Maggie stops playing and uses her tail to hold her lute as she leans over the table to read the letter. She mutters some of the words: “Cannibals..Isle..pearl...sailors...” She sits back down and sips her mead before speaking. “Never heard of any of that. If those are the sailors, we might as well talk to ‘em.” She pushes her chair back and stands up. “Who wants to come with me?”
Gaerich takes a deep breath as if to speak but fixes Cyrus with a cold glare instead. After a moment a snarl forms on his face and growl in his throat. Before anyone can react he makes a comical yipping noise and throws back his head in a howl like that of a wolf pup. The howl quickly descends into laughter and after a moment he smiles at Cyrus convivially and winks.
You recognize those symbols as being a part of the Vereenigde Oost-Faerun Companie, a large trading company, with the seaport town of Murran being one of the flagship locations for the company and her employees. However, you don't understand how this Roy guy might be involved with them and you might even have the sense that Gaerich might have gotten confused between the sailors you all see and this fella in the letter having any relations.
Gimble, shocked by Gaerich's sudden outburst pushes her chair back from the table, and bounces up to standing on the chair taking a combative stance. Once Gaerich quiets, she looks around the room to see the patron's reactions.
Overhearing the table and catching Gaerich point at the portrait and then at the notes in Cryus's and Clavorous's hands seemed to have piqued Salty's interest as he lingers around the party with one ear cocked towards them.
The sailors playing dragon dice and the off duty dock workers turn to Gaerich as he howls and then watches as Gimble jumps on the chair in a combat stance. The sailors laugh at the antics of the human and gnome and then go back to playing their game while the dockworkers have an annoyed look on their face and aren't pleased with the noisy distractions.
Gaerich gives a good natured little half laugh after startling Gimble and favors her with a wink as well. He then returns the stares of the dock workers with a completely relaxed posture and a neutral look on his face, he turns to the sailors and raises his ale. He notices Salty’s interest in the conversation and says to his friends “looks like we’ve got someone’s attention.” When Maggie gets up Gaerich stands and nods, “Let’s see what they can tell us.”
You recognize the Misty Islands as a stretch of archipelagos a few miles away for Murran. You know some scholars who have gone there for research purposes on the fauna and creatures that live there. You know there are a few scattered small indigenous societies on some of these islands that sailors and pirates use to restock their ships and do a little trading. Most of these societies are made up of humans. As far as this Isle of Dread, this is the first time you are hearing about it.
((For Mark, how should Gareich and Maggie interact with these sailors? I’m debating between buying them a round of drinks or beating them in a game of some kind))
Gimble shakes her head as Gaerich winks at her. Jumping down, and seeing Gaerich and Maggie going off, Gimble approaches Salty as a child would toward a grandfather. In an almost pouty voice she says, "Hey Salty, I bet you have some great stories about your days at sea. Would you have some time to tell me some? Please?" ((If necessary, Gimble will attempt to use persuade.))
Salty looks down at Gimble, but ignores her question and tries to get a look at the notes Clavorus and Cyrus are looking at. He then looks down at Gimble and with a big smile asks, "tell me little one, what notes are your friends looking at?" he asks as he wipes his hands on the apron.
It looks like Clavorus has everything is order in front of him.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Maggie is still by the party’s table, but standing up. She places her lute back down to its original spot (leaning on the table) and picks up her glass of mead before moving toward the sailors. Once near the dragon dice game, she silently observes the game and the group to see if she can notice anything else about them up close. Perception 20
((Also, are any of the sailors just watching the game, not playing?))
To Salty, “Oh I don’t know, it’s about some guy named Rory Barba... Barba... Barba-something.” Then Gimble gets excited. “Wait! Do you have any stories with a Rory in them?“. Gimble pouts a little, “come on, with a nickname like Salty, I bet you have tons of good stories.”
Maggie makes her way over with her drink in hand and stands a few paces away from the table full of sailors. Upon closer inspection, she notices that they are all invested in the dragon dice game. Money changes hands as quickly as the dice are rolled. The game is a little too fast for Marie for her to totally understand how the game is played. It's only because of one of the sailors, a handsome goateed human with a scar under his left eye has the most silver pieces in front of him, which helps Maggie know who is winning.
Upon hearing Gimble say Rory Barb Salty's eyes widen and he finishes her sentence for her by saying, "Rory Barbarosa," in a revered tone. Salty's eyes start to water up and before his legs give he finds himself a barstool to sit on. "I... I haven't heard that name in thirty years. Aye, little one, I have many stories about Rory. He was one of the finest captains a deckhand could work for. As fair as one could be. Rory... The last time I saw him we was right here. This is before I ended up buying this dump from Old Man Barnes, mind you. Rory kept telling me about this island he found and he was looking to gather a crew to set sail for it and he wanted me to be his first mate. Old Salty here passed on the offer. Me pirating days were over by then I was ready to settle these sealegs." Salty looks pass Gimble, his lower lip trembling slightly, "I regret not going on that ship and being with me friend when he needed me the most." Salty wiped his face his hairy arm and then gets up from the barstool. He gives his head a little shake and then looks at Gimble before some thought gives him a twinkle in his eye. "Aye, I think I have something you might want, little friend." Salty then goes into the back of the bar towards his office and Gimble can hear the sounds of Salty scrummaging around until he finally comes back holding a single piece of vellum paper. "I think Rory would have wanted to give this to whoever found his missing notes." Salty then hands over the vellum to Gimble who looks down and sees this:
"He gave me a copy before he left. Said if I ever changed my mind I should come find him."
As Salty begins to speak about Rory, Gimble takes a seat across from Salty and sits in rapt attention. As Salty leaves, Gimble's gaze follows him as she is on the edge of her seat. Upon being offered the map, she takes the vellum reverently. Looking up from the map with a hopeful look on her face, "So, do you really think he's gone, are you changing your mind now? Should we try to find him together?"
