Chapter I - Some Favors You Just Don't Get to Skip Out On
"ESTHER! SOMEBODY HERE TO SEE YOU."
The distinct bellowing of Selena's 8-year-old son, Mateyu, could be heard all across Edington. The boy's vocal capacity made others wonder if he was a good candidate for some kind of herald or perhaps an auctioneer. They had little hope of him carrying on the family business, given his slight build and preference for anything other than hard work.
It was an early fall afternoon, and there was a stew bubbling in the kitchen and Selena's elderly grandfather, Naldy (short for Reginald), rocking on the porch. He was practically deaf and a tad crotchety, but he liked Esther well enough to slip her sweets every now and again. Though it was probably only because he liked Vanstock even more and the old druid was constantly worried about her. The two could often be found huddled together, plotting on how they could "improve" her life in this way or that. All goodnatured and well-intentioned, but meddlesome.
Esther and Selena are standing at the forge practicing their craft when they hear the boy call out.
Selena shakes her head at the vocal intrusion and exasperatedly says to the universe, "Why can't he simply walk back here to let us know? How many times must I tell him to stop yelling like that?" She bellows back with a simliar knack for volume, saying, "Mateyu! Get back here right now!" The sound of a quick-footed child could then be heard rushing away from the house and across the yard.
Selena turns around and looks straight at Esther with a surprised face asking, "Did he just run off? That little shit!"
The More You Know: This is a spoiler section. Throughout the game, this is where you will find:
extra info
dice rolls (asking for and receiving)
Out of Character (OOC) comments (where you as a player need to tell me the DM something and vice versa, e.g. a funny, character/sheet questions, etc.)
Sometimes pictures
and more
You can include one in your post by clicking the exclamation point in the editor's top bar. (The dice roller can also be found there at the end.)
Your Turn: Now it's your turn to continue the story. You will be reacting to what I have written from the first-person perspective, e.g. please write up as much or as little as you think you need to convey Esther's reactions and/or movements to her current circumstances. Sometimes they move the story forward, sometimes not, it can depend/vary.
This is a learning time (for us both really), so I may give helpful hints along the way. Be sure to read through other game threads or my other threads to get a feel for how others do it.
I'm looking for you to do role-playing and character interactions, so don't be afraid to make conversation and describe her inner thoughts.
We are writing this story together, but you are acting out/crafting a character within it. Feel free to ask me questions along the way and just try stuff out.
Autumn is my favorite season. When others see death in the darker days, I feel the call of rest and hibernation. The cold air brings new smells and I feel more alert and awakened to my surroundings. Nothing is more dreadful than the weight of hot summer days. I am at my happiest and brightest in the fall and winter. My heart is filled with joy and feelings of family as Selena and I work side by side, and Naldy rocks peacefully on the porch. The heat from the forge is a lovely warmth on this cold day. Back in my wandering years, every moment was devoted to survival. Now my focus on proficiency and the love of craft breaths spirit into my days. In rare instances, especially in the fall, I occasionally hear the call of wilderness again. It runs through my veins, and warms my skin with the excitement of adventure. In these moments I have learned to stop and breath, and remember the goodness and stability of family and vocation.
Selena, Naldy, and Mateyu have become everything to me. I was brought here with perfect timing, and I bask every day in the relief I feel at belonging.
As I hear Mateyu calling, and see Selena bristle at his shrill little voice, I chuckle inside. I have always delighted in his twinkle-bell tones. His sweetness and passion ignite a playfulness in me that I had forgotten until we met. Happy childhood memories return when I am running or wrestling with him. We also share a passion for food. Bacon is his favorite. How can I resist a child who loves bacon.
As he runs away from us now, I hear the excitement in his little voice. A part of me feels his happiness. Another side of me feels Selena's dread. A mother's anguish is disfiguring her face. I have learned this is a common response in Moms. Galloping children cause them fear. Normally I laugh at her reaction. But in this case it is well-founded... Mateyu is too far away. His excitement causes me to feel guarded this time. My senses heighten. The bear in me raises a giant nose to the wind.
