From the fringes of society, Brutus spent most of his time in the wild. His tribe keen to living off the land, while being minimally intrusive to nature. The tribe prays to the spirits of the forest to guide and protect their nomadic settlement. When coming of age, each member is sent on a quest to find their spirit guardian. Through adversity and experience each tribe member can forge their bond with nature, realizing their true potential for the benefit of the tribe. It is upon the completion of the quest that Brutus will be given his “true name”.
Time zone - EST, but often up in middle of night and able to post.
(Stats are manual but reflect point but with added racial benefits. Same with spells - all “homebrew” but true to official material)
I like the race/class combo, seems it would make for some interesting role play.

Yeah, I would enjoy to play the naive and lovable oaf, with a bit of an anger side when you threaten his family/helpless creatures. I think the Firbolg traits will go along way with RP and out of combat interactions to let him not be just someone that’s good to hit things. Looking forward to it, if I make it in.
The crumbling ruins of the Misty Forest harken back to an age lost to men. Elves, however, have long memories. The once-great empires destroyed in the Crown Wars—remnants of which are scattered throughout Faerûn—are sacred to the somber wood elves. The ruins signify the hubris and arrogance of unchecked expansion and greed, as well as an overwhelming dissonance with nature. Daniloth Winterglen is one such wood elf. Guided by Solonor, Daniloth trusts that it is his duty to preserve the fallen glory of past generations while embodying a life embued with sylvan harmony. Daniloth lives a solitary life. He guards ruins, protects travelers in pilgrimage, and defends the borders of the Misty Forest. Rarely does he travel to the greater communities of his elven kin. In fact, it has been some generations since he last visited Melandrach's court. But recently Redclaw Orcs came down from High Moor, encroaching on the wood elves' realm. Daniloth does not know why the orcs migrated, but he feels the unease and discordance that accompany them. A political matter that cannot be ignored, Daniloth now stirs from his moss-covered stones and overgrown trees to warn the king and his advisors of the orcs' coming.
UPDATE: seeing a lot of good character options to pick from here! Great response to this recruitment ad, and yes it is going to be a very tough choice for how to round out this party. Not a bad problem to have :)
At this time, I have already selected a wizard, rogue, cleric and fighter, so the last spot will go to one of the other classes that has not been filled yet (I don’t like to double-up on classes.) There is usually one or two folks that flake on a PbP game shortly after starting, so anyone who does not get in immediately will be on my list of alternates to fill any vacancies that might occur early on.
Just a reminder that ability stats should be formulated using only the point buy or standard array method. I know everyone loves rolling for ability stats just as much as I do, but I want to maintain an even distribution of talent across the party, so rolling for ability stats is not an available option during character creation for this game. (Also, I forgot to mention it in the game ad but please no Eberron or Ravnica content...this is a Forgotten Realms setting.)
Once the game begins, my intent is to try to make a party post once per day to include a reply to each character’s response once per day as well, higher frequency on (most) weekends. I use 3D Virtual Tabletop app to build the game board, and I will include regular snapshots to keep everyone informed on the physical arrangement of PCs/NPCs.
Lastly, once recruitment is closed I plan to shut down this thread and open a separate/private thread for the actual gameplay. Really looking forward to getting this adventure started!!
Ronk's gang was wiped out when he was very young, and he was taken in by the kind monks of The Order of the Tranquil Serpent. In their small monastery, he learned all sorts of handy things like meditation, spiritual enlightenment... And punching a persons organs out of them. He probably would have stayed there the rest of his life if it hadn't been for that mob from the nearby village demanding the monks hand over the bugbear that HAD to be the one responsible for the rash of killings among the farmers and craftsmen. Since that day, he's wandered mostly aimlessly, though recently, his meditations seem to be directing him on a specific course... When he does go into towns, he tends to conceal himself with robes, bandages, and a piece of wicker headgear that covers the entirety of his head, acting like any other mendicant asking for alms.

