Kellen curses at the sight of the giant wave, muttering something about bad luck, and quickly tries to determine if this is a natural wave or some sort of magic:

Instinct kicks in. Kei has been in this position before, albeit not quite as grand of scale. Boats rarely survived intact. "Forget the ship, it'll be smashed to pieces!" He shouts above the roar of rushing water. He waits a moment, looking at his companions to see what they do, before checking his gear and launching over the side towards the wave. He dives below the surface and into the body of the wave like a surfer duck diving through the break. He swims deep down, hoping the energy of the wave will wash over him harmlessly.
Kei dives deep into the black waters in the trough of the gargantuan wave. (Kei: make a D14 WIS Save with Advantage.)
Gerrard and Kellen get a pit in their stomach as they feel the ship fall, then rise suddenly. Against the roar of water and the cracking and snapping of timbers, the ship becomes completely vertical; everything loose in the cabin – bowls of soup, bedding, loose coins, equipment – crashes against the back bulkhead as you cling on to whatever fixtures are within your reach.
(Somebody roll five unmodified d20s for me to see how well the crew manages the ship.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
There is massive, crushing impact as the ship is enveloped in darkness and water. Timbers splinter, seawater sprays. Everything is violently thrown in an instant.
Kellen and Gerrard are slammed: Make a DC18 STR Save or be torn from your spot and dashed against the bulkhead for62 bludgeoning damage (Gerrard) and 52 bludgeoning damage (Kellen), or half on a success, from the flying debris.
If either of you fail your save, also roll a DC18 Acrobatics of Athletics check to remain with the wreck, or be thrown free of the ship altogether. (You may also choose to do the latter.)
Kei: Make a DC18 DEX Save or take 34 bludgeoning damage from the sheer force of the water. (No damage on a success and you remain oriented.)
Kellen slams into the bulkhead hard, unable to catch himself. As the boat pitches again, he goes with it and uses the leverage to launch himself clear of the ship and into the roiling water, clutching his cap to his head and diving deep.

Gerrard and Kellen are battered like ragdolls through the cabin, tumbling in the dark as the immense force of the ocean nearly crushes them, before being thrown free of the ship altogether into a maelstrom of black, turbulent water.
Gerrard is badly injured, but he finds himself comforted by the deep water, and discovers that he can still breathe underwater (in fact, he quite prefers it.)
Kellen dives.
None of you can see one another. A second, much smaller wave follows the first (no rolls needed.)
Then there is relative calm again, although the water is too cloudy to see far. You are separated, underwater. The sea floor is also not visible here.
Injured and uncertain of what just happened, Kellen takes a second to orient himself. His trusty mandolin, somehow still strapped to his back, glows as he mutters gentle words and gingerly touches his bruises. He looks around for the surface, and for any sign of his companions.

Gerrard and Kellen surface, having seeing nothing but cloudy, disturbed water below. They see each other, about 75 feet apart.
The surface is surprisingly calm. It's a beautiful, sunny day – a bit too sunny for Gerrard. The ship is visible, on its side or listing heavily, maybe a quarter of a mile northwest.
A distant dark line and a low bank of distant mist is all that marks the retreating wave.
There are no other visible signs of other survivors, nor anything else, although its hard to see far from your vantage point on the surface.

The giant wave approaches. You watch as some fishing boat – not much more than a dot on the horizon – blinks out as the wave rolls north.
There's nothing about it that seems arcane, although Kellen wonders if its origin could be.
A deep, powerful roar builds. You have only seconds left before the wave will be upon you.
Capt. Edrik shouts commands to his crew. They point the bow perpendicular to the wave, slacken the lines, and brace for impact.
Gerrard:

"Everyone belowdecks!" commands Capt. Edrik. "Lash in! I have the tiller!"
The massive, black wall of water – a mountainous, roaring wedge of vertical ocean – blots out the sun. Impact is imminent.

Already in his corner of the cabin, Gerrard holds on as tight as he can, hoping the captain knows his business well enough to keep them alive.
