While waiting for Asmodean to respond, Lady SwiftArrow is idly eavesdropping on the conversation at a nearby table. The stout dwarf and female elf sitting at the table look likely to have some gossip. The elf looks slightly bedraggled, indicating recent arrival in town. The dwarf is definitely from out of town. L SwiftArrow recognises aspects of the dwarf that indicate he is a follower of Marthammoor Duin. The mountains the call home are a long way from this inn.
a lull in the noise in the inn allows L SwiftArrow to clearly hear a snippet of the conversation... “Sounds to me like you've had some kind of adventure delivering that wagon, not to mention talk of a missing friend, a mysterious Wave Echo Cave and something about a spider. I reckon it'd be an interesting tale if you're willing to share it. Of course I don't mean to pry, just sounds much more dramatic than the walking I've been doing for the past couple of weeks. Although the flora and fauna are lovely in these parts."
This snippet confirms L SwiftArrow's belief that they will have usable gossip and spurs her to leave Asmodean to mosey over to the table and introduce herself in the hope of joining the conversation.
She arrives at the table and leans towards the pair. “I couldn’t help but hear some of your conversation”, she says. “I'm Lady SwiftArrow. I arrived in town this evening intending to have a short respite from the aloneness of the wilds. I sense that respite may not be long. There is a certain tension in the inn. Perhaps you've noticed it. Perhaps the tension s linked to your missing friend.” She pauses to wait for a response to her introduction, hoping her forthrightness in admitting she was eavesdropping doesn’t put the pair off.
There is not a lot you can gauge from the lady listening in to your conversation. Beyond the fact she appears newly arrived herself, she carries a longbow across her back with her a quarter staff firmly gripped in hand.
@Naivara
The innkeeper sees your gesture and nods to his wife. She begins making her way there around the same time Lady SwiftArrow approaches the table.
@Virran
Virran's corner vantage sees him well placed to overhear a miner - Lanar, judging by the conversation - angrily complain about the lack of recent work. “Ever since those orc raiders have been seen on the east end of the Triboar Trail, the mines have all shut down. The dwarves think the area's likely to be over run if nothin's done. The townmaster's looking for someone to run 'em off, but with the Redbrands around...” Lanar shoots a furtive glance around in case a Redbrand happened to be nearby, sees you and mumbles, “No offense - I got no problem with hard working orc kind such as yerself.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Naivara nods in the direction of the inn keeper’s wife, who approaches, whilst appraising the newcomer. Stig’s eyes on Lady Swiftarrow had not gone unnoticed, and in a crowd like this, it is likely that a conversation be overheard. Naivara hopes that it fell upon the right ears. Insight check: 18, persuasion check: 15.
”Or perhaps, Stig, that divine intervention will continue on for us this evening..
“Greetings, Lady Swiftarrow. I am Naivara Moonwhisper. You say you have spent some time out in the wilds? We are looking to find some information about the Rockseeker brothers, who are supposed to be camped nearby to this town. Have you come across them in your travels? I would, personally, love to hear what you have seen and heard on your journey. Seeing as you have heard much of my story, perhaps you can enlighten us with your perspectives on this town, and this ‘tension’ you see? Allow me to buy you a drink and I will be an avid listener.
”But please, excuse me for a moment first while I take the opportunity to organise our stay in the town and enquire as to the innkeeper’ wife’s knowledge of this tension you speak of.”
Naivara takes the opportunity to request another round of drinks from the inkeeper’s wife, though she makes hers a soda. She feels that the way this night is panning out, she should keep her wits about her. She also takes this chance to enquire about a couple of nights’ accomodation at the inn; whether the innkeeper and his wife have any knowledge of the Rockseekers, or the way to Cragmore Castle; what they can tell us of the Redbrands; and whom may be the best person to approach in the town for all the gossip. She says this loud enough for Lady Swiftarrow and Stig to hear, so that they might be certain of the questions she desires answers to. Insight check: 21, persuasion check: 9
Whilst this conversation is going on, she scans the room. Investigation Check: 8 Are there further eavesdroppers? Are there suspicious looking individuals about the place? Redbrands even? Just how high are these tensions that Lady Swiftarrow speaks of? Until it was mentioned, she hadn’t noticed. Hopefully Virran is gaining some good insight.