I've read a few other threads to see how this works. I couldn't figure out if players decide to roll, and just tell the DM, and then take the roll, or do we request a roll, and wait for DM response that gives permission? Here's where my technical knowledge falls short. Like I said, Bram always told me what to do next. I'm thinking it's a good time to trust in my perception ability, so is that something I would roll for at this point? I don't want to bog down play every time I want to take a pause and notice my surroundings. But at the same time, I want to take a pause and notice my surroundings. Also, this is really fun!
That was amazing! Love that the bear is rising within her and you get to wax poetic about Fall. *swoon* ;] ;] Great first go!
Slight tweak, cuz I misled you a bit. I realized that I didn't explain myself quite enough about writing in first person.
Conversation = first person
Inner thoughts = third person
You're the narrator of her story and you get to decide how and when she acts/talks. You don't necessarily need a roll to move about or go look or pick up something. If you reach a point where you're wondering if it's possible or not, then ask if a roll is needed. (Msg me even) I'll also ask you to roll for anything of importance. You walking around the house and greeting a visitor can all be done with passive stats. No need for anything technical, just interact as you would normally in the world, just be sure to let me (your reader) know what's happening.
Make sense? All of what you wrote was great! Just slap into 3rd person narrative and you're golden! No need to rewrite. Let's forge ahead. Woot!
"Oi, Estha! It's me, Arnie from the pub," says a square-faced, bearded hunk of middle-aged man as he turns the corner of the house. Shyly laughing at his own joke, "I ain't wearin' my apron, so I'm not sure any of ya can recognize me. Mind if I come round and chat? Got a favor to ask - could be worth some coin to ya."
Seeing Selena first, "Oh. Apologies, Ms. Selena. Naldy sent me round back when the boy runoff. Hope I'm not interrupting anything."
Her mentor had whirled back around at the sound of Arnie's voice, "No, no Arnie. You are welcome here. That boy of mine, however, may be losing his privileges. I'll go find him and give you two a chance to chat." Selena then heads off in the direction of the running steps, shouting when she gets a bit further away from the forge, "MATEYU! GET BACK HERE."
Arnie then nods his head at Esther, "Like I said. Got some work fer ya, if you're interested?"
"ARNIE! You clean up pretty nice. I hardly recognized you with your knickers on brother." They shared a belly laugh, both remembering a night when Arnie's patrons enjoyed his company on the "party side" of the bar, after his son was born. Since that night, no mystery remained beneath Arnie's trousers. By the end of ten tankards, and the setting moon, he'd shared his endowments on a dare.
Arnie's chuckles died slowly, "Esther, darlin', if only you knew the joy that night brought me. Thank you again for working behind the bar."
Esther walked him toward the back deck, "Thanks for keeping me in mind Arnie. You know I appreciate the opportunity to build my coin chest."
"Aaaww, my sweet Esther. You know you's my favorite. No one deserves it more than you. So... about the details...."
Bwhahahaa I'm totally gonna make this cannon, cuz it's too damn good.
However, NPCs (non-player characters) are run by the DM. You're just in charge of Esther. So, I'm gonna redo the above just a bit to make it work for the story. Someday I look forward to playing in one of your games. Cuz, if drunken debauchery is involved, I'm in. ;] ;]
Reeeeewwind.
"ARNIE! You clean up pretty nice. I hardly recognized you with your knickers on brother." They shared a belly laugh, both remembering a night when Arnie's patrons enjoyed his company on the "party side" of the bar after his son was born. Since that night, no mystery remained beneath Arnie's trousers. By the end of ten tankards, and the setting moon, he'd shared his endowments on a dare.
Arnie wipes a tear away as his chuckles died slowly, "Estha, darlin', if only you knew the joy that night brought me. Thank ye again for working behind the bar."
Esther walked him toward the back deck, "Thanks for keeping me in mind Arnie. You know I appreciate the opportunity to build my coin chest."
"Aaaww, my sweet Estha. Ye know yew's my favorite. No one deserves it more than ya. However, that's not why I'm here, buuuut bringing coin to ye purse is still the main goal."
