Chapter 1
The five heroes have been called into the Guildmaster’s office on the third floor of the Adventurers Guild in the city of Herona. The office appears very antique, with several old items scattered around the room. All of the truly important artifacts acquired by the guild are hidden away in a vault by the Guildmaster. There is a window with a view that overlooks most of the shorter buildings of Herona. There is a rectangular table in the middle of the room, with a chair on one side, in which the Guildmaster is sitting in, while there are five chairs on the other side, only one of which is occupied by a woman.
When the heroes enter the room, the Guildmaster stands up. He has a visibly short stature due to his Halfling heritage. He is quite old, with a head of mostly white hair. He is wearing robes that reflect his status as the Guildmaster and as a powerful wizard. The woman also stands up. She is a beautiful young woman with short blonde hair and fair skin. She appears to be human, and she wears a cloak, which hides most of her clothes and gear. The only other things visible are her smooth hands and muddy boots. When the heroes step into the room, the Guildmaster taps his staff on the ground 3 times in excitement. He speaks rapidly, as if in a constant race against time. “Oh great! You are all here! And at the same time! Wonderful! As you may know from your letters, a young woman—this very one, in fact—has asked for some of the guild’s most successful members to assist and protect her in her travel to her home. She has offered a HEFTY sum that will finance our operations even more in exchange! Oh and before I forget!” He runs over to one of the nearby shelves, grabs a rolled up parchment, and unrolls it on the table. Looking at the woman, “Here is a map for her merry band. You may borrow this for your journey! Now take a minute to introduce yourselves to her, my representatives, and make me proud. With that said, I must be off to my next meeting.” He Misty Steps outside to catch his horse ride.
The woman pulls down the hood of her cloak and reveals a hairband perched on the top of her blonde head. She extends her hand peacefully and speaks with an accent ((think British)). “I am Lady Malyra Brooke of a castle called Escheron. My treacherous uncle stole my title when he killed my father about 2 decades ago, and I wish to take it back. I have heard that this Adventurers Guild is quite popular with the people of the land, so I was quite pleased to hear from your kind Master High-Hill that he could spare some warriors to assist. I hope that you all will help me; I believe my god led me here for this very reason. Unfortunately, Mister High-Hill got a bit too excited to tell me your names when I mentioned my offer. Will you all please enlighten me?”
A young halfling skips forward, bows twice, and shakes the woman’s hand excitedly. She’s short, even for a halfling, has brown hair, and a blue hooded cloak.
“Hi Miss Lady Brooke! My name’s Cora Brightmoon! Nice to meet you! I’m a wizard too and I wanna be like Mister High-Hill! All my friends here are the best and strongest ever so we’ll get you to the castle super-fast; right guys?”
A young elven woman steps forwards and smiles towards Cora. She has dark brown hair that has been tied into a loose braid and wears leather armor with a long bow slung over her shoulder as well as a full quiver of arrows.
"Indeed we will! It's an honor to meet you, my lady. My name is Eira Nygaard and I am at your service. We will do our very best to assist you in whatever ways we can!"
A tall and lean tiefling with dark red skin, obsidian black hair that grows between a pair of spiraling, white horns and large silvery eyes gives Lady Brooke a brief nod. He is wearing dark clothes under a leather armor and keeps himself a bit separate from the others leaning at the wall of the room having a good view on the door and the window without being immediately visible from the outside.
A tall, and solidly-built, man walks in, with a greatsword sheathed over his shoulder. A brace of javelins rests over the other shoulder, both within easy reach. he has a handsome face and steel-gray eyes, with raven-black hair. The uniform of a City Guard fits him well, and is freshly pressed and washed. Though the chain mail he wears over it makes that fact a little hard to tell.
"Well met." The man says nodding to the woman after the old halfling leaves. "My name is Ethan Weldon." He glances to the others as they assemble and give their greetings and names. "It seems we have an interesting group here to aid you my lady." He tells their patron with a slight smile.
Through all the introductions a Half-Elf man of somewhat short stature stood by the side. His dark grey eyes took in the woman as they all spoke. When it was his turn he brushed back a bit of his white long white hair from his face and gave a slight bow.