Virran approaches the miners. "No Offence taken. If its not to sensitive, who are the Redbrands and why would they be stopping people from sorting out these raiders?"
When Naivara Moonwhisper (NM) returns her attention to the conversation, Lady SwiftArrow (LSA) responds to NM’s comment on the tension in the inn.
“Naivara Moonwhisper — May I call you Naivara? — My perception of tension is based on a number of things I have heard and seen.”
Before continuing, LSA surreptitiously investigates the room to see who may may be eavesdropping by pretending to adjust her travel gear. She also visibly adjusts the knives in their sheaths before re-gripping her quarter staff and using it to lean in closer so she can speak more quietly.
Investigation +13 (ooc +3 if this is more than passive investigation)
Perception +15
LSA continues in as low a voice as possible to still be heard over the hum In the inn, aware of the brief silence that allowed her to hear the snippet she repeated in her introduction: “As I came into town I noted a ruined manor on the hill close to town. I believe the manor is called Tresendar Manor. I thought this might be a good location to set up camp as the manor is on top of several steep embankments. I thought there may be little activity there as the manor is a ruin. Being at the top of steep embankments makes it somewhat more defensible, if necessary, than being in an open field or in the forest.
I was disappointed to find signs of traffic that has worn a light path that disappears into the embankment. A pitiful attempt has been made to hide the path where it enters the embankment. This might fool ordinary eyes, but I was able to see the path and the attempt to conceal it.
My experience says such concealment is usually a sign of dubious aims... may be even treacherous intentions. This discovery contributes to my perception of tension, but there's more... “
LSA pauses, waiting for NM and her companion to evaluate her information. Perhaps they will have questions to ask, not that LAS can add anything to what she has already said.
Trilena Stonehill returned with the drinks and placed them on the table in front of your group. As was becoming a common reaction whenever the Redbrands were mentioned, the innkeeper's wife cautiously looked around the room. “I can see you are new in town, what with so many questions. But you look like you can handle yourselves well enough...” She pulled up a seat at the table. You study her carefully, but find nothing out of the ordinary about her. “Ask anyone in this 'ere room and they'll tell you - the Redbrands are keen to take control of Phandalin and will do anything necessary. Just the other day they killed Thel Drendrar! And just for protecting his family! For some reason, the only person in town they don't mess around with is Halia Thornton - she runs the Miner's Exchange, the closest thing we have to authority around here. She works late, so won't likely turn up here, but I’d put speaking to her on the top of your list.
Trilena rises from her seat and makes to leave. “As for your other questions, I’d pay Qelline Alderleaf a visit. If anyone know's the goings on around Phandalin, it's the halfling. Not much gets past that one. You'll find Alderleaf Farm on the south-eastern edge of town. She might know where to find the Rockseeker brothers or this Crag... Crag... this castle you mentioned.
“I’ll be back with some keys to yours rooms. Your friend Sildar stopped by a few hours ago and arranged for your lodgings. He left a description of you three - she indicates you, Stig and Virran, but her eyes also take in SwiftArrow - and said to tell you he'd be back once he'd met with Harben.” You take a sip of your drink as she leaves. There is nothing, and no one, else who appears to be interested in your group at this time.
Lanar spits. “The Redbrands have the arms and numbers to set to on those bloody orcs, but what do they do?! They kill honest wood carvers and harass the locals. Even if we were to try ourselves, we’d return to find our own homes taken right from under us. Hard to know which is worse: the Redbrands or ****in’ orcs!”
