I’m recruiting 1-2 players for a homebrewed campaign. We are actually quite late in the campaign as the characters have all just reached level 7. The first "book" will end upon reaching level 10 but I've had requests to construct a sequel (which I have started outlining) to take the team all the way to 20.
Post every day
The number 1 thing I have seen to ensure success of a long-running PbP campaign is consistency. That’s what I’m striving for and I hope the same in my players. If you can post every day and not be afraid to leap in and contribute, I'm definitely interested. If you need to take a break or expect to have spotty availability, let me know! And don't be afraid to come back. I will work with you.
I am looking for players will post every day M-F and at least once on the weekend.
I will post for a character that hasn’t checked in after 24 hours, but that doesn't mean you're out. Sometimes you can't make a session. That's fine, but stay in touch. I try to keep my players up to speed and I expect the same from them.
To reiterate: If something comes up let me know. I can slow the game or change an encounter to accommodate.
Posting preferences
Each character adopts a color for combat maps and to pick names out of posts easily.
I will hide posts for individuals or split parties and I trust you won’t read them if they aren’t intended for you.
Characters
Characters can be any race or class, including UA. I prefer characters that are quirking or don't fit the mold. The original team was composed of circus performers. Something that jives with the band of misfits is going to catch my eye.
Point buy to create characters
Character will start at level 7..
Feats are fine, where available.
Start with one common wondrous item and 2000 gold to spend on any equipment you like. I will price magic items for anyone selected via PM.
Characters are generally good-aligned.
You'll get up to speed on the story in-game.
Character will start in the riverside city of Masa, a large trading hub.
The story centers on a divine conflict between the Heavens and the Hells over a little girl key to both sides' interests.
The Homebrew World
Most of what you need to know of the world will be provided as we go.
What you do know: The country you are in is called Alcion, ruled by King Haddian, who is kind, beloved, and a powerful mage. Also, the gods are the standard gods found in Faerun but can include non-standard ones if that is what you need for your character.
The world will have an occasional greco-roman feel to it, hopefully not a heavy-handed one.
We currently have:
A goliath fighter/mage A goblin wizard A warforged fighter/barbarian A kenku rogue/cleric
DM style
This is my first homebrew campaign, but I have been running a Dragon Heist PbP campaign that has continued into the Mad Mage module, so I am comfortable with DMing here now. That said, a laid-back approach is preferred as I am still learning. I have a rough story in mind but I’m trying not to railroad the group through it. Again, I’ll happily be surprised by what comes and tailor the adventure to the group I accept.
I prefer to roll initiative for the party, since it keeps things moving along and I also do not stick to rigid initiative order. For example, the heroes might all go first in any order followed by the opponents (or vice-versa).
I'll be using Milestone advancement. Counting XP is fine but I like to keep things streamlined and Milestone is definitely streamlined.
What you need to provide:
Name
Race
Class
Alignment
A briefbackstory explaining the adventures that brought the character to be level 7.
Why is the character in Masa?
What wondrous item (and any other special requests to spend your money on) you wish the character to start with.
Thanks for your submissions! I will choose in just a couple of days, since the point of entry for the chosen character is already upon us. I'll have the chosen rolled up using point-buy after I've made my selection.
Backstory: Life in the tribe was not easy for me growing up as I was never as strong as my brothers. Many, many times my life was put in jeopardy from my tribesman but somehow I always escaped death. After about 10 seasons I noticed a change in my behavior, I knew I could never match my tribesman strengths but I could easily outwit and out maneuver them. As my tribesman rampaged through the forests after prey, usually spending the entire day, I would be back within hours, typically with a haul better than theirs. I found out, striking from the shadows and sneaking up on prey yielded so much more. I never relished the rampant destruction of my tribe and learned that if you just take a little bit of time, in the long run it yielded more plunder for the tribe. This type of behavior did not sit well with the chief but as I continued to provide results he looked the other way. I learned that if you study your prey enough they would easily fall in front of you. Eventually the chief was swayed by all the soothsayers and started to make riskier and riskier decisions as they were telling him the world was coming to an end. I remember the day my tribe was wiped out, I witnessed it happening but there was nothing I could do, I was too far away. I saw the ground beneath my tribe open up and some type of creature with tentacles come crawling out and lay waste to the tribe. Since then I have wandered the land helping out where I could, and helping myself when opportunity arose and then came to the city called Maras, that I learned is ruled by a great mage. It got me to thinking of why my tribe was attacked and how it was attacked. Obviously it involved magic so I figured I would see if I could get an audience with the king and see if he knew anything. I would happily pay for such information with my services.
Backstory: As a young child, Ruvlo the red kobold was told to stay away from the sun. "It's blinding!" said his father. "Stay in the tunnels!" said his mother. But Ruvlo was determined to seek out the forbidden light in the sky. One day, while out foraging for food, he saw the sunrise in its beautiful light. While he had to make a mad dash for his burrow in order to not be blinded, the wondrous image of the sun burned deep into his mind. Silently, he began to worship the sun itself. He meditated, thinking only of that golden orb until at last,he reached a level of tranquility where he was ready to face the light. He stepped outside and embraced the light in its entirety. It enlightened his mind and warmed his body, granting him the powers of the sun. It also partially blinded him. But Ruvlo kept going, worshipping the sun.
