Everyone enjoys the accommodation provided; all furnishings and services are an impressive standard. As each person comes from a wonderful night's rest, you busy yourselves with morning routines, breakfasts and packing to find the weather bright and promising, the inn in the thick of its mundane schedules and Gundrenno where to be seen...
Flutter wakes from his rest yawning and heads out of the room, grabbing some food along the way. As he makes his way down to the main level of the tavern, he feels a sense of pride, as if he is not on the same level of the common folk around him, but maybe even above them. A private room above the rest was definitely a step up from his usual wretched living situation, not that he mind.
Unsure of where to meet Gundren, Flutter pushes open the door of the tavern and makes his way to the stable, vaguely remembering hearing a few mention setting up there last night. The Dwarven companion he met last night seems to have just arrived as well.
” -And a hearty hello to you, laddie!”
He mimics from a past encounter with a Dwarf, raising his hand to wave hello.
Rising well before the sun did the same, Aldreric made a habit of waking early. His chosen lifestyle and profession often required his consciousness well before that of others, as each and every day required much preparation. He went through the same morning ritual, the same motions, even when there was a call for change; still he could act without thought, and at times even did so, just looking at himself in the mirror, as if watching someone else preparing themself. One must be able to present himself, or herself even, to whomever he shall meet, as whomever he is, on that particular day.
The hall in which the part met, the night before, was still dark. A lantern or two about the walls were still lit and slightly illuminated a few meters around them. Perhaps left over from the previous night, though always possible that he wasn’t the only one walking about already this morning. Aldreric walked across to the bar, and leaned over it, looking for any signs that the half-orc bartender was about. "How does one expect to run a reputable inn, without a barkeep on call at all hours?" If one were to be observing him, it'd be unclear whether Aldreric was speaking to anyone in particular, or speaking aloud. "Well, since Gundren's already covered our costs."
Aldreric walked around the bar and mixed himself a drink, something to pick up the spirits and clear the head for a long journey that day. He leaned against the bartop as he drank. "I assume then that it may be beyond reason to assume they have help to retrieve my bags then." Finishing off the remnants of his glass, he placed it back on the bar. "And I can't forget the tip, for the 'exceptional' service." Removing a single coin from his purse, he then passes it to his other hand, and pockets it. "Well, thank you sir, it was my pleasure to serve you."
Laughing at his own joke, Aldreric retrieved his belongings from his room and made his way to the stables, intent on meeting Gundren and the party, for the day's ride.
With the team all up and gathered, you find yourselves waiting for Gundren for a few minutes, and then a few more... The half-orc butler suddenly steps out from the tavern to meet you all by the stables and hands you a letter. It reads:
Merry morning to you friends, Sincere apologies but something urgent requires my attention on Phandelin right away! My friend, Sildar Hallwinter, and I have gone on ahead and taken a few things with. It'll be great if you meet us in Phandelin in a tenday, so we can arrange our next move. Again, really sorry about the rude departure friends. But it was really urgent!!
Look forward to seeing you! Gundren Rockseeker
With grumbles all around, but a reason for you all not to wait around anymore, you all take to the road.
The day is pleasant, rich with birdsong, wildflower scents and sunshine. Smooth road, smooth day. Or so it seemed...
"Lovely! Here's another one, dogs! Let's get 'em!" Brave cut-throats, keen for steal - from hand or corpse.
"So are we to travel with the supplies as planned then---" Aldreric rose his gaze from the note, just to see the half-orc disappear back inside. "I guess it may also be too much to ask for one for the road then?" He called out to him, though not expecting a response, or for him to even have heard him at all. He looked at the rest of the party before climbing into the wagon, and managing as comfortable a spot as possible. "Well then, perhaps we should get underway. I did not invest time and money into this opportunity for it to fail before it began."
The rocking motion of the wagon on the uneven road was nothing short of soothing to Aldreric, as he had slept through much worse. What did wake him though was the voice that caused the abrupt stop. Tipping up the brim of his hat, which he had lowered to shade his eyes, Aldreric saw the bandits in their way. He addressed the rest of the party as they all climbed down from the vehicle. "Well, time for you three to earn your keep. This is what Grunden is paying you for."
Rou sewing the group steps off the wagon using Thaumaturgy to cause the ground to shake and Tremor. “Move out of our way. I am only telling you once. You will be killed if you do not heed my words human.”
Flutter throws his pack inside the wagon and takes a seat on the side. The trip is nice and pleasant with clear skies, a gentle breeze and the gentle rocking of the wagon. He almost nods off to sleep before he hears the all too familiar sound of blades rasping from their sheaths. Poking up from his position, Flutter remembers his first encounter with Gundren on the road and the grim scene of bloodshed and violence that ensued afterwards. Not wanting anything fowl to fall upon his new friends, he reaches into his pack.
He hastily grabs his wand, and with a flick of his wrists, concentrates on casting the spell Faerie Fire on all four targets (Dex save : 13)
The four bandits wait a moment of eerie silence before azure, sparkling flames erupt at their feet. Two (Bandit 1 & 3) of them managed to leap up and dodge the licks of mystical flame. The others (Bandits 2 & 4) have their clothes wreathe in the dancing flame. They panic and begin pat the flame, which extinguish regardless. However, their form is left gently glowing with mystical blue-green colour, standing out even against the trees and grass...
Bandit 3dashes forward to attack Kharnylwith his scimitar! Attack: 8Damage: 2
Bandit 4 aims his crossbow and also goes for the dwarf... Attack: 5Damage: 3
Bandit 1 aims his crossbow at the kenku! Attack: 16Damage: 9
Bandit 2aims his crossbow past the hulking deviil and at Aldreric! Attack: 6Damage: 6
After the flurry of attacks, only the one hits... And it truly hits his mark as Flutteris unconscious.
Cringing with pain from the arrow and the blade, Kharnyl raises his hammer overhead and proclaims: "By the strength of Moradin, taste my searing smite!"
Aldreric, having witnessed the bandit’s attempt to shoot him with a crossbow, and the potential untimely death of Gundren’s bird, stepped forward; closer to the ‘bad guys’ but also further into cover behind the hulking mass of Rou.
”Gentlemen, surely we don’t need to further any bloodshed. You’ve impales one of us with a bolt, we’ve lit some of you on fire.”
Poking his head out from behind his nearly acquired meat-shield, Aldreric continued, now with a full view of the four individuals.
”My companions and I much like you, are simply trying to profit however we can while on this road. I’m sure we can find some common ground, and come to an understanding that doesn’t end with all of us dead.”
”Why don’t you lower your weapons, and come sit down. As long as you’re not a ‘perceived’ threat, our demon has no reason to destroy you. So come, let’s talk.”
Almost instantly after his spell is cast, a click is heard from the leader as a bolt is fired forth from his crossbow. The bolt whizzes across the road and deftly strikes Flutter square in the shoulder, sending him spinning down to the ground. From his new position on the ground, he can see his friends press the attack and hopes that they will prove to be more successful than him. Flutter grabs the bolt and tries to stop the damage from becoming too severe.