All conversation abruptly stops as Tolben Stonehill approaches the bard and leans in close. Of course, he intentionally allows his voice to carry.
“Will ye be playin' for us tonight, Master Bard, or are we paying gold to watch ye stare at yer own reflection?” This causes raucous laughter and table banging from around the room. “I tell ye what... while ye manage yer stage fright, I’ll ask me fine wife to sing us a ditty or two. Voice of an angel. Should yer fear disappear,” this again to laughter, “We’ll still see about those lodgings and yer meal.” As Trilena dances up to the stage, Asmodean moves to take her spot just vacated alongside Stig, Naivara and Swift.
Sending a glance toward the Bard, smiling and shaking her head at the loss of her own GP for the sake of a musician that does not seem to be performing, despite her shock and frustration upon hearing that the Redbrands were killing townsfolk for protecting their families. Naivara asks Swift,
”My Lady, if I may ask, what are your thoughts on the Redbrands? Do you think this town might need saving?
Naivara catches Virran’s eye and waves him over. She gestures Swift and Stig.
“Maybe in helping out these here townsfolk, we will stumble upon more clues as to the whereabouts of the Rockseekers and perhaps even be led a step closer to finding Gundren.”
LSA replies: “I certainly think the red brands are a worthy target. Even if they don’t lead us anywhere they are affecting the lives of these people. A rangers calling is to protect people on the outskirts of civilisation. I believe Phandalin fits, but even if it didn’t these red brands seem to be vicious rascals:It’s hard to see any reason why they would kill someone for defending their family.
It would be nice to know the whole story, but we must at least bring them in. What happens then will need someone with more skills than I to judge who has been wronged. If they resist, well.... we'll have to use whatever force is necessary. Hopefully it won’t come to a fight, though I expect it will.
With the tension in the inn tonight, we may meet the red brands wonder than later. I wouldn't be surprised if they muscled in here tonight”
LSA continues: “I'm concerned that they dont interfere with Halia Thornton. That needs more investigation. Perhaps they’re in cahoots. Or, perhaps they are black mailing her. “
"Right, Thanks for the heads up. Do you know who is in charge of them and where one would find this individual?" One Virran receives the answer from Lanar he wanders over to Naivara and crew. "I know the type of people the Redbrands are. not to keen to see the path that will lead to. I agree that dealing with them will bear profit for us one kind or another."
As the innkeeper's wife finishes her number, the crowd cheers in appreciation! Trilena is obviously a favourite and a regular. The entertainment done, a shadowy figures blocks the doorway as several townsfolk move to leave. The shadow steps forward and surveys the room, the light now showing him to be a human male, complete with sword and chainmail. The tension in the room, suddenly heightened, dissolves with a sign - this figure doesn’t have the telltale red cloak that identifies one as a Redbrand.
Looking in the direction of Naivara and company, the man walks towards them, recognizing them as the twilight ‘shapeshifters’ who recently walked through the town square - he smirks at his own memory. “Name’s Brandywine,” he says.
A short time passes. Most of the Inn’s patrons have already taken their leave and the fire crackles peacefully in its hearth. Tolben and Trilena make a final round with drinks before retreating to enjoy each other's company close to the fire's warmth. Tolbin raises a glass in your direction, and moments later Sildar Hallwinter stands before your group. “Wonderful,” the old warrior says amiably. “I am glad to find you arrived and settled... and alongside new friends too, it seems. Splendid, splendid!” Sildar looks at each person in turn as if mentally taking a catalogue. “ Two clerics, a ranger, a warrior, a bard and a rogue. Maybe this time round death shall not be such a close visitor.” Did the innkeeper mention the lodgings I have secured on your behalf? It was the least I could manage, given my future if you hadn't arrived when you did. If your new acquaintances are looking to join you, good Virran and Naivara, they are welcome to make use of the accommodation as well.”
