As you travel, the fields of Breland are oddly quiet. Usually one hears of brigand or dinosaur attacks along the roads in Breland. As you travel, you notice that the land has become quite hilly in the past few hours. Klobs announced that you would all soon be at Ardev.
Sundown is approaching when you top a rise and see the town of Ardev just a few short miles away. But instead of the pleasant, welcoming town you expected, you see columns of black smoke rising from burning buildings, running figures that are little more than dots at this distance, and a dark, winged shape wheeling low over the keep that rises above the center of the town. Ardev is being attacked by a dragon!

(All of the religions tend to deny each other, particularly those with gods. Many of them consider gods of other religions to be misinterpretations of their own gods. So, for example, a member of the Church of the Silver Flame will believe someone who follows the Sovereign Host to be someone who is worshiping false gods. Of course, just like in real life, you may judge people on the content of their character as opposed to their belief system or you could see them as someone to be converted.
An extra tidbit about this setting: Deities do not walk the mortal planes nor any planes you can reach. Instead, it is up to each person's belief what they truly believe. There are forms of heresy, and depending on where you are, you must watch what you say. Particularly in Thrane or Karrnath.
I will be following this post up with a DM post moving the story along. Hang tight!)

Sometimes people from other religions get along super well, even if they think the other is worshipping the wrong god. Sometimes it doesn't work out. Your worship of things doesn't affect actual gameplay, however. A cleric with no god still heals. They just need to follow an ideal they hold to the fullest.)

Klobs nods without hesitation and follows Dahme'dre's instruction, not wanting his goods to be burned by the dragon.
It seems to Dahme'dre that the best route to Ardev is the way in which they have been traveling. If in a mile or so they split from the main road, it is possible to sneak in between a few of the more residential seeming buildings. While the dragon is overhead is attacking, its attention seemed directed at some focal point within the town.

"Let's get in there and help where we can! Time to tend your flock ladies!"
"I'm not a Lady, but a Paladin of the Silver Flame!" Ashehee shouts as she secured her shield.
The sight of the dragon shook her for a moment, but the smoke shook her more. She knew that not long ago, she'd look at the destruction as an opportunity to loot. The memories of her prior misdeeds filled her conscience like the dying might think of significant events in their lives before dying. People were dying in the town, she had no doubt about that. She quickly composed herself and surveyed her surroundings out of habit, despite the fact she was a ways away from death that flies from above.
"What's the plan?" Ashehee barked, not wanting to take the lead of companions who might not know how to follow...

Once the wagons are under the cover of a nearby tree Dahme'dre looks to Klobs.
"These are fine animals. You won't want them tied up and drawing attention to the wagons if that Whelp comes this way." (persuasion8 She's not stealing his horses she's protecting them.)
Dahme'dre works to un-harness the beasts quickly, without waiting for Klobs' consent or approval. She leaps onto the lead mare's bare back then turns her eye to Zomith.
"This beast can bear us both. Do you care to join us in this dance?"
She turns the mount to face the rising columns of smoke.
"We'll make haste to the edge of the city! We'll be much safer with the buildings for cover than we will be out here in these fields!"
Her commanding exterior did not betray her inner doubts. Should I be directing them away from this danger? Would sheltering them prevent our doom?...

