Kayn scoffs when he mentions his god. He learned through his time under Lillith's tutelage that the goblin gods were farce. The books he read, the lessons he were taught, they all falsified these gods. His magic would have been seen as a manifestation of some god's power. Idiot goblin. These were his powers, not some fake god's. He had the urge to tell him that, but it quickly left. Past experiences show that the goblins can't be convinced otherwise. Too stupid.
"Put leash on him if you want to keep him. He will try to kill you in your sleep to steal your pretty focus." He nods to the focus that he's seen her use. They're valuable, and that's all the goblin will care about after he finds a path to freedom.
Kayn looks over to the Barbarian, "Can you break this?" He knocks on the stone wall.
"It's not a big deal, honestly it's fine," Vesra signed nonchalantly. She knew her sister was far too stubborn to let her off easily, so the druid was forced to soldier on. "We'll talk more about it later, but either I'm going crazy or the pebble I tripped over talked to me."
The Kor ignored Kayn, mostly, and smiled at the goblin. "It's a pleasure to meet you Gerbur. My name is Vesra," she said. "When we get out of here, we're going to let you go and be free."
Vesra stood up, content that her work was done. Besides, there was one part of Kayn's little speech that had caught her attention. "Don't start punching the wall just yet," she said softly. "I have something I want to try."
The druid walked up to the wall, placing her palms flat on it before beginning to murmur to it. "Hey friend," she whispered. "I know we talked a little earlier, and you seemed to think me kind. I really don't want to hurt you, or to let my friends hurt you. But we really need to get through. Would you mind making a way for us? Please?"
She stood with her cheek against the wall for several moments, waiting for something to happen. But the earthen wall remained unmoved. "Maybe I am going crazy," she signed to herself with a sigh.
"Okay..." Kayn says, "Maybe we not break stone. Find another way out." He's looking at Vesra with a sideways glance. She talks to stone. That's not normal. Druids don't do that... His gaze turns towards Vasha. Who is protecting who?
"There is still south," he says, gesturing in the direction. "We may have to swim."
"Free?!" Gerbur squealed in excitement. "Master thinks me dead, me thinks, so if I go free and go away I be free!!!" he screams joyfully.
"There is still south," the boss goblin said. So powerful. Me wishes to be booyahg. "We may have to swim." Swim?
"Uhhh..." Gerbur laughs nervously. "Swim? Me know no how to swim. Me always drown when swim. No know why master vampire lady like me working down here. Sometimes, tunnels fill aaaaallll the way with water, and I get scared and go up ladder over there" He points to the wall before turning. "Ohhh... That's problem. Maybe we break wall instead."
Ellangil was tired of the messing around. First Vesra apologized to a rock and nothing happened, then she caressed the wall and nothing happened. He was starting to think she was a little mental. Poor Vasha. All this time he thought Vesra was protecting Vasha, but now he was realizing Vasha was always mad because she was the one protecting Vesra. That couldn't be easy to deal with. All of the sudden her giving flowers as peace offerings didn't seem all that crazy.
Play time was over, and the boo-what-ever goblin had a good idea. Ellangil picked up the biggest stone he could see and grasped it with both and like a two handed club. With all of his strength he leaned forward and propelled the make shift weapon right into the wall. The problem was that the stone slipped out of the grasp of his right hand, and the stone pinged off of the wall playfully. Angry and cursing under his breath, he picked up the stone for a second swing. Then the goblin informed them company was coming. Great! now what should he do? Smack the wall again or drop the stone and fight the oncoming traffic?
Ellangil could hear the commotion as the group prepared for battle. This only angered the barbarian assuming the stupid wall should have cracked in half already. With a huge heave, he took a second smash at the wall. Demmit! It was because of the magic the stupid blood sucker used to make the wall in the first place. It was the only logic excuse as to why the wall wasn't crumbling down before his feet. Now he was down right pissed off! He dropped the rock and picked up the torch moving to the front lines of battle. Seeing how everyone was situated, he speaks, "Vesra, you and Vasha switch spots, and we'll form a front line." Then he dropped the torch nearby and, with the simplicity of one so skilled as he was, the hulking mass of muscle withdrew both weapons once again and prepared for the onslaught. He'd rage just before the first null was upon him.
