright, Steely McGee, here’s the gist. We need to beat a man made of terrifying Cookie Dough to death, but we’re going to have to find him and figure out why no one else has been up to the task. You’re made of metal, I’m made of fire… surely the two of us can convince the patrons at the Rusty Axe pub to give up some information.”
Looping her arm around X#41’s large wrist, she pulls him towards the door.“We’ll strategize on the way! Come on, let’s go have some fun! I think you’d be great at blocking the exits.”
She grins endearingly up at the construct and lifts her feet off the ground to take a small swing on his forearm.
After a moment of walking, she gives X a mousy look - “Soooo, I wanted to talk to you about some ways we could assist each other in battle. How do you feel about… saddles?”
Elwin inwardly winced. She'd spilled ale on herself... he'd gone a big too far, it seemed. Still, that she wasn't already beating him across the head or yelling the High Rules of the temple at him was a good sign. Just in case, he decided to not bring it up at the moment.

Looping her arm around X#41’s large wrist, she pulls him towards the door. “We’ll strategize on the way!