Ashehee gathers herself as her companions decide what to do. "This is not my time to die," she says to herself, while at the same time portraying a sense of confidence, albeit feigned.
The elf Slade seems sure of himself, so Ashehee rushes to his side, warhammer at her side and eyes darting about. "Show us the way elf," she says, ready to proceed.
(OOC: might be a one post day for me as I'm traveling, but good chance I can look at thread in a few hours. Ashehee is going to follow Slade in light of his city secrets and perception roll).
(I am bringing work home with me today, it seems. I shake my fist at it! In any case, I will make this post here to resolve unresolved checks, and I will try to post again later when you reach the outside of the city. I hate to be a bit spoilery, but your characters will make it very close as it seems whatever is going on inside of the town is mostly contained therein. Use this time to develop your interactions and explore how your characters handle the stress of a big, ol' dragon circling overhead.)
Everyone, you can tell the town itself is not walled-in in any way. You are approaching this town from the east, and you see: a few roads leading into the town, but the center is wider and better paved. It seems to be the main point of entry for those with wagons. To the south, a stream runs along the southern portion of the town.
Slade is privy to the same information Dahme'dre has. However, he may be more inclined to travel to the stream since it seems like it could be off the path of any major activity. (Urchin feelings tingle)
Dahme'dre successfully convinces Klobs. He is dead quiet and doesn't seem to mind that she has taken one of his horses. Asked the question, Zomith looks from Klobs to Dahme'dre and back. Klobs finally breaks his silence.
"I would prefer not 'ta be left here alone!"Klobs admits. He sounds frustrated at the whole situation. "But that dragon... it's mighty scary."
"Klobs, old friend," Zomith placed a hand on his shoulder. "It may be a duty for me to protect you, but I cannot sit and wait for this situation to resolve itself."
"Ugh... allow me to accompany ya then,"Klobs shifted uncomfortably in his boots.
"What about your goods?"
"What about 'em!?" Klobs ran his fingers through his hair. "They don't matter as much as me' life."
"Ho ho, so there is a lick of sense to you, yet,"Zomith chuckled and Klobs grinned. They seemed to be sharing a small moment.
Zomith mounts a magebred horse for herself, and brings Klobs up with her.
The magebred horses have stats like a Warhorse, but have 18 CON with a +4 modifier. Keep the rules in the spoiler in mind when using the mounts.
Mounting and Dismounting
Once during your move, you can mount a creature that is within 5 feet of you or dismount. Doing so costs an amount of movement equal to half your speed. For example, if your speed is 30 feet, you must spend 15 feet of movement to mount a horse. Therefore, you can’t mount it if you don’t have 15 feet of movement left or if your speed is 0.
If an effect moves your mount against its will while you’re on it, you must succeed on a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw or fall off the mount, landing prone in a space within 5 feet of it. If you’re knocked prone while mounted, you must make the same saving throw.
If your mount is knocked prone, you can use your reaction to dismount it as it falls and land on your feet. Otherwise, you are dismounted and fall prone in a space within 5 feet it.
Controlling a Mount
While you’re mounted, you have two options. You can either control the mount or allow it to act independently. Intelligent creatures, such as dragons, act independently.
You can control a mount only if it has been trained to accept a rider. Domesticated horses, donkeys, and similar creatures are assumed to have such training. The initiative of a controlled mount changes to match yours when you mount it. It moves as you direct it, and it has only three action options: Dash, Disengage, and Dodge. A controlled mount can move and act even on the turn that you mount it.
An independent mount retains its place in the initiative order. Bearing a rider puts no restrictions on the actions the mount can take, and it moves and acts as it wishes. It might flee from combat, rush to attack and devour a badly injured foe, or otherwise act against your wishes.
In either case, if the mount provokes an opportunity attack while you’re on it, the attacker can target you or the mount.
[Edit: Realized there was room for Klobs to get on a horse. Should make things simple. Zomith will hold the rear or travel near the front. I expect we won't post too much today due to two of us being very limited!]

(OOC: Better bringing work home than staying behind with it. I find I don't get any work done at home until my daughter's have gone to bed.)
With a graceful leap, Slade mounts the last magebred horse and offers a hand to Ashehee, "This way friends. Might I suggest we pause to reassess the situation once there...forewarned is forearmed as they say."
With that Slade gives his mount a nudge and with a jolt charges off towards the city, By the Triumvirate, I hope I don't get us all killed. Fortune may favor the bold, but are we just fools rushing in?
Dahme'dre's quick glance of Klobs' goods show mostly just the crates. Without popping them open, she isn't able to tell much.
Klobs sees Dahme'dre looking at his wares and quickly states, "Trust me fine people... not much ta' see in those crates. Not really... battle material in there." Klobs sounds a bit sheepish as he says it. Those of you with excellent people skills can tell he really does not want you to look into his crates.
Zomith laughs, but says nothing. She is ready to join Slade's vanguard or stay in the rear, she waits for Dahme'dre to command as Zomith respects Dahme'dre's general attitude in such a dire situation.