He turns to look at her with eagerness and delight, "You know the Baron's Ball a comin', right? Well, bards and performers have traveled from all over the Province to audition for a spot. Most of em are amazin', but in groups, they can be trouble with a big B. I've got a whole herd gonna be here tomorrow, and as I know ye can handle yourself, was wonderin' if you could help keep the peace for a night, maybe two? Azura and I would pay ye well. The kids are gonna stay with me folks until they're all gone."
"Of course dear friend!" Esther's arms spread wide to encourage a hug. "For you, always YES!"
Both of them knew this was a welcome adventure for Esther. Her spirit required an occasional night of excitement. She hugged Arnie with gusto, and immediately anticipated the exhilarating energy of scouring the crowd with highly trained eyes; a seek and destroy mission at the core of her watchful attendance. As she knew from experience, the secret to a prosperous, crowded night, was in the craft of early detection. Esther was a master at zeroing in on the over-indulged BEFORE they caused much trouble.
"Thanks again for the offer, Arnie. Your a true friend for remembering me. Smart of ya to move the kids away for a day or two. I will look forward to a fun couple of nights in your company."

The following day arrives and there are musicians of all kinds beginning to arrive outside the Broken Drum Pub. It's located in the decent part of Edington, near the finer eateries and their performance hall. The tavern has a reputation for showcasing up and coming singers, so when the Baron's Ball comes round it books up quickly. Esther knows this pub well inside and out.
Husband and wife, Arnie and Azura Karninov, own the pub and as it's the busiest night of the year. She knows that two of their relatives, Raegar and Greager are helping out, as well.
Main Entryway
Common area
Walking up to the door Esther can see a dozen or so old drum shells, now happily sprouting seasonal herbs and veg. The double doors are thrown open to the cool fall air and the sound of music drifts from inside. When she walks in towards the welcome desk, she can see a new welcome sign written in a half dozen languages, but no one is there to greet her or the guests, and several are waiting around to be served.
Commotion can be heard in the common area. The space features a long table for up to 10 and a dozen or so four-tops strategically placed around the well-lit room. As Esther makes her way towards the sounds, it's standing room only. This is highly unusual for early evening, but the wood stage is already filled with a halfling troop whipping the crowd up.
Esther spots one of the relatives (possibly Raegar) working the bar. He waves her over frantically and hands her an armload of beers, gesturing broadly to the tables in different directions of the room, "Deliver these for me?! I can't find my cousin, anywhere!"
Dice rolling time!
Esther must choose what to do next. (I won't always prompt you, but as this is your first time rolling, so I'm gonna treat this like a tutorial. So excited for you!)
Does she deliver them, refuse, or something else?
If she does, please make a Dexterity Check (Acrobatics) to navigate the busy room without spilling. You do this by using the dice roller above. (black square with three dots) Use the first tab and enter in your acrobatics bonus (Add to Result area) from the skills section of your character sheet.
Once entered, hit the OK button and it will enter a formula onto your post. Don't mess with it or it will say it's been tampered with.
Example: DEX Acrobatics Check = roll]1d20+2[/roll (It will be surrounded by brackets [ ] )
When you finish and hit the Post Reply button, it will show the result. You can always post the formula and then add your character's reaction by editing it.
Esther had intended to walk about the place for awhile, in order to size up the situation. "Are you Raegar?"Leaning across the bar, she slaps him on the shoulder."I'm happy to help out this time,"smiling good-naturedly,"but don't expect any fine waitress skills from these ham hocks."She raises both arms in a bicep-revealing stance.
Although she's uncomfortable with the situation, Esther decides it might be fun to try the balancing feat. Besides, with her skills of observation, she can use the opportunity to appear vulnerable to the ne'er-do-wells while she assesses the crowd.
That was fun! And thank you for tutoring on this roll stuff. I actually explained Esther's decision a little. Not sure if that is necessary. And then rolled, but it placed my roll first, above the narrative. Probably just a slip of my keypad. Anyway, on my sheet it says my DEX is 12 plus 1, so I entered the plus 1 and that's all. What was the "drop dice" or "advantage" part of that dice roll pop-up screen? I just left it alone.