"And I am Zadoris Shadeleaf. If you may, you can call me Shade. If the master has deemed your cause worthy then you shall have my in this endeavor." As he says this he taps the long sword at his side for emphasis.
“I was discussing with Mister High-Hill the route we could take, and he recommended starting with the port town of Cython. Sailing from there to this village on the edge of the Orclands,” she points to Amesto, “would be easy. I’m not very familiar with the geography and locations here, you may know better. Any suggestions?”
((You all know the Orclands to be a desert region mostly dominated by orc raiders. It is very dangerous, but Amesto is right next to the sea, so the orcs don’t bother the town much. Almost all of the tribes are settled south of Amesto, not visible on this region’s map.))
CTeaveling by boat would be quicker than traveling by land and I recall the Orclands are a savage place. At least inland they are, " Shade says. He then stops and asks the Lady. "Before we go to much further, does your Uncle suspect any plot against him. More specifically you and your timeline? Should we be extra wary of hired cutthroats?"
Malyra replies, “I do not think so. I don’t believe he even knows I am still alive. I was sent away in secret, taken in by some elven family friends.” She points to the center of the Senda Mountains. “This is how we get back to the castle my uncle usurped.”
"Seems like as good of a plan as I could come up with." Ethan says as he looks over the map. "This land is going to be dangerous, but the orcs tend to leave the town alone,, as it is close to the shore." He touches the desert region, then the town that is their destination by boat. "He then traces a line from the town to the mountains. "going to be a rough trip I fear." He announces to the woman. "Would it be safer for you to remain here while we take care of this business, then let you know when you can come to reclaim the castle?" He looks truly concerned for her safety.
For a moment, her lady-like behavior drops. Grimly, she says, “No. I want to see his face when he realizes I survived.” Her tone quickly reverts to what it previously was. “Besides, I doubt you could find it without me.”
Cora jumps a few times to see the map on the high table before pushing a chair up for herself and standing on her tiptoes. Her head peeks over the table as she takes in the map.
”We should go now! I can’t waiiiiiit! A few orcs aren’t going to stop us; we’re all amaaaazing!”
She hops up and down on the chair excitedly, clearly hyped for the adventure.
"Well, they can try to stop us but yes, Cora, we got this," he says while giving a wink. Turning to the group he says, "then let's make preparations. Food, drink, travel gear."
"Seeing as the orc raiders don't often attack near the coast, staying close to it for as long as possible might be a good idea to lower the chances of coming across any raiders." Eira turns to Shade as he asks about preparations. "I may need to pick up a few more arrows but other than that, I should be good to go. Anyone else?"
Zargaroth steps closer to the table gives the map a glance and then looks at Lady Brooke.
"I might need a few things, but first, let us hear more about this job. I don't want to run blindly into some kind of a mess. What do you expect of us? Are we supposed to just escort you, are we supposed to assault the castle. We should not be talking about how we can get there before we talked about what you want and if and how that is achievable. With all due respect for Master High-Hill and for you Lady Brooke, I won't sign up for a job that is doomed to fail."
"Going to a castle where the current occupants are expected to not wish to give it up, I'd say we are to find a way to get rid of those inside of it." Ethan speaks up in the lady's defense. "Not like they are going to simply see the lady here and be willing to hand the place over." He gives a friendly smile to her and then shrugs. "Not sure what else you are wanting her to explain after that. We are to keep her safe during the trip to the castle, and find a way to win the castle back from her uncle. Seems fairly self-explanatory to me..."
Well, I was hoping there was more of a plan than <Go to a castle and then murder everyone inside>. Even if this is what we are up to, I’d rather know now. I just wanted to know what I was signing up for, that’s all.
Zargaroth keeps looking expectantly at Lady Brooke.
"I don't necessarily think we need to murder those inside." Ethan said with a shrug. "I think we may find some other options when we get there. As far as plans go, I don't know what the lady has in mind, but I would say to hold off on making to many plans until we see what the lay of the land is. Only then will plans make much of a difference anyway." He pauses then sighs. "I am not against taking the place by force, but let's see what other options come available once we know more."