You had me at “punching a person’s organs out of them” bravo
If you don’t mind, can you PM me with Ronk’s alignment and background/personality traits?
Backstory: Aazel is the son of a clan chief. His parents were killed in tribal wars leaving him as the sole survivor of his clan. As a youth he was given a medallion which he was told that when he came of age, it would lead him to great knowledge and power, but since there is no one left from his clan to guide him he never learnt the meaning behind the medallion. His purpose in becoming a holy warrior was two-fold: 1) to be able to stand up to his enemies if ever they came again. He would not allow his clan to die completely; 2) to seek for some way to try and connect with the spirit of his parents in the afterlife to gain knowledge of the medallion and its secret.
He continues to study any aspect of religion or arcane knowledge he can find in hopes of either contacting his parents or unlocking the secrets of the medallion.
Aazel is in Phandalin as he is travelling to see the shrine of Tymora. He is on a pilgrimage travelling to the temples and shrines in the Sword Coast to try and gain favor from the gods to help him contact his parents.
Thanks everyone for all the replies and really awesome character submissions! The primary picks have been made and the campaign roster filled. For those who did not get a campaign invite, I will certainly reach out here first to fill any openings should anyone drop/ghost/etc. Sorry I could not pick everyone, so many fantastic choices here.
UPDATE: one of our players had to drop out, so I am advertising for one opening. Our departing character was a firbolg barbarian. Remaining are a human fighter, wood elf rogue, high elf wizard and dragonborn cleric. The party is currently level 3 and has completed the Umbrage Hill and Dwarven Excavation quests. They have just travelled from Phandalin to Gnomengarde and are about to start exploring that adventure area.
If interested, please refer to the character creation requirements on page 1 of this thread. PM me direct with character sheets and background info.
Full disclosure, we use a Discord text-based server for our OOC chat and battle maps/initiative updates, so anyone desiring to join the campaign would need to be willing to use that application to receive info pertaining to the storyline. (We still post in D&D Beyond forum for actual gameplay.)
LOOKING TO FILL TWO OPENINGS IN THE CAMPAIGN. THE PARTY HAS COMPLETED ALL THREE STARTER QUESTS AND IS CURRENTLY EXPLORING BUTTERSKULL RANCH. YOU CAN VIEW THE GAME THREAD HERE.
IN ADDITION TO THE CHARACTER CREATION GUIDELINES AT BEGINNING OF THIS THREAD, CHARACTERS SHOULD BE DEVELOPED AT LEVEL 3.
PLEASE POST A LINK TO YOUR CHARACTER SUBMISSIONS IN THIS THREAD WITH A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF YOUR CHARACTER CONCEPT/BACKGROUND.
RECRUITING FOR: TANK - Fighter, Paladin or Ranger MELEE - Barbarian, Druid or Monk
DM'S NOTE: IN ORDER TO KEEP THE GAME THREAD FLOWING SMOOTHLY AND FOCUSED ON THE STORY NARRATIVE, OUR PARTY USES A DISCORD TEXT (NOT VOICE) SERVER FOR ALL OOC DISCUSSIONS. THIS IS ALSO WHERE I POST MAPS, NPC IMAGES, HOUSE RULES, LOOT SHARE AND OTHER IMPORTANT GAME INFO OUTSIDE OF THE ACTUAL THREAD ITSELF. FOR THIS REASON, USE OF DISCORD IS REQUIRED TO FULLY PARTICIPATE IN THIS CAMPAIGN.
I’m still working on the backstory, but I have a short summary:
He was taken in by a monastery at a young age and spent quite a bit of his life there, until one of the other acolytes there was promoted. Due to his infernal heritage, this person cast them out.
That’s a very basic idea, I know. I have to get more information on the campaign before I can make it as detailed as I usually do.
Quakko (Fighter) has a similar story to most warforged. Made in a distant land to fight an old world he's traveled far and wide learning things here and there. Along the way he's learned a few things and gained an appreciation for the natural world and the few friends he's made. Now he seeks to find new adventure here with a new group of friends.
Trill (Druid) has lived a hermetic life. Wandering the wilds through mimicking various animals. Through it all he came to live with a druidic group, learning their ways and mimicking the animals that came around.
Sarven is one of the small handful of druids located in the Kryptgarden Forest called the Dusk Circle. From time to time he travels up to nearby villages to provide aid to those that need it and to indulge in delights that aren't found. This has resulted in him developing a small wanderlust.
Each time he ventures forth he goes a little further than he had before to find more delights whilst helping others.
As a child, Borthal was captured in a raid by a rival clan and sold to slavers. He was raised to fight in gladiatorial arenas. He has since earned his freedom, but he continues to fight... and to flirt. Recently, he flirted with the wrong nobleman's wife and had to leave town in a hurry. He has a letter from an admirer that says if he is ever in the area, he should look for her in [Phandalin?]...
Story: In my tribe, in order to prove your self in order to be accepted as an equal you need to bring honor to your name. That can be only done by slaying a dragon and bringing its head back to the tribes chief. So when I was old enough to be able to start my adventure I did head out to search for a dragon to slay. So after hearing rumors of a dragon been seen around Phandalin I went there.
Minsys if a from a wondering tribe high up in the mountains. They mostly keep to themselves and try to live off of nature. Out of the tribe there are a few that are selected to head to neighboring towns and meet with more "civilized" people to trade what the tribe can't otherwise secure. Minsys was recently chosen for such a role and hasn't been at it long. After returning from one such trading excursion, he returned to a massacre. The tribe had been decimated by something, something huge and vicious.

Good luck to everyone! There's really a lot of great apps though, so still!
Looks like there's plenty of good applicants, but I'll throw my hat into the ring too.