Eventually, he heard a voice in his head. "My name is Lathander. I am the light in the sky, the sun that you so desperately want to see. I will grant you some of its power." Ruvlo was overjoyed. Testing his new powers, he came to the town of Masa, where he not only met many people but also yearned for a bigger purpose in his life.
Valerion was part of a small group of second-generation adventurers. He played kinda of a second fiddle, chronicling the more violent companions deeds, lending support where he could. He became separated from the group in the Feywild, and encountered a powerful Archfey he impressed with his music, he made a pact with her and has grown in power since. His friends were eventually defeated by their own hubris in trying to take down a dragon threatening a mining town. He alone escaped. He's been trying to work through his grief by playing gigs, and drinking a bit too much.
He has come to Masa to say goodbye to his friends, as this was the first place they started an adventure from.
- Martin - Wild Hunt Shifter - Ranger (Hunter) - Neutral Good
Martin is not just a ranger, but a forester, doing his best to look after a patch of wild forest near Masa as best he is able. Mostly, it involves tracking and killing dangerous beasts, and the occasional monster, but Martin has particularly strong feelings about vicious plants. He had a partner at one point who was torn apart by vines, and wicked trees laughed as they drank up his blood. Ever since, Martin has felt suspicious of any plant, and tends to be overly cautious with them.
His piece of wild forest is along the coast, and Martin spends the time where he can’t make it back to town (most nights) on the beach so as to avoid sleeping in those awful woods. (I have no idea where Masa is in relation to the coast, so I can switch something up here. Favored terrain stuff is hard without knowing the map).
Martin is in the town of Masa to resupply before going back into the woods, but he’s been dragging his feet. He is starting to lose his motivation, finding himself under appreciated and having few visible signs of success. He needs something new.
Wondrous item: gloves of climbing and swimming. Figured it could help him scouting around
"Greetings and Well Met! Say… could I trouble you for a bit of direction? First, perhaps allow me to ask where I find myself today? Ah… Masa! I see! Never heard of it! Am I still in Alcion at least? Oh good good… whew. You never know where you might arrive once you've been swallowed up by a banderhobb. I managed to claw my way out you see… but I expected to fall out of the bastards belly back into the hag's lair in the wood. Instead I find myself splashing about in a river that's trying to drown me. Still a preferable location wouldn't you say? Though I do hope my companions are able to defeat that ugly wood-wench and return that poor girl home to her parents. They do tend to depend on my special ability to help in such adventures - if you hear what I say aright. What what…? Ah yes… back to my request for direction… I see you have no time for a bard's dawdlin's… If you would be so kind… where might I locate a meal hereabouts? I'm outright famished!"
Name: Mordikaii (Character link: https://ddb.ac/characters/16268387/Dw22rt) Race: Warforged (I want to reflavour this as a new type of undeath, more explanation below) Class: Cleric - Death Domain Alignment: Lawful Neutral Background: Hermit Backstory:
Mordikaii heard a call, and followed it to a lost and forgotten tomb.
Within, Mordikaii found the writings and equipment left by some long lost necromancer.
Mordikaii dedicated himself to studying what he found, and discovered that the necromancer was in communication of an entity called The Undying Master.
The necromancer was in the process of undergoing a transformation that the The Undying Master had given instruction for, but what had happened and where the necromancer was now, was unknown.
Mordikaii decided to attempt to make contact with The Undying Master, and was successful.
The Undying Master had made the original call to Mordikaii, and had chosen him to be his new harbinger.
Mordikaii listened to the words of The Undying Master, recording them and adding them to those left by the necromancer.
Once he was ready, The Undying Master directed Mordikaii in the process of going through the transformation.
Once his form was remade, and his soul was bound to The Undying Master, Mordikaii was sent out to spread the knowledge of The Undying Master.
For now The Undying Master is content to make contact with those who seek knowledge of necromancy. And to build a good name among the poor and downtrodden. But one day the whole world will be brought into peace and unity under The Undying Master, either willingly or by the embrace of undeath.
So Mordikaii has emerged from his long hermitage, and set out to build a name for The Undying Master, and to convert all who would willingly do so, to follow his master.
Notes on reflavour/etc:
First, I understand if you don't want to deal with a character like this, or any reflavouring, but I am submitting this idea, just in case you like it.
So the warforged, don't need to sleep (only rest), eat, drink or even breath. They appear to be immortal from old age (isn't known for sure), and are immune to disease and resistant to poison.
So the idea would be, that Mordikaii has undergone a transformation that has turned him into a new type of undead, encased in a new skin of metal, to keep his now undead body from falling apart, all over the place. Functionally he would just be a warforged, with all the same capabilities and restrictions. but thematically he would be a kind of undead, but a little different to normal undead.