OOC: First round: Crack the wall 17 To Hit and 8 Damage, drop rock, Bonus Action: grab torch. Second Round- move up next to Vesra, speak aloud to have her and Vasha switch places, drop the torch, withdraw weapons, bonus action rage.
Vasha heard it at the same time as Kayn. She turned around, grabbing her hooks, and preparing herself. "They are coming," she said, closing her eyes, concentrating. Quietly, she mumbled aloud. "90 feet away." Another pause. "12 seconds. Prepare yourselves! At least four incoming!" She looked out into the darkness. "We need light up here."
Kayn obliges, pulling another torch from his pack and, with a touch, setting it aflame. This should be easy. This team is strong. He glances again at Vesra.
With the remaining time available, Kayn utters arcane words and summons forth the the power of fire. At the junction ahead, a dark flame rises from the earth, feeding off of his arcane energy. "Do not step on that flame. It will hurt," he says, seeing the first of the enemies arriving ahead.
Vasha still had her eyes close, listening to the movements of the null. Closer, closer. Wait. What was that? Vasha cocked her head, trying to pinpoint. There it was, they were splitting up. Her eyes snapped open, and noticed Ellangil. "Stay," she said to him, and she ran over to Veythe. "They have divided. 6 seconds." She pulled out a torch, lit it, and dropped it on the ground just in front of her.
Great! The nulls had split up. Vasha was already going to the other tunnel to the west where the bard was standing. Looked like he was handling this one. He assumed the part members in the back would split up with their ranged abilities. Might have been better for a small retreat back to where Kayn was standing. Vasha and Ellangil could have formed a wall at that point and handled the null horde together. Parties splitting up was always a bad idea. The problem was they had no time to debate strategy. The nulls were already near them. This didn't matter in that his attack strategy was not changing ... rage ... swing ... kill!!
"Not a lot of time," Veythe mumbled to Vasha, but she snapped up her pan flute anyway and twitched her fingers along the pipes for a second. She tried to think of something to do that would make her the least bit more useful given that she didn't want to lose her own head to stupidly rushing into a mess she couldn't get herself out of. It took a second to cross her mind--brash, impulsive, impatient, protective--and she trilled out a quick beat through the pan flute. This time it was less like the beating pulse of a heart and more a soft whisper. Veythe kept the sounds a bit lighter, but no less harsh. As soon as the music dies off she reaches down for her dagger and pull it up with her free hand.
'I'm sorry my friend hit you,' Vesra apologized to the stone, although this time in her head instead of out loud. There was no need for the others to think her totally mad. 'You must not think me so kind any more. I'll try to make it up to you-'
Her thoughts were interrupted by her sister's announcement of incoming troops. Vasha's sense of hearing was incomparable, and she could tell them exactly how many were coming. The druid summoned a ball of flame in each hand, preparing herself for the incoming onslaught.
Perhaps she could prove her worth to the others now, in the heat of battle.
Ato watches, even more confused as Vesra approaches the wall and begins talking to it. He understood that the kor had a certain affinity with stone and had heard stories of their lithomancy, and had seen the woman produce some minor magic, but he didn't think this was right. Definitely god-touched, poor thing. He'd have to be more cautious of his words around her so as not to trouble her further in her addled state. But, she wished to be an adventurer?
Stepping back as the big barbarian attempted a more direct solution, he puzzled over their situation, trying to think of any other options, beyond simply searching for another route. This line of thought was cut short by the warning of more nulls coming their way. Not wishing to be trapped in the closed off tunnel spur, Ato shifted west, nearer to the bard and crazy kor.
As the group reorganized for the fight, he pulls a javelin from his back, something he can use from range behind the barbarian, and when the goblin (had it given a name yet, he tries to recall) produces the bonfire he nods. Smart. "Ah, very nice, little one." He pats her condecendingly on the chitinous head. "Good girl." Then he waits for the null to arrive.
As the group begins to prepare themselves, all of them soon hear the pattering of footsteps on stone, accompanied by grunts and howls as the nulls close in on their prey. Peering out into the darkness, the first hint of the wave of nulls is the light reflecting off of the chitinous protrusions from their bodies. Within seconds they're on the group, coming from both the southwest tunnel and converging on the south tunnel from both directions. They shriek before leaping at their targets, Vasha and Ellangil.