Raegar nods his head at the mention of his name and yells over the crowd, "I get ye, I get ye. Try not to drop them all. Once yur done, I'll go get Azura for ye."
He pushes an armload of beer onto her, and the slippery bastards all plunk right back down onto the bar like her arms were never there. A great clunk momentarily turns the crowd towards the bar. Raegar looks around and hands her a towel saying, "Shall we try that again, lass? Maybe do a wee bit of stretchin' first with those ham hocks."
Explaining her inner thoughts is perfect and allows me to better weave a story. Great job.
Glad you liked the tutorial and that it helped. Wherever your cursor is when you hit the OK button is where it's going to place the roll. Just be sure to doublecheck its location for optimal placing. ;]
Your line of thinking is spot on. Though, there is a special spot that totals your acrobatics modifier, which can be different than just your DEX modifier. So, when you look at your sheet, find your Skills section. It's the long list right on the front page. One of them is called acrobatics and plug that number into the roller. (The numbers are the same right now, but as you level-up they may be different.)
This time, your roll didn't quite beat the action's DC or Difficulty Check, so I'm going to allow you to take a pause and redo. This may not always be possible (mostly not), but sometimes you can ask or RP that you're going to try again. This is a great tool in non-combat moments.
Drying herself off helped a bit. The glasses were still slick, but Esther manages to carry them all to the tables. The amount of beer in each glass, however, did vary upon arrival.
Once the frothiest of liquids were more or less delivered, Raeger waved her over with another towel. He brought her one more for good measure; wrapped inside are a few coins from the tip jar to smooth her rattled nerves. "There ya go, lass. Ye're better at tending to the drinks than carryin' 'em, that's for sure." He gave her a wink and a chuckle, "I'll goh find Azura for ya. Hang those hams up here for a bit and sip on a wee brew whilst you wait."
Pls add 2 silver and 3 copper coins to your sheet.
-----------------
Another fork in the road, if you decide to drink the beer.
Alcohol Addiction Check. Please make two saving throw rolls, then average them:
1) Constitution (dice roller)
2) Wisdom (dice roller)
Hand calculate and type out the final sum, pls.
The saving throw modifiers are on the main sheet to the left, towards the top.
As this is one of your flaws, this will come up if you are trying to multitask while imbibing or trying to drink in moderation.
The halfing trio has now turned into a quintet of gnomes banging out some drinking songs to get the place hoppin'. She can hear Azura before she sees her, even over the crowd and music. Sounds like the kitchens are experiencing a few bumps and the dishwasher may have just quit.
Esther has known Azura for a while now, and at every opportunity, the half-elf insists that she's just a simple tavern owner. However, the way she always hides her softly pointed ears under her long raven hair and a well-honed knife at her back speaks differently. Esther can tell from their conversations that she's no stranger to magic or even adventuring, but she hardly ever mentions her life before coming to Edgington. Patrons mention sometimes that her bronze skin catches and keeps a bit more light than the tavern's windows and candles cast.
She finally comes over to the bar once there is a lull in the music, "As you can see, we're overbooked. Thank you to my husband for that!" She playfully slaps your arm, "Just help me keep them from burning the place down for the next ten hours or so. They should be gone in the morning." She flashes you a big grin and says a quick prayer to her goddess.
Azura comes round the bar and drapes her arm around Esther's shoulder, speaking into her ear, "The husband says to offer you 25 gold, plus tips, but I think you're worth a little more than that. Whatda think?"
RP Training: This is an opportunity to negotiate a better price if Esther is so willing.
