As Stone and Rey search the town, they find Fergus's observation to be correct. Absolutely everyone is dead, most hacked to pieces and strewn about like seed in a field. The bodies also seem to have been thoroughly looted as very little is found on them but valueless personal belongings.
After, they pick through the town hall (which doesn't look to have been occupied by a mayor in some time), the two taverns, the general merchant, all of which are empty save for several chests of records, covered in cobwebs, in a back room of the town hall. Their luck changes a little when they reach the stables. On a desk in a small office and storage room, they see a fat coin purse and a linen sack. Beside the linen sack lies a thin-bladed knife, old and worn with use. In the stables proper, a pony is tethered to a small merchant's cart.
Aside from ascending the hill to House Crain, that seems to be the sum total of the town's remaining contents.

Rey picked up the knife, without giving it a second thought, and stuck it in her belt. She grabbed the coin purse, feeling the weight, a smile slowly growing on her face. She slid it within her armor and left the stable. She made her way back to the inn and announced to the others, "This town is bust. Why did I think it was a good idea coming here? It's like some unknown force has it out for me."
Stone assists Orel in loading bodies into the church. Partway through the grim task, he pauses to look again at the bronze star. Saying a brief prayer to The Eight, he continues loading bodies. He eventually falls into pace with Orel, "Your view of gods is both intriguing and curious. We will have to discuss sometime." If there was any attempt at friendship or genuine curiosity, it was not apparent on the elf's face.

The maniacal laughter from the human catches Orel off-guard, but he soon ignores it. He's dealt with zealots before that felt their's was a true god, so he knew there was no talking sense into them. This would be one that he needs to keep an eye on, he was now sure of it.
Once all bodies are in the building, Orel pulls a flask of oil from his pack. He moves from one section to another, setting the fire to the huge amount of wood he'd piled within. He exits and turns to watch for a moment. Soon, the whole building is a furnace of fire. He turns to the others and says, "I'm going to investigate House Crain." He points to the house on the hill for emphasis. "I'm certain what happened here is linked to it. It could be dangerous though, so I would suggest those who fear for their life should flee with Fergus, the blind girl, and the Half-elf."
With the bustle of activity happening at the inn, Rey didn't want to get in the way. Instead, she found a mostly blood free spot outside to sit. She checked the knife she found, and discovered it was just junk, so she chucked it away. Instead, she pulled out the trinket box and fiddled with it.
"If some petty lordling is hiding up there soiling their smallclothes while their little folk are slaughtered..." Marius hisses in a bitter tone.
"I'll come with you. Someone should speak for these people. If it has to be us, it has to be us."

Sorasuna assisted in any way she could with the act of carrying the bodies into the temple. She watched quietly as the bodies went up in fire. She wondered what kind of people they were. They were burning and the smell of it became offensive. She supposed burning flesh was probably not meant to smell good. The others were talking about investigating the Crain place. This whole place felt wicked, but that building, in particular, seemed to emanate evil.
The dragonborn spoke up, "I'll be coming with you," she stayed near the door. She looked away from the fire and out the door. "If you brains think that building is the source of this mess, then I am with you."

Orel walks up to the blind elf, kneels on one knee, and addresses her, "I'm sorry. I never heard your name. It's not safe here and it won't be safe where we're going. I suggest you go with Fergus." He knew she was a thief and was quite adept at using her disadvantage for help. She also freaked out when she learned everyone was dead and that the crone died in some odd explosion. He couldn't babysit her, but he couldn't leave her to die either. Why she had weapons, he wasn't sure. She may have been trained before she lost her sight, but what good was she if she couldn't even see a threat if it were standing in front of her.
Rey quickly stashed the trinket box and considered his words. "You're going to check out the posh house on the hill, huh?" She looked in the general direction of the house. "Eh, might have some sweet loot to steal," she said shrugging. "I'm sure the cutie can protect me. My name's Reycaryn. You can call me Rey." She looked at Orel and smiled.
Stone stood cross-armed waiting to set off nearby, "Do not discount the blind; this one maneuvers wrll enough. There was a grandmaster of my order: Eliandra Thousand-Eyes. She lost her sight to a cobra's venom as a child. Through The Eight, she fought better than most of our masters. It was said she heard movements through opponents' heartbeats." Looking down at Rey, Stone pauses before continuing, "You are a far-cry from Grandmaster Eliandra. Still, every master starts as a pupil."

Her milky eyes were disconcerting. "I won't protect you if you come," he says sternly.
He looks over to the 'pretty' tattooed elf, "She's yours, if you'll have her."
Standing back up, he addresses the rest, "I can't promise your lives in that house. You go in knowing you may die." He then scans the town for the half-elf and Fergus. "Anyone know where those two got off to?"
"Excuse me," Rey said offended. She stood quickly, sticking her angry little face into Orels... as best she could at her short stature. "I'm not yours to give! I'm not anyone's to take!" She started jabbing him in the stomach, emphasizing each word. "I'm not property for people to just toss about! I'm not trash to be thrown away! I don't need you to protect me and I never asked you to! I'll go where I please, and I'd love to see you try to stop me!"
Orel laughed. At least she had spirit. "Ok. I understand you're not property. I meant to protect, Rey. Calm yourself..." As she touched him, she felt her hand immediately grow cold. A deep cold, as if Orel's body radiated this chill. It brought the hairs on her arms standing and raised goosebumps.
"We should go see if we can find Fergus and..." he thinks for a moment, "Elaine." With that, he begins walking down the road checking between the buildings.
Pulling her hand back, she allows Orel to walk away without further fuss. She holds her hand, rubbing it to get some warmth back into it. What are you, she thinks. "Boy, it sure got cold here for a moment," she yells out, following him.
Marius shrugs and watches the blind elf and the pompous half-orc wander down the main street yelling back and forth. It didn't seem cold at all right by the roaster that the shrine had become. He stands up and brushes the crumbs off of his chest and trousers, then wraps the black gauzy cloth back around his nose and face and neck.
He wanders a little closer to Sorasuna and gazes up at the house on the hill. "I hate waiting." Then, after a bit of a pause, "How long have you been away from your home?"

Sorasuna looked at the man speaking to her. She appreciated his impatience. She could feel the anxiety of waiting course through her. She had since learned to stave it off... She had some experience.
She scratched her head in thought, and said, "Hmm... You know. I'm not really certain. Maybe months... Maybe years? Long, but not so long? How about you, stranger," Sorasuna placed her hands on her hips, hoping to look more approachable. "How long have you been away from home?"
She looked to Marius and to the group and back. "Heh, we could go peek around the estate... You know. A little scouting mission?" Her voice was a bit mischievous, as if she was sharing a secret with him. "I, too, hate to wait!" She laughed, acrid smoke escaping from her throat.