Kayn's bonfire proved to be resourceful, with Ellangil positioned in such a way that the nulls couldn't get past him to those behind, forcing them to remain on the bonfire in order to engage him. Slashing at Ellangil, he evades one of the attacks but takes a gash across the gut from the other zombie able to reach him [5 slashing damage]. The third one screams, perhaps frustrated at the lack of space available to reach its prey.
Two more nulls converge down the southwest tunnel, illuminated by the torch Vasha placed near her location. They both swing at Vasha, attempting to disembowel her, but only one claw grazes her along the side [2 slashing damage].
Veythe winced and quickly pulled her pan flute up to her lips. She shifted the fingers of her one hand along the pipes as she blew, a quick little trill while she focused the magic. Her free hand came up to grab Vasha's shoulder. Normally she'd draw them along the wound in question, but the tight quarters gave her little option. She hoped this worked as well as it did on Ato earlier, if only so that she could keep these interesting group of potentials alive to help her give Vielara a piece of her mind.
Ato heaves a javelin past Ellangil, but it was a questionable throw. He may have grazed one of the null, but if so, it barely did enough damage to matter (Sneak attack 12, damage 2). Cosi, he thought, now is not the time for chaos to interfere.
He pulls another from over his shoulder and takes more careful aim, trying once again. Only three, he thinks, then I'm all but useless trapped back here. When the next null moves in to attack the raging barbarian, Ato uses its distraction and heaves his second javelin at it (Sneak attach 10, damage 5).
Vasha took the full brunt of the nulls anger, right across the chest once again. She sucked air in harshly, regretting not letting her sister heal her wound. Just then, she felt a hand on her shoulder. It was different than her sister's. Glancing down, she saw pink flesh. The female human. After this, she'd not only need to get her name, but give her a real special thanks.
Steadying herself, she sliced across the null's face with her right hook, while throwing a left handed jab into it's abdomen. She tried to push the thing over, but it stayed firmly in place. Damn these things were resilient.
(first attack 23 to hit for 5 damage, bonus attack 18 to hit for 2 damage, athletics check - 7 vs 10)
The chaos of battle was immediate. The nulls began swarming the tunnels so quickly that Kayn had little chance to go through his spells properly. The heat of battle like this was new to him. Sleep? No, null don't sleep. Bonfire! No, can only keep one. Fire bolt! His aim would have to be precise for it to work. Kayn moves forward slightly and squeezes between a wall and the merman, all the while gesturing with his free hand. He focuses this frustration into his spell, powering it from a well of mana deep within. A bolt of fire flies from his hand and impacts the null screaming for it's turn at slaying the barbarian. The impact barely winged it, and the null didn't seem to notice.
Too distracted. Must focus.
(Moves to E3, Fire Bolt on the null at E6, 1 fire damage + 1 radiant damage)
Ellangil stepped forward to hold the corridor as Vasha had to depart for the other wave of nulls. The barbarian positioned himself perfectly to use the bonfire to his advantage. Any null that attacked would have to stand in the flames while he hacked at them. All emotion left his mind save for the rage that enveloped him deep in his soul. His barbaric roar being heard by the party as the first Null came through the fire, not even phased by the damage the flame produced, to attack him.
The first claw of the undead beast missed but the second slashed across his stomach. He knew enough to know it would hurt once he was out of rage, but he pushed through resisting the physical aspect of the attack (2 dmg). Less than a second later, a javelin goes flying past his head from behind him, slashing the null as it passes by the undead. Ellangil doesn’t think about it as he comes from the left side at an angle, top to bottom, slashing the null (To Hit 12 | Damage 6) before coming from the other direction with his hand axe sinking the head into the upper check of the monster (To Hit 12 | Damage 10) killing it.
Ellangil isn’t done there, as he prepares his weapons for the next null dumb enough to come through the flames towards him.
Vesra was seeing red when the null came through the corridor. She was like Ellangil in that regard: full of raw emotion. These vampire spawn had the audacity to come after her sister? She could tell Vasha wasn't in the greatest shape, but Veythe managed to heal her before she could get a chance.
That was just fine by the druid, though. Now she could make the mindless thrall pay. Vesra flung one of the flaming balls directly at the null closest to her twin, charring his shoulder.
Kayn scoffs when he mentions his god. He learned through his time under Lillith's tutelage that the goblin gods were farce.