To do so, you must choose a path to take. Options:
1) Role-play out the scenario really well (you've got to convince me your DM to give you more)
2) Roll a Persuasion Skill Check and role-play (You take a chance on rolling, but buffer it with some convincing)
3) Straight roll a Persuasion Check (You take a chance on rolling, leave your choice open to the fates of calamity, mediocrity, or good fortune)
Now, given that we are here to role-play and work on our writing skills, my hope is you choose 1 or 2. Three is perfectly acceptable, but I may judge you a tiny bit. No pressure. LOL
Again, this is something I will not prompt you for in the future and is a good one to remember.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Insomnia, and a hot toddy at 1:00 am. I think this will increase my persuasion skills Mistress!! Glad you enjoyed the itty bitty reference :) BTW, do not choose a man that snores. If you must, then make sure you have a second bedroom.
Regarding RP Training: When you say "this is something I will not prompt for in the future" , does that mean that in the future I should request that roll if I want it, or that I add spoilers to explain myself, and then just choose to roll without asking? Also, should I always assume a D20 unless told otherwise?
Esther's deep abiding love affair with ale and wine is well-known in Edgington. She locks eyes with Raegar - the kind of connecting gaze shared with lovers. How sweet of him to recognize her thirst. However, with the help of Selena, Naldy, and sweet little Mateyu, Esther's weakness for intoxicants is lately balanced with a deep desire to enrich her family life. She has learned through trial and error a keen and awakened sense of responsibility. In the early days of their relationship, as Esther worked through the treachery of her past, and the trauma of her bear attack, there were times when the beer stein was her only friend. Although she appreciates Raegar's offer, Esther turns her back to the bar, and chooses to scan the crowd instead. She draws the line here, and never mixes business with pleasure. She expects that after this busy night, and after the place closes down, she can easily convince Azura to slide her a cold one.
After chatting with Azura, and hearing her relay Arnie's offer for compensation of 25 gold, plus tips, Esther feels a lovely mirthful chuckle in her belly that erupts to her mouth and eyes like sparkling bubbles of champagne. "Aaahh... dear Arnie... always working to get his money's worth." Esther would never fault the man for his wise negotiating skills, but Arnie and Esther both know the value of keeping his pub in tact. Nothing ruins a prosperous night's profits worse than broken stools and tables, or worse, broken bartenders.
"Azura, do you think you could remind Arnie that by my simply STANDING here, many of your guests won't even THINK of damaging your property. Perhaps he can be convinced that drunken patrons, with their dull sight, and festering emotions, when confronted with a six foot tall, two-hundred pound woman of dark color, respond with wide open eyes, gaping jaws, and retreating anger." Esther was enjoying this jovial discourse, knowing Azura's wisdom on such matters. Esther suspected that it was originally Azura's idea to offer the job in the first place, understanding their mutual admiration for strong women.
"Azura, I wonder if Arnie remembers the time I grasped a frenzied guest by the neck, and caused him to wet himself?" More chuckles erupting with the memory. "What do you think Arnie would say to a request for 50 gold, plus tips?"
Option 2: Role play and dice roll, because I like the writing skills part, and it's also fun to invite some fate into the situation.
Persuasion skill check (zero modifier, ugh!) = 15 Dang it - should I always hope for a 10? Is 10 the standard minimum to pass the test?
Insomnia, and a hot toddy at 1:00 am. I think this will increase my persuasion skills Mistress!! Glad you enjoyed the itty bitty reference :) BTW, do not choose a man that snores. If you must, then make sure you have a second bedroom.

Ugh no! I'm so sorry. Maybe time for a sleep medicine appointment? Your couch is very comfy, though. Not the same as a bed, I know.
Ok, these are very good questions. Thank you for bringing them up.
1) Yes, for now, if you want to use a skill to help shape the convo/activity, then please enquire.
2) Yes, d20 is the default, unless it says differently on your sheet in a particular ability, feature, spell, etc's description.
Great use of RP in the negotiation! That will always help move you closer to your goal. How far will be determined by the die. In this case, the die was fairly even, so that alone would've made the decision go against her (this side of 10).
However, the DC (difficulty) of action isn't always 10, that's just the average. I'll try to remember to include the amount to beat, but just know, the higher the stakes the higher the amount.
Azura joins in on your laughter and nods her head, "Yes, I think 50 plus tips, would be just fine. I had forgotten he soiled himself. Ha!"