Tolben arrives with a ale for Sildar, then returns to the fireside. Sildar pulls a seat over and sits down hard. “I have news - much of it idle gossip to be sure. I have spent the last few hours in discussion with the townmaster, Harbin Wester. It is clear from that conversation that Phandalin does indeed require leadership... pompous old fool! In my capacity as leader of the Lords’ Alliance, I shall assume his role and attempt to bring back law and order to this settlement. The Redbrands worry me, as does Harbin’s view of them. Still, on other matters I am now certain that no word of Gundren has passed through Phandalin, nor have the Rockseeker brothers come to town recently.
“As for my own reasons in coming to Phandalin, I have troubling news. I was worried Iarno had suffered a similar fate to Gundren‘s, but he appears to have made it this far. But that is where the good news ends. Iarno Albrek disappeared two months ago while exploring the area around the manor. No word, no sightings, not even a body to be found. I know you have many tasks, and there is more I should ask of you in the morning, but please... I ask you to find him, or what’s left of him if something killed him, and bring Iarno back. Iarno is..was.. a short, dark-bearded human wizard. He's somewhere in his thirties.”
Sildar looks tired and drawn as his downs the last sips of his ale. “I am sure you have questions, but they must wait until morning. I need rest. Find me in the morning, if you will, either here or at the Townmaster's Hall. Whatever you choose, best make sure you are prepared.” Sildar climbs the stairs and retires for the night. You are all left to your own thoughts, but bed seems like a clever option.
"... Brandywine Brutebane, but ye can call me Bwurrb, ... so long as ye don't call me late for breakfast." He chuckles at his own fighting-man joke [OOC: sometimes also know as Dad jokes]. "Me-saw ye a-commin' in as I was taking a quick prayer at the Lady Tymora's Shrine, and BrWBrB [OOC: pronounced Bwurrb] , methought to meself, mayhap these are a crew who might welcome another pair of arms and eyes for whatever they may be a-seeking. And although not normally loquacious, BrwBrb motors on. "But my, these townfolk be edgy about these Redbrand ruffians be they not?" He looks around at the townsfolk in the tavern, who are still in the process at relaxing after his shadowy, and somewhat melodramatic entrance. "... But then I hear they have good cause for bein' a tad edgy, true enough!" And having exhausted about a week's worth of fighting-man words, he falls silent, waiting to see how the 'shapeshifters' respond.
[OOC / OOOPS - had not refreshed page before posting - but as it turns out it's not that out of joint, other than coming after your update post. <sigh>]
Naivara stands somewhat perplexed at Brandywine’s entrance, along with that of Sildar and his somber news. Did she cease her drinking quickly enough? This day has certainly been a long one and she is very ready for her 4 hour rest.
“Sir Brandywine, your reputation precedes you. I have long known of your form and I must say, it is a pleasure to finally meet you. You had us startled, as we thought you were one of the very Redbrands we were just speaking of. We are certainly glad that you are not, as a night’s rest certainly sounds appealing.
”Stig, Swift, Brandywine, you are welcome to rest here in our lodgings and gather with us in the morning, if you are able. I am sensing that we have some common ground here and there is certainly value in us standing together if we are going to take on the Redbrands. It seems a worthy mission by all accounts.
”I would like to head out to speak with Qelline Alderleaf on the South-East edge of town at daybreak, so that I can question her more on the Rockseeker’s whereabouts. I am certain she will be out working on her farm from dawn. As we were told, she may have knowledge on Cragmore Castle. I would love for at least one of you to join me.
”We shall aim to meet back here following breakfast and hopefully catch Sildar so he can explain his knowledge further. We will then map out our day and confirm our plans. Let’s all check that we are equipped and ready, in case danger does find us on the morrow. Good night.”
LSA responds to those remaining: "I am grateful for the offer of accommodation. It's late and I would rather not set up camp in the dark - especially with the news of the Redbrands recent actions.