His god, The Undying Master, is currently weak and needs followers to start to regain his power. I was thinking of him being kind of a cross between the lich king from warcraft, and the ideal masters from the elder scrolls, but a d&d "lessor deity" version. His purpose is to one day bring everyone into unity, either by choice or by undeath. But for now he is content to build his power base, and to do that he is not seeking to make war or subjugate anyone, but to try and attract them to his side.
So Mordikaii would be preaching the good news of The Undying Master, the promise of everlasting "life", and a future of peace through unity. He would pay particular attention to spell casters and in particular those interested in necromancy. Trying to entice them to The Undying Master, with promises that the Master gives knowledge freely to those who are faithful.
So Mordikaii is planning to do adventuring work to help the peoples of the world, to build a good name for his god, and to travel to meet people so he can spread the word of his god.

I like the creativity of this and I am willing to reskin for creative purposes, we do already have a warforged and a rogue cleric, so I probably won't choose it on those grounds. If you want to submit more than 1 (or anyone wants to submit more than 1...no spamming, please), then I might spring for a different idea.
Name: Althus Pelivar Race: Simic Hybrid Class: Paladin (Oath of Redemption) Alignment: Chaotic Good Backstory:
Guardian Project field notes, Experiment #7, Althus Pelivar.
Subject seems well suited for the environment, no problems observed with biological grafts. Abilities are progressing nicely, multiple additional appendages for the subduing of multiple opponents have not been rejected.
Incident Report.
Althus recently captured several pirates that he defeated. After bringing them back to the village, he stripped them of weapons and released them after their leader promised to [sic] "not be bad anymore". While the subjects martial prowess and suitability are unquestionable, his mental state could use some development. Reporting him to local priest of Helm for guidance.
Final Notes.
By Helm's guidance, Althus has been sent to Masa on a journey that will hopefully jumpstart his mental growth. Though I do not know what could possibly be of use in that city, our Lord commands it and so it will be so.
Always Watchful, Head Researcher Davernoc
Why is the character in Masa?: Althus was ordered by Helm to go to Masa on a mission of protection, though Althus does not know exactly what he should be protecting. Wondrous Item: Dread Helm. Interested in acquiring Gauntlets of Ogre Power.

Yeah I figured this character might not be a good fit, but I thought it would be worth submitting just in case, because I know you are a great DM :)
My mother is a prominent judge in the Azorius Senate, and there were many high hopes for me in my community that I would one day ascend to her position. Since birth, I have been trained in the philosophy of law and order and to separate fact from emotion. While in training as a teen, I witnessed many judgments being brought down by the judge I worked for. One such judgment struck me as particularly unfair, when a merchant's ware were confiscated by the court.
Through my family connections, I sought an audience with the Supreme Judge, who agreed with my understanding of the matter and overturned the finding of the trial judge. This did not sit well with my mother or the majority of the Senate, who could not see the spirit of the law from the letter of the law. My path grew increasingly difficult, as I have a strong belief in justice as sometimes requiring the bending of the law. Eventually, the scorn of my schoolmates and my low standing in the community caused my mother to issue me an ultimatum: either stick to the approved path, or leave training in Senate. Frustrated, and sick of judgment for deeds I knew to be right, I left home to seek lands that are in need of my particular talents, and hopefully prove my worth and capabilities to my mother and the Senate, and change their mindsets in the process.
I've come to Masa simply as part of my wondering, having heard of a band of adventurers looking to change the world for the better. If I can join them and succeed, maybe they'll finally listen to me...
------------
Willing to change classes if necessary, backstory is pretty flexible on that point.
My favorites so far are the shifter ranger, simic paladin, and kobold monk/cleric in terms of character design and fit. Those aren't the only things I'll take into consideration on the final decision, but I thought I'd give a little feedback in case anyone wants to alter or make a new submission.
What I like about these: They offer easy entry into the campaign. They fill some weak or missing roles in the group. They have a great misfit vibe. They are unlikely heroes.
Raised by a hippie dippy community, and pushed out of the nest at 18 to explore the world's wonders. Bright and cheery, she's been able to make (animal) friends in every town she goes. People, not so much, but she's always happy to show them how awesome she is (sometimes it doesn't work but it's their loss!) It's been 2 years of the nomadic life and she's still enjoying every moment.
She has no plans other than making her way north. What other way is there to travel than in a straight line?
Getting my girlfriend in the dungeons & dragons it's a first time player for her do you know of any online groups or could put me in the right direction I have never played online myself but I have played in home lots and lots of time

Backstory:
Raised by a hippie dippy community, and pushed out of the nest at 18 to explore the world's wonders. Bright and cheery, she's been able to make (animal) friends in every town she goes. People, not so much, but she's always happy to show them how awesome she is (sometimes it doesn't work but it's their loss!) It's been 2 years of the nomadic life and she's still enjoying every moment.
She has no plans other than making her way north. What other way is there to travel than in a straight line?
In Masa just as part of her wonderings.
Magic item: Gulthias Staff maybe?
The deadline is looming. Last chance to get in any character ideas before I make my final picks.
Thanks for the submissions everyone! I have chosen Althus and Martin to join the campaign. Sorry if you were not picked. Until next time!