"Now that we have an accord, would you mind making sure the kitchen has simmered down some," she says with a hint of exasperation, "Graeger can be a bit much when he's working."
She then turns at the sound of voices at the reception desk and heads off with a thank you squeeze of Esther's arm.
The tavern has a merry and crisp feel to it. The music has most people on their feet and relaxed.
"Thank you Azura, I'm happy you agree." Esther watches as Azura walk away, curious about the voices in the reception area.
An unusual instinct tempts Esther to follow. She feels compelled to keep an eye on the half-elf. Like a mamma bear and her territory, Esther paces toward the reception area, then back again, sniffing for trouble. Circling the room once more with her eyes, she walks toward the kitchen to find out whats happening with Graeger's situation.
A singer has arrived at the inn with her entourage, they immediately spot Azura and begin pressing her for info on artists that have already arrived. Her friend deftly weaves in and out of their chatter and even gives air kisses to the red-headed diva.
As Esther scans the room, there is nothing amiss, but it's still late afternoon and festivities are just winding up.
Map refresher.
When Esther walks to the door of the kitchen, Graeger waves her over without turning from the large cookfire. The wall-sized stone cooktop features cast-iron stoves to the left and to the right the open fire. A hanging stewpot can be seen there. Finally, just adjacent to the pot is the prep area filled with fresh fish from the market.
Along with Graeger, there are two others moving swiftly around. The mood in the kitchen is busy and brisk.
Graeger yells over to her while gesturing towards a large iron pot, "Can ye hold this for me, lass? We're down a body and could use some help."
"I'd love to help Graeger." Looking around the room, Esther considers that even though she would like to help, she's not sure that's what Azura had in mind when she asked Esther to make sure the kitchen had simmered down.
Nothing looks too awfully frenzied here, and since staying in the kitchen for any length of time would keep her removed from the main area, where she might be needed more, she turns to leave.
"I have to check on something first, and if I can, I'll come back to lend a hand."
Esther walks back toward the reception desk, and the bar, thinking to relay the news to Azura that Graeger needs another helper, and to find out whether she prefers that Esther work in the kitchen, or look out for things where the crowd is gathering.
When Esther walks back to the reception area, Azura is surrounded by more guests checking in. The entire area is filled with luggage, bodies, and musical instruments. Esther can just catch Arnie's feet slowly bringing bags up the stairs, followers more guests.
Azura's attention is currently focused on a dwarven woman. Passers-by stop to whisper excitedly, Esther catches the name Aurora Stonesworn. She is speaking to Azura loudly and slowly, as if worried the half-elf doesn't understand what she's saying.
Pls roll an intelligence check to see if she's heard of Aurora.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Approaching the reception area, Esther is immediately glad that she came back. The crowd is growing, and Azura seems a little overwhelmed. She hears people whispering the name Aurora Stonesworn.
Intelligence roll = 7 Woohoo! The unintelligent barbarian gets lucky this time :) I always sweat when you choose one of my weaknesses. Hehe.

Yay :D a new addiction!
That was amazing! Love that the bear is rising within her and you get to wax poetic about Fall. *swoon* ;] ;] Great first go!
Slight tweak, cuz I misled you a bit. I realized that I didn't explain myself quite enough about writing in first person.
Conversation = first person

If she doesn't, then no need for a dice roll.
Make sense?

Esther had intended to walk about the place for awhile, in order to size up the situation. "Are you Raegar?" Leaning across the bar, she slaps him on the shoulder. "I'm happy to help out this time," smiling good-naturedly, "but don't expect any fine waitress skills from these ham hocks." She raises both arms in a bicep-revealing stance.
Please reroll. You're trying to be a DC of 10.

"Haaah!" Grinning wide and bellowing with laughter, "Now you know my secret. Giant biceps... itty bitty balancing skills."
Esther dries off and tries again.
Roll for acrobatics: 11
Still giggling...itty bitty!

Insomnia, and a hot toddy at 1:00 am. I think this will increase my persuasion skills Mistress!! Glad you enjoyed the itty bitty reference :)
BTW, do not choose a man that snores.