I agree we need to speak with Qelline Alderleaf, but I wonder if it would be better to first show the Redbrands we won't be bullied. I think they will do their best to thwart our moves if we don't act early. My preference would be to deal with the Redbrands then pay a visit to Alderleaf farm.
Perhaps Naivara could visit Alderleaf Farm with whomever chooses to go with her while some of us stay and pay a visit to the Redbrands. I feel a group might have more success in the Redbrand visit than a lone person. Splitting our tasks might achieve results more quickly. But.. if we intend to work together I am willing to put my preference aside in the Redbrand matter as the group decides"
LSA takes a key. "I hope to see you all in the early morning and hear your thoughts on possible actions. It would be good to discuss this before Naivara leaves for Alderleaf Farm. as she has indicated, she intends to be at the farm by daybreak - so breakfast will be early!"
LSA also turns and leaves for her room, taking her accoutrements with her
Okay, so who's our leader? Based on Charisma (can't see Naivara) it's Asmodean at 16 - but do we want a Bard as leader?
I'd thought BrWBrB was just going to be grunt - but with a 13 Charisma (can't see Naivara) it looks like we other 4 are about equals - 11, 12 and 2x13 - so I'll play BrWBrB in a somewhat more "leaderly" role.
BrWBrB is as provisioned as I think he needs to be (but off-line I'm going to experiment with armour). Don't have food. DM: Are you playing "feed me" rules, or is it assumed we can live off the land. BrWBrB has 2x50' rope. BrWBrB has all the weapons he thinks he needs, some handheld and some thrown.
At this moment, BrWBrB is unencumbered at 76lbs, about 30% of his unencumbered limit.
BrWBrB's game-intell doesn't add much to what you already know re the Redbrands - bad news, kill fairly indiscriminately, probably kidnappers, almost certainly rapers and pillagers (say, I'm kind-of coming to feel we might like these guys ... joking) hang out at the Sleeping Giant, actual lair unknown - but it seems the Manor is a strong candidate. BrWBrB is told the Redbrands have "watchers" everywhere [Hence his tardiness in joining you all] and that they are "Numerous and savage".
BrWBrB's other intell is mysterious and possibly apocryphal - A Banshee called Agatha who is vain but knows the whereabouts of Bowgentle's spellbook, which is, apparently, useful for nothing other than archiving (thanks heaps Sister Garaele). BTW Sister Garaele is a really spunky young elf who has the absolute hots for BrWBrB. If, for reasons I can't imagine, we decided to pursue this Banshee and her archival spellbook, the hot young eleven Sister of the order of the Lady of Tymora, whom BrWBrB can seduce with a mere glance, may have something to assist us.
BrWBrB's vote is we arm up and descend on this "Manor" where the ruffian Redbrands may be holed up - possibly with either the live Iarno Albrek, or with his corpse, and possibly with the family of murdered Thel Dendrar who died defending that family.
It's pretty clear, given his strength, wisdom, charisma and expendability (we have other clerics), that Stig McStobel must be our vanguard. BrWBrB will be right behind him poking him into a trot (he can only move at 25' walking - stumpy legs!)
I'll put up thoughts on leader, single and double marching order, who's our scout (Lady SA for sure) and who's our skulker (S/B Virran, but not sure how skulky a half-orc can be) once Naivara comes out of the shadows. [HP for Naivara also pls DM].
One way or another, without spooking the townsfolk, we need to get ourselves 2 or 3 red cloaks to allow easier infiltration / town movement under the watchful watcher eyes. Just suggesting.

Ok all, what are your plans?
If you intend to venture out somewhere, use this rest period to:
1. work out your supplies,
2. Are more supplies needed?
3. What is your total encumbrance - you, plus gear. Close enough is good enough, just let me know.
<sigh>]
OOC: For some reason, I can't view the luscious Naivara's dope sheet (AKA Character sheet) ???
Naivara turns and heads to bed.
LSA also turns and leaves for her room, taking her accoutrements with her
All OOC.
